Former Secretary of State Colin Powell — who split with the Republican Party to endorse President Barack Obama two times — said Sunday there are some clearly racial elements within the GOP.
“There’s also a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party,” Powell said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “What do I mean by that? What I mean by that is they still sort of look down on minorities.”
While not mentioning former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin or former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu by name, Powell referenced past comments from each about Obama as evidence of racism in the party.
“When I see a former governor say the president is ‘shuckin’ and jivin’,’ that’s a racial-era slave term,” Powell said. Palin used the term to describe Obama’s response to the attacks in Benghazi, Libya.
“When I see another former governor after the president’s first debate where he didn’t do very well say that the president was ‘lazy,’” Powell continued. “He didn’t say he was slow, he was tired, he didn’t do so well, he said he was lazy. Now it may not mean anything to most Americans, but to those of us who are African Americans, the second word is “shiftless,” and then there’s a third word that goes along with it.”
Powell also decried the so-called birther movement, asking, “Why do senior Republican leaders tolerate this kind of discussion within the party?”
“I think the party has to take a look at itself,” Powell said, naming health care, immigration, the poor and climate change. “There are a lot of things the American people are expecting, and the Republican Party as they get ready for the next election really has to focus on some of these issues and not ignore them.”
He added, “If it’s just going to represent the far right-wing of the political spectrum, I think the party’s in difficulty. I’m a moderate, but still a Republican.”

Jan. 13, 2013 at 4:50pmIf he thinks there is a dark vein of intolerance in the Republican party he must be terrified by the Democrat party. Progressives are the most intolerant group that I’ve ever seen. They want everything their way and they want to regulate everyone to force them to believe the same. They won’t allow people to practice their religion in public and they won’t allow certain speech and they want to determine what guns I have and what car I drive and what food I eat, etc, etc. Libertarians are the most tolerant.

Jan. 13, 2013 at 5:09pmThe true hypocracy is greatest when “the whit man, Obama” raised by whites in white and hawaiian private schools, suddenly adapts a shuck and jive which is foreign to his experience. Then, there is the first black first lady, Hillary (remember, they gave Clinton the title as First black Pres. and Obama was bestowed the honor of first “Gay pres”) None of that is republican. Plus, if a black or other minority chooses to be a conservative or a republican they get “Uncle Tommed” or called a race-traitor. I don’t know about the upper echalone republicans where Colin shares meals with and rubs elbows; they might look down on him personally. Which he takes as a race issue, when it’s really more like: “what the h’ll you doing t our party, all your beliefs, proposed policies, comments, and endorsements represent the democrats and Pres O.”…

Jan. 13, 2013 at 5:31pmI don’t know if these comments are from real Blaze readers or trolls. But for the record, MIL_DOT, no race of people holds the patent on bad behavior or sloth. If half of American households are receiving government assistance and Blacks are only 12% of the population (and shrinking), math says that most of the lazy and shiftless are non-black. It’s SOP for people who only see color to overlook the misdeeds of people who look like them, but fall over themselves to point out the missteps of the people who don’t. And while this country disintegrates socially, morally, and economically, it’ll be the ‘white is right’ folks who will form Nazi-type political parties to hasten the nation’s demise because to them color is more important than the Republican party or the country. The examples Powell cites are just stupid and aren’t evidence of racism unless you’re channeling Chris Matthews. Next time he can just refer to the comments posted here instead.

Jan. 13, 2013 at 6:13pmWithout a doubt, yes, there are some racial elements inside the GOP. But there are just as many if not more racial elements inside the Democratic Party. I mean come on, wasn’t it the Democrats that opposed the Civil Rights movement? How many times have Planned Parenthood clinics been exposed for specifically targeting black babies for abortion? And then what about black-against-white racism? Blacks vote 95% Democrat. Statistically this makes no sense. Whites don’t all vote the same everywhere, so why do Blacks? It would seem they are voting along racial lines. Nothing else makes sense to explain this trend. Given everything that’s going on I think it’s a bit irresponsible for someone like Powell to stoke the racial flames. It feels like race relations have gone backwards the past 4 years.

