Deaf Twin Brothers in Belgium Euthanized After Finding Out They Were Also Going Blind

Twin brothers in Belgium who were deaf since birth, lived in the same apartment and worked as cobblers were euthanized by lethal injection last month after they learned they were losing their eyesight as well.

The identical 45-year-olds couldn’t bear the thought of eventually not being able to see each other any more, the Daily Telegraph reported. It was an unusual cased based on Belgium’s law, which allows euthanasia by request if the doctor also considers the patient in unbearable pain.  New additions to the law also allow for euthanasia of children and patients with Alzheimer’s, according to the Telegraph.

These men, though, were not terminally ill or physically suffering in the traditional sense.

Here’s more from the Telegraph featuring Dr. David Dufour, who presided over the euthanasia decision that was carried out on December 14, 2012:

“They were very happy. It was a relief to see the end of their suffering,” he said.

“They had a cup of coffee in the hall, it went well and a rich conversation. The separation from their parents and brother was very serene and beautiful. At the last there was a little wave of their hands and then they were gone.”

After its initial report, which did not name the brothers, the Telegraph in a separate article identified them as Marc and Eddy Verbessem. The story had an added controversial twist at this point as the Telegraph reported the first time the twins requested euthanasia, they were denied. They sought out a hospital that would consider their argument that they were in fact in unbearable pain at the thought of not seeing each other and would allow for the mercy killing they requested.

Here’s what the twins’ older brother Dirk Verbessem told the Telegraph:

“Many will wonder why my brothers have opted for euthanasia because there are plenty of deaf and blind that have a ‘normal’ life,” he said. “But my brothers trudged from one disease to another. They were really worn out.”

Mr Verbessem said his twin brothers were going blind with glaucoma and that Eddy had a deformed spine and had recently undergone heart surgery.

“The great fear that they would no longer be able to see, or hear, each other and the family was for my brothers unbearable,” he said.

The Telegraph pointed out that in 2011 about 1,133 patients were euthanized. If euthanasia as a practice wasn’t controversial enough, it also noted that some of the organs of patients euthanized in the country were being harvested. With a shortage of some organs for transplant, this would raise the issue of patients who might not otherwise be candidates for euthanasia potentially being cleared anyway.

This is wrong and evil. You end your life out of fear of what MAY come? This is why governments like ours want to erase religion from society,so the government can define who is not worthy of life, and allow the family to end their burdensome existence. This is sick. I think the family did this to them, like a dog being led to the vet to have his balls cut off,not knowing what awaits him.

Democrats love to adopt the european ways. This should be coming to a city near you soon. If America doesn’t take a stand, we will end up just like these countries. Thats a very Hitlerish thing Belgium is allowing. Hitler was big into euthanasia and he based most of his ideology off of evolution.

Wow, just wow. I can’t believe you can go to a doctor to be put to sleep like an animal. If you want to die, then do it to yourself. You are committing suicide either way, just don’t put it in the hands of a medical professional. What’s any different if the “medical professional” used a pistol and shot them in the head vs sticking an IV in them? No difference. This is just bizarre.

This is heartbreaking and disgusting (as it would have been for newborns). I wish these men had Jesus in their lives, then they would not have thrown away a gift of each other, artistry and whatever else was still in store for them. I also pray for those disturbed people who assisted in their suicide.

“It is what it is” has been being repeated AD NAUSEUM by Globots to each other the world over for no less than a couple of decades.

Over and over and over and over and over….repeater brainwashing.

They use this phrase CONSTANTLY to dismiss with a “little wave” the everyday murders, appalling abuse and other unbelievable atrocities being committed by their fellow Evil-Doers any where you care to see it, including your own family.

They know years or decades in advance who is on “The List.” In meeting that person, a Globot will be incredibly abusive and rude, which should be an indicator to anyone on the receiving end of this treatment.

They are conditioned with “Stop-Thought” techniques and neuroplasty, and pampered with rewards to distance themselves from any vestige of a former conscience.

So I have a right to life, but not a right to death? Give me a break. It’s MY life, if I chose I would rather not live it, then so be it. Who are YOU to tell me when I can or cannot die?

