The Combating Terrorism Center (CTC) at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point released a study Tuesday warning against American “far right” groups including the “anti-federalist” movement and strong limited government activists.
The report, titled “Challengers from the Sidelines: Understanding America’s Violent Far-Right,” posits that in recent years, and especially since 2007, “there has been a dramatic rise in the number of attacks and violent plots originating from individuals and groups who self-identify with the far-right of American politics.”
The analysis, conducted by West Point professor and CTC director of terrorism studies Arie Perliger, noted that his study “concentrates on those individuals and groups who have actually perpetuated violence and is not a comprehensive analysis of the political causes with which some far-right extremists identify.” He added that an in-depth look at the data provided addresses three crucial questions:
(1) What are the main current characteristics of the violence produced by the far right?
(2) What type of far-right groups are more prone than others to engage in violence? How are characteristics of particular far-right groups correlated with their tendency to engage in violence?
(3) What are the social and political factors associated with the level of far-right violence? Are there political or social conditions that foster or discourage violence?
The West Point professor said anti-federalists “espouse strong convictions regarding the federal government, believing it to be corrupt and tyrannical, with a natural tendency to intrude on individuals’ civil and constitutional rights. Finally, they support civil activism, individual freedoms, and self government. Extremists in the anti-federalist movement direct most their violence against the federal government and its proxies in law enforcement.”
Perliger also identified limited government activists as belonging to one of three categories: “a racist/white supremacy movement, an anti-federalist movement and a fundamentalist movement.”
According to the Washington Times, the report also draws correlation between mainstream conservatism and what it dubs the violent “far right.” The study then goes on to laud liberals as forward-thinking while maintaining that conservatives harbor a more archaic mindset.
“While liberal worldviews are future- or progressive -oriented, conservative perspectives are more past-oriented, and in general, are interested in preserving the status quo,” the report states.
“The far right represents a more extreme version of conservatism, as its political vision is usually justified by the aspiration to restore or preserve values and practices that are part of the idealized historical heritage of the nation or ethnic community.”
Citing a reported 350 “attacks initiated by far-right groups/individuals” in 2011, the analysis characterizes the liberal-democratic system as inclusive and “designed to emphasize civil rights” while far-right ideology inherently “excludes” minorities.
Perlinger’s study, however, has not gone without meeting a degree of criticism. Speaking to the Times, a Republican congressional staffer slammed: “If [the Defense Department] is looking for places to cut spending, this junk study is ground zero.”
He added that the Combating Terrorism Center should be focused on radical Islam and, at the least, publish a companion report underlying the dangers of left-wing terror groups like “the Animal Liberation Front, Earth Liberation Front, and the Weather Underground.”
The CTC describes itself as “one of the leading academic institutions devoted to the study of terrorism” whose research is informed by three core components including” studying emerging threats, challenging conventional logic and offering counter intuitive insights.”

Jan. 18, 2013 at 12:32pmI am most troubled by the paragraph, “The far right represents a more extreme version of conservatism, as its political vision is usually justified by the aspiration to restore or preserve values and practices that are part of the idealized historical heritage of the nation or ethnic community.”
Remove the words of the sentence from the beginning to the first comma, and you have the basic definition of conservatism. Not far right, not extreme. The tone of the article seems to want to categorize conservatives, as prone to violence, when in fact, the opposite is true.
Very disheartening to see a group from West Point engage in such anti-American propaganda.

Jan. 18, 2013 at 12:26pmAs God is my witness – the progressive creep is now a full fledged sprint, the serpent is now coiled and ready to bit. The leftist is now in charge of everything, and this study is a load of you know what. So they will come for us at some point, make no mistake about that.

Jan. 18, 2013 at 12:25pmWow. Obviously written by a liberal, lefty loon.
I believe there’s a reason that public officials, including the military, swear an oath to the Constitution, not to the Government. Because “…whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends (to secure our rights), it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government…”

Jan. 18, 2013 at 12:22pmI may be mistaken, but I believe that guy signed an order in September 2011 renewing the “state of emergency” (martial law signed under Bush on Sept. 14, 2001) for two more years. Does anyone know when this will, if ever, be lifted?

Jan. 18, 2013 at 12:21pmImagine that. A proponent of the military industrial complex wanting a bigger and bigger military machine to conquer “terrorism”. All the while our government creates, funds and provides weapons to the likes of al Qaeda when it serves the government. This election cycle it is the “far right/tea party” people who are dangerous. Many of our republicans in congress feel the same way.

