‘Shoot Him Again! Shoot Him!’: Husband Coaches Wife to Shoot Home Invader in Chilling 911 Audio

Police have released audio from a 911 call made during a home invasion in Georgia, in which a concerned husband tells his wife to shoot a lawless intruder. The mom was home alone with her twin 9-year-old children when the man broke into their home with a crowbar.

The mother, later identified as Melinda Herman, shot the man five times with a .38 caliber revolver after he cornered them in an attic crawlspace, successfully protecting herself and her two children, TheBlaze previously reported.

Herman’s husband, Donnie, was in Atlanta and remained on the phone with his wife and a 911 operator on separate line throughout the incident. The audio recording of the call was obtained by WXIA and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

NBC News provides a partial transcript of the call:

“Do you hear him? Is he in the house? He’s in the house,” Donnie Herman says.

“Melinda, if he opens that door, you shoot him, you understand.”

“She has a weapon?” asks the dispatcher. “What type of weapon?”

“She has a .38,” Donnie Herman said.

The 911 operator tells him that officers were on the way.

“She shot him. She’s shooting him, she’s shooting him.”

“OK,” the dispatcher responds.

“Shoot him again! Shoot him!” Donnie Herman yells, later telling the dispatcher “She shot him, a lot.”

Donnie Herman also talks about how he just took his wife to the gun range. “Just remember everything that I showed you,” he tells his wife.

Listen to excerpts of the audio below (first shot fired at around 2:00):

When the gun shots stopped, the terrified father waited seven minutes, which must have felt like an eternity, before he found out his family was OK, WXIA reported.

Melinda Herman later told police that she began shooting when the robber, identified as Paul Slater, opened the attic crawl space. And she didn’t stop shooting until she was out of bullets, despite the man’s pleas.

“This lady decided that she wasn’t going to be a victim, and I think everyone else looks at this and hopes they have the courage to do what she done,” Sheriff Joe Chapman told the Associated Press on Wednesday.

“Slater– who was taken to the hospital with punctured lungs, a punctured liver, and a punctured stomach– has reportedly been arrested six times since 2008,” TheBlaze reported.

Melinda Herman and her children, though shaken, were not injured in the incident.

The perfect argument for the legal possession of weapons, and the perfect scenario to lay at the feet of those lofty creatures (who are protected by the best weapons money can buy) in DC, Liberal Media and Hollyweird. Mr. Beck, I see a huge march on DC, against weapons bans and Constitutional Abuse in the near future. I urge you(and member of the NRA), to use your resources to encourage a million+ citizens to march on the Capitol before these abuses reach a critical mass of no-return.

Well done, Melinda & Donnie! You have taught your children a crucial lesson about survival.

She wasn’t on the line with the police. Her neighbors were. In fact, after she shot the intruder several times at her husband’s prompting (hats off to you, sir, for the way you handled the situation), he had no clue if she was OK or what had happened to his kids. It looks like she was very traumatized. It’s sad what this woman and her children had to go through, while an officer typed, and the police were “on their way.”

Too bad that vermin is not dead, but Melissa should be very proud of herself. She did the right thing by calling her husband instead of the police. He knows the house and he knows her. Donnie is one smart, collected guy. He contacted 911 so it was all on record, and he did what a man is supposed to do, i.e., protect his family.

Once the police have been notified and are on the way, what’s the point of letting the PC government record what’s going on?

If someone breaks into your home with the intent of killing your family, and you successfully defend them, the government will consider everything you say when deciding whether to charge you with murder. Did you use too much force? The loser’s widow or parents, or the politically correct DA might think so when the police publish their tape.

ALL courts inclusive of the supreme court have persistently ruled that “fundamental principle of American law that a government and its agents “POLICE” are under no general duty to provide public services, such as police protection, to any individual citizen.”
The court held that the San Jose police were not liable for ignoring Mrs. Brunell’s pleas for help. Hartzler v. City of San Jose, 46 Cal. App. 3d 6 1st Dist. 1975
      Riss v. New York, 240 N.E.2d 860 N.Y. 1968
      Warren v. District of Columbia, 444 A.2d 1 D.C. Ct. of Ap., 1981
      DeShaney v. Winnebago County Department of Social Services 109 S.Ct. 998, 1989
      Balistreri v. Pacifica Police Department. 901 F.2d 696 9th Cir. 1990
      Moreover, Zinermon v. Burch 110 S.Ct. 975, 984 1990
all the aforementioned cases resulted in the death

Constitutional duties of care and protection only exist as to certain individuals, such as incarcerated prisoners, involuntarily committed mental patients and others restrained against their will and therefore unable to protect themselves.
Neither a public entity or a public employee [may be sued] for failure to provide adequate police protection or service, failure to prevent the commission of crimes and failure to apprehend criminals.
In other words this means the only people the police are duty-bound to protect are criminals in custody, and other persons in custody for such things as mental disorders. YOU have no recourse if the police fail to respond or fail to protect you from injury

If you read carefully all the facts one thing is clear. This was not a burglary. A black man was intent on raping the woman as he ignored things in the house and went straight after her. Through several doors and obstacles, not looking at any property in the home. Not wanting to leave any witnesses he would have killed her and the children after he had his way with them. I believe this civilian woman with a gun stopped far more than is being told here.

In Georgia, a thug (or his family, if you have put him/her six feet under) CAN NOT sue someone if they were shot while committing a crime. It is state law.

