President Obama’s press conference on gun control is barely a day old and already, the reactions have been fierce. Naturally enough, most of the more entertaining reactions have come from the president’s supporters, who, judging by what we’ve seen, seem to think the best way to engage in a level-headed debate is to act as non-level-headed as possible. The following are the top five responses to the President’s proposal.

#5. Toure makes a point. We think.

Maybe we should say it in English, maybe then they’ll understand. No one is talking about taking away all civilian guns. No one but the NRA.

#4. E.J. Dionne complains about the NRA

Too often, moderation has become a synonym for cowardice. Too often, moderates lack the guts to define the sensible middle of the road themselves — as Obama has done on the gun issue — and then defend it. Instead, they yield to the temptation to calibrate where everyone else stands before deciding what they believe. This allows extremists who lack any shame to drag our discourse off the road entirely, into a ditch of unreason, fear and invective.

After the NRA’s vile new advertisement that uses Secret Service protection for the president’s daughters to make a small-minded political point, can anyone take the organization’s arguments seriously again? Aren’t politicians who continue to bow low before the NRA complicit with a crowd that lacks any sense of decency?

It tells us all we need to know that the gun lobby is deeply afraid of the facts and the evidence. This is why one of the most important actions the president took was to end the ban on research into gun violence by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that the weapons lobby had forced through a compliant Congress.

#3. Bob Schieffer makes odd comparisons

Let’s remember: there was considerable opposition when Lyndon Johnson went to the Congress and…presented some of the most comprehensive civil rights legislation in the history of this country. Most people told him he couldn’t get it done, but he figured out a way to do it. And that’s what Barack Obama is going to have to do…what happened in Newtown was probably the worst day in this country’s history since 9/11. We found Osama bin Laden. We tracked him down. We changed the way that we dealt with that problem. Surely, finding Osama bin Laden; surely, passing civil rights legislation, as Lyndon Johnson was able to do; and before that, surely, defeating the Nazis, was a much more formidable task than taking on the gun lobby.

#2. Piers Morgan is “sick”

The pair of you would like the right to have a tank and you don’t agree with a single–a single one of President Obama’s proposals for gun control. And you know what? It makes me sick when I hear people say that kind of stuff.

#1. Charles Krauthammer points out inconvenient facts

Democrats are going to be the ones who stop this. Harry Reid would like to put the blame on the Republican House. He said he’s not going to present anything to the Senate that won’t actually pass the House which is another way of saying, ‘I don’t want to force Democrats in the Senate who are from red states who are opposing this legislation to make a suicidal vote in support of this if it’s not going to pass.’ It is a Democratic issue, it is a Democratic problem.

I give the president credit for sincerity of this. There’s not a lot of political advantage in this as there is in a lot of other stuff he’s pushing. He didn’t have a plan to do this. This was not what he campaigned on last year, it wasn’t on his agenda. It was, I think, a genuine response to the massacre in Newtown which, I think, moved him.

The problem is he doesn’t know what to do and no one knows what to do. The things he signed today, the executive orders, are useless. It’s the appearance of motion. I think it’s sincere, he wants to do a little at the edges; a little research here, a little encouragement here. But everybody understands it’s not going to make any difference. So, he is saying that the three big items are the ban on assault weapons, on the big magazines and the idea of having the background checks. I think they are not going to pass. I think he will expend some capital, but the country simply isn’t ready to do anything near that.

  IF the president applied for a CWP or to purchase a gun in Florida he would be asked a few simple questions. One of them is, in part, “have you ever used marijuana or cocaine” to which you answer yes or no. IF he checks yes then no gun or permit. IF he checks no the he is lying since he was very open on a public forum concerning his drug use as a college student in his book. So no he would not pass the background check.

Please read the entire thing because it really clears up the difference between information that is always sealed from the public no matter who you are, and information that is sealed due to a court order. Pres. Obama has never gone to court to seal any of his information. That has just been a Conservative urban legend that gained steam by people who wanted to discredit him.

When you hide something, and you have the backing of the powers that be to help keep it hidden, it can be very hard to prove a negative…that he was NOT born in the US. Create a good enough paper trail with the “help of freinds’ and things can appear quite good…until you look closer.

For instance, during the 2008 campaign, Obama claimed that his dying mother had fought with insurance companies over coverage for her cancer treatments. This has been proven to be a falsehood. Yet Obama continued to perpetuate this lie. The WaPo called his assertions “misleading”.
  Then there’s Obama’s claiming he got a 3.4 average at Columbia, yet we know he DIDN’T graduate with honors from Columbia.

