Tom Brokaw: It’s ‘Far-Reaching’ to Think You Need Guns to Fight Back Against the Government

Tom Brokaw

AP

NBC’s Tom Brokaw said Thursday it’s “far-reaching” to think the American people need guns to fight back against the government.

Brokaw said on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports” that one of the main arguments pro-gun advocates cite — that the Second Amendment is meant to protect against a tyrannical government — is pretty outlandish.

He said he agrees with retired Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal who supports “serious action” to curb gun violence and said military-grade weaponry doesn’t belong in civilian hands.

“The response to that was, ‘I have to keep my weapon because the government’s going to come and try to take it away from me, and I have to be able to fight back when that happens,’” Brokaw said. “Well that’s the most far-reaching thing you can possibly imagine.”

He continued, “If we get to a stage where storm troopers show up on your doorstep, it’s about a lot more guns, by the way, it’s anarchy in this country.”

..you don’t think that we have to kill our sons, daughters, spouses, neighbors when they come to get our guns and/or kill us is “far reaching”?…unlike other nations we have systems developed to protect our God given rights so that we need NOT kill each other. We need to respect the ENTIRE Constitution, not only the 2nd Amendment. Will your children follow an illegal, immoral order ? If so, the 2nd amend is the least of your problems. You need 20 round clips to kill the police when they come for your 20 round clip..yea,that’s pretty straight forward thinking…the separation of powers, judicial , legislative, executive, due process etc etc..all to NOT have shoot outs…and your afraid you won’t get to kill cops…”far reaching”..a bit…

Also Katrina where the government illegally confiscated the citizen’s weapons. This government has and will attack it’s citizens, it has proven time and again.

Except for a few here and there, most journalists are at their core a cowardly bunch. They wield public shame as a club to beat their opponents and ruin their lives. When really cornered they’ll play the victim/righteous martyr role pretty well.

They have no understanding of history, and of the nature of power. If we let them they will help usher in an age of hell on Earth. An age of pure misery and evil.

At least Ill die knowing I did all I could to preserve the little freedoms we still have today under this dictatorship. They don’t know what bloodshed is. When they come for the people’s weapons you will see alot more blood shed. Im not going to be a sitting duck like the jews were during WWII. Do we need to be able to protect ourselves from gov’t?
That’s what the 2nd Amendment is all about.

And how about “Miranda Rights”-yes, to defend oneself from over-zealous gov’t prosecutors. You have the right to remain silent, anything you say CAN AND WILL be used against you in court: a right to an atty if you can’t afford an atty, one will be provided to you-all to defend you from gov’t.

We don’t need guns to fight back against the Government?

Tell that to our founding fathers and those that fought and died during the American Revolution. Looked like they needed all the guns they were able to muster, don’t you think?

Tell that to the south, when they had to fight against the union. They needed those guns to fight back, they may have lost, but at least they had a chance to actually FIGHT for what they believe in.

That is just in American history alone. There are hundreds, if not thousands of examples throughout history (even before guns!) where Government turned on their people, for one reason or another.

Our founding fathers did not want that to happen to America, and they knew the only way was to insure the people will always have the means to FIGHT back!

If we wait until the storm troopers at our doors in order to see the necessity of having the means to fight back (gun) then it’s obviously too late.

The naivety on the left is beyond comprehension. What world do they live in? One of the reasons our country hasn’t been overrun by dictators or foreign enemies is because of the large number of gun owners amongst our citizenry. With the growing number of terrorists spreading all over the world, giving up your guns would be committing suicide.

Furthermore Mr. Brokaw, unless you have a crystal ball, you have no way of knowing that some ideologue in Washington won’t try to take over our country. Maybe not tomorrow or 10 years from now, but it is more likely to happen if Americans aren’t armed than if they are.

Americans — NEVER EVER EVER GIVE UP YOUR GUNS!!!!

Maybe he should ask a few of the holocaust survivors just how “Far-Reaching” the concept of fighting against your government really is. the point of bearing arms is to ensure that we don’t ever have to endure such a thing. take away our “military-grade weapons”(I lmfao every time I hear that as a description) and our upper hand, or the lack-there-of, becomes more like impossible.

Seven days after the 9/11 attack military grade anthrax was sent to NBC News not far from Tom Brokaw’s office. The anthrax was sent to ABC, CBS, NY Post as well as the National Enquirer. Someone in the Government or employed by the government was sending a warning. After this attack, the news departments accepted the government narrative on 9/11 and the Patriot Act.

I believe that you had better sit down for some reflection and realize that the Second Amendment ensures that all the others are safeguarded. I would especially ask you to reflect on the plight of the Jews under Hitler, the tens of millions slaughtered by Stalin and the one hundred million killed by Mao in China. T”he best thing that could happen to America over the next 6 months is to round up all the traitors running the National Media and the producers of Hollywood filth and have them executed for treason.

