Chicago Official Wants GPS Tracking Devices Required on All Guns: ‘Safety Is…a Much More Important Issue Than Privacy’

Chicago Official Wants GPS Tracking Devices Required on All Guns

Credit: AP

A Chicago alderman is asking City Council to hold hearings on a controversial gun control proposal that would require GPS tracking of all firearms, CBS Chicago reports.

Ald. Willie Cochran, of the 20th District, wants GPS chips implanted in all new guns, as well as retrofitted on existing firearms, so police can locate them if they go missing. Cochran is also a former police officer.

“Just like if your car gets stolen,” he explained, “OnStar can tell you where your car is. If your gun gets stolen, and you report it, we should be able to find that gun.”

As far as responsible gun owners’ right to privacy, Cochran isn’t really concerned about that.

“[S]afety is…a much more important issue than privacy,” he said.

“It is extremely important that we look past this privacy issue, at this point, and understand how important it is for us to address the issue of safety,” Cochran added.

More from CBS Chicago:

Cochran has introduced a resolution asking the Committee on Public Safety to hold hearings to receive testimony on the matter. A Massachusetts state senator from Boston has been pushing a similar measure in that state.

Cochran acknowledged it might be expensive to install GPS chips on current and future firearms, but not as expensive as the cost of gun violence to society.

“Let’s measure what it costs in hospital costs, lost wages, deaths,” he said.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel did not comment on the GPS proposal. However, Emanuel has vowed to push for even stricter gun laws than Chicago already has.

Want to see a liberals go speechless on gun control? Ask these questions.

Do you know that blacks make up 12.5% of the population, but do ½ of the nation’s murders?

Do you know that by lowering black murder rates to the same as whites, we would lower the national murder per capita rate by 40%, we would also have a murder rate as low as the lowest nations in Europe, and we would save thousands of black lives?

Would you like to save black lives? What do you suggest we do to lower black murder rates?

Do you know that 70% of our murders in the US are gang related? Other than having his DOJ give “assault weapons” to Mexican drug gangs, what is Obama doing to combat gang violence?

Do you know that that our violent crimes are intrinsically tied to liberal welfare programs? Do you suggest we start phasing out these programs, being they have not succeeded in lowing poverty rates, but have instead raised it.

Do you realize that for three decades, MTV has continuously portrayed the black man as a thuggish brute that has bitches and hoes, walks around adorned in gaudy gold jewelry, wearing clownish clothes three times to big, is a gangster, and has contributed to blacks glorifying a criminal lifestyle?

I will bet ENCINOM, PubliusPencil, Glennda, SendtheMeteors…… will not be able to answer my questions above, nor will they even want to admit to the truth of those statistics

Criminality is not genetic, nor has it ever been.

Skin color is benign and non-behavioral. People do not commit crimes because of the color of thier skin.

What we do know, is that democrat programs, welfare, multicultural education, MTV, violent rap….. have all contributed to a serious problem of violence and murder within the black communities in the US.

Because of the liberal mandated laws of political correctness, no one is supposed to speak of these facts, nor do liberals want anyone to try to solve these problems. It detracts from their agenda

Notice that over 500 people (mostly black) were murdered in Chicago, this year alone. The mass majority were killed via cheap or stolen hand guns. Less that 3% were killed with a rifle of any type, but Obama and the libs are clamoring for banning rifles. What does that tell us? It would seem to me that libs believe that rich white kids from Connecticut matter, but blacks from the South Side of Chicago do not, otherwise, Obama and crowd would be talking lowering murder rates, and not outlawing the least used weapon in crimes.

Contrary to popular belief, most AR owners, use them for sport. we shoot national match at Camp Perry, do 3-gun, Varmint shoots, and NRA high-power matches. They are to expensive for criminals

      @Freedom

Your comment “G.O.P = Guns Over People”‘

Can you pontificate on this, and back it up, or is it just a foolish talking point?

I would argue that Democrats = agenda over people.

Of Obama’s 23 edicts on gun control, not one would have stopped the gun violence that happened at Sandy Hook.

Obama and the libs refuse to even recognize black on black violence in America. How can they ignore the fact that blacks are 12% of the pop and do half the murders?

Why is it the want to take rifles from law abiding citizens, when they know rifles are seldom ever used in crimes? More people were killed with knives last year, than with rifles. We had over 6000 murders iwth hand guns, and less that 350 with rifles? Show me the logic there.

