Outraged Mother: School Suggested My 13-Year-Old Daughter Get Breast Reduction Surgery to Minimize Bullying

A mother in St. Louis, Missouri was stunned after her daughter’s school allegedly suggested breast reduction surgery as a possible way to combat bullying.
Tammie Jackson said her 13-year-old daughter Gabrielle has been dealing with bullying and sexual harassment since last semester, so she called the Riverview Gardens School District to complain.
“The lady on the switchboard told me that they could transfer my daughter to a different school, but she [said] her boobs are so large that she’s going to always get teased,” the mother claimed. “And then she told me that the only suggestion she could make is for my 13-year-old daughter to get a breast reduction.”

(Photo: WTVI)
Fox affiliate KTVI has more:
“It makes me feel like now you are telling me it’s my fault, it’s God’s fault the way He made her. The lady on the phone said they could transfer my daughter and said her boobs were so large she will always get teased. And the only suggestion she had for me is to have my daughter get a breast reduction,” said Jackson.
FOX 2 stopped by the school district for a response and we’re told they’re working to counsel students to resolve the bullying issue. As for the claims about the surgery, we’re told they are still looking into it.
Jackson also says her 9-year-old son Elijah has bullying issues. He has a rare heart condition and she says kids make fun of his surgical scars, causing him to make suicidal comments.
Jackson says all she wants is resolution to an issue she says can affect kids for the rest of their lives, “Talk with the kids. Let them know people’s bodies are changing, everybody is different, but God made us all great.”
Superintendent Clive Coleman reiterated that the issue is under investigation, but speculated that the controversy may be a “product of miscommunication.”

Posted on January 20, 2013 at 2:40pmThe real issue here is that these school official are the ones with the problem and need Mouth Reductions. The bullying which appears to be from not just other students, but the teachers and school officials themselves, that instead “should be” helping to stop the bullying. Their logic in solving the problem by breast reduction is ludicrious (stupidity). Hmmm, who really has the problem? Not this young beautiful girl. The bullies are always the ones with the inferiority complex.
Get a good education Gabrielle, your already a beautiful young lady.

Posted on January 20, 2013 at 3:43amNO! This is a TRASHY way to behave, although becoming more & more prevalent & acceptable. What ever happen to “sticks & stones?” Becoming an adult is STRONGLY based on control of one’s childlike impulses/emotions. Much of society (usual lower class behavior) now thinks lack of impulse control is perfectly OK. You wonder why a group of older kids than this think it’s now OK to surround another kid or an old person & beat them up JUST FOR FUN – it’s an outgrowth of that mentality.
IF the school officials were doing their job, they would track down the harassers & pressure/penalize them.

We voted for the school system we are experiencing. By voting for this school system we voted not to teach of ethics, morals and self reliance.
What do you think, would more or less ethic help in this situation?
How about more or less morality?
How about self reliance, would learning to be self reliant help in this situation?
We voted for larger slums, shrinking rural communities, degrading national education in worldwide comparisons and climbing nation debt as we try to feed and care for the increasing number of under educated our public school system is cranking out each spring.
If each of us spent 5 minutes each day filling in the huge gaps we experienced from public education, do you think we would fall for government funded mandatory attendance public education again?

When I read the headline I was outraged that a school and it’s employees would do this. At first I only viewed the pictures of the girl and her Mother. I have to say my first thought was to disparage the Mother because of her apparel, but on reading the article I have to say, this school and it’s employees need to be raked over the coals on this one. This is complete Bullspit. It seems since this girl, who is well endowed, should either take the bullying or be removed to another school were she may still be bullied, or have a breast reduction,as the school suggests, is like saying “remove the problem and everything will be okay.” Like I said above “complete Bullspit”. How dare these school employees say and treat this girl the way they have. I’m really p’d off over this! I hope the best for this family. They have been done wrong and I hope it will be set right.

Maybe tell the bullies what the middle finger salute stands for. Tell your child the thing that makes them different is good and others will catch up eventually. Telling them to have surgery???What??? If parents don’t have the time to devote to this issue there is always the home schooling alternative.

