As stronger sentiment concerning gun control mounts on the American streets, Glenn Beck invited renown historian and Wallbuilders founder David Barton on his Tuesday evening program to provide viewers with a comprehensive overview of the Second Amendment as a foundation for liberty and freedom.
Beck was compelled to provide this in-depth look after 19 potential executive actions were identified to move the Obama administration forward with new gun control measures. Those measures include but are not limited to: requiring mental health screenings of both the buyer and seller; banning military-style “assault” weapons and high-capacity magazines; issuing a statute prohibiting gun trafficking; and an “end” to the “hobbling of federal agencies.”
“This is not about preventing mass-murders it is about eliminating your right to bear arms,” Beck slammed. “This administration will never waste a good emergency.”
“Americans need to know where the Second Amendment even comes from…The history of our ‘why and how,’ and how it has shaped our foundation of freedom.”
A glance back in time
Barton, who has an extensive knowledge-base in American history, said that the Second Amendment is truly about a “certain set of principles.” He added that people should not separate the Second Amendment from other amendments, particularly the first five, as they are all aligned and part of one larger concept of protection of one’s self, religion and property. In other words ”unalienable rights.”
The Founding Fathers, according to Barton, believed that God gave these rights to mankind and that no government could take them away.
“That is why our government is different,” he explained, “other world governments trampled peoples rights… the idea was to prevent the government from ever trampling our rights.” He added that unlike any country in Europe, Americans insisted the government could not touch what God had given them.
The Founders also used the philosophy term “laws of nature and nature is God,” which Barton informed is contained in Blackstone’s commentary on the law. The idea is that certain things come to one from nature, such as the deep-seated biological mechanism of self-defense. The historian also noted that James Wilson, a signer of both the Constitution and Declaration of Independence noted that the law of nature is to defend oneself, and that — through the castle doctrine — a private citizen failing to defend his home or family — even with deadly force — would be considered negligence.
As the interview continued, Barton went on to explain how different the times were at America’s founding, and that citizens could even penalized for not carrying a gun. The topic then veered to the lawless days of the Wild West, its religious revival and the role of Texas Rangers in enforcing the law.
In addition, Barton addressed the founding of the NRA. While some like to demonize pro-Second Amendment group and even call it prejudiced, it turns out the powerful group was in fact started by two Union generals in 1871 as a means to driving out the Ku Klux Klan and ensuring that blacks, who although then-free were not allowed means with which to defend themselves — could in fact legally own a gun.
Barton also noted that even after the Whiskey and Shays rebellions, and even the assassinations of Lincoln Garfield and McKinley, calls for gun bans never came into play. In fact, the times even bolstered the Second Amendment.
It was not until the aftermath of Malcolm X, John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King’s assassination that then President Lyndon B. Johnson sought stricter gun control. Ironically, said Barton, President Reagan — although having survived an assassination attempt himself — was very much an adherent to the Second Amendment and opposed then assistant and White House Press Secretary Jim Brady’s bill.
Psychology professor Warren Throckmorton, a scholar who has challenged some of Barton’s facts in the past, took note of Barton’s assertion, however, revealing that Reagan actually favored the Brady bill. In an op-ed for the New York Times, Reagan wrote:
This level of violence must be stopped. Sarah and Jim Brady are working hard to do that, and I say more power to them. If the passage of the Brady bill were to result in a reduction of only 10 or 15 percent of those numbers (and it could be a good deal greater), it would be well worth making it the law of the land.
Reagan, while a proponent of the Second Amendment, had a more moderate view on gun control, revealing that people’s views on the issue, irrespective of political leaning, is as multi-layered as the types of legislations that have been brought to bear concerning the matter. For deeper insight into the Gipper’s views on gun control, please visit TheBlaze’s in-depth article here.
When asked how American citizens should react if government were to seek to claim their arms, Barton said that there is a host of lawyers working bro-bono to step in and help protect citizens’ gun rights.
This post has been updated with additional views on Reagan and the Brady Bill from Warren Throckmorton.