  I absolutely agree! Why is the president, who is a public figure, allowed to have EVERYTHING in his background SEALED? I don’t remember any President’s before Obama, except for Bill Clinton, SEALING everything in his background. If I remember right, all of them have made their records public. This also goes for members of his cabinet and “advisers” . Do we even know if Geitner ever paid his back taxes with interest and penalities? What about Eric Holder? So why should the Federal Government, State or Local Governments have access to our Medical Records or any of our other background info? The background checks that my state does covers enough!   The founders made it clear that the second amendment was to protect against a tyrannical government. When you understand what kind of weapons the government has like fighter jets, drones with hellfire missiles, nerve gas, biological weapons, nuclear weapons, tanks, artillery, mortars, laser guided missiles and bombs and thousands of other weapons then the claim that an AR15 with a 30 round magazine is too powerful is laughable. The idea that our government can never become tyrannical is just as laughable. We are seeing it before our very eyes.   See the opening shot for the video at the beginning of #1? 0bama with a handful of children. Reminds me of a couple of grainy TV shots that I watched back in 1990 before we even began to start Operation Desert Shield. At least Saddam Hussein was honest enough to call those children and others around him what they were….human shields. They are they as shields to fend off claims and observations made by the right. No explanation how he got into the Schools He got into since his family didn’t have any money and most of his education was obtained in other countries. No explanation how he got a Pennsylvania Social Security Number when he never lived in Pennsylvania. His draft card has been proven to be a forgery so there are questions if he ever registered for the draft. The so called birth certificate he presented has been proven to be a fake. The interview with his grandmother when she said he was born in Kenya. The advertisement for his first book that said he was from kenya. There was an interview with him where he himself said he was born in kenya. There has been no explanation for any of these things.

  The real discussion should be as to what has caused the increase in crimes with a firearm, not how to limit ownership or access. What kind of video games are children most interested in today? Answer, anything with violence. Maybe we should begin policing the entertainment industry’s exposing our children to violence. Naw, that ones too easy.

  Absolutely right! While I know that his kids are high risk targets and appreciate that they require some extra protection, our kids are just as special to us as his are to him. What about the celebritities whose children attend private schools with security officers in place? Are the value of the kids based on the income level of the parents?
  
  There were three incidences of mass gun violence and the libs think that justifies the punishing of an entire nation of people. Had one person on the staff in New Town had a weapon, the punk could have been stoppped when he shot out the window in the locked door. Had a dead lock with the key out of reach from a broken window been in place this could have slowed him down long enough for the reaction for an armed teacher to defuse the situation. In all cases the perp had an established pattern of mental issues. In China, in 2010 a crazy entered a school and killed 20 small children and one teacher with a knife, in 2012 same country 20 small children were maimed with a knife before the crazy could be stopped.
  
  Blaming the NRA and law abiding gun holders will not solve the problem, and either the libs have some mental issues unable to put the facts together or are inline with obam’s real agenda.

  You are incorrect, by boy. Pres. Obama’s first EO did the exact opposite of what you are implying. It revoked Pres. Bush’s EO 13,233 which enabled former Presidents and Vice Presidents to limit access to their records. Pres. Obama overturned this in his first EO. His first EO was all about transparency. If you don’t believe me, go look it up yourself on credible sites. Read the actual text of the EO, then maybe you’ll understand.
  
  Also, for those of you who have asked. Again – Pres. Obama has not sealed his college records – he just hasn’t released them. No Presidents have released theirs (Bush’s were leaked, but he did not personally have them released). If this doesn’t make sense to you, then I don’t know what to say anymore. But, NOT RELEASING RECORDS because they aren’t a requirement of the job and because NONE of his predessors ever had to, and SEALING them in court are TWO very different things. He did the former, not the latter.
  
  Also, someone else asked me about his medical records. I have no idea about them, but I do know that in 2008 his most recent medical exam info. was released finding him in very good health.

Ej Dionne’s complaint shows she is suffering from the criticisms of her own complaint. She states, “[the gun lobby] is deeply afraid of the facts and the evidence.” However, she ignores the blatant miss use or negelect of use of facts by ALL those advocating gun control. She also states, “After the NRA’s vile new advertisement that uses Secret Service protection for the president’s daughters.” However, if you watch the full NRA commercial it gives MANY more case examples than just the President kids whose school guards may or may not be exclusively Secret Service.

  Sidwell Friends school had a staff of 9 armed guards. Whatever secret service agents are there is another issue entirely. The staff of 9 are NOT due to Obama’s kids being there. That school has had armed guards long before Obama showed up.

