Poll Results: Blaze Readers On Guns And The Second Amendment

Last week, TheBlaze invited you to participate in an online survey about guns, gun ownership, and the current debate about limiting or changing what is allowed by the Second Amendment. Our readers delivered almost 5 million responses to the 106 questions in the survey.

Before we break down some of the significant facts from this poll, let’s remind you of the make-up of a typical Blaze reader (statistics culled from last year’s poll that generated over 3 million responses).

100% believe in the right to bear arms
85% are at least 35-years
80% are homeowners
78% have children
76% are married
73% served in the U.S. military or have an immediate family member serving
71% of the respondents are male
66% own dogs (36% have cats)
63% have more than one gun
54% read more than 12 books a year
52% have taken a firearms safety class

If you take all of that data into account, the typical Blaze reader is a married man, a reader, over 35, who has a house, kids, dogs, and at least one gun. However, it should be noted that readership has expanded significantly since last year.

Last week, the typical Blaze reader (and many others) gave us some clarity on how they feel about the Second Amendment. We began our survey with 20 questions and then invited you to submit your own. In the end, we approved an additional 86 questions for a total of 106. Those questions triggered 4,876,394 responses.

The “most-agreed” upon question generated unanimous consensus. We asked, “Do you believe in the Second Amendment. Score – 100% YES.

The overall feeling about why the Second Amendment was written by the Founding Fathers had a similar response, generating 99% agreement.

99% Say “NO!”

There were many questions that generated some very strong responses. Each one of these had 99% “NO” response.

Will an assault rifle ban prevent violent crime?
Would you surrender your Second Amendment rights in exchange for a promise from the government to protect you from all harm?
Should the UN or any other foreign entity have any say about American gun rights or the Second Amendment?
Should a gun owners address be published?
Did you vote President Obama?

Before you think that the majority of those responding are card-carrying NRA members or concealed-carry permit holders, look at these two questions:

The polling giant Gallup has been surveying America on guns and the Second Amendment for decades. You might find it interesting to know that the majority of Americans agree with TheBlaze readers on the average citizen’s right to own a firearm.

The Gallup survey, taken just a week after the Sandy Hook massacre, showed a 2% drop in those who would call for a handgun ban. Support for banning gun ownership has actually decreased by 8% in the past decade.

Looking deeper into TheBlaze gun poll:

88% own a gun
75% have owned a gun for more than a decade and they have more than two guns in their home.
74% think that every home in America should have a gun.
72% of respondents have taken a firearms safety class. However, only 37% believe that gun buyers should be required to pass a basic firearms skills test prior to being sold a weapon.

Again, contrasting with the results from Gallup, at 88%, TheBlaze readers are twice as likely to own a gun as the rest of America.

According to Gallup, the last time America had more than 50% gun ownership was 1993 (it was 51% that year).

TheBlaze readers seem to be concerned that gun ownership could be at risk or become much more difficult in the very near future. Eighty-seven percent said they are “going to or (are) considering” the purchase of a firearm in the near future.

Among those taking our poll, there was also an overwhelming sense that some action by the Obama administration is inevitable.

91% believe that the President will use an Executive order to enact a gun ban if Congress will not
89% are worried that gun confiscation will be attempted before years end
98% say they will not willingly surrender their firearms if confiscation is ordered
64% have purchase ammunition in the past three months
45% have purchased a firearm in the past six months

A sizable number of gun-owning voters in TheBlaze audience are also very clear on how they plan to deal with politicians who vote to compromise the Second Amendment.

That’s a 97% “yes” to one of the “most-answered” questions in our poll. Members of the House and Senate up for re-election in the 2014 mid-terms would be wise to take note of voter sentiment in cases like this.

The survey also showed an overwhelming lack of interest in any form of government monitoring of firearms and firearm sales.

96% also said no thanks to putting a tracking chip in guns
93% think the Feds do not belong at gun shows
83% oppose mandatory checkups on gun licenses like there are for driver’s licenses
76% don’t want gun show sales monitored by local police or governments

Our survey also confirmed what is probably expected of a group that strongly supports gun ownership:

99% believe that banning assault rifles will not prevent violent crime (In a separate question only 6% supported the reinstatement)
99% also believe that disarming law-abiding citizens will not reduce violent crime

What we found surprising is that Gallup’s recent survey on the possibility of reinstating a ban on assault rifles (taken after the Sandy Hook murders) showed no real increase in popular support for this action. A majority of America is still against such a ban.

The massive response to our poll proved what many on our editorial staff strongly suspected: TheBlaze audience is filled with staunch defenders of the right to “keep and bear arms.” And that right is also supported by members of our audience who do not own a gun.

On Tuesday of this week, Vice President Joe Biden is expected to meet with President Obama and present his suggestions for taking action on access to guns and the rights of gun owners in America. TheBlaze has reported that NRA President David Keene does not believe legislation that would ban assault rifles will pass. Keene is concerned (as are Blaze readers) that Mr. Obama will use the power of Executive Order to do whatever he wants to do on guns.

Every weapon I own is for self defense. My knives, swords, guns, fists, feet, rocks, clubs, my dogs & my friends. All for protection from the likes of Feinstein, Reid, Pelosi, Holder and Osama Obama. I know who my enemies are and what my Rights are. I will never compromise those Rights to any foreign government, especially the one in D.C.