I think even if you’re a completely healthy person you should be allowed to request euthanasia. At the end of the day you can’t stop someone from killing themselves (nor should you). If you tell me I can’t be euthanized I’ll slit my wrist, jump off a building, blow my brains out, drink some poison, drown in a river. If I want to die there is nothing anyone can do to stop me. This law just makes that passing easier for all parties involved: the activist, the family, and the taxpayer (no one has to pay for any cleanup)

You may not want it to happen to you or your loved ones, but don’t tell me a human being doesn’t have a right to die when he or she chooses. If you have nothing else in this world, it should be to choose when you leave.

Call them cowards, call them whatever. The fact of the matter is that this is legally on the books for them to do. Then of course once it becomes more and more common place they will make it mandatory at a certain age. This is coming to America under little hitler kill ya care, make no mistake about it. They will have the voluntary bit to get it accepted then it will become mandatory.

Why doesn’t the media expose the truth about organ donation/harvesting?
The patient’s heart is not stopped until AFTER all the other organs are harvested.
Organs must be harvested while the patient is still alive or else the organs begin to deteriorate immediately. How do we know that the patient felt no pain?

This is not correct. Postmortem organ donation is the prevalent one since death must occur before the actual harvesting may begin. Now the definition of death was the absence of regular heartbeats. It is being replaced by the lack of brain activity. flatlining EEG. If that is the policy, than the hartebeest is not proof of life, but proof of organ activity. The patient, as in person, is dead. A pulsating mass of red muscle does not negate that fact.

The idea that one must be a “coward” to kill themselves in all situations is bogus. You gotta have some balls to go through with killing yourself. You could say Bernie Maddof’s son is a coward or killing himself and Bernie Maddof is a coward for not killing himself. The suffering deteriorating patient who wants to die rather than killthemselves may also be a lack of strength. If you can’t see how a degenerating person who would prefer not to die and doesn’t want to but decides to take control nd die on their own volition requires a megaton of courage you either are dense or you have absolutely no clue as to what its like to be in a chronic degenerating disease state. I would say nothin about it till you walk a mile in their shoes man.

Star Trek The Next Generation – “Half a Life” I think it was, with Majel Barrett and David Ogden Stiers, where they encountered a world where everyone had to commit suicide at 60 so they wouldn’t become a “burden” to their families. But there was a lovely ceremony beforehand, thus making it all okay.

Something tells me you missed the point of that episode of TNG, my friend. The beauty of Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as its preceding and proceeding installments in the Prime Universe, is that it explores a litany of unbelievably deep topics in a 45 minute spread of time per episode; self-determination is one of the most prevalent of those topics.

In fact, Captain Janeway even argued in FAVOR of Q (later renamed Quinn after being transformed into human form), in Star Trek: Voyager, relieving himself of his omnipotence and immortality in order to commit suicide. To use that one debate, which is tangentially related at best, as determination of what Roddenberry decreed is laughable.

So, they should’ve just been made to live by force? Should the government have stepped in and said, “we’re going to force you to stay alive?”

Without Government intervention — aka the government getting to decide if someone has the ‘right’ to live or die — there is no easy answer to this. The two men wanted to die, and a doctor carried that out for them so they wouldn’t have to do the act themselves.

How can you have a small government that doesn’t push itself into your private life when some of you seem to be saying that the government should’ve forced these two men to stay alive and suffer?

Unbelievably I agree with you on something, finally.

If this is private choice it’s a private matter and nobody’s business but theirs. It’s not pleasant, and we don’t have to agree with their reasons, but their reasons are their own. If it’s a sin, then they have God to answer to in the afterlife, and that’s again a matter of free will choice with consequences attached under that assumption.

The problem is the oath a doctor takes. “Do no harm”

Self euthenasia is called suicide. It happens in all countries, and there are plenty of painless ways to do it. Having someone else do it for you makes you a coward and places an ethical burden on others. It’s one thing if you can’t do it yourself, it’s another if you can and have someone else do it for you.

I am against suicide for religious belief’s but other’s may indulge in it as long as they’ve taken the steps necessary to take care of the mess they will leave behind and do not involve others in their choice. That means, jumping in front of buses, trains, cars… jumping off buildings to public areas… leaving a body for EMT’s or rescue crews to recover… etc. etc. Think before you do it.

I am against euthenasia as practiced in Europe, it makes us a weaker people, both emotionally and morally, but I understand the desire for it. I just don’t approve of things that make us weaker as a people.