Furthermore, he never had any intent WHATSOEVER to fulfill his oath of office, and is, in fact, subversive. Thanks to a spineless Congress, he is allowed to get away with it. Was it racism, when 97% of black folks voted for the one black candidate?
Would we have called it racism, if 97% white people would have voted for the white candidate?
Is it racist that makes blacks (12.5%) of the population to do 1/2 of the nation’s murders?
Was it racism when Trayvon Martin got made a hero, after attacking a white hispanic, with THC in is system, and not long after being found with burglary tools, and jewelry not his own?
Was it racism when Autumn Pasqualie (I12 year old white girl) went missing, and when the MSM discovered that she was beat to death by two black teens, they dropped the whole story and never mentioned it again?
Was it racism, when Obama declared a white cop to have acted stupidly, because he arrested a belligerent buddy of Obama’s

Jan. 13, 2013 at 8:04pmOh come on folks, when he said that, “There’s also a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party,” he was just stating the obvious. Something the posts here prove.
Latinos helped Bush win his second term (despite losing the popular vote) but sadly for the Republican party they have not only not followed his outreach to Mexicans, and they actually ran instead on the “southern strategy” of appealing to intolerance.
Republican policies in 2012 were explicitly anti-minority, anti-women and anti-gay. Please don’t deny that. That was the platform they ran on! And guess what, those groups voted against Romney and other candidates and they lost. Were it not for the 2010 gerrymandering of Republican districts they’d have lost the house too.
You guys probably want to double down on those policies but the smart Republicans, like Rubio and Christie realize that strategy and those policies are a thing of the past. The far right intolerant group is shrinking and those who oppose them – women, minorities and the young – are increasing.
Republicans have shifted so far to the right and so far toward intolerance, the party wouldn’t be recognized by Republicans even 20 years ago. So the party will start moving back to the middle, where they used to be. Sorry guys, but without that your party is history.

Your comment “Republicans have shifted so far to the right and so far toward intolerance, the party wouldn’t be recognized by Republicans even 20 years ago.”
really?
20 years ago, neither party declared their run for the Senate race from the house of a known terrorist. Like Obama did with Bill Ayers
20 years ago, neither party had members that were schooled at the feet of card carrying communsit members. Like Obama and Frank Marshall
20 years ago, neither party argued that you could force a man to buy gov health insurance, and then punish him if he did not
20 years ago, neither party forced degenerate sodomites on our military, knowing they are only 2.5% of the population, but have 64% of the nation’s syphilis, made up 57% of new HIV cases, and do 1/3 of the nations child molestations
20 years ago, our politicians did not support the Muslim Brotherhood, and their jihadist ways
20 years ago, none of our politicians went around the world on an apology tour
20 years ago, we did not have a president, whose father was a Kenyan and had wrote that it is ok to tax a man 100% of his income
20 years ago, Collin Powell actually had a spine, and declared that homosexuality was not conducive to good morale and discipline in our military.
When a politician evolves, it means that they turned to a jelly fish, and lost their spine.

I hate to be the one to tell you this Skip, but politicians on the right are going to sound less and less like you while they move toward the center and stop demonizing minorities. Unfortunately, there is a good bit of truth to your statement. While I do not have a party, being an independent, the entire country is moving away from the center, and now toward the hard left. Republicans are now left of center, and moving away from it.

I would have to say that Ranger would have voted for Powell in 2000 if he had been the Republican nominee. Now he wouldn’t due to the betrayal & the fact that he runs when pressed. All that military service & you would think Powell would have more nerve.
Before there was a question about obama’s birth certificate there was a question about McCain’s. That is the crux of the matter. The 2nd matter would be that in mutlitracial Hawaii that obama’s parents could not get married?

Jan. 14, 2013 at 9:20amIt proves one thing that inspite of all the praise of American people even a black man that rises to the highiest office in the military STILL VIEWS HIMSELF AS AFRICAN RATHER THAN AMERICAN.
Powell proves that blacks view the entire world by color. I would have simply asked him to name one piece of racial legislation ever passed by a Republican majority in U.S. HISTORY.
Then watch him skirm in the chair.
Fact is the Republican parties originally wanted to be called the abolishist party as ending the unChristian practice of slavery was their top priority. They only changed the name to get more support from people who had no oppinion about slavery.

