Atheists to Distribute ‘An X-Rated Book’ to Public School Kids to Combat Christians’ Bible Give Away

Central Florida Freethought to Give An X Rated Bible in Florida Public Schools

Atheists in Orange County, Fla., are taking the Bible to task. Central Florida Freethought (CFF), a local, secular group associated with the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), plans to distribute atheist books in public schools after a religious organization began giving away free Bibles in 11 of the county’s public schools. At least one of the literary works, “An X-Rated Book: Sex & Obscenity in the Bible,” is sure to raise eyebrows.

David Williamson, a member of the CFF, believes that allowing the Bibles in schools is wrong, so to combat the practice his organization is planning to distribute its own literature — material that affirms atheist, agnostic and “free-thinking” themes.

“The county has invited people in now to do this, and what we need to do is put the views of the biblical creationists into perspective with our perspective,”said Williamson. ”It’s not tit for tat. Our effort is to ensure the county realizes this is the wrong policy.”

Earlier this week, CFF put out a press release outlining its plans to distribute “materials about atheism, agnosticism, and secular humanism” to public school pupils. The release reads:

The Central Florida Freethought Community, a chapter of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, has obtained consent this week from the Orange County (FL) School Board to distribute materials about atheism, agnosticism, and secular humanism to students in public schools. This permission comes after the School Board allowed a group of Christians to distribute Bibles to students on campus during school hours for Religious Freedom Day on January 16. [...]

Books, pamphlets, and brochures from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, American Atheists, and the Secular Student Alliance are on their way today to Central Florida and distribution will begin as soon as the promised written permission is received from the School Board and volunteers are cleared to come on campus. Some items being considered for distribution are “An X-Rated Book: Sex & Obscenity in the Bible,” “Ten Common Myths About Atheists,” as well as literature about starting student led secular organizations on campus and books by atheists Dan Barker and Madalyn Murray O’Hair among others.

In the release, Williamson condemned “Biblical literalists” for convincing the school board to allow their religious materials in the school. He claimed that Christians are making schools “a religious battleground of sorts.” To create a balance, the atheist leader said his group will counter “religious propaganda” with their own materials.

FOX 35 News Orlando

Under the district’s rules, outside groups — believing and non-believing, alike — are invited to hand out faith-based materials. However, representatives of various organizations are not allowed to have contact with students. They can, however, setup a table and leave the materials for consumption. Information that includes pornographic material and references that tout tobacco, alcohol and drugs will not be allowed.

Considering these banned subjects, the FFRF’s book, “An X-Rated Book: Sex & Obscenity in the Bible,” will likely raise the ire of critics. The title alone leads one to wonder if the contents will render it unacceptable.

atheists don’t have a credo because other than a lack of belief in a god or gods, we are all over the spectrum politically, socially, and economically. And while I understand the point they are trying to make with this handout, it is not appropriate, and I doubt most atheists support this.
There are some atheists who seem determined to trigger a religious, or anti-religoius war. Most of us just want to live peacefully with our neighbors, fighting only when we must to defend our rights. In the meantime though, consider this. What if the handout held nothing but biblical quotes about sex and violence? Would that bother you? If so, then why does handing out an entire bible not bother you? All that said, as long as there is no pressure for students to take the bibles or other handouts, I for one have no objection to the handouts. If nothing else, the bible is a part of our history and our literature.

““There is no God, and I hate him.””

I’ve known several atheists, and none of them have ever said anything like this. It would be akin to saying to a Christian like me, “you love God, and God is Zeus in disguise.” It’s both false and dismissively insulting.

Burke, J. Ashleigh. An X-Rated Book: Sex and Obscenity in the Bible (Madison, WI: Freedom

      From Religion Foundation, 1993).

This book highlights sections of the Bible that contain “sex and obscenity.” It’s not any more X-rated than it’s source – the Bible.

