Tom Brokaw: It’s ‘Far-Reaching’ to Think You Need Guns to Fight Back Against the Government

AP
NBC’s Tom Brokaw said Thursday it’s “far-reaching” to think the American people need guns to fight back against the government.
Brokaw said on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports” that one of the main arguments pro-gun advocates cite — that the Second Amendment is meant to protect against a tyrannical government — is pretty outlandish.
He said he agrees with retired Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal who supports “serious action” to curb gun violence and said military-grade weaponry doesn’t belong in civilian hands.
“The response to that was, ‘I have to keep my weapon because the government’s going to come and try to take it away from me, and I have to be able to fight back when that happens,’” Brokaw said. “Well that’s the most far-reaching thing you can possibly imagine.”
He continued, “If we get to a stage where storm troopers show up on your doorstep, it’s about a lot more guns, by the way, it’s anarchy in this country.”

Exactly. And if it’s anarchy in this country, an armed citizenry has a fighting chance.

Posted on January 18, 2013 at 6:58pmKEATON get a rip… As with most freakin’ liberals you have no concept of the military history of the globe. Hint: who won in Viet Nam? The guys with the carpet bombing, helicopters massive artillery, close air support on call? or those stinkin’ peasants running around in pajamas? How about Afreakinstan? they kicked out the British, the Russians, and now it’s a stalemate and we’ll be taking our toys and heading home. You don’t need ballistic missles when you outnumber the other force 100:1…

Posted on January 18, 2013 at 6:56pmTB is such a liberal elitist…maybe he doesn’t need a gun with all his money but the rest of us want to exercise our rights. TB knows history…gun banning leads to tyranny, history proves this. Furthermore, it leads to unpreparedness…look at Great Brittan in 1940…the NRA in the U.S.A. had to send them weapons because their island nation didn’t have weapons in the hands of law abiding citizens, and they left all their military weapons on the beach at Dunkirk. I will keep my guns; you keep your stupid ideas.

Posted on January 18, 2013 at 6:55pmHow can Andrea Mitchell head be so big and filled with absolutely nothing?? These left wing morons piss me off. They walk around with armed guards but look down their noses at law abiding citizens own weapons that are rifles. There is no such thing as a assault weapon. They are semi automatic rifles, not assault weapons. If you use that logic anything that you can use to assault someone can be a “assault weapons.”

Posted on January 18, 2013 at 6:49pmKeaton33…as usual your shortsightedness is profound. The whole military of the US government is not going to disarm an American populace. The military is the least of the problem because they will be “fighting each other” the military like the civilian populace have people who would love to see the POTUS take a leap and others worship him. What about the vets, retired military and people who were in and separated. You think these people forgot all they know. Do you think a bunch of marines are going to take a town with some helicopters and and M1 and a M60. The US military couldn’t beat the Vietnamese because of guerrilla warfare, imagine an armed American populace fighting a guerilla war, the military would be devastated because they would be too widely spaced. It’s a big country, sure the urban areas are going but that is no loss anyway, after all the urban centers are gone and the people the problem is solved anyway.

Posted on January 18, 2013 at 6:47pmIt may not necessarily be to protect us from their physical actions, but to remove them from office because they have stepped over their Constitutional boundary Tommy. They have already done that for many, many years, they should be getting a little nervous. Americans can only tolerate so much of their freedoms being taken away Tom, before they have to do what our Forefathers gave us the right to do.

agenda. Yes, thats exactly why we have the second ammendment, to fight

Posted on January 18, 2013 at 6:43pmReally? You cannot imagine a time when people are trying to break into your house to get your TV or your food, or your water or whatever you have that they want? I don’t expect that to happen, but I can certainly imagine it. And I might not care so much about protecting myself, but if you think this little ol’ lady would ever see her children or grandchildren threatened — well, then you are just as foolish as Mr. Brokaw.

Posted on January 18, 2013 at 6:33pmYeh right nothing to fear from our government this administration arming the Mexican cartels with Fast and Furious that resulted in the death of several border agents and 100′s of Mexican citizens, and Benghazi with the deaths of four Americans while “we have your back”. Our forefathers, and not as Danny Glover stated at a college campus that the second amendment was to protect salve owners, lived through tyranny by their governments and had nothing but rocks, shovels, pitchforks to defend themselves. They never wanted to put the citizens of the United States to have to worry about getting a tyrannical ruler – what is the saying the best defense is a good offense. Mainstream media Brokow included enviserate Romney – he didn’t pay taxes, felon, murder, lied about China manufacturing jeeps, contributors that are shelters 200 billion in the caymen islands are using the tax code properly. By the way Jeep/cadillac are being manufacturered in China.
Lets all sit in a circle and sing kumbaya with the terrorist and everything will be right with the world. What did I hear in Obama’s speech a week or so ago, he told us what his plan is and we should just follow him (blindly of course).
Whoppee – “Communism sounds good on paper” Well you go girl and live under it, if you think it is utopia.

Oh Tom you just don’t understand.
I don’t have a weapon to keep the government from taking it, I have a weapon to fight back against the government if they become oppressive.
Without weapons we are not citizens but subjects.
Try looking up the difference between the two.
