Savannah White is only 4-years-old, a little young to be given the designation “metal mouth” since braces are still several years in her future and all her adult teeth have yet to come in. But after a trip to the dentist office to fill what mom though was a few cavities, a full set of silver capped teeth is what she was left with.

“I didn’t expect for her entire mouth to be covered in silver,” Savannah’s mom Alecia White said, according to AZ Family. “We went in to have a couple of cavities done and she came out with a mouth full of silver.”
White said the 4-year-old was self-conscious of her appearance afterward.
“On a daily basis she says, ‘Mommy, I don’t like my teeth. I don’t like my teeth,’” White said. “And it’s really kind of hard to hear every single day.”

Watch this report regarding the incident:
AZ Family asked a separate pediatric dentist to review Savannah’s case. Dr. Richard Chaet said putting crowns on all her teeth appears to have been merited given the level of deterioration and potential for further problems.
One commenter on this story explained that Savannah likely had a pulpotomy, which is when infected dental nerve tissue is removed and replaced with dental cement and capped with a stainless steel crown to ultimately save the tooth. The commenter bringing up pulpotomy as the medical procedure the child probably had called it the “child-sized version of a root canal.”
Chaet noted the communication between the mother and the dentist should have been better to prevent the shock afterward.
Watch AZ Family’s report:
Chaet also noted that given the number of crowns that were needed, most dentists would have used white veneers instead of stainless steel.

After a local dentist heard of Savannah’s story, he volunteered to put new caps on the child free of charge.
Some commenters on the story though have pointed out the issue of the girl’s teeth becoming so deteriorated that such measures were necessary in the first place.
One commenter on Medical Daily wrote, “It’s obvious this child teeth are terribly neglected and several either rotted out or were pulled out? Then [you] gripe because they cap the rest?”
Others on AZ Family’s main story wrote things like:
- Maybe the mom should brush her kids teeth…. – David Vanicelli
- Sounds to me like the parents were letting the child eat the wrong foods and were not cleaning her teeth. – Paula Griffiths
- [A] child that young shouldn’t have teeth that bad without a serious level of neglect. – Bhig Bhad Wolf

Jan. 17, 2013 at 1:20pmThis is the kind of treatment poor kids , foster kids get on the Medicaid system. And a majority of the parents are neglectful of their children’s teeth also. Braces are not covered at all under Medicaid. Some lucky ones get grants from generous people though.

Jan. 17, 2013 at 1:15pmThe bad is that no child should end up with rotten teeth so early in life. There is no excuse for poor dental care. Jesus, drive to the corner pharmacy and there is a whole half an aisle FULL of anything you need!
The other bad is that idiot dentist could have easily used porcelain instead of stainless. Makes me wonder if it wasn’t somehow a deliberate act of sabotage. It absolutely does happen, in ways you can’t imagine. This guy’s work is shocking, and probably the most traumatic thing you could do to a little girl’s appearance.
The good is, maybe this child will be so traumatized and embarrassed by this experience that it will motivate her to take good care of her adult teeth.
It really is something that takes hold very early in life.
Again with the parenting.

Jan. 17, 2013 at 1:14pmThose comments that were posted in the article are obviously from people who are not aware that proper hygiene only goes so far. My wife brushes my 5 yr olds teeth every morning and night (he does it himself now) since he got his first tooth and he still had to get caps. He doesn’t eat a copious amount of junk foods and soda isn’t found in our house (the occasional one at a restaurant) but still ended up getting caps…our story was surprisingly similar to this little girls. My wife was told that on the next scheduled visit they would put in “a few” caps in the back. She took him in and got caps on every tooth but the front 4 on top and bottom. I had never seen my wife so livid. It’s one thing if the Dentist tells you that ‘hey, your kids teeth are jacked and needs capping all around,’ but it is NEVER acceptable to either not tell the parent or describe the procedure dramatically less than what it is.

Jan. 17, 2013 at 1:09pmCould be a case of ‘Medicaid Mouth’. A dentist near here was fined a couple million dollars, a few yrs, ago, for doing these procedures unneccessarily and billing Medicaid. The fact that they didn’t tell the parent beforehand tells me it’s probably Medicaid fraud.

Jan. 17, 2013 at 12:44pmThe genetics argument doesn’t work for me here!
She’s 4 and kids aren’t born with teeth so, in 3 years or less she is missing teeth and what remains is rotted.
NO WAY thats genetics! Thats bottle rot and bad parenting, period.

Jan. 17, 2013 at 12:36pmI feel that the mom is trying to get money from the Pediatric dentist by making a big scene, when this is a routine happening with this type of dental neglect. She is most likely on Medicaid and we as tax payers are the ones footing the bill. The child deserves better…better parents that is!