@AntonW I’m pretty sure they’ll use some modern liberal translation which completely changes the interpretation and context of the text, and furthermore, will not teach any moral or valuable lessons from those passages, but will, as always, only mock and ridicule a subject for which they don’t know much about or care to honestly understand.

@ANTONW — What Christ thinks is what is important and He made it abundantly clear in the referenced Scripture that anyone who leads a child into sin, including encouraging unbelief in Him, will face a far greater and more terrifying degree of punishment. @ANTONW–If “Little Jimmy” were your child, would you not warn him about the consequences of playing in the street or the dangers of playing with matches? You would speak to him about these things to protect him from harm and to instill in him an understanding of danger. As a good parent, you would also instruct him in a spirit of love. God is a loving parent. He know that we are all sinners; therefore, His own Son took our sin upon Himself that we might receive forgiveness and eternal life. We must receive this gift through our own free will (choice as you probably would say). Yes, I would tell Little Jimmy about Jesus so that he would know he has a loving Savior and assurance that he has no reason to fear (even death).

Higherroad, the concept of a sacrifice as payment is an ancient one. Ancient people also used to symbolically put their sins on a goat and chase it off so it would carry their sins away into the desert. That’s where the word originated.

My story about Jimmy is true. Frightening children into accept an unproveable belief system is primitive and wrong in my view.

@ANTONW–God’s Word says that He is from everlasting to everlasting. He is the Ancient of Days. Rather than being an ancient myth, however, God is both omniscient and omnipresent. We are finite–He is infinite. I am sorry that you cannot believe. There is no greater joy and peace than the relationship with our living Savior. Yes, I am familiar with the “scapegoat.” Only Christ’s blood cleanses sin because He was perfect and pure. No further sacrifices need to be made other than submitting our will to His will.

@ANTONW–I believe this because God’s Word not only chronicles the 4,000 year history of the Judao-Christian faith, but also the process God used in revealing to man the road to salvation which was ultimately completed through His own Son, Jesus Christ. I read God’s Word, I see the intricate balance of physical laws and the distinct characteristics of His living creatures that only an intelligent Creator could have conceived, Also, the prophecies spoken by the ancient prophets have all come to pass except for the final appearing of the antichrist and the events leading to the end of days. The evidence is overwhelming for the existence of God. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit brings comprehension and understanding to those who seek Him.

This is not a response for you, but merely because scrolling down, you’ve ‘contributed’ not less than 20 responses or comments, and that makes me wonder what are you seeking? Why you feel it necessary to insult people who cherish their gift of Faith. Billions of dollars have been spent by Satan’s agents throughout the years to try to debunk God. A real thinking person would have to ask WHY?
God doesn’t hide; God is the source of all life. He gave us free choice and we exercise it every day in all that we do. It is my most valuable possession – the relationship I have with God. It replaces every crutch known to man. You need to investigate your real motives and perhaps then you’ll see that you are possessed by Satan/doing his work/for what purpose? Your statements about man, origins etc. prove how isolated you feel from life. You are on your own little island and you’ve just understood that you came, you live and you will die – are you trying to find others to float on your island with you or are you merely angry that you are alone with no hope of eternity?
God has made it (Faith) so simple. All anyone has to do is ASK HIM for it. This entry by me is not for you as much as others who read comments and may feel their faith shaken. That is Satan’s purpose of course. The thing we must do is acknowledge God, Thank Him and daily ask Him to grow our faith as obviously there are Satan’s minions trying their best to discourage faith. Sad beings.

      PattyHenry, you stated:

“You need to investigate your real motives and perhaps then you’ll see that you are possessed by Satan/doing his work/for what purpose?”

No, I’m not possessed by “Satan.” Satan, demons etc. do not exist. I originally posted my observations on the story. As one with experience writing for a news paper, I found the story to be misleading. It gives the reader the wrong idea about what materials the FFRF is offering (it is not pornography) and it also seems to have an editorial slant to it. Billy Hallowell is a good writer and has done an excellent job covering stories for The Blaze. I felt this one had some room for improvement though so I shared my view on it.

