House Identified on NY Paper’s ‘Gun Map’ Burglarized — And the Robbers Went Straight for the Guns

Man Revealed by Journal News Gun Map Has House Robbed, Criminals Target Gun Safe

(Photo: Lohud.com)

After the Journal News published interactive maps detailing where gun owners live in a number of New York counties in late December, people all across the nation decried the move as an invasion of privacy and a danger to the families.

A number of ex-burglars told Fox News that the list would prove invaluable to criminals, telling them which houses to avoid or rob, depending on what they wanted.

It was revealed on Sunday that one of the homes identified by the paper was targeted by burglars over the weekend, though a connection to the Journal News has not been proven.

New York’s Westchester/Rockland Newsday has noteworthy details on the break-in (all subsequent emphasis added):

A White Plains residence pinpointed on a controversial handgun permit database was burglarized Saturday, and the burglars’ target was the homeowner’s gun safe.

At least two burglars broke into a home on Davis Avenue at 9:30 p.m. Saturday but were unsuccessful in an attempt to open the safe, which contained legally owned weapons, according to a law enforcement source. One suspect was taken into custody, the source said.

The gun owner was not home when the burglary occurred, the source said. The victim, who is in his 70s, told Newsday on Sunday that he did not want to comment while the police investigation continues.

[...]

Neighbor John Mascia said he thought the gun permit database should not have been published.

I could [not] care less what they have in their home,” Mascia said.

Police are investigating what role, if any, the database played in the burglars’ decision to target the home, the law enforcement source said.

Republican State Senator Greg Ball of New York released a strongly-worded statement on the matter Sunday, adding that he plans to introduce legislation to better protect the identities of gun owners in the future:

“The Journal News has placed the lives of these folks at risk by creating a virtual shopping list for criminals and nut jobs. If the connection is proven, this is further proof that these maps are not only an invasion of privacy but that they present a clear and present danger to law-abiding, private citizens. Former convicts have already testified to the usefulness of the asinine Journal News ‘gun maps’ yet the reckless editors are evidently willing to roll the dice, gambling with the lives of innocent local homeowners,†Senator Greg Ball said.

[...]

“The same elitist eggheads who use their editorial page to coddle terrorists and criminals are now treating law abiding citizens like level three sexual predators. These bills are critical to keep folks safe and fundamentally protect their inherent right to privacy… This is not about the Second Amendment; these bills are simply about commonsense and personal privacy. Publishing this information on a website, as we have evidently just witnessed in the recent attempted gun burglary, provides criminals with a map of where they can steal firearms from lawful owners for later use in the commission of crimes. This legislation is critical,†said Senator Greg Ball.

Ball wasn’t the only one to call out the Journal News in the wake of the robbery.  Senator Ball’s office adds:

In addition to Senator Ball’s legislation, the Vice President of the Affiliated Police Association of Westchester County, Robert Buckley, said in a letter [that] publishing these maps online is jeopardizing the safety of residents and is irresponsible.

“The Affiliated Police Association of Westchester County Inc. is putting The Journal News on notice that we will hold [them] accountable for any incident where any of our over 25,000 members are involved with an incident where a criminal or ex-con presents themselves at the residence of one of our members as a result of their name being made public by [their] newspaper,†said Buckley.

Fox News’ Judge Jeanine Pirro ripped into the Journal News over the weekend, noting that the “cowards” who publish the paper appear to be fiercely protective of their own privacy:

Seems to me the Editor of the paper should be libel for placing these people, and their belongings in danger. It was reckless behavior to print these citizens names, and addresses without any consideration of the potential consequences. If one of these burglaries ends up in injury or death, the Editor should be tried for being an accomplice in the criminal behavior.

Point one…Make the lives of the employees/owners of the Journal News miserable by NEVER buying another copy of their despicable paper, and NEVER stop contacting the advertisers of that paper to voice your opposition. Do not do business with them them as long as they advertise in the Journal if at all possible.

Point two…. we just saw WHY people dislike lawyers. Jeff Gold sat there and defended the Journals’ right to publish those names and addresses under the first amendment. I have to wonder, Jeffery, if you would defend someone who made a disparaging racial remark (not even a threat) for their 1st amendment right to make that same comment?

Here is an excellent opportunity to show togetherness as patriotic Americans by standing up for what is right.

