‘Fighting and Throwing Chairs’: Riot Explodes as Thousands Seek Housing Vouchers in Mich.

Applicants for Section 8 housing vouchers in Taylor, Michigan went wild Saturday after authorities asked thousands to return another time, CBS Detroit relates.

Apparently, somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 turned out– some waiting in line all night– but only 1,000 vouchers were available.

CBS Detroit explains:

When it came time for the vouchers to be distributed, police said there was a mad rush for the door, with people jockeying for position to be the first inside the building. Officers tried to control the crowd, but couldn’t. Fearing the situation was more than they could handle, event organizers shut the entire thing down and turned off the lights inside the building. Witnesses say that’s when things really got ugly.

Star Lee, of Romulus, described the scene as complete chaos.

“People just don’t have order to themselves, you know what I mean? People were fighting and throwing chairs, and that’s just not necessary…”

Candice Wacasey, of Taylor, said she was frightened.

“When the lights went out, it went horrible. People started trampling over people, there was a disabled lady that was in a wheelchair, and they was trying to knock her over to get in front of her. I mean, just crazy,” she said. [Emphasis added]

And those who were willing to knock over a disabled woman for a crack at government subsidized housing certainly weren’t going to let a few kids get in the way, according to witnesses.

“There was people who was physically putting their hands on people’s childs (sic) and moving them. It was unbelievable,” Lenny Syer said.

But many were more troubled by the fact that thousands may have to forgo government assistance a bit longer.

“There was elderly, disabled people, pregnant single women. They were here for help, to get their Section 8 vouchers. It just shows you what a desperate need [there is]… some were here since yesterday,” Rhianna Rodriguez told ABC 7.

Authorities say they will examine what went wrong on Saturday to determine how to best reschedule the event.

  I will tell you it is the mindset of the people. They don’t see it as the working ppl paying their way. It is their way of life. Year after year the same stream of ppl come to collect. It is the same ole same ole for them. Like the ppl who don’t have screens on their windows don’t want screens. The poor of spirit will always be with us. No one has taught them the way to pull themselves up by the boot straps and get the job done. Self reliance is an internal drive that needs to be fed. As a society we have allowed this to become out of control, political correctness has ruined things big time. Is this the way really to help or control the ppl by the government? Asking better questions and thinking this situation through is what really needs to be done. Just my opinion on a complex situation.

  The elderly & disabled do need help & should be helped but they are less then 10% of those that show up for entitlements. The rest are welfare pigs too lazy & irresponsible to take care of themselves. Welfare pigs should be sent to labor camps.

  Yes it is. When I was in Phoenix, there was this woman panhandler that was out at the intersection down by my employer every day. She was there when I went by on the way to work at 7 am and still out there harassing drivers at the light when I left to go home at 5 pm. Basically this woman was panhandling for 50 hours a week. How much money would she have made if she had applied that much energy to working?

  @Decendentof56….. It is comforting to realize that more people are beginning to recognizing the bitter truth. We are still in the minority but, I know a few fools who voted for slug in the white house not once but twice and are already regretting it. Pennsylvania, sadly a blue state, boasts the largest population of hunters in the country. Although they do not own firearms for the purpose outlined in the second amendment, they do, nonetheless, own them. It’s been interesting to hear them lament their mistake in the last two weeks since the Sandy Hook incident. They have been stocking up on ammo and a couple of them purchased more firearms. They are fearful that the person they voted for is turning on them and they are correct. It’s both sad and amusing to me. Little did they know he has been turning on the nation as a whole since he laid his thieving hand on the good book and lied to the nation when he promised to “preserve, protect and defend the constitution”. Unfortunately the rain falls on all of us, the wise and the foolish. Stay vigilant and keep looking up.

