Southwestern Pennsylvania Hospital Will Stop Delivering Babies Partly Due to Obamacare

WINDBER, Pa. (TheBlaze/AP) — A southwestern Pennsylvania hospital will stop delivering babies after March 31 because its obstetricians are either leaving or refocusing their practices, and because hospital officials believe they can’t afford it based on projected reimbursements under looming federal health care reforms.

The Windber Medical Center, about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, is losing two obstetricians and two others are shifting their focus more to gynecology.

Hospital officials say the population of women of child-bearing age is dropping and that the number of births the hospital would be called upon to perform isn’t enough for it to provide the service in the face of lower reimbursements under the federal Affordable Care Act. The hospital posted a lengthy statement to its website on Wednesday.

“We understand this change will be difficult for some of our dedicated employees and are working closely with the Human Resources Department to provide assistance as able throughout the transition and beyond to place them in other areas where there are opportunities due to openings and / or growth within the facility,” the statement reads.

The hospital delivered about 200 babies each year since restarting its obstetrics program in 2005.

Officials aren’t sure how many jobs will be lost.

Get use to it. Places are going to be closing all over this country because of the lousy health care bill the dorks on the left shoved down our throats. Do you thiunk Obama gives a rats but about any of it? Hell no, and niether do the dorks in congress since they don’t have to deal with Obama care like we all do. Everyone better sharpen their first aid skills. i think most of us will be without a doctor soon.

If you look up the Windber community, you will see a decreasing population and a mean age of 42. The hospital caters to the demographics. If you research the trends, you will see that many small hospitals have closed their birthing centers over the last couple of decades. It is cost prohibitive when their aren’t enough deliveries to cover the cost much of which is in the increased insurance cost to hospitals that deliver babies. Many small hospitals will see days pass in which their nurseries are empty and yet they must keep the personnel on hand in the event a laboring mother presents.

  Several years ago, I heard about how many hospitals in Michigan have been closing down their OB departments because they loose money every time a patient walks through the door due to low Medicaid reimbursements. I suspect we’ll be seeing this a lot more.

Our government can’t run a lemonade stand without massive fraud. Ocare will be no different .
The first thing they will have to deal with is cost cutting since the whole program is underfunded .
That means reducing the number of chronically ill,mentally ill and elderly which are long term-high cost individuals.
Then they will set up health reviews for everyone to reduce costs of common diseases – diabetes ,COPD,addictions,obesity. So diets,smoking,drinking,sweets etc will be taxed more,you’ll be limited on their consumption or fined for excessive consumption. Pregnancies will be limited to certain age ranges and fetuses with abnormalities will be “discouraged “.

  In the health care bll (which I read over half of), government is slated to take over ALL long term care facilities – that’s nursing homes. Hope Americans are willing to take in their elderly parents.

Let me get this straight………….The guberment will pay for abortions…strike that, the guberment will use tax payers money to fund the murder of babies, but limits it’s funding to actually give birth to children.

Accident————– I Think NOT

More children die due to guberment in a day, than all other child deaths in a year.

Time to ban guberment as they are a danger to our kids.

Remember the ” Affordable ” Housing Act ? Remember what it did to the economy ? Guess how the Affordable Health Act will affect the economy ?! They used to raise taxes(tax and spend) to pay for them; but for several years now, they have decided to have their Counterfeiter-in-Chief Ben Bernanke pay for it. They were salivating over the oppurtunities he would afford them 10 years ago, when he made that famous helicopter speech. He is facilitating the Dem’s theft of our money (purchasing power). Oh, it won’t matter! We’re shy of about 50,000 or so docs not counting those moving to Canada every day. So what if the price of med school is skyrocketing and fewer enrollments will drive the prices higher. This is OBAMAcare people! That’s all that matters…