Most all of the rest of my contributions here are replies to the hateful and false personal accusations directed toward me. If I did believe the supernatural world was real, I might suspect that many of you religious believers were possessed with evil spirits yourselves:)

“Your statements about man, origins etc. prove how isolated you feel from life.” LOL. They do? That’s quite a statement. How could knowledge about the history of modern humans and their origins result in that? You’re not making any sense PattyH (but you are at least consistent.)

ANTON, ANTON: You make my case so easy: SATAN and DEMONS do NOT exist? REALLY? That’s been Satan’s gig since the beginning…trying to convince people he does not exist and that there is no evil. There is GOOD, there is LOVE, there is EVIL and Hate. None of those things are needed to “keep exploding as in the big bang theory” but they exist, therefore GOD exists/Satan Exists. You cannot prove the absence of EVIL or Demons or Satan but historical events can prove they do exist.

I think you are evil. I think anyone who tries to deny the existence of GOD and then the existence of Evil or the Devil or Satan is very evil. God will deal with you. IF you spend 1/10th the time trying to prove you were right in reading about GOD from Great minds like Ft. Robert Barron, Scott Hahn and there are many many others… these are men of great educations and experience who know GOD. I know GOD because I love Him and He’s everything to me. I got to know Him because I asked to. So thanks for making my case. I doubt there are many who will buy your “no evil/no satan” . It’s your canoe… sorry for you, but YOU still need to examine why YOU need to convince people that GOD does not exist. IF you write back, just tell me that.

So here’s one that’s not meant for sarcasm – but for deep thought: IF the killings in CT would have been done at an Atheist gathering and not at a grade school, would there still be the upheaval in America for gun control? Or deeper – what if the killings were done at an Atheist Youth gathering? Or at a KKK Youth gathering?

I’m a Christian, and have two kids. So don’t go off by throwing this back at me. I’m simply putting this out for people to think about and find their true feelings to what’s going on in our Country. EVERYTHING is reacted to by the perception of which it is presented right? So just maybe the CT killings ARE more of a knee jerk reaction, and the ‘gun control agenda’ is simply riding the wave. Oby’s team did openly admit that they HAVE TO ACT QUICKLY before America comes to their senses. Hey, Oby’s half White. If he had a son, do you think he would have looked like the S/H killer?

Atheists, like Penn Jillette, are not militant and they respect others ability to worship whom they like without persecution. They fear losing, and they fear being judged for losing. Epspecially by a righteous God.

At some point in everyone’s life you bet your soul on a horse. You don’t get to see who won until after death. It’s a scary proposition for an Atheist, made even more so because the very faith that they espouse is a cold and disinterested thing. It’s a belief in nothingness, backed up by nothing, and it’s for nothing. Which makes them…nothing.

Truthfully, I’ve only known a few true atheists, most salt their belief system with just enough uncertainty and mysticism to appeal to their inborn need for spirtuality. I wish they would take the next step and develop a loving relationship with God, but it’s hard for many to admit they were wrong. Pride is a perverse and evil thing.

Sharon Rose, let me help you with your question.

You sound like the person who says: “Atheists actually know, deep inside, that there’s a God, as that’s perfectly obvious; they are simply too proud and arrogant to admit the existence of something greater than themselves.” Not exactly. You see, the existence of a god is only “obvious” if you’ve been brainwashed (either by others, or by your own irrationality) into believing it. Non-religious people, like Glenn’s friend Penn Jillette, are truly convinced that there’s no god, and are not in denial.

Newspeak and “War is Peace” is 1984. 1984 and Brave New World are dystopian novels that wind up that way through different means. 1984 is dystopian through propaganda and single-source messaging from the government; BNW winds up there from information overload and immediate gratification.

