Lara Logan Now Covers Dangerous Stories With ‘Valium and Red Wine’

Those who followed the “Arab Spring” revolts in Egypt in early 2011 undoubtedly remember CBS correspondent Lara Logan and the horrifying gang rape she suffered in the middle of Cairo’s Tahrir Square.
Nearly two years later, still working as a foreign correspondent with CBS, Logan has revealed how she tackled the trauma head-on after the attack, and how she now prepares herself before being sent on similarly dangerous assignments.
Deadline Hollywood caught up with Logan after a panel at the Television Critic’s Association convention Saturday:
When Deadline asked if the emotional trauma remained with her, she replied, “I think anything that happens to you on this scale stays with you forever.â€Â Logan continued, “Am I traumatized? Do I have bad dreams? No. And after it happened, when I got back from Egypt, I was honestly almost elated because I was so close to death and coming to terms with being gone.â€
The gravity of that event contrasted today with Logan’s vibrant, vivacious demeanor and striking appearance, which belied feelings that seem to reside just below the [surface.] “I was dying in that square,†she recalled, “and I never thought I would see my children again. After I got home, for weeks I couldn’t believe I was alive.â€
That she was able to muster the character, strength and survival skills to get through such an unfathomable physical and psychological ordeal seems still to surprise Logan. “You don’t realize until it happens to you that you have a choice not to fall apart,†she said. “I said, I have too much to live for.†Logan’s strength led her to approve a statement shortly after the attack that detailed how she was beaten and sexually assaulted and didn’t try to sweep the details under the carpet. She credited CBS News and president Jeff Fager for having the courage at the time “to decide not to lie about this. We weren’t going to lie about this.†[Emphasis added]

In this Feb. 11, 2011 photo released by CBS, “60 Minutes” correspondent Lara Logan is shown leaving Cairo’s Tahrir Square the day Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stepped down. (Photo: AP)
This isn’t the first time Logan has opened up about the attack, but the passage of time now allows her to discuss how she conquered the ordeal, rather than the trauma itself.
In a gut-wrenching CBS interview in May of 2011, Logan recalled how the mob — estimated at between 200 and 300 people– was “tearing” her body in “every direction” and beating her with flagpoles and sticks while raping her.
Shouting for help did nothing, she said, because her screams “turned them into a frenzy.”
Unbelievably, Logan still travels into dangerous, war-torn areas regularly. Deadline Hollywood has more on how Logan says she prepares:
“I honestly don’t think I could do it without Valium and red wine, I swear to God,†she admitted. “I just tank up the day before and I’m out the door. I couldn’t do it otherwise. I know it sounds weak. It’s the hardest thing, but I do it for reasons I truly believe in.â€
The Star adds that Logan still worries about her family while traveling abroad, though.
“I wrote a book for them. I tell them why I went to certain places. If I don’t make it back I want them to understand,” she is quoted as saying.

Posted on January 13, 2013 at 9:27pmThere is a difference between courage and blind ignorance .Ms.Logan used up her moments of innocence and applaudable courage .To repeat the situation is irresponsible ,foolish and ignorant .
I don’t know how you survive such severe trauma but i doubt self medicating and putting yourself into more dangerous situations is the answer.
Leaving her children with a book that makes excuses why she feels a need to run into danger isn’t an act of love. A book is no replacement for a parent.
That is pure selfishness .
Dying for a story in a 3rd world shethole will leave her children wondering she didn’t find them worth living for.

Posted on January 13, 2013 at 9:58pmThatsitivehadenough says, “Egotistical Liberals just can’t control their urges.” Good point. So here’s what I deduce from that. Non-egotistical liberals may or may not be able to “control their urges.” Conservatives, both egotistical or not, may or may not be able to “control their urges,” that’s not clear from Thatsitivehadenough’s statement of fact about “urges”.
So, Thatsitivehadenough, are you a egotistical Conservative who can “control your urges” or or you a non-egotistical Conservative who can “control your urges”?
What are these urges are trying to control anyway? Are you ashamed of your “urges” because those “urges” aren’t really accepted yet by Republicans? You know, like Larry Craig type urges?
Don’t worry Thatsitivehadenough, more and more Republicans are either being prosecuted or are coming out about their “urges.” You are not alone. You have many Republicans behind you, so to speak.