  Good post, good idea! I’ve been saying this for a while. I think we have FAR more in common than is really understood or communicated. As a reformed leftie, I know that I was simply mistaken about the conservative party and when I finally woke up and saw the truth, it was clear. It wasn’t that I changed as much as I stopped believing the lies told by the left (that they are the party of the common man, the more compassionate party, et cetera, et cetera). I know now that most people believe in helping their fellow man, but that a handout is detrimental. I know that most people know that deep down inside they have what it takes, with the help of God, to make a difference in the world by individual responsibility. Of course, there are many who will do everything to just take, take, take; but I know that most people don’t have it in their character to live like that. We just get caught up in taking sides, rather than recognizing our similarities and starting from there. I applaud this idea enthusiastically.

  Am awake Shamrock…..There aren’t as many of those folk in Obamas camp as you may think. If we go to war, and I hope we dont, then there is a large group that has been disenfranchised from the system, heavily armed, and believes more of what you believe than you may think. They are just surviving any way they can, the same as you will when the system all collasps. Let’s pretend we dont include them in our evil little plans, that’s fine to a degree; however all the folk who aren’t votine are usually the ones tied to a mortgage and living up to an unachievable self imposed standard. What Im simply saying is that we need to get very inclusive, very quick, or we are in for trouble we cant even imagine……Usually Im the first to battle…I believe we need to battle on a different front this time.   Zanesdad; first I believe that there is at least 70% of the population that believes in the Constitution as it was written. Far to often the Government erodes it’s content in the name of “Our Safety.” “Our Safety” actually resides in Our freedom and the responsibility we should be graced with to practice those freedoms. Second, all those people that are assumed to be on the Government Teet often are not, that is why there is so much drug dealing on the streets….I really believe that they would certainly prefer to have a decent job, and not be reserved to looking over their backs the rest of their lives, but we have set up a citizenship and corporate culture where old business centers are no longer of use… I’m simply stating that they should be included rather than further disenfranchised as they are now.   Zerohedge had an article that said the tax increases this year could take 3.5% off the GDP. The economy is bad. There are not a lot of jobs.
  
  Doling out benefits is how Democrat ranchers maintain power & keep people & unions under control.
  
  Most people don’t want to be on welfare if they know they have a roadmap out. If all they can see is a path from welfare to a minimum wage job, they’ll stay on welfare. they need to have a vision & a road map beyond that. They need to know local people who have done that not just anecdotes such as Rich Dad Poor Dad. They need to see it locally.

Many of these people waited in line all night, some for up to 18+ hours. When the doors were opened, hundreds of careless people who had not waited in line shamefully rushed for the doors while pushing aside those who stood in line overnight.

  Just imagine when food, water and housing is not available. Be careful folks, imagine every possible situation and prepare for it. Millions will leave the cities and enter the burbs and what they can’t find there they will press on. Gangs, groups and straglers will come looking for food and water. Your Marxist gay ruler can’t tell you how much he enjoys seeing this,it warms my cold black heart to see all that chaos.My uneducated worthless base showed up for me in November,twice and I let them down in spectacular fashion and I’ll continue to let them down. When they engage in widespread violence because they’re starving and need shelter I’ll order my pawns to kill them but only if they become a threat to my regime. If they’re robbing and killing the normal people I’ll allow them to continue their rampage because you are after all my enemy.

  My father had the same problem with single white mothers, when he rented apartments. He tried to avoid them, which was not always possible. Of course when they left the apartment was damaged & dirty.
  
  The black community has longer been infected with the Democrat virus. When white illegitimate birth (which are rising) come close to match black illegitimate births I do not think you will see much of a difference. There will still be a difference because Democrats have allowed, nay nurtured, victimology among the black community.

  Silversmith I don’t remember responding to this story. I think someone used my identity. I would like to see the “cruddy thing” I was supposed to have said. My opinion would have agreed with most of the comments here. I am prepared with food, water, and ammo. I live in a part of OKC that is mixed racially and there are a lot of section 8 recipiants. Many rental signs say NO SECTION 8. I am older and won’t be able to run. I will stand my ground here.
