Colin Powell: Theres a Dark Vein of Intolerance in the Republican Party

NBC

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell — who split with the Republican Party to endorse President Barack Obama two times — said Sunday there are some clearly racial elements within the GOP.

“There’s also a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party,” Powell said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “What do I mean by that? What I mean by that is they still sort of look down on minorities.”

While not mentioning former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin or former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu by name, Powell referenced past comments from each about Obama as evidence of racism in the party.

“When I see a former governor say the president is ‘shuckin’ and jivin’,’ that’s a racial-era slave term,” Powell said. Palin used the term to describe Obama’s response to the attacks in Benghazi, Libya.

“When I see another former governor after the president’s first debate where he didn’t do very well say that the president was ‘lazy,’” Powell continued. “He didn’t say he was slow, he was tired, he didn’t do so well, he said he was lazy. Now it may not mean anything to most Americans, but to those of us who are African Americans, the second word is “shiftless,” and then there’s a third word that goes along with it.”

Powell also decried the so-called birther movement, asking, “Why do senior Republican leaders tolerate this kind of discussion within the party?”

“I think the party has to take a look at itself,” Powell said, naming health care, immigration, the poor and climate change. “There are a lot of things the American people are expecting, and the Republican Party as they get ready for the next election really has to focus on some of these issues and not ignore them.”

He added, “If it’s just going to represent the far right-wing of the political spectrum, I think the party’s in difficulty. I’m a moderate, but still a Republican.”

Oh, Shut Up, Colin Powell. By your own mouth YOU continue to demean YOURSELF.
You are riding high, right down, on the coattail of the Party in Power with a Bro at the helm and YOU
feel you are in High Cotten. Suddently, you forgot the demeanor, deportment, integrity and
character people once believe you had. Oops…..going, going, GONE!
Stick safely in the background and protections of the Politically Correct Bunch.
The REAL WORLD is too REAL for Liberals. Carry on in Delusions of Grandeur with Obama.

LOL…anyone that thinks Powell is a Republican has to have their heads examined.
He’s a politician. If the political winds ever blow back to the conservative side, he’ll “become”
    a conservative.

If I call someone “lazy”, it is because that is what I think of them. If they want to add two or three words to it in order to make it a racist statement, then that is what they think of themselves. Not my fault, not my concern if they are racist. It is off subject.

The Civil Rights Act was signed by LBJ, and they’ve been hollaring racism ever since. Just like a kid hollars Mom! everytime they get into trouble or need ‘protection’. They want the gov. to give them something. In this case, Powell wants a job on the cabinet.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed by a Democrat majority congress that did not get sufficient votes to pass the bill.

Signed by a President, representing the Democrat political party, who during his decades in the congress never voted for Civil Rights legislation prior to 1964.

Colin seems to have forgotten the White House speaker Jay Carney said It and they don’t call racism on that.

Collin Powowell is far from being the Republican go to….ah, wait a minute; this just in. The established Republicans are actually saying that the T=Party is the problem for the countries ails. Don’t believe it? How many good Conservative Candidates were left in the middle of the financial lake 2012 with no help from RNC? Then, we are called extremists within our own, and Colin Powowell is one of them.

I am sooo tired of you hate me because…Whenever anyone disagrees with or says something against the President they are automatically called racist. They only racism I see is from the left at/on anyone that disagrees with them. The left, and this administration, are the only one pushing that agenda. They use it in order to intimidate anyone that disagrees with them in the hopes that we will refrain from questioning the administration on so many fronts because we don’t want to be judged as racist.Call me whatever you want, stick and stones…

Well, let’s not expect more from a person educated in a public school system then into college with the racial preference program. Colon (a dark place) Powell is the intolerant, bigoted one here. Like the rest of the Dem’s, everything is a racial slur to them. It is nearly impossible to have an intelligent conversation with them, because they are always looking for you to say something derogatory, AND they’ll find it if they have to make it up; now the word lazy is “racial speak”, and we can’t say shukin and jivin I guess because those are words only blacks can use. I think Powells use of “the far right wing” is discriminatory, since we know it does not apply to blacks, and he ought to apologize for it.

