O’Reilly Spars With Atheist Who Doesn’t Want Obama to Use Bible During Inauguration: ‘You Are in the Minority…Does That Matter at All to You?’

Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly on Friday clashed with an atheist activist who doesn’t want President Barack Obama to swear on the Bible during his inauguration.
Andrew Seidel, a member of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, declared America is a “nation of laws” and the use of the Bible is inappropriate at a national event. The organization previously circulated a petition to get Obama to abandon the tradition.
O’Reilly said the “overwhelming majority of Americans disagree” and would be furious if the president didn’t use the Bible. Obama will in fact swear on two Bibles — ones once owned by Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. — during Monday’s ceremony.
Seidel countered that the “demographics are shifting rapidly,” saying his organization now has 19,000 members and that 19 percent of the country considers itself non-religious.
“Even non-religious people don’t want to boot the Bible — especially Abraham Lincoln’s and Martin Luther King’s — out of the inauguration,” O’Reilly said. “You are in the minority. The folks want the ceremony to include the Bible. Does that matter at all to you?”
Seidel said the “Bill of Rights exists to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority.”
“We are a nation of laws, and neither our laws nor our morality are founded on the Bible,” Seidel said. “Religion gets its morality from us, not the other way around.”

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 2:52pmIt must suck to be an atheist, being all alone in this world, not knowing a higher power and the love from above that comes with it. I know the man is upstairs. I have had way too many ‘coincidences” in my life. There is no such thing as coincidence. Can you imagine, running around your whole life denying the existence of God, thinking that all of this, this entire universe, just ‘is’. What a pathetic existence these cretins lead. I am actually quite sick of their asses. They must be driven out at the first opportunity, along with all the other vermin.

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 2:58pmThose things this atheist mentions as flaws in the bible are things that have slowly been removed from man’s culture by the things written in the bible. “Where the Spirit of the Lord IS there IS liberty”. God new what is already part of man’s culture in the times even before any books of the bible was written. Man has freewill and therefore God deals with man and his reluctance to change for it could not be an instant one. The bible shows a record that God slowly familiarize man with His nature and allows man to slowly make a transition by his own choice. We do not take the bible dogmatically but with God’s understanding not our own. Dogmas of theologians are man’s nature and so are conclusive stances of the Atheists.

As an agnostic it doesn’t bother me that they swear on a Bible, but it is ridiculous. Anyone who doesn’t stone people to death for working on Sundays isn’t following the “morality” of the Bible. The thinking of the Enlightenment figures has impacted our Republic far more than the dogma of the Bible has.

He’s not really an atheist He’s a homosexual activist who thinks if he can reduce religion to an insignificant influence it will help usher in his all-inclusinve rainbow utopia that that he perceives will accept homosexuals as just another “lifestyle,” rather than a severe mental illness.
If Christianity accepted homosexuality he wouldn’t be an “atheist.”
Although Islam is gaining in numbers and strength here, I seriously doubt you will see him openly challenge them, though, because he knows if he does he’ll be decorating a lampost somewhere.

I can’t tell if you’re willfully obtuse or simply a moron. You write as if the founding of the United States occurred in an idea vacuum, like an 18th century philosophical version of a single-format radio station, on which the selections on tap were simply all Enlightenment, all the time.
Much of the original framework of our country is based on enlightenment ideas, but the part you leave out is that it was filtered through a extremely powerful Christian lens.
Shall we talk about how there were more Christian Bible translators who signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution than there were, say, deists (the historically ignorant atheist label of choice for the founding fathers), or shall we talk about how often the Bible is referenced in the communication between these men during the Revolutionary period?
There is little doubt that while borrowing heavy from Enlightenment ideas, America was founded by Christians, and intended to operate within a predominantly Christian framework, albeit one in which there was no government-operated religion a la The Church of England. The modern take on the separation clause is a bastardization of the original intent.
Comparatively speaking, we’ve seen what kind of event occurs when you base political revolution on Enlightenment philosophy not having been filtered through a heavily Christian worldview…it was called the French Revolution, and it was atheistic, horrifying, and barbaric.