Wow, that’s pretty twisted logic. The government wouldn’t force them to live; it just wouldn’t let them hire someone to murder them. One of the few legitimate purposes of government is to protect life – even the life of fools like these. These guys had glaucoma – an easily treated disease and were not blind – just worried they would be. What a shame and what a waste. I find it fascinating that government allows force to be used to vaccinate people but should not prevent them from murder. That’s a completely backwards ethic – and one that is becoming more popular with the logic-impaired liberal.

If you’re an adult of sound mind and you want to end your agonizing suffering what’s the point of suffering? And why do we have more compassion for an animal? It’s none of the governments business if you want to end your suffering, they torment us enough while we’re alive and insist on a terminally ill person to suffer until they die? Sounds like the government is evil to me. If the government were to get involved that’s where it goes bad because then it could lead to genocide, that’s why it isn’t the governments business in the first place, stay out of it it’s a personal decision.

These two were not terminally ill – or suffering. They were likely depressed, or otherwise mentally ill – but instead of treating them for mental illness, the government agreed to murder them.

You – and the other posters who agree with you – are part of the problem with society today. Your basis of morality is only “does it feel good to me?” If it feels good to you, that is the only thing that matters and therefore no one has a right to say you are wrong. After all, you are, well YOU, and who could possibly tell YOU that you could ever be wrong, if it feels good to YOU? Yet you consider not one whit the consequences of your philosophy or your choices on others – YOU are preeminent and all that matters. Since you cannot consider that any other world view could possibly be valid, your mind is closed. You are arrogant in your nihilism, yet profoundly ignorant that you have debased yourself to an unconscious animal.

“…euthanasia by request if the doctor also considers the patient in unbearable pain. New additions to the law also allow for euthanasia of children and patients with Alzheimer’s, according to the Telegraph.” What’s frightening about this case is that neither brother had gone blind, and the pain they felt was psychic rather than physical. Dealing with the reality of a handicap – especially one that has not yet befallen a person – is something for the psychiatric profession or the pastor, not for Dr. Death. As for why we “put down” animals, we don’t if they are still capable of having a decent quality of life. I’ve had deaf cats that died of natural causes when they were 20 years old – they still enjoyed sitting in a sunbeam, eating, pouncing on toys, watching kittens (!) and sitting on laps. The animals we put down are those that are clearly in physical pain that is impossible to alleviate.

“I would take euthanasia over dying a slow horrible death… it should be my choice.”

Thanks for joining my thoughts, posted just above!

Yeah, I’ve watched 2 people die horrible deaths by cancer. People should have the option if desired say goodbye to family after some dinner and drinks – instead of thinned out, yellowed skin, gasping for air “living” as merely a shadow of their former selves.

I’ve never understood how “helping” your dog into the great void is considered human but for some reason doing the same for a beloved human is considered murder.

“.. some of the organs of patients euthanized in the country were being harvested. With a shortage of some organs for transplant, this would raise the issue of patients who might not otherwise be candidates for euthanasia potentially being cleared anyway.”

If you think that at some point they won’t force people into suicide for their organs, you are naive in the first order.

It was their right no matter how much I would disagree with it. It should be everyone’s right to self terminate as long as they’re mentally capable of making the choice.

Can anyone tell me what is going on. If I post, I’m set as ‘log in to reply’. I must have been logged in to reply in the first place. Anyone else having that problem?

Not for those of us with any sense.

Nobody has a right to take their own life. Just like every other bottom-feeding, leftist idea – it starts off small and harmless and grows into a beast that cannot be controlled. It’s what happens to those with a shoddy moral compass.

A person has a right to refuse treatment but can someone be truly said to be in their right mind if they are asking to be killed. In this case one could even argue that the decision was made under duress since these twins were faced with an uncertainty that clearly made them feel terrified of living.

If you don’t think that abortion has made our country and our young people immune to the horrors of what is done when a baby is dismembered and sucked out, then comes the old people who have “lived a long life” and are taking up room on the earth, then the handicapped, then the homeless, the unwanted and pretty soon it will be the 3rd reich all over again, if not already. I can’;t even imagine this country after 0b0z0 and his reich get through with it. I guess I’m lucky I won’t be around too much longer, but thank you I will die when the Lord decides and not 0b0z0 and his minions!
