‘Seek Justice for Immigrants’: 150 Liberal & Conservative Evangelicals Launch Massive ‘Biblical’ Immigration Campaign
Evangelical Christians are, once again, coming out en force to push for immigration reform. On Thursday, an array of faith leaders came together to throw their weight behind the Evangelical Immigration Table (EIT), a collective of pastors and preachers who are intent on seeing immigration reform enacted. TheBlaze first reported about this group back in June 2012, noting the fact that the initiative successfully bridges the divide between liberals like Jim Wallis and conservatives like Richard Land. Now, the movement has released a new video — and a challenge initiative — calling for believers to join in the push to revamp the nation’s immigration system.
The video, entitled, “I Was a Stranger,” is intended to spark Christian participation in a challenge that goes by the same name. The clip’s description reads, “Evangelical leaders read from Matthew 25:31-46 in this video designed to help launch the ‘I Was a Stranger’ Challenge, encouraging Christians to allow their thinking about immigration to be informed by biblical principles.”

In addition to reading the verses, the pastors depicted in the video hope that viewers will take the “I Was a Stranger Challenge,” a proclamation that calls believers to pray for 40 days, while reflecting on the many Bible verses that deal with the complex issue of immigration. The goal is to motivate the faith community to take action, as individuals can also challenge their churches, campuses and communities to engage on the issue. Here’s how the challenge is framed:
Taking part in the challenge is simple. We’ve prepared a bookmark that lists forty different short biblical passages that relate in one way or another to the topic of immigration. Get your bookmark…stick it in your Bible, and commit to reading one passage each day for forty consecutive days. Set aside some time each day to pray as well, asking God to help you to see immigrants as he does, and also praying for elected officials, who have the responsibility of crafting public policies that dramatically impact the lives of immigrants.

A screen shot from the “I Was a Stranger Challenge” web site
“The heart of why evangelical Christians believe we should love, welcome, and seek justice for immigrants is our commitment to the authority of Scripture over every aspect of our lives,” reads the web site advertising the challenge. “The Bible speaks clearly and repeatedly to God’s concern for the immigrant, guiding the Christ-follower toward principles that we believe should inform both the interpersonal ways that we interact with our immigrant neighbors and the public policies that we support.”
Watch the video, below:
Christianity Today has more about the new push for the EIT as well as the coincidental timing — especially considering President Barack Obama’s expected advocation of changes to the current system — of the leaders’ push for reform:
More than 150 evangelical leaders have renewed their calls for comprehensive immigration reform by signing on to the Evangelical Immigration Table (EIT), a relatively new initiative that unites, among others, unlikely partners such as Sojourners and the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. According to CNN, a new video launched today will serve as the campaign’s “first concerted push on immigration, with the goal of getting meaningful immigration reform through Congress in 2013.”
And if all goes according to the president’s plan, new legislation could come as early as August, reports The New York Times. Obama will urge the newly inaugurated 113th Congress to move quickly on an immigration reform package that likely will include a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, as well as “nationwide verification of legal status for all newly hired workers; add visas to relieve backlogs and allow highly skilled immigrants to stay; and create some form of guest-worker program to bring in low-wage immigrants in the future.”
While not explicitly citing Obama’s purported plans, the diverse faith leaders involved seek to fix what they see as a “moral, economic and political crisis” in America surrounding current immigration policies. For more about the EIT’s campaign, “I Was a Stranger,” click here.

I cant believe you would carry on spouting your BS like that. “The law, the law, what about the law” Yeah right and when Obama signs the new gun ban laws what will you say then “Oh that’s just a stupid law I don’t have to follow it”. “I’m an American and God only granted Americans rights.” You don’t realize that you’re marginalizing a group of people that could have very well helped you vote out Obama had you not been so full of yourselves thinking you could do it alone. Shame on all of you for not having the slightest sliver of a heart or soul. People wonder why this country is going to crap, ITS YOU!!! LOOK IN THE DAMN MIRROR AND PICK APART YOURSELF before you tear into someone else. I hate this world for what y’all have done to it and I hate your guts for being so closed minded that you can’t see that this country is the way it is because OF YOU!!! Posted on January 16, 2013 at 8:12amYou have no clue do you? It is not the United States who has been around the world placing their flag over the country that was there. How many countries have been or are still under the British flag. And let me tell you don’t think for one second that illegal immigrants aren’t sucking this country dry. Legal or illegal, they are getting every government handout they can, and most will do it from birth to death. You are probably one who thinks that we should not populate more because we will destroy the world, maybe you should go after the 25- 30 yr old hispanic couple I saw the other day with six children. Each birth certificate probably receives snap, wic, and any other gorvernment vote buying payment they can get. If you think this is not true than do some real research, not just look for what may justify what you tell yourself. Don’t think for one second either that illegals pay taxes. Why do you think most of them work as contract labors. Because it’s easy to hide your true income so you can get more freebies. And while you are on your high horse, why don’t you research how many other countries just allow you to pop on in and stay and suck off the government teet! NONE! That is your answer. And any views God had on immigration was about people helping people not about the government saying we are going to take what you have and give it to these people who showed up wanting our government forced handout!