The current socalled “assault weapons” LOOK exactly like REAL assault weapons. A rifle that looks like a regular hunting rifle (one trigger pull/one shot fired) is not villified by the lefties. They go after the weapon that LOOKS like the real thing (even tho one trigger pull/one shot fired). They see the current AR (Armorlite Rifle NOT Assault Rifle) and it triggers their idiocy. Yes the AR is lighter and has some other advantages but still one shot at a time. I took basic training with the M14. Yea it is kinda heavy. But, most lefties would just scratch their head and wonder what the hell it is.

I do carry frequently. Fortunately I live in a state where a permit isn’t required.

I believe in the whole of the Constitution & the Bill of Rights.
A renewed AWB won’t work any more than the first one did. Nothing short of a good person with a weapon will stop a bad person or a crazy person with a weapon.

I had a dream last night!

Wal-Mart has declared war on it’s customers.
This is not a drill, this is not a test, this is not a video game. This is the real deal.

Obama has declared war on America. Wal-Mart has taken sides by deciding to NO
Longer carry Ammo. This is a backhanded way for Obama to disarm us.

Heres’s the proof.

Here’s the plan. Let Wal-Mart know we are serious and we are not going to fight by relying on e-mail and phone calls! They have provoked us to action.

Go to Wal-Mart.

Start in the frozen, dairy and meat section. Load up. Go for the high value products. Then produce, anything perishable.

Now wander the stores belly, the clothing and general mdse sections. Add to the cart(s).

Now go to sporting goods and look for and request Ammo. If the clerk says they have none or they are no longer carrying it, tell them that was the most important item you came in for. Walk away, leave the cart right there.

For the braver among us an alternate method to get more bang for the buck and get immediate attention of other shoppers. Take the cart(s) and go through check out.
When the clerk gives you the total, hand them a paper that simply reads in bold Wal-Mart blue.

NO AMMO, NO CUSTOMERS!

It might be a good idea to have some hand out’s to inform other patriotic customers you’re sure to run into.

Sheesh. On your homepage for this article, Glenn, you have a photograph of two people exchanging a firearm in a reckless, unsafe, and dangerous manner. Teach your people the rudiments of gun safety — and stop teaching dangerous gun etiquette. Have you not been taught correctly?

The proper way to exchange a weapon is to point it in a safe direction, one in which no living thing is down range, put the safety on, remove the magazine, rack the pistol, examine the receiver to make sure that no round remains in the chamber or weapon. Once you are sure that the gun contains no rounds, hand the gun *sideways* to the recipient with the breach open. The recipient then examines the gun for himself in the same manner, safety on, no round in the chamber of the gun/pistol/revolver. At no time should the weapon be pointed at anyone! It’s just the first rule of gun safety, always assume that the gun is loaded, even when you are absolutely sure it ‘isn’t.’ NEVERgrab the gun by the muzzle. Dumb idea. Besides, it only gets your corrosive skin oils on the metal.

Sheesh, The Blaze should know better. Teaching proper gun safety and etiquette can start right here on The Blaze. To do otherwise is irresponsible. I would expect CNN and all other the other leftist outlets to publish stupid pictures like this, but not The Blaze. Take more care in the selection of photographs.

  In case the pull the photo, it showed on person grasping the pistol by the muzzle/barrel, that other person had the hand fully on the grip. The gun is clearly pointing at the belly of the person grabbing the barrel. Not cool.

Something I think all you people are forgetting. An executive order is NOT a legally binding LAW of the land. Either way, I refuse to be told I have to register or cannot conceal carry by an ORDER that isnt LAW.

Like so many complicated subjects this one two must be tempered with some common sense. I believe that Americans should maintain the right to keep and bear arms for any reason. That said, there must be some common sense used to temper that right which is self imposed and in very extreme cases mandated by government. What are called weapons by themselves are completely harmless, its not until they are used as instruments to inflict upon other humans to either threaten or inflict danger of life and limb, that they actually become weapons. We live in an age where law and government have become inept at the ability to protect the average citizen. With the vast influx of illegal aliens, the institution of applied dialectics, and the portrayal by Hollywood and others that criminals and criminal acts increase ones persona (it’s cool); people need an credible threat to the massive lawlessness which now abides in American society.
Consideration needs to be given to increasing conceal carry for every citizen, however it must occur with adequate training. Should teachers be included in that activity? Yes and with the weight of deputy sheriff to back up their authority to carry. American citizens must always have the right to meet any credible threat to life and limb with an equal threat that is under their direct control, without fear of politically motivated reprisal, where legal defensive acts are politicized as criminal by the media and select politicians.

How many other amendments and clauses have the 16th Amendment, Commerce clause, and Indirect Tax clause, been used to crush so far? Any reason to assume they won’t use them on guns (again)?
The 16th needs repealing. Commerce and taxation need clarification; so, that they can’t continue to be abused in the way they have been.

I wonder if anyone on this board has every seen a news story on the Mid East? Have any of you seen the sixth century Barbarians using shoulder fired missiles ? How about bazookas and AKs as well as ARs? How about the hand grenades they are filmed throwing at our Troops? Guess where they got them from. The good old US GOVERNMENT through second and third party Suppliers. So that means OUR GOVERNMENT is arming OUR ENEMIES. That is the definition of Treason. Our Ambassador to Libya was murdered in cold blood by an act of this Government. And we are here arguing over letting them take our guns. I don’t think I will let them have mine .THANKS.

Sad enough the North American Union is proabaly being ushered in during the right to bare arms debate. But we can’t give up one to save the other, we must fight for both.

Our country is important, and without about 13-14 million new illegal imoprts. This country cannot stand more people with their hands out, but believe me this is what Obama want’s.

So people keep you eye on the ball, it’s time to pull together to stop the evil that is happeneing in this country, if we all work together we can stop these fools.