“If that were to happen we may have a shot at survival.”

Eliminating these dregs is the ONLY WAY we can have a chance at survival.

Actually I’m truly surprised someone or some group hasn’t moved on them by now.

Independent4233: Well I mostly say that in jest but it is absolutely true.

The problem is that the people do not even understand how dire their situation is. .They do not understand that their country has already been stolen and they certainly do not know who the perps are..

I’ve tried to point out the obvious but even among conservatives they simply do not care to receive the truth therefore there will be no taking the country back and there will be no hope for the future.

But if Conservatives were to embrace the truth then rounding up those behind our National Media and the producers of filthy from on high would be the first course of business and it would provide us an opportunity for a future.

Who knows maybe we eventually get to that point but right now everyone has their football, food on the table and little money in the bank.

Can one even imagine a Media which praises our Founding Fathers and our Constitution? How many would fall over dead if they heard sincere praise of our Founders coming from our Media?

It’s really hillarious.. We are under an occupation people and it’s not pretty. Please wake up!

I can’t figure out if Liberals are ignorant about history and naive, or if they’re evil and calculating. Someone should give Tom Brokaw a refresher course about the history of Nazi Germany and teach him how Germany went from being the greatest, freest, most powerful nation on earth to gassing its citizens in 7 years. Then someone should give him a refresher course about the history of the Soviet Union and remind him how oppressive that Liberal dystopia was. Are these Liberals really so stupid that they just don’t get it, or do they get it and just think America would be better under a Hitler or a Stalin?

Vietnam, Afghanistan in the 19th century against the British and in the 1980′s against the Russians and yes, today against us are all example’s of small, rag tag groups besting powerful armies. Oh, by the way, I should add our own country in the 1770′s and 80′s against the British, then the most powerful military force on earth. It’s funny how those with no military experience, and indeed who are terrified of guns are always the ones to tell everyone else that there is no need to arm yourselves against tyrants, because tyrants are just too mean and tough.

It’s not a matter of the government showing up at your door, at least not yet, but an armed citizenry is a deterrent to government overreach. It’s much less likely for them to show up at your door for any trivial reason if they know you have the right to ( and possibility of ) armed resistance. Once they disarm the populace, then all bets are off.

You may have missed my point, deterrents was what I was trying to establish, both foreign and domestic ( as was stated above ), not exactly successful armed resistance. That would require an armed populace in addition to state militias; national guard and/or commandeering of federal resources at a state or local level. It’s not impossible that resistance would go that far, look at the recent declarations by state governments and local authorities, in addition to defections from the federal forces due to the violation of their oath to uphold the constitution.

If only 1 out of 10 gun owners revolted against the government (meaning 90% say, “I’m sitting this out”), and there are 80 million plus gun owners in the United States, that is a trained army of 8 million soldiers/snipers/partisans. Trained meaning quite a few former military, all very good practiced marksmen (not a goat herder picking up his first rifle). Against an armed populace, the government loses.

Germany declared war on the U.S. directly after the U.S. declared war on Japan after Pearl Harbor (Dec. 7, 1941) VE Day was May 8, 1945. Keaton,
you have a Constitutional Right to your opinion, as do we all.

Likewise, we all have a Right to keep and bear arms. But the Founders gave us the 2nd Amendment to defend the 1st Amendment, and they said so over and over and over in their writings. If you, or anyone else, doesn’t think it could happen and therefore see no need for firearms, great, that’s YOUR right!

Just don’t expect everyone to see this YOUR way.

As to the might of the U.S. Military, until the 2nd Amendment is over turned and ALL the court cases are run out at the SCOTUS level, it would be illegal for the military to try to take the guns, and I don’t see the Pentagon passing out Illegal Orders. That of course is also covered under posse comitatus too, as taking the guns would be a law enforcement item.

Not to mention the fact that the GRAND majority of folks in the military are on that right-wing, gun owning side of things. I see them siding WITH the gun people, not against them.

I’m more concerned about the hundreds, or perhaps thousands of insane militant jihadists that sneaked across our unprotected southern border along side the other TWENTY MILLION foreign nationals that have entered our soverign nation ILLEGALLY and unchallenged.

I’m also more concerned about the armed mobs of anarchists and looters that inevitably show up after a national disaster like Katrina or Super Storm Sandy. Since it’s impossible for the police to “protect” citizens during these events, it’s every man for himself and I’d rather be the one with superior firepower to protect my family, my home and my business.