If Christians have the right to push bibles in the schools, agnostic or atheist groups certainly have the right to distribute material that also references the bible. You may not like the message but they have the same 1st amendment rights as anyone else. Besides, why is a school board allowing bibles in the schools in the first place? The place for them is a church or religious school. I’m not interested in seeing any religious references in the schools. The Supreme Court has already spoken on the subject…

@Winedude You mean the same Supreme Court that ruled Obamacare constitutional and the same Supreme Court that said rapists don’t deserve the death penalty? Last time I checked, the Supreme Court is not infallible, and certainly not supreme rulers over the American people, much less of the world.

Restricting the Bible, a book, in certain settings, and censoring its content, to a certain audience, is a violation of the first Amendment, and the tenth.

SC Justice Joseph Story, appointed by Madison, Father of the Constitution, said, in his most famous and popular Commentaries on the Constitution of the US, “In fact, every American colony, from its foundation down to the revolution, with the exception of Rhode Island, (if, indeed, that state be an exception,) did openly, by the whole course of its laws and institutions, support and sustain, in some form, the Christian religion; and almost invariably gave a peculiar sanction to some of its fundamental doctrines. And this has continued to be the case in some of the states down to the present period, without the slightest suspicion, that it was against the principles of public law, or republican liberty. Indeed, in a republic, there would seem to be a peculiar propriety in viewing the Christian religion, as the great basis, on which it must rest for its support and permanence, if it be, what it has ever been deemed by its truest friends to be, the religion of liberty.”

      Windude,
I respect your point and I politely offer something else to consider.
You are pondering the nature of darkness while ignoring light.
Evil is the choice mankind makes when it elects to ignore
love, compassion, and empathy. When humans begin to
behave selfishly, they commit evil acts. We have free will
because love must come from a free choice, not a
robotically programed instinct. All sin, great and small,
past and future has already been forgiven for those who
will simply accept forgiveness. That’s it. It’s so simple
people just can’t understand it. When you get a glimpse
of what awaits, you will realize that the ultimate evils on
this earth are insignificant. We still suffer them painfully
and we try to comfort each other through that suffering.
Pointing out acts of evil as evidence of a futile existence
does not take into account the very miracle of existence.
We cannot understand the nature of evil any more than
an infant can comprehend the discomfort of its own birth.
Evil has been stopped and suffering has been eliminated.
We just haven’t experienced it yet. But for a being that lives
outside of Time and Space, It is already done. Our weakness
is that we just don’t know it yet.
I hope you are having a great day. Peace be with you.

They talk about academic freedom at the same time they are banning books, and conservatives from campuses all across the nation. For all of you that assume only morons read the Bible, any quick survey of classic literature will find allusions to and direct quotes from, the Bible. There are more good commentaries on it than I fit in my house. They were written by highly intelligent men who were educated in the classics and who could fluently read and write, in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew in addition to their own native tongues.

But none of this matters all that much. Very soon everyone, even the mockers, will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Nothing like losing an argument about the existence of God like having to stand before Him in judgment. I pray you all escape it by coming to Christ.

“Formed in 1976 by Annie Gaylor Jr. and Sr., the foundation was incorporated nationally in 1978. It has grown ever since and is now supported by over 11,000 members. It is run out of an 1855 building at the corner of West Washington Avenue and North Henry Street in Madison, Wisconsin that once was a church rectory. stopprintn, wow. How very “christian” and “American” of you. Not only going against the teachings of your messiah but also violating someones individual rights. Apparently you christians do need an imaginary hell because jail isn’t enough of a deterrent for you.

BodyBag – They’re lying if they claim their money comes from dues, which amounts to 440,000 from 11,000 members.

      @Woodyee,
Is that pronounced Woodee or woodeye, cause your vision must be failing.
“With a minimum annual membership fee of $40, the foundation has saved over $3.3 million (US) and receives over $1 million in dues per year.”

      In simple math, that’s $1,000,000 = Z x $40 x 11,000 where Z = some multiplier of the $40.
You may have skipped over the word “minimum” in your attempts to lie about something. I’m sure it wasn’t intentional and we’ll never catch you lying again…right?

      Your welcome.