This is why a democratic gov’t will never work in these tribally/sectarian based areas. Total control works; just look at the history of these countries that lost their dictators or over threw them…Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, and on and on. Take the guy with the biggest stick away, and all hell breaks loose. Heck, look at tribal Africa for a similar situation, such as Rwanda. If you are not in the same tribe as your dictator, you are likely toast! Without a dictator, there are massacres everywhere between tribes until one becomes king of the hill.

Not sure who you’re talking to, but here’s an article from World magazine (a Christian periodical) talking about the Discovery Institute gathering 10 conservative Christian scholars to review Barton’s work, and their responses were overwhelmingly negative.
http://www.worldmag.com/2012/08/the_david_barton_controversy
It also refers to “Getting Jefferson Right” written by two conservative academics from the Christian Grove City College.
The article ends with:
“They (the Discovery Institute’s group of 10) largely agree with Barton’s belief that Christian principles played a major role in America’s founding, but Richards argues that Barton’s books and videos are full of “embarrassing factual errors, suspiciously selective quotes, and highly misleading claims.” “

It’s true. Barton is not a historian in any way. He is constantly being corrected by real historians (both conservative and not-so conservative) and his book has been dropped by its publisher (Thomas Nelson, the biggest Christian publisher in the country) because of these factual inaccuracies. Beck continues to have him on because they are friends and his view of history supports Beck’s opinions. Everything he says is suspect because of all the times he has been wrong. He is an activist, not a historian.

“There are those in America today who have come to depend absolutely on government for their security. And when government fails they seek to rectify that failure in the form of granting government more power. So, as government has failed to control crime and violence with the means given it by the Constitution, they seek to give it more power at the expense of the Constitution. But in doing so, in their willingness to give up their arms in the name of safety, they are really giving up their protection from what has always been the chief source of despotism government. Lord Acton said power corrupts. Surely then, if this is true, the more power we give the government the more corrupt it will become. And if we give it the power to confiscate our arms we also give up the ultimate means to combat that corrupt power. In doing so we can only assure that we will eventually be totally subject to it. When dictators come to power, the first thing they do is take away the people’s weapons. It makes it so much easier for the secret police to operate, it makes it so much easier to force the will of the ruler upon the rule.”

It may not change that day but the government would think twice before taking action against us. I always heard that the union army could hardly hit a ‘bull the a@@ with a banjo”, two generals were upset, so they founded the NRA to rectify the problem.
I did a bit of research and even on the NRA’s site it states: “Dismayed by the lack of marksmanship shown by their troops, Union veterans Col. William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate formed the National Rifle Association in 1871. The primary goal of the association would be to “promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis,” according to a magazine editorial written by Church. ”

Jan. 16, 2013 at 10:27amI think both ways is what the government wants…
If we don’t resist, there is no public protests, they’ll claim “this is what the people want. taking away guns is the will of the people.” If people do protest, the media will just portray them as insane gun nuts, and might even send in troops to bully and arrest them.
Those who turn themselves in will go straight to prison, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Where the media will be complient, and ignore. People will just ‘disappear’. They won’t receive an attorney, and no one will know they are missing. The media will just turn the public eye to the next teen idol, or other shallow news events.
If people do resist, they’ll claim they are crazy and bring in the UN, EU, NATO, and PMC troops to kill all who “resist”. The media will portray those who are resisting as insane, violent killers, and treasonous and seditious forces. This is exactly what they want, as its the easiest path to ‘clamp down’ and institute martial law, and remove even more rights.
I’m not sure there is a “correct path”, in which the government already doesn’t have contigency plan set in place, and propaganda machine to make their side seem like it common sense path, to braindead masses…

It won’t happen – they do not exist.
Glenn actually showed the “chapter and verse” of the infamous 1866 gun control law once – turns out it was passed by a Radical Republican Reconstructionist legislature. Barton had it up on his website too, but disabled and erased comments related to the article – because it was being torn to shreds with exact “citiation” of fact rather than his pure revisionist assertion on the matter.
So, to answer Glenn’s question, “Why doesn’t the NRA use this story?” Simple, they know it does not factually exist as Barton tells it.