You are correct that she will have to endure some level of torment wherever she goes. However, the response from the school admin was entirely unacceptable. They have clearly demonstrated that they choose to address the bullied and are afraid to stand on solid ground when dealing with bullies. Bullies become what they are because they thrive on exploiting weakness. The actions of the school admin will result in bullies that dominate the school staff as well as the weaker students. I know this because I was also bullied and toughened up and stood up for weaker students where the school failed.

Posted on January 20, 2013 at 2:34pmDude: There is no reason to “grow up” or “toughen up” when you are walking down the hallway or in gym class and are routinely pointed at, laughed at, mocked, comments. This is sexual harassment. My guess is that this girl is getting pushed and shoved and people are making “gestures” as well. This girl should not have to tolerate one damn minute of this. In my day when someone made fun of a girl for big boobs or being too fat or anything else we got up in their damn face and told them we would rearrange it! We meant business. We backed up what we said in school. We took care of things ourselves. We didn’t have all this “political correctness” bull crap and if someone messed with you it was customary to give them a verbal warning with the instruction that serious consequences would follow. WE didn’t involve our parents in high school crap like this. We took care of it OURSelves. I was given instruction by my parents to handle my business. I had a full time schedule of work and school by the time I was 14. My parents never went up in my high school. I took care of my own business by 14. I was grown! We need parents like mine that empower their children to take care of themselves and a school system like the one I grew up in that lets kids know if you bully someone and they warn you even once and then you end up with a bloody nose then you deserve it! WE used to have police officers like this as well. One man would “cross the line” with another man and the cops looke

Posted on January 20, 2013 at 2:46pmI will tell you why. Cause teenagers are no longer treated as adults as they were in my day. By the time I was 14 I had a job and went to school and did my chores at home. We worked. We were treated as adults. We were prepared. My parents empowered me to handle myself out in public. People who messed with me got one warning. Within that warning was the instruction that if said person stepped any closer I would do everything within my power to defend myself. When they “crossed the line” they got shoved back. End of story. I backed up everything I said I would do. I was taught to defend myself. And ignore whatever anybody else said. We had boxing gloves at home. I sparred with my brothers. When I sent my kids to school they said they were not allowed to defend themselves. I said BS! I told them they MUST defend themselves. I sent my kids out into the world prepared. If any school administrator prevented my child from defending themselves I was up in their office giving them hell! I did that a few times. Otherwise my kids took care of their business. I never had an expelled child. My kids made sure other kids knew they meant business cause they had a momma who meant business. Public Schools are not above the law of the land which allows each human being to defend themselves. This 13 year old girl had she been mine would have already had this issue solved. A few broken or bloody noses would have done the trick. Back up your mouth with your fists. End of lesson.

Back in my day we had few fights cause other kids knew you would get a serious beat down. People puffed up their chests and trash talked but anyone looking at my face knew I would seriously beat the living hell out of them. NO one but one kid in high school ever messed with me and he was damn sorry he did. My parents empowered ME to take care of my own business and I did. It’s called SELF DEFENSE! It’s LEGAL! Even in a public school! Our kids and the parents have been COWERED by school officials long enough! We got laws! I have told more than one school official in my day concerning my own kids that their school policies DO NOT trump the US Constitution, aka, the Law of the Land and our rights to defend ourselves even in school. These school officials ALWAYS back down when you tell them that. And of course that you will get a lawyer to defend the same. FIGHT BACK!

There are many here who are failing to train up your kids – when I was coming up -the bullies could only go so far and then the rest of us had enough.
When I was coming up, there was this concept taught called the Golden Rule – do unto others as you would have done unto you – which translated on the school yard as I will treat you right, I will turn the other cheek but if you insist on treating me wrongly, I will be ever so thrilled to reciprocate your behavior since it seems that is how you wish to be treated. (yeah – I know – not exactly the full spirit of the rule – but hey – leftists don’t believe in rules so this too is relative in their realm – get over it) In any event – the bully was shut down and became a better person for his trouble
