Notre Dame star linebacker Manti Te’o said he had absolutely no role in the bizarre dead girlfriend hoax, though acknowledged that it was “crazy” to be in a relationship with someone he never met.
Speaking to the media for the first time since the story broke Wednesday, Te’o told ESPN in an off-camera interview that he was duped into believing his girlfriend, “Lennay Kekua,” had died of leukemia, and that the perpetrator behind her online persona has since apologized to him.
“No, never,” Te’o told ESPN. “I wasn’t faking it. I wasn’t part of this.”
But even though the Heisman Trophy runner-up said he had no involvement in the hoax, he said he “tailored” his stories to make people think the two had actually met — something that never happened.
“I even knew that it was crazy that I was with somebody that I didn’t meet,” Te’o said. “People find out this girl who died that I was so invested in, I didn’t meet her as well so I kind of tailored my stories to have people think that yeah, he met her before she passed away, so people didn’t think I was some crazy dude.”
Te’o said Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, a 22-year-old acquaintance in California, called him Wednesday and confessed to the prank, the same day Deadspin.com published a massive expose on one of the “defining story lines” of the 2012 college football season.
“Two guys and a girl are responsible for the whole thing,” Te’o said, though said he doesn’t know who all they are. “According to Ronaiah, Ronaiah’s one.”
Te’o said he got a call from someone claiming to be Lennay Kekua on Dec. 6, three months after she supposedly died. Still, he said he still wasn’t entirely sure it had all been a hoax until the story broke Wednesday. He said the Dec. 6 caller had wanted to rekindle their relationship. Te’o said he said no: “My Lennay died on September 12″
“When (people) hear the facts, they’ll know,” Te’o told ESPN. “They’ll know that there is no way that I could be part of this.”

Jan. 19, 2013 at 12:40pm2 days ago? I thought the Notre Dame AD said he came to them Dec 26 with the revelation that it was a hoax.

Jan. 19, 2013 at 4:37pmI think the entire situation is shady. Why would Manti T’eo not try to clear his name in the beginning when the people of this country formulated their own conclusions and theories as to why he ran with this hoax and took it this far. I do believe the amount of attention the story has garnered is a bit ridiculous, but he has yet to give an HONEST interview since the news broke. How could the guy NOT know what was going on if the person who made up his girl was one of his buddies. There is so much speculation still; Homosexuality? Attention Starved? Clueless? We may never know. I will say this; I have never and will never look for a relationship on the internet, absolutely ridiculous.

Jan. 19, 2013 at 10:53amThe reason this is a story, like Armstrong, identity theft, scams, hoaxes, all the way to the present administration and the takeover of all society, it is endemic as to how a culture is dying. The Internet is 75-80% total nonsense, and our cultrure is being led by it. The ultimate is how the current administration and their “everything that should be up is down and everything that should be down is up” mentality is controlling the sheeple in this country. Just another example of how a culture dies.

Jan. 19, 2013 at 10:10amForget about Te’o for a moment. Would someone explain to me why Lennay Kekus would talk with Te’o every night for three years about love and it was all a hoax? After a couple of weeks she would
get tired of the ordeal and tell Te’o of the hoax, Three people playing a hoax for three years isn’t possible. It would be easy to check the phone records too. And why after a week wouldn’t Teo’s want to see her by skype. Isn’t Teo from California and in the summer would go see her when he
is home. I surmise Te’o is in on the complete hoax from the beginning and everyone just get carried away with it and didn’t know how to exit. His story has more holes than swiss cheese.

Perhaps when they realized how invested he was, they couldn’t bring themselves to tell him it was fake, or even to fake break up. Finally, they decided they just had to make her fake die.

Or was it a form of a beard?
Nonetheless, this is a very important story. Because the incompetence of the media is laid bare for all to see.
But is anyone paying attention?

This is a new propaganda arm for the Obama radicals ” to stir support for the president’s priorities ” like immigration , guns and climate change ! Separate from the Democratic Party organizations. And they can accept ” unlimited contributions without disclosing donors.” This man’s henchmen are such liars and hypocrites . Yes, our Chicago radicals are separate all right…..

Jan. 19, 2013 at 9:32amSo he would like us to believe he is not a scoundrel – just a gullible idiot. Sorry pal, I’m not playing the same role and believing you. And for the record, when you are “with” someone only virtually on the internet, you are not with them at all. I think you understood that from the outset. This maybe wasn’t your idea, but you went along with it.

Jan. 19, 2013 at 2:55pmIt does, but I had done the same so not to be judged. I was naive, developed a relationship with a person on the internet over long period of time. We ended up talking, emailing and so on, it was actually a quite pleasurable relationship in that, a great deal is left to the imagination. I met the girl through a Christian web site, we read the bible together, prayed a great deal together, and found a deep spiritual connection with Jesus as our cornerstone. When I told people I was moving to Australia to be with her, I had told some that we had met before, mainly because I just didn’t want to hear it. I had my mind made up … Unfortunately, you can’t learn if the person has severe mental disorders, such as paranoid personality disorder, via the web, phone, e-mail. I had trusted in my faith that it would all work out, but it fell apart .. This was a umber of years ago, 2007, and was less commen then, but I could understand why this kid did what he did. Society can be a real burden on a person when you are in the spotlight. The kid may have a hard time dating, I know many athletes lie that, and this was a safe way for him to get to know somebody. Surprisingly, relations can become quite intimate when you are writing each other and talking a lot. He was probably going home for Christmas, and this chick knew the gig was up. Listening to him talk to her, it was religious component he shared with her. He’s young like I was as well, back then , ego and pride was powerful.

1. ND’s return to glory was a big story, as they have a nationwide following.
2. Te’o’ was the start of the team, unusual for an inside linebacker.
3. The personal tragedy of grandma and, “the love of my life” dying on the same day was compelling (at least to the media).
4. Some feel he (and ND) played up the story to garner favor with Heisman voters.
5. The media never fact-checked anything about him or his/her story, because they like him. (Sound familiar?)

Jan. 19, 2013 at 10:50amThe reason this is a story is it is one more endemic reason of where our society has come. The Internet is between 75-80% TOTAL NONSENSE. And it is leading our lives. Sports hoaxes like Teo and Armstrong, Identity theft, scams, the lowest common denominators, all the way up to the current political landscape where what should be up is down, what is down is up, like everything liberals and this admin. do is totally terrible for this country, but most people go along with it like the sheeple they are.