His research is shoddy, and he’s been caught numerous times getting the facts to fit his agenda. This saddens me especially since David Barton and I share the same religious and political beliefs.

I have been going over that too, and honestly in the neighborhood I live in, i can’t see my neighbors standing with me.. one didn’t even understand why i needed a gun.. so I am moving to a state/area with like minded people. In addition, CIVIL you are right, that is why they have the FEMA camps, because they know the prisons will fill very quickly, and I would not trust any lawyer to get me out.. they too can be pressured/swayed, there not many principled people any longer. Which is why I agree with your name… and BTW, God keeps leaving me these little “breadcrumbs” to move..

Jan. 16, 2013 at 8:46amExcellent show yesterday. Understanding the historical context of the 2nd Ammendment truly was enlightening! I especially enjoyed the parts where NOT carrying a gun was against the law. How far we’ve come.
To that extent, I’m thankful we live in a peaceful nation to where openly carrying a gun is not the norm. Should it be? I do not know though I am absolutely for concealed carry permits.
We need to address the balance between what weapons the civilian population should have access to and whom should be allowed to carry those weapons with the understanding you cannot stop someone whose nuts from commiting a crime, be it using a gun or by some other means such as a truck full of fertilizer.
In all of this, the rights of the law-abiding citizen needs to be upheld. This means we must support the right of people who speak out against firearms to do so though we can absolutely disagree with their philosophy. It is a shame they will not do the same for us.

Jan. 16, 2013 at 8:35amUgh… come on Beck. You realize that Barton’s become a laughing stock even among conservative historians, right? His “Jefferson Lies” was so inaccurate that Thomas Nelson, the largest Christian publishing firm in the world, withdrew the book from publication and stopped production. The Blaze had, what, 3 articles trying to “clear the air” for Barton? Do we really need more pro-Barton propaganda like these quotes:
“Glenn Beck invited renown (sic) historian and Wallbuilders founder David Barton”
“Barton, whose knowledge-base in American history is by many considered second to none”
?
… when I read those lines, I just rolled my eyes and thought “This sounds more like flirting than an actual informative piece.” Invite some actual historians on to discuss these important issues, not discredited and disgraced folks just because you’ve got a financial stake in them.

“Try learning REAL History. Not the Revisionist Crap ”
Barton’s stuff -is- “revisionist crap.” For years the left said that Barton was lying, and the right supported him precisely because the left hated him and controversy sells… but with his latest book, even the right stepped back and went “Whoa, ok, no, this guy is actually lying.”
Historians, conservative and liberal alike, think Barton is “revisionist crap.” The only reason he’s popular is because they’re sweet lies. But even sweet lies are still lies.
@4truth2all
Serious about what? That Barton is a disgraced and discredited faux-historian? Sure I am. As much as I’d love history to be the white-washed version that Barton presents (especially as he plays up Christianity and its effect on our country), it’s simply not true. And with Christ as my guide, I think lying is morally wrong (even when it sounds nice) – and thus I cannot see how any other Christian would support Barton.
Well, except when profit is involved, which is why I think Beck keeps him coming back again and again.

“”Well ” with Christ as my guide” I know how my enemy lies and deceives to make the truth appear as a lie.”
Obviously this is true. And it’s exactly what Barton does: lies and deceives. The only reason he has a receptive audience is because they like his lies.
“MAYBE he did make a mistake .. does that now discredit the truths that he does speak?… Does 1% incorrect negate the 99% that is ?”"
If it was a mistake? No. If he intentionally is editting history to support an agenda? A stopped clock is right twice a day – does that mean you should set your watch by it? If
“Just because another “expert” says you are wrong are you now wrong?”
No, whether your facts are right or wrong determines it. When others can point out, say, that Barton uses quotes that are not in fact attributed to the people he says said them, or that he takes actual quotes and selectively trims them and applies them to religious contexts instead of their original ones… then that person is wrong.
“you play right into the same hands … is this the leading of Christ?”
Are… are you saying that lying is the “Christian” thing to do so long as it doesn’t align with non-Christians? That it’s better to ignore the truth than take a position that happens to be held by others you disagree with most of the time?
As said: stopped clock. I don’t think yoursensei is a good historian either. He has his own reasons for being anti-Barton; I’ve said mine.