Jan. 14, 2013 at 9:24amYou will notice that Meteors really gets his **** in a bind anytime I bring up 12.5%
Post after post, thread after tread, I remind people the fact that blacks in America make up 12.5% of the population, and do 1/2 of all murders. IF we lower black murder rates to the same as whites, then we lower the national murder per capita rate by almost 40%, and save lots of black lives.
This infuriates Meteors. He hates to be reminded of facts, and never can he speak on this fact.
he knows that murder rates are also intrinsically tied to liberal welfare programs.
Libs would rather have Joey Biden run a counsel on gun control. They are fine with Biden talking about stripping away one of our rights.
They would not dare have Biden run a counsel on lowering murder rates. That would mean putting facts on the table, and libs do not like facts, nor are libs concerned with less blacks getting murdered. It does not fit their agenda.
To the dismay of Meteors, I will continue to mention the 12.5%, and I will do it often. No one in the MSM speak these facts, so when I do it, visitors to the blaze get a dose or factual reality gained just about nowhere else. Libs hate for citizens to be armed with facts.

Jan. 14, 2013 at 12:14pmUMMM! Powell’s case makes no sense and cannot hold water. He states the GOP Party has gone too far to the right and cites twe last two Presidential Republican Campaign loses as evidence. What has the General been smoking? or is it TOO MUCH OBAMA KOOL-AIDE.?
Let’s examine the past two GOP candidates. First is John McCain, a LIBERAL Republican, his Senate votes attest to this.. Second is Mitt Romney, also a Liberal, his MA Gov record upholds his Liberal thinking; although he claims to be a moderate. Not moderate enough as 3 million Republicans stayed home because he was not sufficiently conservative. Powell claims to be a moderate Repubblican, but supported a RADICAL LIBERAL, not once but twice. Message to POWELL: gift yourself and get out of the national limelight!

Jan. 14, 2013 at 12:59pmThey hypocrisy is sickening. More and more babble and whining, as someone above said. Will people please grow up. The only place I see racism is in the media. It’s not on the sidelines of my children’s sports activities, it’s not in their classrooms, it’s not in our homes. I look around Wal Mart or Target and notice people of all colors and shades laughing and joking around, or engaged in conversation. My children’s friends, who are of many different persuasions, laugh at each others’ stereotypical attributes. One of my children’s friends jokes around about being Mexican. He laughs at himself because he is mature enough to see that he is not a victim. The kids can do this because they are mature, intelligent individuals, unlike the people running the country, or the people writing about it. This circus they have in Washington does not represent America.

Jan. 14, 2013 at 4:27pmHAPP77….SENDTHEMETEORS used to post as JZS.
He’s the same cretin that insisted that George W Bush gave loans to Solyndra, and when I asked him to present the loan details to me he instead presented an interview with Obama’s propaganda minister David Plouffe, saying that George Bush started the loan guarantee programme. He wants to foment the idea that because George W Bush started the programme, the therefore approved and fasttracked the Solyndra loan guarantees. In fact Obama’s white house -through the inept Stephen Chu- fasttracked the loan guarantees to Solyndra in 2009 and not only approved them, but subordinated the loans so that the tax payer was left holding the bag while Obama’s campaign donor kept his $70 million in Solyndra.
SENDTHEMETEORS was also singing the praises of Occupy Wall Street. We all saw how that debacle went down.
JZS/SENDTHEMETEORS is an idiot. He says what his handlers tell him to say. The cretin hasn’t had an original thought in decades.
His MO is to usually come to the boards late at night and post lies and distortions as truth at the top of the thread , an hour when no one is likely to respond quickly. The dullard will watch the board throughout the day and if he believes he’s got “an in” he’ll attempt to exploit it. If he sees himself getting slammed, he just moves to another board as if it never happened. The passive-aggressive routine is part of his MO, it’s the way he believes he can squirm out of a situation

Jan. 14, 2013 at 8:51pmA reply to Skippy or AvengerKKK or whatever you are calling yourself today. I see you are a two trick pony!
I take it this JZ person explained the facts about Solyndra and Bush to you. Now, I’m not a psychologist or anything, but it sounds like JZ cleaned your clock on the the issue and that may explain your compulsion to come back to the issue over and over. As I understand it little is known about what might cause a person with obsessive-compulsive disorder to focus their repetitive behavior in one particular topic or another. But clearly, these topics have tapped into and aggravated the OCD behavior.
Skippy/KKK I urge you to seek help. Your fantasies about me are diagnostic even without the other manifestations of OCD or OCPD. I see I also trigger your symptoms, when a single post of mine provokes three, four or five posts, most including the “blacks commit almost all the crimes” and “Solyndra” meme cut and paste repetitive behavior.
Thank you Keatonc33 for summarizing the views here. I recommend that Skippy/KKK read those. And GhostOfJefferson, who says, in a lapse to paranoid delusion says that, “Powell is a plant.”
First of all Ghost, he is a human, not a plant. Second, he’s a moderate Republican and someone who has done more for this country than you ever will. But sure, say he’s a nobody if it make you feel good. Whatever floats your boat.