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 10:54amAs mentioned previously, with all due respect where are these so called Evangelical leaders coming up with the necessity to push for Immigration reform. I have been a christian whose learned and respected not only the word of God with the acts of forgiveness, saved by grace and receiving Jesus as Lord and Savior but also learned His word, which is obvious it is not being used appropriately here and I am not being judgmental and have served a bit with missions and ministry.
Abraham as well as Jesus and others made clear concise comments without hesitation or excuse that people, any people(s) should never make themselves a burden to a country, government or its people by overstaying their welcome when going into another land not their own. “Give honor to who/where honor is due”, “as a sojourner remember not to sojourn in a land beyond the time”, in other words and respectfully, you don’t go into another nation ‘illegally’, stay there and expect not to have laws of their land and government to accomodate you, only you and think you can change those governments laws to suite yourself. Even Abraham and others spoke of this, its about giving respect, obeying the laws of the land and ‘don’t overstay your welcome’! No excuse to forget this

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 11:18amThe laws is the Constitution it’s states that Obama must as president enforce all the laws that are in place and preserve and protect the Constitution.
Using an executive order to over turn immigration laws passed by Congress and approved by the supreme court …is Unconstituional
Using executive orders or Congress to rob us of our second amendment is UNCONSTITION
So in defying ours actions we are obeying the law the law that grants you free speech, religion,a trial by jury, personal property protect,a fair trial, and a host of other freedom as well…..BY NOT ALLOWING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO TAKE UNCONSTITUTIONAL ACTIONS.
When they came for everyones with guns I said nothing because I didn’t own a gun
When they came for people of religion I said nothing because I wasn’t religious
when came for my for conservatives I’ld said nothing because I was liberal
When they came for liberals I looked around and no one was left to protect me
In other words if you side with a government still other peoples rights don’t be suprised when they come for yours.

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 1:28pmLet me speak for one minute about immigrants. My grandparents. They actually took the time to “take out papers” from their home country and legally immigrate here. They had to pay a small fee. They had to do some paper work. They had to submit to an interview. They were law abiding citizens in their own home country with no criminal record. They were looking for gainful employment in the United States. They were willing to work any job. And they did. My grandfather worked in saw mills and ship yards and he would have swept a grocery store for money. Now, let us compare MY GRANDPARENTS to the MILLIONS of immigrants in this country who have not bothered to pay a small fee nor fill out paperwork nor conduct an interview but are here in the United States and are squatting on the land. How does this compare? There is a process for people to be granted political asylum if they are in danger in their home country as well. So, why did these 15 million or so NOT go through the regular process of immigration? Because they think they don’t have to. They think they are above the laws. They think they don’t have to get in line behind DECENT people who are actually law abiding and are waiting in line to get here with their paperwork filled out and their fees in hand. This is sheer arrogance on their part and rebellion. They need to get in line like everybody else. This we call “equality” or don’t you get that fact? Get in line. With your paperwork and $$. Like everyone else.

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 1:32pmIm a little confused about this entire subject. Disappointed in Max Lucado and a couple others. I don’t consider Jim Wallis to be a man of God so no surprise there. Christians love people..no denying that at all. But WHERE pray tell, is this big “injustice” they keep talking about? Are we supposed to feel sorry for illegals who can’t openly get a job (SS card-BC-DL-background check) and pay into the system?? In many ways I envy them for not being “stuck” in this system! Theres an illegal guy who mows lawns for cash in my neighborhood and the guy is making a killing without paying taxes. Plus, in this liberal state we have soooo many policies that give illegals money and resources galor! Now seriously…where is the INJUSTICE? These people probably LOVE being in the shadows and out of the reach of government! Maybe the injustice is the fact that they are robbing our country blind? Maybe thats the “injustice” of which they speak>>??

