‘A Step in the Right Direction’: Obama’s Gun Control Proposals Get Support From the Vatican

AP
VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican praised President Barack Obama’s proposals for curbing gun violence, saying they are a “step in the right direction.”
The Vatican’s chief spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Saturday that 47 religious leaders have appealed to members of the U.S. Congress “to limit firearms that are making society pay an unacceptable price in terms of massacres and senseless deaths.”
“I am with them,” Lombardi said, in an editorial carried on Vatican Radio, lining up the Vatican’s moral support in favor of firearm limits.
`’The initiatives announced by the American administration for limiting and controlling the spread and use of weapons are certainly a step in the right direction,” Lombardi said.
Obama is trying to rally support for reinstating a ban on assault weapons and requiring background checks on all gun sales. He faces stiff opposition in the U.S. Congress and from powerful gun lobbies.
Considering that Americans possess `’about 300 million firearms,” Lombardi said, `’people cannot fool themselves that it is enough to limit the number and use (of guns) to impede in the future horrendous massacres like that of Newtown that shook the conscience of America and world, as well as that of children and adults. `’
He was referring to the Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school where 20 children and six adults were killed by a sole attacker last month.
`’But it would be worse to be satisfied with words” of condemnation alone, Lombardi said. And while massacres are `’carried out by unbalanced or hate-driven persons, there is no doubt that they are carried out with firearms,” the Vatican spokesman said.
Lombardi renewed Vatican appeals for disarmament and encouragement for measures to fight “the production, commerce and contraband of all types of arms,” an industry fueled by `’enormous economic and power interests.”

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 7:27pmDo we care if the Vatican approves of the gun control measures? This fake religion will reign in the New World Order. I am a Catholic and I am sick of the Catholic church and the pope telling us what we should do. They have lost many christians because of what they have done (priests allowed to become pedophiles with no consequence) . They need to go back to reading the bible. Our constitution was written to prevent other people from taking advantage of us. The founders knew that the government could over reach it’s power. They also read the bible and were guided on the teachings of the Lord. Before making laws the congress would consult with a priest who knew the teachings of the bible. Because it has been removed, our country is at risk.
People with guns hope they will NEVER have to kill a person. They don’t own guns hoping to kill. It simply gives them peace of mind, knowing that if some crisis were to happen they would be safe. That is our right to live in peace and the pursuit of happiness. You can’t count on the police or government to protect you. That was evident in Katrina. They disarmed everyone. Those people were left to fend for themselves and many were easy targets because they did not have a gun.I don’t want that to happen to my family. You can be sure the bad guys will have guns and they will use them to steal and kill. They won’t care about the gun laws. If they can get drugs, they can also get illegal guns.

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 7:02pmIn reply to SendTheMeteors,
If believing in the Constitution and America as founded makes me part of your fringe right, I’m honored.
You are ignorant, most liberals are, if you think most NRA members agree with anything Obama, or the progrressive liberal democrats believe about guns and the 2nd Ammendment.
The failed liberal democrat programs of the past 60 years is the root cause of the morally bankrupt society that America has become. Not the NRA, not NRA members, not the 2nd Ammendent, not responsible American citizens who happen to own guns.
LIBERALISM is what has ruined America.
You are obviously one of the 47%.

Instead, how about soundly condemning our government for their rabid support of abortion that snuffs out 4000 innocent lives a day.

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 5:34pmJesus was never God. He was only a Messenger of God. He had mother Mary, but he had no father. Jesus was a man, and a man cannot be God. Jesus was Messiah , but he was not saviour. How can he be saviour, when he himself could not save his own life when jews came to kill him on the cross. It was all St. Paul’s innovation, calling jesus as Saviour or Son of God.
As per Thomas coyale, Trinity is an insertion in Bible at a later date.

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 6:08pmYou are showing your ignorance. Read John 14 to see what Jesus said about himself. Also, read about the Transfiguration, And if the Jews killed Jesus, they certainly didn’t do a very good job of keeping him dead. You can’t see clearly because you are a wounded anti-christian zealot spewing hate all over the One who died to save you from yourself.

Posted on January 21, 2013 at 1:46pmSpot on. Create as much division on the basis of religion as possible. Pander to the hate generated by the Reformation. Plant the seed that Catholics really should arm themselves for protection from Protestants and vice versa. Saul A’s tactics work in any senario.

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 4:49pmSomeone should mention to him that when one of our enumerated rights is infringed, they all become less secure. Does he favor weakening the protections around the freedom of religion? The slippery slope has already been slid with regard to expanding federal power beyond what was authorized in the constitution. Will we wait to see how far our rights can be stripped away as well ?

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 4:19pmThat’s what he should say. He is a messenger of peace, brotherhood, and forgiveness but he is not an American, he is protected by a mercenary army that’s just as well equipped as any other army in the world, he was a crewman on German AAA as a teenager so he know what protecting his home is like, and he does a lot of talking about peace and love but hasn’t effected violence in some of the mostly Catholic countries in Africa. (Check the stats with the Church’s census by country to find out which ones). By the way, I’m Catholic and had 14 years of Catholic education.

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 4:16pmIf we lived in a world where people were civilized, then the possession of weapons only by the police might be a good idea. The pope means well, but he is infallible only in matters of faith and morals.
He may very well not be aware of the fact that the man in our Oval Office is a Muslim enemy, intent on destroying the ability of the people to defend themselves against his tyranny.
The mantra of real Americans is: “Molon Labe” “Come and get them”.