Time for a CLASS-ACTION LAW SUIT against the newspaper. Public Record means that anyone (who knows the name or the address) can go and look and see if they have a gun at that address; but it’s not for a single source/entity to do the research and then publish it. WHAT PART OF THAT CAN’T PEOPLE GET?
The gun owners complying with the law have BROKEN no law, therefore are NOT “NEWSWORTHY”.

I hope there is some great law firm up there who can gather up the people listed and sue the hell out of this paper, putting it out of business for once and for all. The paper miss used their ‘power’.

Good Idea, maybe the government should put a 3 day waiting period and background check on buying burglary tools. Then maybe they could make any tool Under, say the size of a crane and wrecking ball that can be used to break into a property illegal to sell in the US lest they fall into the hands of a criminal. We’ve got to get guns off the streets and we all know the vast majority of criminals got there guns from an illegal source such as burglaries or the US Government if we’re talking Mexican Drug Gangs. (But we all know they’re not in the US because it’s illegal for them to come across the border, right?)

Once upon a time if you caused offense to a man, his family or his honor — he’d hunt

One of the reasons crime is so rampant is because criminals laugh at the “consequences”.

This is more from criminalizing EVERYTHING and throwing people in prison rather than actually deal with the problem, drugs/DWI/etc. Stricter punishment (more prison time) is NOT what we need right now, considering the taxpayer is going broke already, 30k a year per prisoner, 90% of whom are imprisoned for non violent crimes.

SENDTHEMETEORS, Can’t quite bring yourself to speak of the whole amendment? Considering how much the government has done to squash the part about “or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” when it comes to that religious part.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Walk your happy ass into the next crowded theater you see and practice your first amendment rights by shouting “FIRE” at the top of your voice. You see, with all of these freedoms, comes responsibility. What this paper did was ANYTHING but responsible. METEORS, are you really that stupid? I mean like dumb as sand stupid? You look for a twisted way to defend the pathetic actions of the newspaper, instead of defending law abiding citizens. Freedom of speech has limits, you cant yell fire in a crowded theater. What if one of your friends were to publish where in your home all your valuables are, and when you’ll be away on vacation? Would that be free speech??? Why do you chose to be an idiot and not defend the law abiding citizen? You are a disgusting pathetic excuse for a human being.

@Meteors – Free speech has always had limits. You can’t yell fire in a crowded theater for a reason – because innocent people could get killed. Same thing here. Mapping out homes with names and addresses to give criminals license to break in and take the weapons – perhaps to kill those who live in the homes is downright MURDER!

Any gun taken from these homes and then used in a crime should have every person who works for that paper arrested and jailed for the crime – the same as the criminals – as they are just as guilty. In fact, a case can be made for conspiracy to commit murder since they provided material information to the criminals to obtain the weapons. The case can be further made that these homes would never have been broken into in the first place had the paper not provided the material information.

Wow, I’m impressed that is a layer of intelligence beneath the superficial comments common here.

Lord says that what this newspaper did was Constitutionally protected, but that “society” should respond punitively, presumably by not supporting this news organization. Lord, good answer, you are correct. That’s the answer: remove financial support. That’s what happened to a FOX personality a year or so ago, as well as personalities such as Ted Nugent (dropped from the Discovery Channel).

RJ and LIBSALWAYSLIE both recognize that there are reasonable restrictions on the 1st Amendment and both quote Supreme Court Justice Holmes in an opinion that said, yes, there are limits on the freedom of speech (Schenck v. United States).

Ironic isn’t it that both of you talk about “fire” in a theater, given the events in Aurora?

You both proclaim that there are reasonable restrictions on the right to free speech (“yelling fire in a theater”). So both agree there are reasonable restriction of the 1st Amendment.

So there are no reasonable restrictions of the 2nd Amendment? Why can’t I walk into a school or government building or library with a shotgun or AK-15? Don’t I have the right to “bear arms”?

Policemen in England don’t carry guns. And they are almost never killed. Policemen in the US carry guns and they are killed all the time.
      ***
Wanna try that again? We’re a different culture than the United Kingdom. Look at rape statistics. We are worse. Although like homicide there is a decreasing trend in the U.S. Probably due to the aging of the population.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_statistics#UN_Rape_Statistics

      U.S.about – 30 per 100k
      Scotland about – 18 per 100K
      England about – 25 per 100K

Why would England be worse than Scotland? Oh yeah England has London, a multicultural disaster.

Of course it is a lot easier to rape a woman if all she has is mace. But then Meatballs is probably really a man & does not give d/mn.

Meatballs is real bullish on call boxes with little blue flashers on them. So at least Meatballs can say they care. It always better to look like you care than to do something effective.