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 2:28pmYour comments are sick and full of hate and derision for the rule of law in America. You are lawless and rebellious and that is not a good combination. If you “love” someone then you discipline them. You correct them when they are doing wrong. 15 million people are here illegally with no respect or regard for the rule of law or the land. They are a burden to this system. They are flaunting their lawlessness and rebellion by staying here and squatting on the land, paying no taxes, contributing nothing to the services they are overwhelming and bankrupting. They are the one of the main sources of the bankrupt status of the United STates. Tell me? What kind of people purposefully and willfully bankrupt a system? This is thievery. This is theft. To take and take and take and give nothing back? To rage on the lawful citizens of the United States? To say, “you owe me” and to take and take and give nothing back? These are DECENT people? You want to defend them? Do you still want to defend these lawless and indecent thieves and takers? POverty is no excuse to be lawless. You need to more carefully and judiciously think through this issue because it is obvious from your remarks that you have not thought this through logically, lawfully, decently and fiscally.

These 15 million squatters in the United STates are jeopardizing the safety, security and stability of the entire country. Everyone on this website seems to understand that FACT but you. For example: The person who thought that Mexico was just chicken fights and human trafficking, this type of response has to be forcefully pulled out of someone because typically people reserve their true feelings on subjects until someone comes along and triggers that part of their brain.
Mexico is a war zone due to the war on drugs and the only way to stop it is to stop the war on drugs. Anytime something is outlawed a black market pops up to fill the demand. There is no way to stop demand by outlawing supply, this idea is ludicrous. The Mexicans that cross that border should be considered refugees under the Geneva Convention and given what I like to call a “Refugee Afloat” status. Have them register for an ID, have them pay their fair share of taxes, but can’t vote.
Beck and people following him attack Obama because he is supposedly trying to build a progressive Utopia but is it not Beck and his followers trying to build a conservative Utopia? What I want is a way to opt out of both Utopias. I don’t want to be a follower of either; I just want to live my life the way I want without becoming someone’s straw man.

Posted on January 17, 2013 at 5:26pmImmigration reform as a whole, as applies to all countries and all humans, in my opinion should be this. There should be none, every human on this planet should be considered an American citizen with the ability to travel to and from at will and the ability to work and to go to school without restrictions from an immigration policy. This country was great not because it targeted just the best and brightest of the world but because it targeted everyone with no exception. What the British thought were Irish trash tuned out to be American gold. When given the opportunity despite ones current education and social status anyone has the chance to make gold from trash. Simple answers for complicated problems tend to be the most successful.

Not a criminal invader. To follow the ideology set forth here would be suicide for a country that has already done more for others around the world than all other countries combined. And then no one is benefited and all is lost. I can’t be guilt tripped into doing the wrong thing, which is what these people are trying to do. Will I do all I can for another in need? Yes! Giving 15 million people automatic status and US citizenship is a GROSS MISCARRIAGE of Justice. It is INJUSTICE to just grant 15 million people citizenship while others are still waiting in line, have paid their fees, have submitted to criminal background checks, have taken medical exams to make sure they do NOT have anything catastrophic in the way of a medical issue that would bankrupt the local health community and every law abiding American should be up in arms about this and complain vehemently! I don’t know anyone who is unwelcoming to legal immigrants, however just as any other thief or burglar – those who steal into this country are not welcome and never should be.
The borders are the doors to our country and those who are to come in should be invited (legal immigration) not break in.
The same principle as to who is allowed in your home applies to how we should treat immigration

Shut down the border.
All illegals must register for a probationary green card within 2 years. After that, if you’re caught you’re deported to your home country. If you don’t tell us a country we drop you off in Chili.
The probationary green card will last 10 years. Then you can apply for citizenship. You break the law, you are deported.
Once you became a citizen you are not allowed to vote for another 10 years. This is so no political party can benefit from you sudden citizenship.

This overrun in illegals only undermines the principles of what legal immigrants are searching for ! ( A beautiful land based on laws ensuring life , liberty and the pursuit of happiness, FREEDOM ) ! Breaking the law by entering the country illegally , completely undermines the core principles of law and order ! Not a good start ! I see it, I want it, I take, legal or not!

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 4:36pmChristians have always helped other people voluntarily. I stress that word “voluntarily” because it is not mandated that above and beyond paying taxes the Government manipulate or coerce anyone to do anything more. Our taxes are supposed to provide for the “common good” and if they do not then we all have to take a long look at that. I would venture a guess with the 16 trillion dollar debt that “the common good” is out of control. You have to be able to afford the “common good” and if you cannot then you say like we used to in my household, “NO! We cannot afford it! We don’t have the money.” And then you don’t spend the money. I do not make very much money where I am at and neither does my husband BUT we are temporarily helping a refugee from AFrica to not be homeless. Yes! We are voluntarily and without any Government demands, manipulation, or coercion, helping a man to remain in his apartment through these long winter months, for about 3 months, we are paying his rent. It is difficult but we are doing it because we are Christians. He walked into the store where I was working asking for work. He did not beg for money. He wanted nothing for free. He just wanted to work and earn his way. This garnered respect and admiration from us. He knows the French language. He is earning his rent from us by giving us French lessons. It is called “bartering” or “trading”. Try it some time. Ask your grandparents. They lived this way for centuries.

