The Syrian military likely used chemical weapons against its own people during an attack last month, according to a secret State Department cable.
The Cable’s Josh Rogin reports that United States diplomats in Turkey “conducted a previously undisclosed, intensive investigation into claims that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons, and made what an Obama administration official who reviewed the cable called a ‘compelling case’ that Assad’s military forces had used a deadly form of poison gas.”
The cable was signed by the U.S. consul general in Istanbul, Scott Frederic Kilner and later sent to the State Department’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. The secret cable discusses the consulate’s investigation into the reports that Syria used chemical weapons during a Dec. 23 attack in the city of Homs.
More from The Cable:
The consul general’s report followed a series of interviews with activists, doctors, and defectors, in what the administration official said was one of the most comprehensive efforts the U.S. government has made to investigate claims by internal Syrian sources. The investigation included a meeting between the consulate staff and Mustafa al-Sheikh, a high-level defector who once was a major general in Assad’s army and key official in the Syrian military’s WMD program.
An Obama administration official who reviewed the document, which was classified at the “secret” level, detailed its contents to The Cable. “We can’t definitely say 100 percent, but Syrian contacts made a compelling case that Agent 15 was used in Homs on Dec. 23,” the official said.
The use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime would cross the “red line” President Barack Obama first established in an Aug. 20 statement. “We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. That would change my calculus. That would change my equation,” Obama said.
To date, the administration has not initiated any major policy changes in response to the classified cable, but a Deputies Committee meeting of top administration officials is scheduled for this week.

Jan. 16, 2013 at 5:29pmObama’s words were chosen carefully. The key to the red line is the definition of “a whole bunch”. So, did they use or move around a whole bunch of chemical weapons? They may have killed 10,000 innocent people with chemical weapons in one use, but if they didn’t use “a whole bunch” of chemical weapons to kill them it’s no big deal. Obama has zero integrity.

problem like you’ve handled all the other problems facing our nation, I expect you will do absolutely
nothing, except make another speech.

Jan. 16, 2013 at 3:37amYou really think for a minute, our King Obama would do something to hurt his fellow brotherhood members? Maybe give Egypt another billon or so and they will broker a truce.. Limit use of assault weapons and clips of 7 rounds at a time and chemical weapons only once in a while when all else fails and no one is looking..

Jan. 15, 2013 at 10:13pmThe latest propaganda phrase in the Marxist Media is “used against its own people” but what they aren’t saying is they are rebels. We could say in the Civil War the US North used guns against its own people in the South, but we know it was during a civil war. Same thing here. These are rebels who are using weapons against Syria’s government as well. There aren’t little kids playing in the park getting gassed.
Kind of like how the Democrats view conservatives as enemies and would like to gas them if they had the chance. Of course then it wouldn’t be “used against its own people” it would be “used against dangerous, evil racists” or some other propaganda to justify it.

A gun is a rather simple weapon. You point it at your enemy and shoot. Chemical weapons involve dispersing gas over a large area, hence the term WMD. And while one can take shelter from bombs, gas is more thorough. For that reason, using it in populated areas is seen as being immoral as indiscriminately bombing or shooting civilians.

Jan. 15, 2013 at 7:57pmAre we really surprised the admin would keep something secret that would make them into liars if they don’t respond after their ‘red line’ is crossed? But as pro gun, conservative and pro military as I am, being an Army vet, I can’t see us going in regardless of how bad it gets for the Syrians, as regardless of who wins, they aren’t going to suddenly become our friends or respect us for it. It’s a lose lose to act in Syria.

Jan. 15, 2013 at 10:28pmI think it is a lose lose.
Maybe the best way to play it is the way the CIA wanted play Afghanistan initially. They saw it as a way to bleed the Soviet Union. They did not actually believe at the the start the could reverse the course of the war.
If we bleed Assad, Hezbollah & Iran on one side and bleed Al Qaeda, the Muslim Brotherhood & the sponsors on the other side, that would be good.

Jan. 15, 2013 at 7:06pmHow did the secret cable get leak?
There’s been so many lies regarding Libya, Egypt, and even Israel that I no longer believe that these things are “leaked” anymore. It’s stamped with the piece on rubber that says confidential and then unconventionally handed to media sources and called “leaked” as to give it some sort of street cred with the American people.
Sorry, I no longer believe anything my federal government tells me it believes, either from the side of the Republicrats or the Democans.
If we go into Syria it’s only because the world financial situation can be pushed back no further, we’re out of time, and it’s time for the war for the world, WWIII.
Make no mistake, any country’s foreign war with Syria is WWIII. Syria is the line in the sand and I don’t think anyone knows which side of the line the U.S. is standing; and in war when you stand in the middle of the road as we are, you get hit from both sides.