If meatballs had had her druthers, she would have personally disarmed that mother who defended herself & her children against the crowbar wielding robber. that woman should have called 911 & if she had to fight she should have engaged in hand to hand combat like liberals intended in the 1st place.

sendthemeteors, the paper will be sued. It will be sued very successfully and very often. YES, there are restrictions to the 2nd Amendment. About 20,000 of them… Unfortunately, many are unreasonable and need to be repealed. What does “shall not be infringed” mean? Its stated only once in the Constitution. Now, the unreasonable restrictions that exists, especially the gun-free zones are a main factor in the carnage we see. Lets not forget that Aurora, Sandy Hook, Columbine (just to name a few) were gun-free zones… Overwhelmingly, mass killings (no matter the means) have 2 things in common, a gun-free zone and a mentally deranged psycho… When you say “Why can’t I walk into a school or government building or library with a shotgun or AK-15 (AK47 or AR15)â€? Physically you can, but you won’t because you follow the law. As you can see, there are those who won’t follow the law… If some demented individual is bent on committing murder, do you really think he or she will worry about a weapons violation??????????? So, logic will dictate that gun-free zones are an idiotic idea that force citizens to be defenseless victims. It’s a restriction that is a proven massive universal failure, conducive to mass killings. It’s clearly evident that the opposite is far more sensible.

The most effective way to stop a bad person with a gun is with a good person with a gun. Please, lets not emulate the insane gun laws of Chicago…

According to progressives the first amendment is already a moot point because you cannot yell fire in a crowded theater. And they use that excuse to trim the second amendment. Except that is not what Holmes said. The First amendment does not protect you from consequences of foolish and harmful actions. If you yell fire in a crowded theater there had better be a fire. And if there is not you are not protected by the constitutional right.

The newspaper may print anything it wants, but it is liable for it’s actions and if based on the information they printed they caused an action to happen to a person they endangered, then that person ha a right to sue.

I see the paper backing the story by claiming this would NOT have happened if Guns were kept out of the hands of law abiding citizens. An excuse for them is that this is exactly what they are trying to prevent. If there were no guns in homes but were being held in “protective custody” such as is done in England and other countries, then the criminals would not have attempted the burglary in the first place. Think like a Lib and you can see that their is not to be reasonable. The ends merit the means.

Your right on !! Same thing Fast and Furious was all about. Arm the cartel’s, then create gun legislation in response to it…. Only problem is, the over bloated government has problems keeping secrets these days and the citizens found out…. NOt that the media cares at all, they are in on the plan, and owned by the very same people trying to get the guns out out of our hands. They would love nothing more than to remove the jaws and claws that stand between them and the Constitution. While they have gone so far as to influence a Republican supreme court judge by the way of Obamacare, to infringe on our constitutional rights, then most assuredly helped to fix the election since they come to find out they couldn’t buy off MItt … I am tired these bankers and the talking heads they employ as the so called 4th arm of the government. All I Can say is thank goodness for the internet, it has been the equalizer in this mess.Hopefully, the next candidate on our side realizes this and utilizes the net !! You know Hillary is next in line on the other side, and she has already openly admitted with George Soro’s that she is all for the New World Order. Love the fact that the Left has been persecuting conservative Murdoch in London since July, 2011 over tabloid phone hacking while the Left here leaks info ( often from the Obama White House ) on their front pages which endangers public safety and national security , but , of course, the Left is nor their media outlets are NEVER punished for said behavior.

The ACLU should go up there and sue the paper for not making the playing field equal for everyone. The paper should do a new list and include net worth on all that live in the listed area. A crook could use this to pick out the ones that aren’t in the hole and own their homes and have their gold stashed at home.

Yeah, its information that can be accessed in a limited manner for a reason. The newspaper gathered the information and built a database and a map to be used by the criminal element. I still think that there could be criminal and civil action that can be taken against the paper and those who made the decision to recklessly endanger the public at large. They have told the criminals where the weapons are if that is what they want, as well as mapping out for them the locations of homes that are unarmed.
And, to top it all, they’ve expressed the desire to do more of the same.

They’ll say that the information was already public record. If it is a public record online or that you have to visit the country clerk to see, it makes a robber more noticeable. If the record was view online thru a website detectives could see who viewed the records giving them a list of possible suspects. What the nimrods at the newspaper did was to allow robbers to view this anonymously. From that standpoint there might be a winnable lawsuit.

A response better than suing them where you probably lose is to boycott Gannett newspapers.