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 1:57amFirst, it should be determined how many illegal aliens actually want to become Americans. it seems to me that many actually don’t want to. They refuse to learn/speak English, and send whatever money they make back to their Country of origin. They certainly don’t pay State or Federal income taxes, yet they they are given food stamps and section eight housing.
It seems to me that they are just taking advantage of us.

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 5:42amDianeTX,
You left out how much is spent educating “Illegals”, Anchor Babies, Child Tax Credits, etc.
What happened to the oath, “protect and defend the U.S. against all enemies, foreign, and domestic”?
These “Illegals” are enemies of our economy.
There was research done while Bush was pushing the Dream Act, and the researcher warned that if these people were put into “Legal Citizen” status, that it would bankrupt the U.S.
He stated that Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and other entitlements could not withstand the influx into the system, they would collapse.
It looks like Obama and his minions want that to happen.

“They refuse to learn/speak English, and send whatever money they make back to their Country of origin. They certainly don’t pay State or Federal income taxes, yet they they are given food stamps and section eight housing.”
A few points:
1. You don’t need to speak English to be a US citizen. We don’t have a national language.
2. There’s no law about spending your money that you earn in the US here.
3. Legal immigrants do pay state and federal income taxes – although depending on how much they make, they may have the taxes refunded at the end of the year (the same as US citizens do). Immigrants comprised 16.7 percent of the state income tax filers in 2009, for example. As for illegal immigrants, if they have a taxpayer identification number (which is required for any on-the-level job and for tax credits), they also pay income taxes. It is estimated that this applies to about 1/3 to 1/2 of illegals living in the US.
4. Illegal immigrants generally are not able to get food stamps or section 8 housing; if they have legal family members, then those families members may qualify (for example, if they have children who are legal citizens because they’re born in the US). In the case of food stamps, the stamps are ONLY to cover the legal individual. Legal immigrants obviously can apply for these benefits.

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 3:00pmBecause they are lazy. And afraid. If they spoke up they would get killed. Their own countries are full of lawless criminals and drug cartels and no one enforces the rules or laws in their own countries. So they grow up stealing and thieving in their own countries to get by. Then they come to the United STates with the same mindset of stealing, thieving and lawlessness. Poverty breeds contempt for the law. They think because they are poor and the United States is rich they will just steal from rich people because rich people are evil. My husband did missions in Mexico. The poor people down there think they are good, they are better, they are more moral, they are more spiritual and God approves of them MORE because they are poor. They think rich people are evil. Particularly riche WHite people are evil and that stealing from them is no big deal. They have all been taught LIberation Theology which is Christianized Marxism and I actually believe that they think they are OBEYING the LOrd by stealing from the rich or trying to overwhelm the system. One woman crossed the Rio Grande from Mexico into McClellan, TEXAS to have her baby in the United STates because she believed that “The Lord” allowed her to cross from Mexico into the United STates as a matter of His “will” for her without regard to the law of the land. This is their magical/Fantastical lawless thinking. If you can cross the river it is the Lord’s will for you. Bankrupt Christian Theology. Despicable.

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 1:22amI know too many folks who are living in shacks and rental trailers, no jobs, no cars, and living on food stamps. We need to take care of our fellow Americans first. America already has more people than we can take care of.
When every natural born legal American has a good paying job, nice home, dependable car, and the 16 Trillion dollar national debt is paid off, only then, will I welcome immigrants into the U.S.

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 1:05amLol I know a lot of those liberal peace love dove communists that call themselves evangelical Christians. Gotta watch the hypocrites. They are wolves in sheep’s clothing. The twist the words of the Bible around to fit their agenda/cause.
One thing I destest and can’t stand is a hypocrite. They say one thing and do another. I guess they all forget about what Jesus said about the law……about paying Roman taxes……..pay what is due to Caesar and pay what is due to God. Jesus didn’t say for them to break the law and not pay Caesar’s taxes. but then every hypocrite I’ve ever known and met, conveniently leave out parts of the Bible they don’t like and/or that doesn’t fit their agenda/belief system.
God has a very special place for all the hypocrites. It’s called hell. What’s really funny, is when you engage in a conversation with a hypocrite about God and the Bible, when you say or read something straqight out of the Bible (especially a statement God (Jesus) makes that is counter to what they wanna believe, the hypocrite gets all bent out of shape and wants to argue with you….they wnat to try to convince you differently. The demons can’t stand to hear the Word of God. I simply say to them “Get away from me Satan. That shuts them up and makes em walk away grumbling & angry. They know who their Boss really is.