I agree with you for the most part, but there could well be an aspect of “getting back on the horse that threw you” to Ms. Logan’s conduct. Once you have ridden that horse, though, you should probably ride other horses.

Is that anything like all the urges the whack jobs on the left have routinely for years said about conservatives? Such as the repeated statements at public events about harming, killing or maiming conservatives, business owners or the percieved wealthy? It’s only been recently that conservatives have started that, then usually recant/explain the meaning behind the statements. For decades union thugs have spoken of their desires to have blood run through the streets. Yet conservatives repeatedly say take no actions except in defense of your life.
Think of it this way: if we violent, right-wing, conservative extremists were as violent as you communists/progressives/democrats/etc. say we are there would be none of you left.
However, the vast majority of mass shootings have been commited by self described liberals. And union members have assaulted more non-union members than vice versa. Over and over and over again the data shows that it is the progressive that has the inability to control their anger and actually uses force of arms. I’ve seen it in the stats and as a cop I have seen it in person. The latter mainly in regards to protests that turn violent or end up with more than one person attempting to break the law such as to break into a closed stock holders meeting. Conservative protesters are usually arrested for asking a liberal to not kill their baby, not attacking her for doing it.

Redo your analogy and replace Logan with a soldier that survied an IED blas as the lone survivor. It shows the falacy of much of your argument. There is a difference between HOOAH and HOOAH Stupid! While I believe Logan to be wrong for going back, mainly because she won’t be armed, her self medication is exactly the same as our troops who have been through traumatic events react. Self medication after trauma is a sign of PTSD. She needs to return to the field but not till she can do so without self medication.

The myth of the peace loving lovers of all that is good needs to be perpetuated so that it can be imported here to replace Christian values. We need to embrace the darkness so that it may stomp out all light and mercy in the world. Don’t you watch the nightly news? Putting herself in harm’s way; acknowledging the danger of death; the willingness to sacrifice her children’s mother; self medicating before going out into the field; these are all the marks of a person who has not come to terms with the horrific event of her life. She is probably gambling with her future to prove something to herself. Ms Logan needs psychological help, before she takes one too many pills.
CBS should be ashamed that they are allowing her to tempt fate yet again without her coming to terms with her gang rape and beating first.

Yes, she suffered SOME trauma, but it isn’t anything more than other people suffer every day.
Note how the leftist media has elevated her to godlike victim status, obviously of the opinion that what they do is so much more significant than what is involved in other professions and any problems they encounter deserves the undying gratitude opf the entire nation.
Journalists nowadays are leftist blurbs who can’t be trusted to reveal the truth anymore.

Posted on January 14, 2013 at 2:34pmThere is no way a woman can be gang raped like that and not have severe psychological damage done. Unfortunately, she tells us everything we need to know about how she “copes” with it. Burying something that deep and then piling valium and alcohol over it is a recipe for disaster down the line. Look, I understand going back into the field after severe trauma, but rape is something men have a hard time understanding from the perspective of women and, to women, it is severely life altering. Continuing to subject yourself to that possibility after it has happened once is not only stupid, but outright irresponsible. Especially when you have children.
Rape, in women, changes their entire psychology for the rest of their lives. If she wants to continue going into the line of fire, I’m all for it, but don’t expect me to even remotely give a damn if it happens again to her. I just feel for her children who will grow up around that kind of psychological damage.

If he has someone on that disagrees with him he badgers them. Miss Logan thought she was too *special* to heed warnings and common sense when she wandered out into a crowd of animals. She has a pain pump implant that pumps three kinds of medicines directly into her spine through a catheter fitted into her spine. Her life is wrapped around pain levels; from 8 ( good day) to 10 (bad day). She has been progressively getting worse and since there is no cure or way to repair the damage ,she is doomed to live with this debilitating disease. People think they can’t live without it, because the withdrawal symptoms are horrendous, and can last months. It takes months, even years, to successfully withdraw. I’ve seen this drug ruin people’s lives, just like many psychiatric drugs do. But our govt works with Big Pharma to ensure medicine is communally purchases, or purchased by big employers, so that it’s cheap and easy at point of purchase. Doctors can get sued if they don’t prescribe, but if they do prescribe and something goes wrong, Big Pharma gets sued. But that’s okay, since Big Pharma colludes with Big Govt to set Big Prices that cover R&D, liability, etc.