  I have read and heard people saying that The presidents children need special protection because he is the president. What Parent would think that someone else’s Children are more important and deserve more protection than their own. Can anyone tell me that these numbsculls including Krauthammer rationalize that someone else’s children are more important than yours. Idiots. I do believe that all children should have the same protection that is afforded the the rich and those that are politically connected. But not everyone has the financial means or the organization of the federal government as in politically connected or the rich to be able to provide armed security for their children.   You don’t find it hypocritical that nearly all of the politicians in Washington D.C. who have children of grade or high school age send them to schools that have armed guards yet proclaim that the NRA’s suggestion for armed guards in school is somehow ludicrous? 78% of Americans actually think that having armed guards at schools is a good idea, and 27,000 schools already have them.

  There are a lot of important people politicians and alike that send their kids to that school. It’s funny for them Gun Free Zones is the solution for protecting their kids. It’s like those of us that believe that it’s safer if people are armed than when people aren’t.   KathyVanDyke, It’s been Obama’s plan all along to go after our guns. That’s what Fast and Furious was supposed to be fore but it backfired when someone snitched on the Government. The purpose was to get Mexico so pissed at us as to demand we disarm our citizens but the death of our border patrol agent and the testimony of the whistleblower showed that it was the governments fault and not the fault of our laws. It backfired on the Administration. Shortly after Obama’s election in one of those open mike incidents his was heard telling Mrs. Brady of Brady Bill fame that he was working on gun control under the radar. So he snaked around the issues, the GOP didn’t press and here we are folks. Dump the leaders of the GOP, because elections have consequences, within hours of hisre-election, his very first order of business was to restart the path to the gun ban. They pounced on the Newtown incident. They just needed that, and here they are, taking advantage. Why aren’t they going after the sensationalism toward thugging with guns found in what the entertainment industry calls “Entertainment”?

An excellent email written by one of my friends:

Yesterday, President Obama issued some new guidelines for gun safety. Those of us who are decent and law-abiding people feel tremendous pain and loss through the recent shootings of innocent children. Satan is on the prowl and, in these latter days, wants to bring havoc to America. Someone who hated America once said, America will be defeated, but not by an outside power, rather, America will decay from the inside. That is quite possible for, in one generation, morality has sunk to an all-time low.

Among other things, the president made these five points …

we will update background checks and provide incentives for sharing information
we will keep dangerous people from buying guns
we will provide steps to follow before a seized gun is returned
we will provide guidelines for private sellers
we will launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign

These may be well and good points to strive for. However, I wish he had made these five points instead …

we will encourage America to fast and pray and seek forgiveness for our past sins in the hope that our God will hear and heal our land
we will begin a drive to bring prayer and Bible reading back into our schools and institutions
we will create a task force to review video games that bring glory to killing and maiming in an effort to remove them from society forever
we will create another task

We need our guns to protect ourselves, our families, our lives and our Liberties. That is why or founders emphasized that our right to keep and bear arms ” shall not be infringed”. Our problem is that we have failed to organize a well regulated militia. Psychos of the past have stigmatized the idea of having a militia, but one militia or more are certainly necessary to the maintenance of a free state, and free people.   (I’m sorry if this doubles.) Thank you. Your comment is right on. I am not particularly interested in hunting deer, and I’m quite weary of people pretending that is our issue. We need the right to keep and bear arms and ammunition so that we can protect our inalienable rights (namely; life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and private property). What we lack is the well- regulated militia necessary to the maintenance of a free people in the occasion that those people are faced with an elitist and tyrannical government. Isn’t it ironic that we fear our government so much that we dare not say we want to have guns in order to protect our freedom? The courts must prosecute criminals for their actions when they have threatened or trampled on the inalienable rights set forth in the Constitution, and the media and our leaders must stop vilifying private citizens who cherish our Constitution and the freedoms and respect it guarantees each law-abiding individual.

If they used the term military type or style in any law or ordinance means all firearms since the revolutionary war. legalese for all fire arms. and should be noted and reported on.Another term is assault rifle any rifle used in an assault on a person or nation would be considered an assault rifle.   I am so sick of his props—- have you ever seen another president exploit people so regularly? Or is it just easier to see through with Obama? He did promise transparency. Too bad so many Americans are completely blind.

Ever notice how dictators always surround themselves with children when they do something to reduce the rights of the people? Like the dictator is taking your rights away, FOR THE CHILDREN, don’t you know?!?! The idiot in the White House is most definitely a dictator and needs to be removed from office by all legal means possible.

  All of them do it, Mao, Stalin, even Hitler had photo ops with children. While most presidents have photo ops with kids only fascists use them as props when stripping the rights of its subjects.

  Dictators all over the world do that,it’s a tactic they find very effective on the uneducated and gullible.
  That’s the first thing I thought as well when I saw the Marxist POS surrounded by his props,a vile disgusting man indeed. Of course the regime isn’t going to start rounding up guns today because they’re doing the slow death of the second amendment. It’s much easier to strip people of their rights over time so they don’t realize they’re losing their rights until it’s too late.