What in the world is wrong with that? Our historical heritage is what made us the greatest Country in the world (until the asscendance of Liberalism in the mid-1960′s – misspelling intentional). Our “ethnic community” has ALWAYS been a BLENDING of international ethnicities under one common flag for one common cause – freedom!
Yet another educated idiot making money off money stolen from the worker by the government, producing the kind of propaganda the government wants, to stifle The First Amendment, The Second Amendment, The Fourth Amendment, The Fifth Amendment (almost ALL gun control laws are violations of The Fifth), and thus, the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th. The Representative is correct – the CTC MUST be GROUND ZERO for federal budget cuts!

Jan. 18, 2013 at 12:13pmThis is another warning that our military is slowly being restructured to act against American citizens as the new “storm-troopers” instead of being primarily assigned to the defense of this nation against external aggressors.
Note how the report whitewashes the Left: “While liberal worldviews are future- or progressive -oriented, conservative perspectives are more past-oriented, and in general, are interested in preserving the status quo,…” This is a propaganda piece for military commanders to justify oppression against conservative opposition; to treat that view as the enemy. This teaching will surely descend into training for the enlisted ranks, who typically have far less extensive education and experience.
Other distubring measures that have taken place at West Point include removal of references to militant Islam as an enemy, retracting invitations from conservative guest speakers, and ending the traditional teaching of the Judeo-Christian “Just War Theory.”
We have met the enemy, and we foolishly elected them to lead us…into Hell.

Jan. 18, 2013 at 12:12pm“350 attacks by far right groups/ individual” ?????? Where and when? Also, I’m guessing, just because the right stands for the INDIVIDUAL, and doesn’t place its citizens into some categorized victim class, we exclude minorities? What we exclude are those who can’t think as an individual, and those who hate freedom and liberty!

Jan. 18, 2013 at 12:11pmThe problem today is everyone wants to point fingers at someone else for societal ills instead of doing a self-inventory session. Just like everyone is looking for an economic savior or this or that. I’ve come to the conclusion the reason most Americans don’t see that were heading for tyranny is there looking for signs of how it happened in the past. Remember Hitler didn’t come out and say I’m the dictator yet he led his country into evil and chaos beyond comprehension!

Jan. 18, 2013 at 12:10pmThe largest terrorist attack in the world took place not 50 miles south of West Point and thousands of young American soldiers have since died hunting those responsible, yet according to this Alinkskite, a handful of old grey-haired men at the local Tea Party meeting pose the greatest threat.
No wonder Al-Qaeda is winning.

Jan. 18, 2013 at 12:09pmSo the idea is………if you are in power, to label your political opponents as terrorists. Then you could round up everyone who has a different political view than you and put them in prison…..”indefinitely”. Hmmm…..what a great way to silence political opposition. Get them classified as terrorists and then, possibly, on the basis of their belief in limited government, religious beliefs, or any other beliefs contrary to the State have them silenced. Just think, a few states openly tried to ban Chick-fil-A just based on their marriage BELIEFS only a short time ago. And to think that our government could become tyrannical and oppressive…..what silly thinking. Combine this with their demanding gun control and there is nothing to fear at all.

I think this was the very argument espoused by the founders as the reasons for the checks and balances that are supposed to be in place in our government.

I think this professor at West point needs to be fired. He obviously doesn’t believe in upholding the Constitution. The USA is in trouble if they are teaching out soldiers this type of nonsense. Can only pray to God to help us and our children to see the truth and live it.

Jan. 18, 2013 at 12:07pmyes… holding politicians to the Constitution is dangerous… subversive… how, otherwise can you justify a coup d etat, right, generals?
what a ridiculous assessment… let’s not look at drug cartels, gangs, or clearly violent anarchists… go after the tea party… they so destroyed the mall after their rallies… they were so inclusive of all Americans that their positions might catch fire and force the government to stay within the bounds created by our founding fathers…
Shame, on whatever biased, self-important blow hard wants to throw their weight in with the Obama machine’s attack on the Second Amendment.
Happily, the trooops under you must know what a ridiculous Napoleonic little person you really are…

Jan. 18, 2013 at 12:06pmSo Islamic jihadists are NOT terrorists, but Constitutional patriots can be so labeled? Our Founding Fathers (who gave us the ultimate law of the land, the Constitution) would now be classified as “terrorists?” One more step toward a Marxist state.

Jan. 18, 2013 at 12:04pmLooks like they are using things like this to brain-wash up our military to be used against us. Writing is on the wall people. Also, anyone else notice whenever the government does a taxpayer funded BOGUS study it is always, ALWAYS right in line with the political beliefs and goals of those who wanted the study done?
Same thing over in progressive infested Australia, their government wants to do something, they conduct a “study” that in 100% of the cases ALWAYS concludes with what the government wanted all along. So they will pass new laws or remove older ones holding up their bogus “studies” as to why they claim they have to take action. Progressives the world over are sick, sick human beings.