Jan. 17, 2013 at 1:20pmWhen I was five I had to take Tetracycline for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. It caused dark spots in my permanent teeth. About 4 or 5 yrs. later, mom took me to a dental school for a checkup. They put 4 fillings, which I still have, in those dark spots created by drug. They didn’t tell her they were going to do it, because they knew she wouldn’t agree. She had to pay out pocket for it.
I finally figured out what had happened after talking w/ an orthodontist about the pattern of fillings, when I had braces. I thought it odd that they were identical on both sides of my mouth!

Jan. 17, 2013 at 12:31pmOkay, I get the whole hereditary thing but if you have a problem with your teeth that you have inherited, wouldn’t you want to brush and floss three times a day with the best brush and floss on the market, so you could delay the inevitable? I’m just sayin. A full mouth of silver at the age of four is not just hereditary, it’s also severe parental neglect!

Jan. 17, 2013 at 12:21pmThe parent is at fault here. There is absolutely no reason for a four year old to have that much oral deterioration. Poor oral hygiene and poor parental oversight! I physically brush and floss my children’s teeth every single time. Not a single cavity and a huge thumbs up from the dentist. This little girl has a rough road ahead if this lack of discipline remains.

Jan. 17, 2013 at 12:18pmPlease, be reasonable people! Why do you assume neglect? Every tooth in my head was capped or filled by the time I was ten. It’s called hereditary, and there’s not a thing mom could’ve done. Has NOTHING to do with hygiene or parenting!

Jan. 17, 2013 at 1:43pmHeredity is a biggie. In the Appalachian mountains, people were still having all their permanents pulled and getting dentures(just like in George Washington’s time) up until the 1970′s. Most are English descent and have terrible teeth. A cousin of mine was that way. All her baby teeth were rotten and I know it wasn’t her mom’s fault.

Jan. 17, 2013 at 12:17pmThis child is receiving her dental benefits through Medicaid, and the stainless crowns are all that they cover. The teeth that are crowned are all “baby” teeth and will be falling out over time anyway.
What is more atrocious (but pretty typical in the Medicaid population, unfortunately) is that the parents can’t manage to brush her damm teeth at least once a day. Had they been doing that, this story wouldn’t even be here…..

Jan. 17, 2013 at 12:16pmVisit http://www.westonaprice.org/ , there is a lot to learn about teeth. This is a mothers neglect and a poor diet (prolly goldfish crackers and chicken nuggets) that has lead to the tooth decay. Lack of certain minerals in the blood robs a person’s teeth and bone. This poor child is now going to deal with metal poisoning and no telling what else…

Jan. 17, 2013 at 12:16pmWhen I was a new mom I once took my daughter to a pediatric dentist for a routine cleaning and assured her that it was just a cleaning. While we were there the dentist insisted that she needed a crown on a tooth. He said, Ï have the time now so I’ll do it today. Unfortunately my daughter and I were the victims because she wasn’t prepared for this and didn’t trust me afterward. Plus I wasn’t prepared to pay for the crown but had to come up with the money. After that incident I found a dentist that not only allowed me into the room with my daughter but I found the strength of character to ask appropriate questions and make follow-up appointments if further work was needed to be done. This comes with experience. I’m sure that mother will not make the same mistake again. I’m giving the mom the benefit of the doubt that she was unaware of it happening and that it wasn’t money related. Thank goodness for the good Samaritan dentist for replacing those hideous crowns.

Jan. 17, 2013 at 12:15pmI think the amazing thing is that the mother didn’t know what the treatment plan for her daughter was before it was done. I know when I have to go to the dentist I know exactly what is going to be done so I can figure out how I’m going to pay for it.

Jan. 17, 2013 at 12:05pmThis is not surprising. I feel for the girl (who I understand would be self-conscience about this…) as this will be rough for her until the “nice Guy” doc. fixes her for free (what a good man…. really).
For those of you out there that don’t know, there is a product out there called “temperin” that can be found at most local CVS or Meijer’s.
This product is used to re-attach caps and such and is like a clay that hardens into a plaster.
If you have a cavity in a “non-chewing place” like on the side of a tooth, this can fill the cavity and relieve all the pain until you can get to the dentist (even for long periods of time). Before bed, Brush your teeth 2x to get the REAL clean… Use Listerine, then rinse 2 to 3 times with water… Fill cavity with product and let sit overnight (do not eat or drink after doing this). Next morning, the pain will be gone, and this will last for months (if need be) and when it comes out, either repeat process, or see dentist.
I have a cavity that I have had for about 4 years, and I tried to get it fixed, but when I went to dentist, the moron filled a minor cavity and left the big one alone… So I do this, and I have not had tooth pain, or any problems for years (and each application lasts for months).
Be warned, doing this with unclean mouth can lead to MAJOR problems… Not recommended if you CAN afford a dentist.