Posted on January 20, 2013 at 3:11am@FREEDOMLOVER – I would refrain from doing too much self-fellating. Willful ignorance and misplaced symbolism simply make powerful partners.
Obama being reelected was not as much public affirmation of his policies as it was a popularity contest between the media-anointed liberal messiah and the media-vilified rich white evil cultist. A majority of people who voted for Obama are emotionally tethered to him because of what he symbolizes; everyone else stayed home. This is how he managed to be the only president to get reelected with such a deep economic downturn, near record fuel prices, unemployment and record debt. Even Obama’s campaign management said that their strategy wouldn’t have worked for another candidate.
You seem to have forgotten that when polled, the electorate largely sides with the right on most issues, whether they realize it or not. Also, people won’t buy into yet another progressive messiah…you only get that once.
As for extremism, need we go into detail on the pervasive and often leftism that has cemented itself in government and media over the last decade and a half? I’m proud to cite endless examples. The Tea Party is simply a response to extreme leftism and fiscal irresponsibility.
FInally, supporting traditional marriage, limited government, and being rightfully skeptical of an authoritarian collective who will do just about anything for grant money is not necessarily being “anti” anything. Stop with the mindless liberal scare label

For the first part, I did NOT say that it didn’t win the election (decisively as you put it), the election was “fixed”. How do you explain no votes in a city the size of Philadelphia PA for a republican or an independent ? Some computer problem ? And that wasn’t the only city.
As for the second part, calling me Anti-gay – cretin democrats like you love to “assume” everyone that disagrees with your marxist mentality is “anti-gay”. You have absolutely “NO CLUE” how I feel on that subject, because I have never mentioned it.
As for the third part, calling me “Anti-government” has to be corrected to “any government that is violating the US Constitution”.
As for the “anti-science”….specifically what part of science are you talking about ? This is one hell of a generalization that did not make any sense …again, on your assumption.
As for the Tea Party being “the worst” as you worded them, you should take a long, hard look at the New Black Panther Party that has intimidated voters in Philadelphia for two elections and has the brass to put in print how they advocate killing white people. The Tea Party pales in comparison to those activities.
As for the “religious right” – there is another assumption on your liberal, democratic part. There is no problem with any religion or no religion, JUST DON”T LIE ABOUT IT especially if you are President of the United States of America.
Someday YOU will see what I am talking about.

Posted on January 20, 2013 at 5:47pm@KAT747 – Investigative reporters went to the districts where Obama got 100% of the vote and couldn’t find one person that voted for Romney or anyone else. These districts have always gone 99+% to the Democrats. They even interviewed the registered Republicans, most of who didn’t realize they were registered as one. There is zero evidence of any voter fraud.
@BADASHE – I’m certainly not denying there were fervent Christians amongst the founding fathers, but to say they viewed the Enlightenment thru a “very Christian lens” is simply not true – stop reading David Barton, the guy is full of you know what.
You know what? All the founding fathers, all of them, were evangelical preachers. What the hell do I care – I’m tired of this argument. Believe whatever you want – doesn’t change the fact that we are a secular government and there is a very clear seperation of church and state – the way it should be. Where do you get off calling Koran unholy? It’s not enough that you simply disagree with Muslims, but you have to degrade yourself by throwing insults. I can’t help sit back as Atheist systematically destroy your beliefs and traditions, just like Christianity did to so many religions before it. There have been plenty of good Muslims in the past to go with the bad. How about every time to try to extol the virtues of Christianity I bring up the dark ages, the inquisitions and the Salem with trials. How about I remind you that Hitler was Christian and that the KKK was and always has been a Christian organization. Even if Obama came out and said he was Muslim it wouldn’t make me hate or love him any more than I do now, it shouldn’t matter to you either. VALIANT1776 – No country in the world calls Jerusalem the capital of Israel, other than Israel. Christian parents might (or might not) name their sons Barry.
They most assuredly do not name them Barack, a bastardization of the Hebrew Baruch (Blessed). Nor do they name them Hussein, as the Prophet Muhammad named his son.
In Islam, the practice of Taqqiyah (deception) is a time-honored tradition. Naive Christians have met their Maker by the thousands, believing to the End all men are the same. They are not. Christians naively believe Muslim rites must automatically follow Christian traditions. They do not. The ring on Obama’s finger means far more than the left hand on the Bible or Quran, for it is present all the time, like the ring through the nose.