This is, in large part, due to georgiacarry.org (the best 2nd amendment rights organization for Georgia citizens).

I recommend that everyone research and join organizations that work tirelessly for our God given rights to self defense with firearms. And if someone lives in Georgia, PLEASE spend $15 and join Georgia Carry.

God only knows what would have happened if she wasn’t armed and only waited for police (esp in Atlanta). If anyone breaks into my home, it won’t be 911 I will be calling, it will be the coroner. More practice at the range to guarantee you take them out with 1-2 shots and save your ammo for the next SOB that comes in your home.

People, whatever you do in such a situation, DO NOT stay on the phone with the 911 operator. They only want you to stay on the line so they can record the event audio and use it later against you in a court of law. There is nothing that they can do for you by you talking to them. They are not your friend. You need both hands and feet to defend yourselves. They want the evidence to ascertain if you did anything “wrong” during the attack. And, God forbid you call your attacker a name or use a racial slur against them. They will rake you through the coals. Look at what they did to Zimmerman, putting words in his mouth that he didn’t even say. Hang up the phone. Do not talk to them.

For once, I’m going to partially agree with Mil-dot.
Give name, location, description of suspect then if possible hang up or at least shut up.

Don’t forget though that most of those audios are used to prosecute the offender not the defender. Usually if used against the defender it’s because they continued to plug away at the suspect after they were defensless and laying on the ground after surrendering and/or dying.

Remember the OKC phamacist as a good example. He offed the unarmed 16yo after chasing the armed attacker outside, came back, retrieved a second weapon then shot the unarmed and dying kid another time. He would not be in prison now had he simply let him die from the first shots.

Ok to everyone who thinks their 40 cal or 45 cal handgun will dispatch enemies with devastating efficiency, please do not think that…that is folly. Handguns, any caliber, are poor performers. It is not like the movies where one or two shots and the threat is stopped. Rifles are exponentially more damaging and you can shoot a deer, double lung, with a 308 and it will still run 50 yards or so. Do you really think a man, weighing more than a deer will be dropped instantly with a handgun? My point is, do not have a false sense of security in your handgun.

Doug, I’m with you on rule 1. But if someone breaks in my house and comes at me or my family there will be no conversation, I will assume he is there to bodily harm us and I will use whatever force I have at my disposal to dispose of him. And there will be no attempt at withdrawal. Once he takes away my right to safety in my own home, he loses his.

“When seconds count , The police are only minutes away.” Well said! This is exactly the crux of the gun debate in a nutshell. The police cannot protect the innocent except in the rarest of instances. The Second Amendment was never meant to allow hunters to have rifles. It was meant to allow law abiding citizens the right to have a weapon at their disposal to use against bad guys–all bad guys, whether their intent is to do bodily harm, take another’s posessions, molest, or enslave them. A tyrant is a tyrant, whether he’s wearing a hoody, a suit and tie, or a uniform. It is so obvious that we cannot have “Life, Liberty, or the Pursuit of Happiness unless we can protect ourselves, our families, and our property.

This is the exact reason that as a police officer I personally want every person without a felony or mental illness that precludes possession of arms to be well armed! My sidearm and other weapons are to protect me. And even if I do have the ability to be in a position to protect you it’s likely going to be too late if he is already in the home.

Own weapons, train with them, keep them loaded, recieve PROFESSIONAL training, teach your family to use them, train on other weapon systems and be familar with their usage, keep them readily available, train with them again and again and again. Have a plan for when it goes wrong, envision possible situations.

Nothing puts a smile on my face like a home owner emptying a revolver into an intruder. The husband needs to get her a 40 or 45. A 38 will do the job but as a general rule you should never bring a pistol to the fight whose caliber does not begin with a “4″

Thank you, Marine. You’re a gentleman.

I agree with you, but I encourage my students to use what they’re comfortable with. I instill in them that IF they have to pull the trigger for self-defense, then they best aim to stop the offense. Three rounds and good shot placement then negates the need for a knock-down round like a .45 – get my drift? Most of my female students can fire a .45, but most are most comfortable, thus more accurate, with a 9mm.

She did the right thing. You fire until the threat is gone. Hell, even officers empty their magazines when they start shooting. You never see any officers going to jail when they shoot someone 40 X or more. Its how they are trained.

Good people are armed with wits and Guns and the Truth.

The common law elements of self-defense are four; be innocent of instigation, use sufficient force only to deliver oneself from evil, be in reasonable fear of bodily harm, attempt to withdraw.

“use sufficient force only to deliver oneself from evil”

Can anyone define sufficient force? Per Hollywood double tapping is sufficient when deailing with zombies but there’s always that severly wounded bad guy that manages to re-arm himself and shoot someone.

Hey. Doug, that was English law and utterly insane. Way back in 1921, SCOTUS ruled that “a defendant does not have a duty to retreat from anywhere he has a legal right to be.” Very few states still hold limited duty to retreat laws, certainly not in your own home. Given we now have a commie in the WH, if your state does not have SYG laws, I strongly recommend you move to a state that does.

Attempt to withdraw doesn’t allways mean from your home. And while Castle Doctrine in TX as well as here in OK says no retreat is needed it generally shows very bad for you if you are chasing the subject down the street as he flees. You have become the aggressor if the person is no longer attempting to harm you or others and no longer has means with which to do so.