He’s probably hoping for Secretary of Defense, since it seems the one Obama picked is another loser who is not fit for the position for which he’s being nominated. (See Susan “It was about a video” Rice, liar extraordinaire, and darling of the liberal Sunday morning talk shows, whom Obama ran out as a sacrificial goat so he could slip in somebody even WORSE to nominate as Secretary of State. That’s what he does–he names somebody TOTALLY unsuitable and unacceptable to just about everybody, so the one he REALLY wants–who is typically MORE radical and thus MORE dangerous and unacceptable–will seem “not so bad”.

Are there intolerant people in the right, hell yes there are. Are there intolerant people in the left hell yes there are. There will always be intolerant people no matter what you want to call yourself, conservative or progressive.

The right looks down on those that are welfare queens, generations of families that have existed off the government teat and know no other way of life. The right looks down on homosexuality, drug abuse, alcohol abuse and abortion, because we are (for the most part) moral, God fearing people. We do not want to see millions of unborn children killed, nor the institution of marriage changed or the possibility of all and any sexual perversions being forced down our throats and demanded that we agree with them.

Are there problems in the conservative party? Emphatically YES! We are human and there are those that make mistakes and take things to the extreme.

However on the left, God is government, life is relative and the push to silence those that do not agree with the progressive movement is tremendous. There is no give on issues there is only take, Obama is a prime example of this. There is a hatred of those that are successful because somehow they have too much and that is not fair to those that don’t want to strive or work to earn their way in life. There is a clear line on race on the left that says we can no longer judge a person on their character, only by their skin color.

This is just a small window of differences between

This is so sad… to see the once great General degenerate into a typical progressive mouthpiece. Did the General forget his history… It was the DEMOCRATS that kept the black down in the south. It was the Republicans who started the NAACP in 1905. Its was the REPUBLICANS that tried to get the Civil Rights legislation through a DEMOCRATIC Congress during Eisenhower. Are you that dumb General? I dont think so… so now Im thinking mental illness. Maybe he shouldnt own a gun either…

God! I one day dream of being free of these imbiciles. Can you imagine a place where you’re free to disagree without being labeled a racist or a homophobe?…a place where the media actually plays impartial referee instead of biased propagandist?…a place where you’re free to realize the fruits of your talent and hard work…without being punished?
Being trapped with liberals all around me, makes me feel like I’m trapped in the back seat of a car, being driven down the highway by a drunken adolescent. I dream of getting away from these people…living as a free man once again.

    Dear Secretary Powell,

The only intolerance I’m aware of is that certain people will not ‘SHUT UP’ about race. The racism of the ‘Jim Crow’ days till the height of the Civil Rights movement is not a cultural norm. There is indeed racism today, in this culture. EVERY TIME the government asks a human being what their ‘race’ is, that is part of the institutional racism. EVERY TIME someone votes just because of skin color, that is racism. We, the United States, fought a war to end institutional racism. We The People have spoken and condemned racism within our culture. WHY then do we have ‘people’ whose only reason for existence is to further the evils of racism and division of this Nation? Mr. Powell, are you in that camp? The camp of race baiting parasites: A. Sharpton, J. Jackson, L. Farrakhan, J. Wright, the KKK and the Aryan Nation. I despise racism, and I despise those who feed on and enable it. DO YOU, Mr. Powell?

“Dark vein of intolerance”? That quote alone sounds pretty racist. Maybe Colin and his friends are the real racists in the Republican party.

Of course, he loves to accuse the fiscal conservative/Tea Party wing of his party of being racist. Colin, how many of your fellow moderate Republicans are of ethnic minorities? I can’t think of any other than Powell and Rice. How many from the fiscal conservative wing of the GOP are of ethnic minorities? I can name at least a dozen well known ones in the House and Senate – Puerto Rican Rep. Raul Labrador, Mexican Rep. Jason Chaffetz, Cuban Sen. Marco Rubio, Cuban Sen. Ted Cruz, African-American Sen. Tim Scott, Arab American Justin Amash… With regards to Governors we have Mexican Susana Martinez, Indian Bobby Jindal and Indian Nikki Haley. And there’s a lot of other minority Tea Partiers outside politics – African-Americans like Allen West, Mia Love and CL Bryant to name just a few.

The Tea Party are returning the Republican Party to it’s original values and belief in equal rights, championed by Calvin Coolidge, Robert Taft, Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. Many Republican moderates were originally racist Democrats who switched party in the 70s. We Tea Partiers are here to take back the Republican Party and return it to it’s former glory and it’s clear that we have supporters among all races.