The majority of ARs are in the thousand dollar range. They are expensive, very seldoom ever used in crimes, but Obama wants them. Why?

Obama and dems claim that ARs are not used for hunting or sport. This is absurd. The most used rifle in the National Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio is the AR. It is also used in IDPA 3-gun matches, and a variety of other marksmanship events.

Dems are not looking to lower murder per capita rates. they are only looking to take away our constitutional freedoms

We are getting less and less of the lib trolls trying to chime in on the gun control debate topics on the blaze.

Reason being, is that they keep getting their butts handed to them in debate. The facts are just not on their side. They are seeing the reality that they actually do their side of the argument more harm than good. Every time they spout their talking points, conservatives come back with crime statistics, history, knowledge of the constitution, and facts concerning gun control in other nations. Libs are learning to just keep their mouths shut, and to go back and hang out on the huff po with their own types.

      FACTS:

In America, we own 88 guns per 100 people, but there are 27 nations with higher murder per capita rates. Honduras owns 6.6 guns per 100, yet has the highest murder per capita rates in the world.

Cities in the US with highest murder rates (Like Chicago, Detroit, DC..) have the strictest gun control laws.

Nations like the UK that have banned handguns see a steep incline in gun violence and murder rates. Getting rid of gun makes criminals bolder and more aggressive.

Socialist and communist throughout world history (Stalin, Mao, Castro, Hitler….) have always taken away guns from citizens. Then are the same dictators that in turn, murder millions of their own.

Gun control is not about guns, it is about control.

Slaves are not allowed to own guns for a reason.

Why? Because Chicago leads the country in violent crime and has the strictest gun regulations for starters. Obviously more of their great ideas are needed to make that number go up. Secondly, this law will do nothing to prevent thefts, or in any way shape or form help recovery those guns that are stolen. Think about how expensive and difficult it would be to add a GPS to a firearm for a second. Now think how easy it would be to deactivate one, as in destroy it. This will end up being more costly and more infective than New York’s Combined Ballistic Identification System. Google that and see what happens when dumb liberals pass feel good laws and the tax payers end up suffering! Not a single crime was solved!

You are exactly right on the removal of the RFiD tracking (gps) tags. The many arrests from Bush’s “Linebacker” operation tipped the Mexican gangs off that something was up and they found and removed the tags from the weapons. “Linebacker’ was then cancelled. The Obama administration started “Fast & Furious” without the tags, which makes no since unless you plan to create a crisis to attack gun ownership. Tag guns legally owned by Americans after giving untagged guns to Mexican gangs? These Chicago leftists are a clear threat to own freedom.

Given the Stark Naked FACT what we are REALLY talking about is an infringement/abridgement/abrogation of our GOD ENDOWED UNALIENABLE RIGHTS, does anyone find Glenn’s Jesus/Gandhi Non-violence shtick a Cognitive Dissonance of Clinical Denial proportions?
Is anyone buying his premise of The Founders’ “long suffering patience” with such attempted abrogations of THEIR Sacred Liberties?

Between The Sugar and Currency Acts (1764), the Stamp Act (65) which provoked street violence, etc and the Killing Fields at Lexington and Concord was a barely a decade. We’ve been being Victimized by the Tyranny of DC, enabled by our Fellow Dumbcits, since TEDDY and WILSON! A CENTURY of “long suffering”!

“Patience” as an EXCUSE for Moral and Intellectual COWARDICE?

Washington, upon receiving the news of Lexington and Concord at Mt. Vernon, wrote to a friend: “The once-happy and peaceful plains of America are either to be drenched in blood or inhabited by slaves. Sad alternative, but can a virtuous man hesitate in his choice?”

Apparently Glenn believes Hesitation, in this case a CENTURY of it, IS Virtuous.

Somebody got shot in Chicago today. Since Illinois has such strict gun laws, the shooter must have been from somewhere else. Right?

Here is the research that Jimmy Carter gave a grant to the University of Massachusetts to study gun control, there was only one problem, and their findings were that “Gun control laws do not reduce crime.”

That was the Carter administration, this is the Obama administration. I know there are similarities but this is a totally different animal. This one seems to have a way of magically changing numbers and outcomes.

It’s called a toolbox, choose what you need, find a convenient place to put the GPS device. Just make sure you can reattach them if the inspector comes by.

Chicago is obviously too dumb to understand that Germany exists. (If you have to ask, then you might as well sign on to “gun control” bans)

Well guess which component is coming out of the gun as soon as I buy it.