I Agree with you on some points about David Barton.
I have read his books (some not all)
Much of what He Writes is Backed up by Other Historical Authors.
Where I tend disagree with Barton is that the Founders wanted Religion
to Influence Government .
They Neither Wanted a Gov.controled Religion (Church of England)
nor a Gov.Devoid of Religious Principles (Atheists).
In other words a Nation Lead by Men or Women of high Morals
an Principles.(not much of that in Washington DC Today)
In my research an reading of History the Amazing thing
I’ve found is the Battle for BIG Fed Government vs Small Fed.Gov.
has been going on since Washington Left Office.
John Adams was a BIG Federal Government President.
an Thomas Jefferson was SMALL Federal Government President.
It’s been going on for 200 + years they just change the Names
every so often.
But on the Subject of the 2nd Amendment. The Founders understood
that if a Tyranny should arise an Armed Citizenry would be the best Defense.
Other Nations sometimes do it with a Military Coup which Generally Doesn’t
End Well. In fact that how most Dictator’s are put in Power.

If he purposely lies because of his “agenda” you would have to “know” his heart otherwise it would seem to be the judging which a Christ lead person is told not to do.
If there is a PROVEN track record of mistakes or misapplications, then I would be in agreement that one should be careful about the information given, but I find the mans clock ticking and not in need of throwing in the trash…good day

“If there is a PROVEN track record of mistakes or misapplications, then I would be in agreement that one should be careful about the information given…”
So our options with Barton are that he’s either a lying and peddling an agenda, or he’s an inept fake historian with a history (heh, pun) of getting things wrong? Why wouldn’t you start to question his work?
Technically I think that it’s a mixture of both of these things. He botches factual information that he should have researched properly because he’s not a trainer historian, but he also keeps or discards what he thinks is relevant to advance his own version of history. Thomas Nelson, his old publisher, said the same thing when they pulled his book.

Jan. 16, 2013 at 8:27amAs I read the 2nd amendment , it states that the right to bear arms is there to allow the people to prevent another monarch ( i.e. Obama ) from taking rights away from the people. Since the government has no restrictions on the type of weapons which it can use against the people , there must be no restrictions on the type of weapons the people can have.

Why … for the most part … are Republican representatives silent regarding the gun control issue. Do Conservatives have no representation to speak on behalf of the Constitution … on behalf of Conservative issues.. There is an expression “They did not go down without a good fight” but there is no fight. The white flag appears to have been waved prior to any battle.
I can only assume that “We the People” are the only voices attempting to be heard on behalf of the Constitution … on Conservative issues. I pray that Saturday’s gun control protests will be successful.

Jan. 16, 2013 at 8:17amBarton has it locked down on this issue just like every other issue he speaks about. The Founding Fathers, according to Barton, believed that God gave these rights to mankind and that no government could take them away. That pretty much sums it up regarding the second amendment because our founders knew that government would eventually strip our rights away if given enough time. It’s the same with all our rights, government has put restrictions on all of them, permits, fees etc. They’re doing the slow death of the second amendment with restrictions permits and thousands of ‘gun laws’ all of which are unconstitutional and designed to infringe on our right to bear arms. Someday the government will resort to confiscation of this I have no doubt, when it happens is anybody’s guess.

Sadly, in the current climate, a historian who has been ‘discredited’ is likely more accurate than those presently imagining a past where founders were non believers and presidents were closet homosexuals and were intent on ending wars they started.
History is at risk, the ‘tell the lie until its believed as true’ approach of the Left refined to the ultimate degree…