I don’t expect you to understand this, but we do have moral codes. It’s a superior moral code than the one you get from a book written in the bronze age written by desert dwellers who would have thought a wheelbarrow to be an amazing piece of technology. It’s a moral code that requires thought and empathy.

That’s because they were homosexual before they became priests. A homosexual wearing a roman collar is still a homosexual. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXB8eACUwjM
But don’t worry, if organizations like NAMBLA are successful in lobbying the APA to drop pedophilia from the DM, pedophilia will no longer be frowned upon and it will eventually become a socially accepted lifestyle and sexual orientation. State legislatures will vote on it and because we are a progressive society, the laws against pedophilia will be wiped away and pedophiles will be able to enjoy the same freedom that homosexual’s enjoy as well. They will be able to sue those who infringe on their constitutional rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Then no one can ever come down on Catholic Priests ever again because pedophilia will be legal and your comment will be obsolete. Have a nice day. :o)

Same with most Muslims I know (I work for an international company with many Muslims for Europe and Africa) as well as agnostics. It’s the haters I can’t stand. I’m not a hater of Christians, I hate the people who post ridiculous nonsense about nonchristians on here.
FYI, I also believe Islam is ridiculous. I believe that it is more dangerous than Christianity, but I also know that most Muslims ignore the more violent parts of the Koran just as most Christians ignore the more violent parts of the Bible.
And not every Arab or Muslim person in the world is somehow connected to the Muslim Brotherhood, which most conspiracy theorists on this site seem to believe.

He doesn’t hold faith for either one.
I don’t think you’ll see him swearing on the Torah though. Not for this country anyway.

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 1:45pmHow does this work? “the bible gets it’s morality from us, not the other way around” What sort of dumb ass thinking is that? Christianity is all about teaching morality. Jesus was all about morailty. Atheist are such stupid, illogical people…. This man clearly has never read the Bible. If it wasn’t for the teaching of Jesus Christ, we’d all be just like the muslims with their sick form of morality where chopping off the heads of their own people is considered moral. This guys a total idiot.

Posted on January 20, 2013 at 9:00amThe Bible was written by men. There is nothing in the Bible that couldn’t have been written by someone in the first century. This should be a red flag that perhaps it wasn’t inspired by god. Every atheist I know is a good moral person. We don’t need to get our morals from a book. We use common sense and logic.
If not believing in super natural beings, people rising from the dead, virgin births, etc, makes us “illogical” then so be it.

Posted on January 20, 2013 at 9:36amDR49, look at Christian history – just a few hundred years ago Jesus’ followers were happily burning a few hundred thousand at the stake all across Europe and a few here in the American Colonies, millions more were tortured, ostracized or otherwise persecuted. A millennium ago the Christians were fighting wars of dominance killing Jews and Muslims and beheading them. Your religion was in the same growth phase as Islam is now.
Did you know that the first group Hitler went after when he call to power in 1933 were the German Freethinkers & Atheists? The organized Freethinker movement in Sweden and Germany dates back to the middle of the 1800s by 1930 the German Freethinkers League had a membership of over a half million Germans. The League was closed down in the spring of 1933, when Hitler outlawed all atheistic and freethinking groups in Germany. Freethinkers Hall, the national headquarters of the League, was then converted to the Nazi’s office on church matters. Nazi hunter “heretic and atheists” in Poland, Yugoslavia and Scandinavian nations. Hitler hated the Atheist more than the Jew and his move against them was one of his very first actions. Hitler was primarily motivated by a wrapped version of Christian mythology and use the deity to justify his actions and rationalize his nation’s place in destiny. Read Mein Kampf, search Hitler’s speeches, he calls on the Creator just like the Founding Fathers did.

