Tom Arnold’s Appearance on ‘The View’ Proves He Has No Idea What an ‘Automatic Weapon’ Is

Actor Tom Arnold. Credit: Getty Images for CMT
During ABC’s “The View” on Friday, actor Tom Arnold debated Fox News host Bill O’Reilly over President Barack Obama’s proposed gun control legislation. While O’Reilly argued gun laws should be a state issue, Arnold supported the president’s push for new federal laws, including a ban on semi-automatic rifles and universal background checks.
In supporting Obama’s gun control plans, Arnold complained about going hunting and seeing a “guy” hunting with an “automatic weapon.”
“I think the guy is a moron,” he added.
The only problem? The “assault rifles” Obama wants to ban are nothing more than semi-automatic firearms. In other words, just like with a semi-automatic pistol, a semi-automatic rifle can only fire as fast as a person can pull the trigger. One example would be the frequently mentioned civilian-available AR-15. These rifles do, however, offer the option of higher capacity magazines.
Automatic weapons, like the M-16 used by the military, have been very strictly regulated in the United States and are extremely difficult to acquire by civilians. In that sense, Arnold is right. Anyone who goes hunting with a military-style machine gun — that they almost certainly acquired illegally — is indeed a “moron.”
According to federal law, any person who knowingly possesses or manufactures any machine gun, fully automatic firearm or any part designed or intended exclusively to use in such weapon is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. It’s been that way since the 1980s.
“I’m from a rural area. I am a sportsman. I am a gun owner and you don’t need some hot firepower like that – like that kind of firepower,” Arnold said on “The View” Friday, seemingly referring to semi-automatic rifles or “assault weapons.”
Many responsible gun owners would argue that part of being a “responsible” gun owner is knowing what the law says about firearms. Not only so you are knowledgeable, but also so you never violate any of the current laws on the books.
And while Arnold says the U.S. needs additional “rules and regulations” for guns, perhaps he should learn about the ones we already have. Now, there is always the possibility that Arnold misspoke, and should that be the case this story will be updated. However, given the fact that the panel was specifically discussing Obama’s gun control proposals, which make no mention of “automatic weapons,” that seems like a stretch.
Watch Arnold’s appearance on “The View” below via ABC/Mediaite:
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. It’s easy to slam people on the other side, but we should show more respect… even for people we think are massively wrong. Some of them stop in here. It makes a bad impression, and they tune us out when we just insult them. We do not expect to change their minds, and we are talking mostly among ourselves. Still, we can be more courteous. Insults do not harm our opponents, but they can demean ourselves.

I doubt that very many Hollywierd types could hit a 3 foot target from 10 feet. They all live in fantasyland and to them, guns are just movie props, not something that anyone should have to hunt or protect their homes and families.

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 9:43pmActually, SONOFGALT, the AR-15/M4/M-16 all fire a 5.56mm round. Essentially a jacketed .22 round of varying weights from under 50 grains to over 70. Many later models have a twist of 1 revolution per 7 inches of barrel length that give heavy bullets a much more stable flight path over longer ranges(out to 600+ meters). Earlier models of the M-16 had 1 in 14 barrel twist which made bullets much more vunerable to tumbling. My Mini-14 has a 1 in 10 twist which allows for firing heavier bullets with much greater range.
Still, all bullets will tumble or fragment if they hit something solid like a tree or bone. The same could be said of a 30.06. A single 180 grain bullet is much more likely to take down a moose than a 55 grain JHP. It would be more likely to wound than kill, which was the original design intent of Eugene Stoner, who created the M-16. The tumbling wound effect was an unforseen element.

That would include bloody/gory Hollyweird. Case in point just read or listen to the socialist/communist drible they daily subject the American People to. If one of these “birds” has ever been of member or fellow traveler of a subversive group, such as, Communit Party USA, that would be good to know and go a long way in understanding why they say what they say and do, what they do. . He needs to be reminded that the 2nd Amendment isn’t about hunting, but about the rights of the people to defense against a tyrannical gov’t, so he misidentified the moron unless he was carrying a mirror while hunting.
Reilly is wrong about this being a state issue; states should not be allowed to enjoy the right to be creative about the application of Constitutional rights. If we choose to apply the Constitution that way, then we would be forced to acknowledge that the Civil War was fought for the wrong reasons and secessionism is allowed.

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 11:48amI was with you until that last paragraph. So secession is not allowed? Gee, I thought several states did secede, which was followed by an illegal war on those states, which was followed by those states being REadmitted to the union by means of holding a gun to their heads. I don’t recall our founding fathers asking permission to secede from England. I thought it was more of a Declaration.

I believe that Tom is so eager to speak that he doesn’t think about what he’s saying. If he sat down and thought about it for a minute, he would probably realize that the hunter he saw didn’t have “hot firepower” after all. Although, on the same show he was talking about waking up with the sleep apnea breathing mask on his face, and when trying to take it off rapidly, he broke his nose. So maybe he really is an idiot.