And I know that is heresy to a liberal, because they give black people a pass no matter HOW racist their views. They think it’s perfectly acceptable, apparently, for a Black Panther to stand up and rant publicly that “we need to kill ourselves some crackers. We need to kill they ******* babies.” Nary an outcry about that–nothing but crickets from the liberal side. But what if a Conservative had stood up and publicly called for white people to kill black babies? You’d have heard their screams of outrage from here to Timbuktu! Jan. 14, 2013 at 11:19amA racist is one who engages in racing as a profession be it racing sprints, long distance, bicycles, motor vehicles, to distance celestral bodies or weapons; just like an artist engages in the production of art.
Republicans are concerned about economics, strong defense, The Constitution, and liberty for all. We are a party of tradition, hard work, and liberty. We don’t segregate our policies based on minority preferences over majority.
We don’t shame a person because they are born a white male, and require them to bendover for ever supposed whine of a minority. And that is where the problem is….the constant incessant whining of minorities. “It’s not fair”…..jealousy from imaginary slights or contorted, twisted facts to be judged as “racist” which are actually attempts to enforce laws such as robbery, drug dealing, human trafficing, illegal immigration, and murder! It isn’t racism. It is areas where crime is being produced and the criminals happen to be a Minority.
Then, there’s the “Gays” or LGBT, we have no discrimination in that we don’t acknowledge special consideration or equality for sexual tastes and appetitites, just like people would only consume fish and not touch a shell type bottom feeder which have more health risks.

So many have been brainwashed to hate their own race and worship the black man that it is getting to be ridiculous. Don’t ever trust a black man. He will knife you in the back figuratively and side with his brethren at the drop of a hat. I have seen it occur dozens of times. They hate your white guts and think that you owe them for slavery that happened 150 years ago, and not a single one of them or even their great grandfathers and mothers did not experience it. You have to earn respect in this world. When respect is codified in law by govts, it is meaningless and of no value whatsoever. It actually creates a backlash. Suck up to the black man at your own peril. I will not do so.

“Suck up to the black man at your own peril. I will not do so.”
Nor will I, Mildot.
I tell it like it is, and if the do-gooders and programmed robots don’t like it that’s too bad.
Some people on this site operate under the delusion that criticization of black crime and other pathologies is racist, because they’ve been brainwashed to think that way. But many here are free-thinkers.
The activists get on here also always with denunciations as psycological ploys to make a few feel as if they’re protestations are evil and wrong, because they can’t legitimately rebut what they say.
To these activists types, let me reveal to them that other sites are MUCH MORE critical of black crime and misconduct than the people here and are becoming the norm.
Here’s what people in Pittsburgh via CBS think of a mob fight:

No, you’ve got that wrong. It’s people like you who have brought us to this deplorable situation. You’re some do-gooder hack that can’t honestly, cogently rebut anything that man said, because every word is true.
All you can do is issue insults.
” I’ll say a pray for you and you bigotry!”
Why don’t you save that prayer for yourself, because it sounds like you’re in denial about what the real world is all about, and perhaps your eyes will not be blinded by feelings of moral superiority by embracing beliefs that that aren’t part of the real world.
I’m sick and tired of you uneducated self-appointed moralists who have made our situation worse by criticizing anyone who finally speaks the truth.

Over 10 years ago the media was pushing him to run for prez. I was talking to people who were actually falling for it. I don’t hear anybody praising him since he endorsed BHO. They are both Big Gov. employees.
They use the Cloak of Racism to shield themselves from critism. Since he was attacking BHO’s critics, this means he was on TV to promote BHO. Hoping for that job he didn’t get the last time.

Jan. 13, 2013 at 4:46pmI recently had to take a trip to Phoenix to work on an IT project. When I had to fly back home I accidentally and stupidly took the wrong bus from the rental car center back to the airport. I was thousands of yards away from where I was supposed to be. A very sweet Hispanic female who was driving the bus told me there was no way in hell that I would be able to walk to my proper destination. She called her supervisor and asked if she could take this giant bus and drop my dumb white ass off where I was supposed to be. She was very generous and she saved my white ass. I will never forget how kind and sweet she was. I tipped her and thanked her kindly. The Hispanics are ten times the human beings as the black man. Ten times at least.

