Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) sat down with HuffPost Live Friday, where he made a noteworthy statement about the rapidly-growing National Rifle Association.
Responding to interviewer Alicia Menendez’s question about whether Schumer’s colleagues are “willing to admit” that the NRA is a “fringe group,” the senator responded: “Well they sure are a fringe group, but whether enough of my colleagues are ready to admit that, I’m not sure.”
He continued: “They are a very extreme group. They don’t even represent average gun holders.”
The two proceeded to discuss certain gun control measures and Schumer’s intention to “push hard” to get them passed.
The Huffington Post summarizes:
The New York Democrat [said] that when he worked on the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, which went into effect in 1994, the NRA “had such power that they filled it up with loopholes.” The Brady Law required background checks for firearm purchasers.
“Now 40 percent of the guns that are sold in America have no check, even felons can get them,” Schumer said. “If we can plug that up, that would be great.”
Schumer told HuffPost Live he would like to see the number of bullets in a clip limited and assault weapons banned as well, but that he thinks universal background checks will probably be the easiest measure to pass through the House and the one that would have the most impact.
“We’re going to push hard to get that one done and even through the House,” he said.
The NRA says its membership has grown by roughly 250,000 people in just the past month. On Saturday, thousands of Second Amendment supporters rallied across the country in support of their rights.

Jan. 21, 2013 at 2:15pmI’m an average American, living in Idaho, and I was born (and escaped from) Sodom and Gomorrah on the Hudson, aka NY City. I was a police reservist there for 28 years, and they won’t even arm them! I have found that normal life means that one is free to be creative and productive along with one’s neighbors and all for one’s own benefit as well as the benefit of those around us. And that is average to me. As is my membership in the NRA. As is practically all of the State of Idaho’s membership! I don’t know anyone here who doesn’t belong or who does not go to the annual NRA dinner dance and benefit show, a great affair! That is average here. Maybe not with Chuckie, but that’s how the socialist state of New York sees life; so let ‘em stew in their own rot, in a city so large and over-populated with illegals that they almost outnumber the citizens! And where the police don’t even trust their own auxiliaries with a firearm. How pitiful that all is. And the worst of it? There, THAT is average. I say everyone call Chuck Schumer at 202-224-6542, his Senate office, and let this… so and so know what you really think of him and his mouth. And his lack of logic.

Jan. 21, 2013 at 12:20pmOf course to Chucky Schumer the NRA earns a title of “extreme fringe group” Thats because Chuck and his liberal pals think it is their job to gnaw away at the rights of American citizens. They cannot protect us but would surely take away our ability to protect ourselves. The NRA has long stood guard over our right to keep and bear arms. Chuck don’t like that and I don’t like Chuck or anybody else thinking they can take away my rights. I may or may not exercise that right but it does not mean I want to give up that right.

Jan. 21, 2013 at 11:00amIt takes a Marxist/Communist to label the NRA a fringe group. Way to show your true colors to your communist sympathizers at HuffPost, Chuck. You’re an embarrassment to our country and to freedom loving people everywhere.

Jan. 21, 2013 at 10:08amI left Brooklyn, NY in 1969 because of political morons the likes Schumer ( I remember Javitts ) and although I missed it I only returned on business or to visit my parents before they retired and left NYC. What is it about these career politicians and the fools in NYC who keep putting them back in office?

Jan. 21, 2013 at 9:40amLet’s not forget our history. This is the same individual that stated over 20 years ago that he was the NRA’s worst enemy, only to see both houses swept clean of democrats for at least the next decade! He and his colleague Feinstein with Clinton’s help brought us the last so called assault weapons ban. Only to have it expire, so now these same suspects want to replay the same script yet again.

Jan. 21, 2013 at 9:35amWell, I think Senator Schumer is part of a “Fringe” group…Democrats who believe the Constitution doesn’t apply to them and they can infringe upon We the People’s God-given Rights! In my humble opinion, people like him would have a far more difficult time getting and staying elected if it weren’t for the liberal bias that’s been and is being spoon-fed to our children in Public Schools.
The last election indicates we have a serious problem in this country…with our Youth…who think Liberalism is the better path to take in public policy. To me, it’s not much better than a desease…and people like Senator Schumer are the symptom…

Jan. 21, 2013 at 9:02amI’m a member of a “fringe group”, when my entire life I have obeyed the laws, and even managed to give back to society, in time and money and profession. And now I have a derogatory label, because I belong to a group that some arrogant politician, with a well-armed security detail, has now decided to label me. NRA-ILA is NOT a fringe group, and he knows that for a fact. He’s continually batting, hoping to hit a political ball out of the park. I suspect that if NRA was not as effective as it is, he would not even mention the group
I truly question who he is making these laws for, and I know he cannot be that ignorant to believe that ANYONE in ANY CITY – the higher the population the better odds, can get a gun (and ammo) without filing paperwork and getting a carry permits and getting the ‘universal back ground check’, and these are the people that do not care about the law. And common sense will tell anyone that these are the same people that will not relinquish their weapons if the worst case scenario arrives and total disarmament is attempted.
The most disturbing point at this time, to me, is the “universal back ground check”, in a country that doesn’t trust the federal government, but wants to abide by the laws, how are we to trust the passage of such an ambiguous law? Who will conduct it, who will interpret it, and who will pay for it?
What’s on the next item on the political agenda, SSRI’s in the NYC water supply?