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 3:43pmTo: Sinner Saint: I have recently begun to employ a tactic akin to your “Get Away from Me Satan” phrase. I have put up with and I mean, for too long, with too many of my Liberal/Democrat ranting and raving, pro abortion, pro homosexual marriage and everything else family, Margaret Sanger Disciples who of course, bow their head, pretending to be reverent, as we all gather for dinner or a lunch out for someone’s birthday. Once again, these same Liberal/Democrat family members voted Obama back in and helped pass Referendum 74 in Washington State legalizing gay marriage. Then they thought I would keep to “their” plans for coming to my house in which I would host a big Christmas Party for them, cook the food, give them each a cookie tray, and gifts and that life would just go on as it has in our family no matter what the vote. But, this year, when I realized that I was actually rewarding evil behavior, corrupt and wicked behavior, I decided to give them consequences for their evil behavior. I gave them “extraordinary chastisements” and they were totally enraged. They said how they voted was “none of my business” and I told them “how you voted caused the ruination of Christmas for thousands of American families and children.” Reap the consequences. No Christmas for you! They were pissed! I told them, “Renounce Satan and all his works! Then we can have a relationship.” I haven’t heard back. Next time they contact me it will be, “GEt thee behind SAtan!” Thanks for thi

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 4:17pmCatholic has come to be akin to Liberal. Pelosi, Biden, the Kennedy’s are all Catholic. Chris Matthews is Catholic. Catholic has also come to mean “Liberation Theology” as in “Christianized Marxism.” Catholic Theologians like Karl Rahner wrote the book on that. Mexico and other Central and South American countries are now firmly in the grip of Liberation Theology which is just Marxism. Catholicism in these countries is now Atheism no matter how you slice it. And, at one time Mexico had declared itself a Christian Country but they rescinded that and went back to the worship of their Toltec Gods/Goddesses. So they are now firmly ensconced in both Marxism and Paganism. Don’t bother referring to Mexico or any of these people as Christian anymore. Even the Evangelical Christians of the Assembly of God churches are Marxist in their thinking. They will cross the river in a heartbeat to “anchor” their babies and all according to the “Bible” and “God’s will.” Mexico is thoroughly corrupt and it is sad to see but those are the facts.

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 4:46pmYes. It is pitiful too that “pastors” and supposedly people with Bible Degrees would support lawlessness to the exclusion of everything else. But, I believe they have all been duped by Liberation Theology and perhaps White Guilt? Instead of burdening the citizenry of the United States through taxes and more “forced” giving through taxes, which is Obamacare and his agenda, it should be a no brainer to these pastors that it is THEIR MISSION to help the poor and voluntarily and they SHOULD be opening their churches, their big fat CHURCH wallets and giving voluntarily. They have HUGE churches and they should turn all their fat cat church halls and basements and gymnasiums into low income housing and walk their talk! But they won’t! They are all hypocrites! They essentially are saying, “Let taxes be laid more and more upon the American People but don’t let our buildings be touched or used for the poor.” Hypocrites! And Lazy!

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 4:08amDepends on whose law and what kind of law.
Jesus is noted for breaking all sorts of religious laws set up by legalistic church officials. Those were some of the charges put on him at his arrest.
While they were technically legal (though they interrupted the sanctity), the businesses in the temple, Jesus attacked their livelihood in rightous anger.
He was also supported “giving unto Caesar that which is Caesars”.
The question should be asked do we resist unjust laws, or do follow them because the ruler has the right to rule? I think we have the right to resist unjust laws.
Now immigration? I think it’s just for immigrants to come in through the proper channels. Illegals hurt those who try to come in legally just as much as they hurt citizens.
I notice many churches feel its their mission to help anyone who comes to the church, no matter the background. Many are willing to hand out food and clothing etc. this is probably ok, as long as the government isn’t in charge. It’s going to far however when a church demands the state enforce through taxes what should be limited to charity.
It seems many Churches support blanket amnesty under a naive belief of helping others… Or that they are resisting “unjust” laws… Insanity, really… Because its far more just for people to come in through legal means, proving that they want to be Americans, and offering a true beneficial contribution to society.
