A Chicago alderman is asking City Council to hold hearings on a controversial gun control proposal that would require GPS tracking of all firearms, CBS Chicago reports.
Ald. Willie Cochran, of the 20th District, wants GPS chips implanted in all new guns, as well as retrofitted on existing firearms, so police can locate them if they go missing. Cochran is also a former police officer.
“Just like if your car gets stolen,” he explained, “OnStar can tell you where your car is. If your gun gets stolen, and you report it, we should be able to find that gun.”
As far as responsible gun owners’ right to privacy, Cochran isn’t really concerned about that.
“[S]afety is…a much more important issue than privacy,” he said.
“It is extremely important that we look past this privacy issue, at this point, and understand how important it is for us to address the issue of safety,” Cochran added.
More from CBS Chicago:
Cochran has introduced a resolution asking the Committee on Public Safety to hold hearings to receive testimony on the matter. A Massachusetts state senator from Boston has been pushing a similar measure in that state.
Cochran acknowledged it might be expensive to install GPS chips on current and future firearms, but not as expensive as the cost of gun violence to society.
“Let’s measure what it costs in hospital costs, lost wages, deaths,” he said.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel did not comment on the GPS proposal. However, Emanuel has vowed to push for even stricter gun laws than Chicago already has.

Jan. 18, 2013 at 12:17amWhat a wonderful idea. A gun with GPS receiver/transmitter would look like a large frog with a wort on his ass. Crooks are not insane and they will not take a weapon with GPS. Willie Cochan and Piers Morgan hookup because they know how to solve all the gun problems. These people are not always correct, or truthful about a large amount of gun information they spit out of their mouths. These bull ******** think they are wise-men with all the answers about guns.

Jan. 17, 2013 at 11:55pmThe alderman just needs to stay in his district and tell everyone, all day long, every day, they have got to stop killing each other.
I guess that’s just to hard to do. He does love them so.

Jan. 17, 2013 at 11:48pmOh, yes that is a great idea. After all putting GPS chips in the “Fast and Furious” guns worked so well. All the people in Mexico did was let the batteries die and the GPS chips were useless. I am sure the criminals in Chicago will keep the batteries charged in their guns and not let the chips become useless. Will there ever be a time when Liberals actually use their God given brains?

Jan. 17, 2013 at 11:39pmPut ankle bracelets on the criminals . Leave them in jail. And don’t let some liberal let them back out on the street. Remember new York. A released killer back on the street. How is it we don’t hear any liberals commenting on that. Obama didn’t ask their kids for letters. Nothing political for him in it.

Jan. 17, 2013 at 11:24pmNo there is not a flag on Mars. No a chip is not locatable by GPS as described. Your car is locatable by GPS because that little back “shark fin” on the roof is like a cell phone, it is capable of sending a signal strong enough that it can reach the nearest cell phone tower.
It would be dangerous (impairing function) and an infringement on the rights of people to bear arms to install such tracking technology on fire arms. Adding as litte as a few grams of material to a weapon can lead to it being out of balance, or inhibiting the ability of the wearer to quick draw, and I can imagine quite a few gun smiths could explain why that matters if you ask them.
Continued discussion about fire arms only raises anxiety in the public awareness, which is not what we need after a national tragedy? Criminals in New York have already discovered, the only people that need guns are those that have something worth stealing, as news reports are discussion victims who have had their houses broken into after their names were published in a newspaper?
Police officers already account for the facts that they never know if someone is armed or not, continued discussions about this matter only infringes on the civil rights of law abiding citizens, who have the greater responsibility of teaching the community about life itself? The only people that have a constant fear of fire arms, are those who are criminals and are breaking the law?

Jan. 17, 2013 at 11:24pmPut GPS or ankle bracelets on the criminals, it’s a lot easier and cheaper. Then keep the idiots in jail, don’t let some liberal let them back out the street. With lame excuse of parenting, bad attitude etc… Just ask the firemen families that were killed by a released murderer. How much tragedy, hurt and pain all caused by liberals thinking they know what’s best for the rest of us. You can’t cure pedophiles, murderers, thieves etc… by using hand holding and coddling the perps.

Jan. 17, 2013 at 11:23pmIf a gun can be “retrofitted” to include a GPS tracker, a criminal can just as easily “un”-retrofit the gun. So, yet again, this is a way to track law abiding citizens that won’t track the intended targets.

Will it get you shot by a policeman if you happen to be where a shooting occurred? Quite possibly
Will it notify the police you are a person to be harassed? Most likely
Will it be an all clear signal that you are not home, so rob the place? Ya bet’ch
Will it stop a crime? Absolutely not
