CHICAGO (TheBlaze/AP) — He did it. He finally admitted it. Lance Armstrong doped.
He was light on the details and didn’t name names. He mused that he might not have been caught if not for his comeback in 2009. And he was certain his “fate was sealed” when longtime friend, training partner and trusted lieutenant George Hincapie, who was along for the ride on all seven of Armstrong’s Tour de France wins, was forced to give him up to anti-doping authorities.
But right from the start and more than two dozen times during the first of a two-part interview Thursday night with Oprah Winfrey, the disgraced former cycling champion acknowledged what he had lied about repeatedly for years, and what had been one of the worst-kept secrets for the better part of a week: He was the ringleader of an elaborate doping scheme on a U.S. Postal Service team that swept him to the top of the podium at the Tour de France time after time.
“At the time it did not feel wrong?” Winfrey asked.
“No,” Armstrong replied. “Scary.”
“Did you feel bad about it?” she pressed him.
“No,” he said. “Even scarier.”
“Did you feel in any way that you were cheating?”
“No,” Armstrong paused. “Scariest.”
“I went and looked up the definition of cheat,” he added a moment later. “And the definition is to gain an advantage on a rival or foe. I didn’t view it that way. I viewed it as a level playing field.”
“I lost myself in all that,” Armstrong added.

AUSTIN, TX – JANUARY 14: In this handout photo provided by the Oprah Winfrey Network, Oprah Winfrey (not pictured) speaks with Lance Armstrong during an interview regarding the controversy surrounding his cycling career January 14, 2013 in Austin, Texas. Oprah Winfrey’s exclusive no-holds-barred interview with Lance Armstrong, ‘Oprah and Lance Armstrong: The Worldwide Exclusive,’ has expanded to air as a two-night event on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. The special episode of ‘Oprah’s Next Chapter’ will air Thursday, January 17 from 9-10:30 p.m. ET/PT (as previously announced) and Friday, January 18 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The interview will be simultaneously streamed LIVE worldwide both nights on Oprah.com. Credit: Getty Images
Whether his televised confession will help or hurt Armstrong’s bruised reputation and his already-tenuous defense in at least two pending lawsuits, and possibly a third, remains to be seen. Either way, a story that seemed too good to be true – cancer survivor returns to win one of sport’s most grueling events seven times in a row – was revealed to be just that.
Winfrey got right to the point, asking for yes-or-no answers to five questions.
Did Armstrong use banned substances? “Yes.”
Did he use EPO? “Yes.”
Did he do blood doping and transfusions? “Yes.”
Did he use testosterone, cortisone and human growth hormone? “Yes.”
Did he do it in all seven of his Tour wins? “Yes.”
Along the way, Armstrong cast aside teammates who questioned his tactics, yet swore he raced clean and tried to silence anyone who said otherwise. Ruthless and rich enough to settle any score, no place seemed beyond his reach – courtrooms, the court of public opinion, even along the roads of his sport’s most prestigious race.
That relentless pursuit was one of the things that Armstrong said he regretted most.
“It’s a major flaw, and it’s a guy who expected to get whatever he wanted and to control every outcome. And it’s inexcusable. And when I say there are people who will hear this and never forgive me, I understand that. I do.”

Jan. 18, 2013 at 8:23amI got news for Lance
Oprah may think of herself as a God, but she is not one. There is not forgiveness in confessions to Oprah.
If Lance (while on Oprah) were to swear support for abortion and gun control, the left wing medai will welcome him back to the fold with open arms, it will do nothing for him in the long run.

Jan. 18, 2013 at 5:40amI remember a few weeks ago when Pat and Stu were saying they didn’t care if athletes took drugs that made them, and therefore the game, better.
Funny how hypocritical it is… finding it unacceptable for you to take drugs for your own amusement, yet fine for theirs.
Also funny how everyone finds drugs like alcohol fine, despite the fact that it’s one of the most dangerous… and, I mean… look at how American conservatives reacted to prohibition.
Hypocrisy is just a part of life, I guess. I know we’re all guilty of it.

Jan. 17, 2013 at 11:52pmAs far as I’m concerned, what Armstrong did was not wrong. The problem is that folks believe that drugs taken to aid one in sports are fundamentally worse than say a drug taken to lower blood pressure. As long as the aim is to preserve body life, it’s OK to take a drug. If, however, the drug is taken to expand one’s ability to think or to use one’s muscles in a sport, then it’s evil. To me, that is a kind of puritanism, the same kind that says too many sweets in a soda or eating a Big Mac if you’re overweight is evil. You enjoy it, so there must be something wrong.

Jan. 18, 2013 at 5:27amMike, your an idiot. What your saying to all the young people is that if you want to win at any sport you have to take drugs. Do you know what effect that will have, why should a young person have no choice but to take drugs if they want to compete, when by doing so they might be cutting there life short or giving themselve some terrible disease.

Jan. 17, 2013 at 10:39pmHope all those that have suffered financial harm and other losses because of his lying, cheating, self serving behavior win their suits. Rather see him poor and sorry rather than rich and sorry. And I would pose that anything he makes coming out of the criminal closet also means that any profits will not be his. A disgustingly disappointing human. Probably caused his own testicular cancer with the hormones as well, and do hope is an informational warning to others about the physical risks of doping and taking hormones.

Oprah: “So Barry, were you really a Marxist Radical all that time…?”
Barry: “Yes.”
Oprah: “Did you really intend to collapse the US economy and pave the way for a global New World Order…”
Barry: “Yes.”
Oprah: “Do you see yourself learning to enjoy prison life…?”
Barry: “Yes…Especially once I get used to the name Bernice…”
