‘Religiously-Repugnant’: Progressive Preacher Jim Wallis Blasts the NRA for Its ‘Dangerous Theology’

Jim Wallis Lambastes the NRAs Dangerous Theology & Calls for More Gun Control

Jim Wallis, a well-known, progressive faith leader, is no fan of the National Rifle Association (NRA). In fact, he’s an outspoken advocate for more gun control and, on Wednesday, he publicly joined other left-of-center faith leaders to push fervently for government intervention in cracking down on firearms. In an article published yesterday on his web site, Sojourners, Wallis continued to air his views about the nation’s most prominent gun-rights group, taking specific issue with the NRA’s so-called “dangerous theology.”

“As an evangelical Christian, I’m going to make this theological,” wrote the Christian leader, going on to call a recent statement from Wayne LaPierre, executive vice-president of the NRA, “morally mistaken, theologically dangerous, and religiously-repugnant.”

The comment at the center of Wallis’ contempt? LaPierre‘s statement in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that, “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” The faith leader proceeded to delve into the apparent moral and theological issues inherent in the NRA staffer’s views on the matter.

“The world is not full of good and bad people; that is not what our scriptures teach us. We are, as human beings, both good and bad,” Wallis wrote. “This is not only true of humanity as a whole, but we as individuals have both good and bad in us.”

It is with this bad that the progressive faith leader contends negativity can arise — particularly when it pertains to firearms and the availability of certain guns.

“When we are bad or isolated or angry or furious or vengeful or politically agitated or confused or lost or deranged or unhinged — and we have the ability to get and use weapons only designed to kill large numbers of people — our society is in great danger,” he continued.

Jim Wallis Lambastes the NRAs Dangerous Theology & Calls for More Gun Control

Jim Wallis, president and CEO of Sojourners, and Sayyid Syeed(R) of the Islamic Society of North America, smile at each other after speaking during a press conference at the United Methodist Building January 15, 2013 in Washington, DC. The group of religious leader organized by Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence held the news conference to speak out against gun violence and call for gun law reform including a ban on assault style weapons and universal background checks. Credit: AFP/Getty Images

Wallis decried the notion that ensuring that there are more guns than bad people is a good idea and he advocated for advancing policies that will protect America’s children. In order to keep kids safe, the faith leader argued that firearms must be contained and curtailed. Then, his’ op-ed quickly turned from the NRA to race and the impact of gun violence on blacks and Hispanics:

Let me be personal and theological again, this time with Rev. Phil Jackson, a young pastor from Chicago who I talked with earlier this week. A young, dynamic street pastor, he told me that Chicago had 2,400 shootings in 2012 — 505 of them resulting in death. More than 100 of them were children from elementary to high school. Almost all of the murdered ones were people and children of color — African-American and Latino. That’s more gun deaths in Chicago than American troop deaths in Afghanistan last year. One city.

Rev. Jackson thinks that God cares as much about murdered children of color in Chicago as God cares about murdered white children in Connecticut. But it seems that mostly the white children get our attention and break our hearts. He thinks those murdered black and brown kids also get God’s attention as much as murdered white kids. But he wonders why they don’t get ours. It’s morally mistaken and also religiously repugnant.

Wallis concluded the piece by calling upon religious people to act based upon their faith and not their politics or personal views on gun advocacy. He also implored parents to call for “a national conversation on guns.” Then, he invoked his 9-year-old son, Jack, and the young boy’s views on gun control — sentiments Wallis said that he agrees with.

“I think that they ought to let people who, like licensed hunters, have guns if they use them to hunt. And people who need guns — who need guns for their job like policemen and army,” Jack recently told his father. “But I don’t think that we should just let anybody have any kind of gun and any kind of bullets that they want. That’s pretty crazy.”

Read Wallis’ entire story here.

You may want to understand the context A man ‘lost an ear’ with a sword. When told to ‘put it away,’
it was not needed AT THAT TIME, John baptist came to lifes end ‘because of a sword,’ and note there was no uprising, however, armed citizenry can also prevent a usurping uprising.

It is written….then again, it is written again. It is the ‘again’ part that many, including this deluded preacher, who by misunderstanding, have propelled Obama back in office. It is exactly this ‘in house’ fighting and making a friend the enemy that has caused a house to fall.

Jim Wallis Blasts the NRA for Its ‘Dangerous Theology’s.

I thought the NRA had to do with firearms not the dangerous ‘study of religion’ which is the prime definition of theology. Jim is an old snake oil sales person and the definition of theology that applies to Jim is ‘fleecing the flock.’ Jim should be a life member of the magic castle, the home of magicians, because of his powers of magic. He’s great at making other peoples money vanish into his own pocket and he uses God as the decoy. Jim is now attempting his magic as a left wing demagogue. Of couse Jim carries his own concealed weapon: His rear end and the trigger is his little finger. The propellant comes in a can of refried beans mixed with boiled cabbage. His best trick of all is he can fire at will. Ask him a challenging question, watch him play with his pinky finger and within seconds you’ll be running for your life.