We may not need guns in everyday life, but when I need one I want one! Many, many years ago driving across Arizona, a guy kept speeding up and getting in front of my car and slowing down. After a couple of times I realized he was doing it on purpose. The next time he moved along side of my car, I pointed my pistol at him, and man did he make tracks up the road.
The second time 3 of us girls were in a cabin in the mountains in Calif. and after we blew out the lights and went to bed, we were awaken by someone looking into the window (moonlight night), I grabbed my pistol and saw the guy running away, so I pointed up into the sky and shot one time to let him know he better not come back.
The third time I needed a gun, in Texas, some guy pulled the pass & slow down on a nearly deserted highway. My son was reclined in his seat and I had my pistol in the locked glove box. The guy had lots of bumper stickers about sex and I was scared to stop and unlock the glove box because my hands were shaking so bad. Finally, I saw a turn off to a rest stop and slowed down enough until the guy passed the turnoff and I pulled off, stopped the car and opened the glove box to get out my pistol as I half expected him to turn back into the exit lane, but he didn’t.
These were times a woman needs protection more than a can of mace, to make a point to the idiots who think all women are looking for a fun time.
The gov. needs to spend more time balancing our budget, less time about guns.

“TOM BROKAW: IT’S ‘FAR-REACHING’ TO THINK YOU NEED GUNS TO FIGHT BACK AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT”
True for, at least, two major reasons:
    (1) Small arms in and of themselves cannot make the difference in a revolution–either there are sufficient people behind the revolution, in which case the government is simply TOO small and would incur TOO much cost to stop them all, or the movement wouldn’t have enough people behind it and would fail. Small arms won’t make any difference in that calculation when the national government currently has the capability of killing EVERYONE on Earth if it so desired…several times over.
    (2) Alluded to in point one, the government CANNOT control a sufficiently large portion of the population that is defiant simply because of cost–it would be suicide to the government’s own power (for what is a government without a nation, the source of its power?) if it took an extreme murderous route, and if it tried, as it does currently, to exert control through subtler means than outright violence and mass murder then it would have to expend FAR more resources than brutal but effective violence. It cannot exert enough control for in either case it is dependent upon that which it seeks to control FOR its power. So it will either destroy itself (and possibly everything along with it–the ultimate Pyrrhic victory) OR it will simply fail if enough people have the will to oppose it.

Disagree sir. Small arms would make a difference. You don’t cede any advantage to an opponent. The Bill of Rights makes it very clear that ANY government can become the enemy of the people. History teaches that this analysis is accurate. AmeriKa is marching towards tyranny, thus it is logical to slowly weaken the ability of millions upon millions to cause a revolution.

The top reason, IMO, to preserve the 2nd Amendment is in r/t self defense. If each of us has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness… it follows that we MUST have the right to defend ourselves from criminals. And small arms against criminals often levels the playing field.

AmeriKa is coming, and Owebama is an influential acolyte of this new order.

Small arms leads to gaining heavy arms. Without small arms, there would be zero chance. Ask the Vietcong, the Taliban, etc…how useful small arms were to their movements. The cuban revolution was almost entirely small arms.

      Third Archon,

If I remember you are gay. Have you heard of the Pink Pistols?

“The Pink Pistols are a gay gun rights organization in the United States and Canada. Their mottos are “Pick on someone your own caliber” and “Armed gays don’t get bashed.”"

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Pistols

As a gay person I would think that you would want to be safe. With demographics changing would you be safe from Muslims for example?

The Left always wants the U.S. to be look like Europe, because they are supposedly more culturally advanced. Well, Bruce Bauer writes about Europe extensively. Sometimes it seems that what happens there (like California) happens here. So why don;t you read what Mr. Bawer thinks about the changes in Europe. Mr. Bawer is gay, but I think he is more realistic about things than you are.

I agree….remember at some point, there will have to be building and house to house. Small arms are advantage. The US government could not handle tactical capabilities to handle say 20 million people…..not even a million people. You would not have the military leadership invested in this either.
What will happen is to paint certain segments as “extremists” and thus enemy combatants. They will pick unknowing Christopher Stevens type martyrs (like census takers), and couple them with a true extremists, when all heck breaks loose, they will have public support for the arrest etc. of the enemy combatants. Its already laid out.

“If we get to a stage where storm troopers show up on your doorstep, it’s about a lot more guns, by the way, it’s anarchy in this country.”

So wait…if stormtroopers show up on my doorstep, it isn’t about the guns they are trying to confiscate, but rather anarchy?

Would that NOT be the reason to have guns? To protect myself in an anarchy state?

According to government investigators, John F. Kennedy was assassinated with a cheap, mail-order Italian imported bolt-action rifle which had to be reloaded and was known by experts to be less than precision sited.
The Mannlicher-Carcano is hardly “military grade”. In fact, it is probably not even “deer hunter” grade.
Everyone knows “military grade assault weapons” are just words and low hanging fruit and that the eventual goal is all guns.
Hopefully, we are also learning that you can’t compromise with a progressive, because they keep moving the Overton Window.

The only place that was undamaged during the Rodney King riots was Korea-town.Why? because they stood guard in, around, and on top of their buildings with GUNS. That was anarchy on a citywide level.