Jan. 14, 2013 at 10:00pmSweetie, aren’t you a it confused? It was the Republican Party that freed the slaves. It was also the Republicans who helped run the Underground Railroad. Everyone of the early black Congressmen were Republicans. The Ku Klux Klan was founded by the Democrats and they hung white Republicans right alongside the black Republicans so you can see the Democrats have always been the ones who are racist. Republicans not only lived by, they died by, black people.
When black people started to become Democrats it was only when the Dems started buying their votes. It’s hard to by-pass worldly things when you’re on the low end of the economic spectrum.
So,sweet thing, don’t fash yourself about such things as long as you remember it has always been Republicans who always treat black people the same way they treat each other, they don’t treat them as though they’re stupid, the way the Democrats do.

Jan. 13, 2013 at 1:54pmNo, Mr. Powell, you are not a Republican; you are a Democrat. Your parsing of words is one-sided and comes straight from the “Victims’ Handbook.” Obama, himself, has admitted he is lazy; as such, to label him with that word is to endorse his own view of himself. Please stop with the charade of calling yourself a Republican; you’re now in favor of redistribution of wealth from those who have achieved and giving to those who refuse to lift a finger to improve their lot in life regardless of the fact there are many avenues, paid for by those of us who DO pay taxes. I would suggest you read Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s treatise from 1965 that showed what was being done to those families being made to rely on welfare and the welfare state for their sustenance. The Democratic Party, and those who list themselves as part of it, including the current occupant of the White House are committed to a path that will only continue the enslavement of not just black Americans, but ALL Americans. As one who served with you in the military, it pains me to see the depths to which you attempt to twist honest political disagreements into another chorus from The Victims’ Hymnal…”Oh, Woe is Me.”

Jan. 14, 2013 at 2:15amActually, it’s been several years ago now, but I remember a story of some woman who was born, raised and lived in in South Africa for quite a number of years before emigrating to America and becoming a citizen. She was of Dutch extraction. It seems that when she was in some one of our government office’s or the other, filling out their required forms, she checked the box for “African American” and was told she wasn’t an African American, so she couldn’t do that. Yes, even after she showed them where she was born, raised and came from, she was essentially told that she wasn’t the “Right Kind” of “African American”. There are two kinds of “Truth”; there’s “The Truth” and then there’s what my liberal [sorry, my "Progressive"] friends refer to as, “That’s ‘Your’ Truth’ “.

Aren’t you a card carrying Democrat yet? And I am sure there are NO minorities that “look down” on white people right? I am absolutely sure there are NO minorities in the Democratic Party that look down on white people, hate them, and vilify them night and day. I am also very sure that there are no powerful white Masters in the Democratic party (Pelosi, Biden) who INCITE minorities to hate, vilify and look down on white people in the GOP yet give every white person who is a Democrat the label of being “compassionate.” This is drivel to the nth degree. Your gullibility and naivete are truly amazing.
Every one of the above have indicated loyalty to their race above party politics at one time or another, revealing what they really hold most important, including Allen West who said Zimmrman should have been locked up right after the incident with Martin occurred. He wouldn’t have said that if Martin were white.

Jan. 13, 2013 at 2:26pmThe term “African American” was invented in 1987. Wasn’t sure what “Shuckin’ and jivin” meant so I looked it up.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuckin%27_and_jivin%27
“Shuckin’ and jivin’ (or shucking and jiving) is a slang term for the behavior of joking and acting evasively. More generally, the term can also refer to the speech and behavioral mechanisms adopted in the presence of an authoritative figure.[1] Shuckin’ and jivin’ usually involves clever lies and impromptu storytelling, used to one-up an opponent or avoid punishment. The term is also used in the Southern United States referring to deceit or mischief involving lies.”
“According to linguist Barbara Ann Kipfer, the origins of the phrase may be traced to when “black slaves sang and shouted gleefully during corn-shucking season, and this behavior, along with lying and teasing, became a part of the protective and evasive behavior normally adopted toward white people”.[2]
According to the 1994 book by Clarence Major, ‘Juba to Jive, a Dictionary of African-American Slang,’ ‘shuck and jive’ dates back to the 1870s and was an ‘originally southern ‘*****’ expression for clowning, lying, pretense.”[3]