Jesus did not take Peter’s sword, he merely told him to put it away after he whacked off Malchus’ ear.

The scripture states “Those who live by the sword, shall die by the sword.” He didn’t want Peter to be the aggressor…. if the Roman soldier had attacked Peter, then perhaps he should have died by Peter’s sword. Since Peter had a sword to begin with, it would stand to reason that defensive weapons were not prohibited by Jesus, eh?

Does he like freedom of religion, freedom of speech, etc? The fed gov. has been gradually extending it’s reach far beyond it’s enumerated powers into those reserved to the states and the people, respectively. When the government can encroach on one of our enumerated rights as well, the rest become far less secure. It sets precedent that the government CAN do such things because they already DID.

Don’t tell me that our government can’t become tyrannical until after you read up on things like the Sedition act of 1918, the imprisonment of Japanese Americans, and so on. Such things CAN happen here. “It could never happen HERE”, is an excuse to not make the effort. Many things have already happened that our ancestors would have had a fit about. What will the next generations bring? What kind of government do we want our families to have (when we are gone)? It’s about protecting our rights – all of them- against govt. power, when it may be convenient for the gov. to ignore those rights. It’s not a RIGHT if it is not supported when it is inconvenient.

There are people who want the US to keep the constitution the way many European countries do… it’s there on paper but not enforced. When a government can ignore the provisions of their constitution at will, they will do so. Ours already has. Read it and weep.

Wallis is a liar from the start of this subject. He is not a “evangelical Christian.” He is a leftest, communist preacher. “Evangelical” only in the sense that he preaches the theology of the left. True Christians have used force to help the oppressed throughout history. The innocent will be overtaken by evil if they do not defend themselves. The left would have innocent people lay down and surrender to criminals and other threats. It is not going to be that easy. Citizens who are armed have helped to prevent this country from being invaded by outside forces. What makes Mr Wallis think that a police officer with his good/bad personality would not become a treat with his gun? So who will be left to defend the innocent? President Obama?

It sounds as if he prefers turning the other cheek to meeting violence with violence in the defense of human life. In which case, he has no reason to be upset at the deaths at Sandy hook or in Chicago, where the victims were in fact defenseless.
As n American, he promotes an anti-Constitutional viewpoint. As a preacher, he offers no Biblical evidence that his God wants people unarmed. Or that because people are flawed, they are unworthy of carrying means of self defense.
About the only thing he’s right about is that the Chicago murder rate is deplorable. But even there, gun control isn’t the solution. There are a number of underlying social and political issues that have to be addressed before there will be hope for change.

There are many verses in the Bible that would point to this “minister” that you should not judge others, without removing your own sin.Minister Wallis is allowed his opinions I agree, though he should concentrate on scripture more as it seems that he has forgotten important scripture that reign’s in his secular views.I agree with Gonzo as Mr.Wallis may consider a sebatical to reflect on God’s words.Seems Obama has paid for another voice in a progressive chorus.

As a member of a religious group who has been persecuted by people like the right Reverend, I want to make it clear that the guns he wants taken away will be used to protect us from a runaway government, as well as people like him.

Actually, the Bible talks about not good and bad people but the GODLY and the evil one(s). And truly, it says there is NOT ONE GOOD but only by the blood of Jesus can one be made righteous. Our righteousness is as filthly rags (menstrual cloth literal translation). And it is not through works of righteousness one can be saved but through faith.

Dont preach to the NRA. 12 1/2% are responsible for 50% of the nations murders.
Lower black murder rates to the same per capital as white it would drop the murder rate by 40%

“Jim Wallis, president and CEO of Sojourners, and Sayyid Syeed of the Islamic Society of North America”

“Prog” & “christian” are mutually exclusive terms. It is not possible for prog to be christian.
Jim Wallis is a fraud and a liar.

“As an evangelical Christian, I’m going to make this theological,” He sure has a loose interpretation of evangelical Christianity.

True. Evangelical Christianity does not preach it must force its own views down at everyone. Jim Wallis is the type who wants to force everyone to accept Social Justice even if you don’t like it. Social Justice is the root of the trouble in the world. Jim Wallis needs to look at alot of the African Countries for example why Social Justice is a failure. All those wars and rise of dictators resulted in those same countries adopting Social Justice. The Democratic Republic of Congo which adopted Social Justice and Socialism as a guiding force at independence in 1960 saw the rise of a loony tribal racist leader called Mobutu who renamed everything including himself who took over in 1964 and by 1970 he got rid of all the non African names and he dropped Social Justice and Socialism for the free market system and anti-Socialism and anti-leftist. Will Jim Wallis drop that failed Social Justice ideology and of course he’ll say we’re making this stuff up. The effects in the post Social Justice countries have been slow economic growth with a free market approach. America will face a war if Social Justice ends up being adopted.

Wallis, along with Satan, has highjacked the term “evangelical” for various deviant reasons. He’s playing his roll.. for the wrong team.