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 1:44pmThere are lies, damn lies…statistics, and then there are atheist statistics. I always love it when the intellectually dishonest godless start talking about their ever-growing numbers.
After large jumps the last decade, those who self-describe as “nones” only increased by 0.3% last year. In other words, the modern “godless” movement, not unexpected in a society making technological leaps in concurrence with financial advantages, is coming to an end. This dovetails into the historical fact that in economic turmoil, people return to God.
The rub of course is that despite claims by guys like Seidel, most of the “nones” aren’t atheists and actually believe in a higher power.

Above all, brothers, do not swear oaths by heaven, by earth, or by any other object. Instead, let your “Yes” mean yes and your “No” mean no! Otherwise, you may fall under condemnation.

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 1:33pmIsn’t the point of the swearing on a bible is that the person doing the swearing believes deeply in their religion and their oath to god and country is nationally ,politically, socially and morally binding them to the duty the people have entrusted him with even if it means death?
And since freedom of religion grants everyone their choice of religion ,the president chooses his own religious text ? Why would you swear on a Torah if you don’t believe in it ?
I bet if Obama used a koran,this man wouldn’t say a word.

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 1:31pmWow O’Reilly got schooled in this interview by ingoring the Constitution itself:
Article. II.
Section. 1.
Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:–”I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
What doesn’t isn’t clear about those words? If the President wants to put his hand on the bible and repeat the above lines, have a day, but Constitutionally God has no place in the swearing in.
On a second note O’Reilly and BARBER2 obviously don’t understand the difference between a true democracy and a constitutional republic.

Obama often omits “Creator” when speaking of our “unalienable” rights, reducing rights bestowed by God, to mere privileges permitted by politicians! Dems boisterously booed God three times at their national convention!*
One of their ploys uses atheism to attack America with a false argument of separation of church and state, which is not in the Constitution! Quite the contrary, Judeo-Christian tenets form the foundation of our Constitutional Republic. If there is any valid pretense for separation of church and state at all, it is that government influence on religion is the antithesis of Christian influence on government.

If you have other evidence please provide but I don’t remember hearing about god coming down to tell us what our rights are and what they are not.

We’re lucky if we get to have a nativity scene up anywhere. Obama touts the beauty of Islam, athiests, abortions, and homosexuals. AND THEN…he swears in on a bible!

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 1:19pmObama is not a “natural born citizen” eligible to serve as President pursuant to Article 2, Section 1, of the Constitution![1]
Furthermore his proven identity anomalies i.e., fraudulent birth certificate, altered Selective Service Registration, stolen CT SS#, and aliases: Barry Soetoro, Harrison J. Bounel, Barack Soebarkah, indicate he is not even a U.S. citizen.[2]
Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts set 2/15/2013 for the full court to hear a case regarding Obama’s forged identity in conference.

Justice Thomas has admitted they’re evading Obama’s ineligibility.[3] Pray he speaks up again to urge his colleagues to finally enforce the Constitution!

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 8:17pmPut the aliases aside for a moment. He started out as Barry Dunham and where are the legal papers that establish his adopted name of Barry Soetoro that he used when he attended Occidental College and NYU as a foreign student ?
Then he “takes” the name of his father. Where are the legal name change papers to prove the name Barak H. Obama ?
One would “think” that if a person wanted to run for President of the USA he would at the very least
use his legal name.
P.S. His “legal” name on his so-called Hawaiian birth certificate should have legally read “Barry Dunham” as his mother was NOT married to his father as his father was currently married to his second wife.

Here’s my question to you: how come so many tea party birthers swear Ted Cruz (born in Canada) is eligible to run for president? The constitution is clear – you have to be born in the US in order to be a citizen, and Cruz was clearly not.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 4:33pmReligions are man made. Look at the progression of christian morality over time. Obviously the religions morals have changed with society and not the other way around. It’s not even a radical thing to say. To say an infallible being (god) can be responsible for such horrific attitudes expressed in the old testament is insane. Was slavery and stonings moral 2k years ago but not now? Unless slavery and stoning people are moral treatments then that would make god wrong bc these are the actions he called for in the old testament. How could an infallible being be wrong about morality? Only possible answer is that these morals were made by men and written in the bible. And if that is the case, and you get your morality from the bible…then yes religion gets its morality from humans and not the other way around. This is very simple logic.
