Joe Scarborough’s transformation from a firebreathing member of Newt Gingrich’s 1994 freshman class to a frequent antagonist of some current day conservatives on MSNBC has been well documented. Certainly, Scarborough’s frequent criticisms of the modern day Republican Party have endeared and infuriated his viewers in similar measure.
And today on “Meet the Press,” Scarborough made some observations that are sure to inspire a similar reaction. Speaking on the subject of gun control and the ongoing debate regarding the subject, Scarborough dismissed the party’s continued control of the House of Representatives as the product of “gerrymandering,” and suggested that conservatives needed a figure like former National Review founder William F. Buckley to carry out a purge of the movement’s least desirable elements.
“Republicans have to speak to the middle class concerns, and it’s not just about the debt, even though that’s the issue that personally matters the most to me. This party has been getting smaller and smaller and smaller. William F. Buckley in the 1960′s at some point had to start defining the boundaries of conservatism, and so what did he do? He went after the John Birch Society. He went after Ayn Rand. He went after George Wallace. That has to happen again with this party, because it’s getting smaller and smaller and smaller,” Scarborough began.
“In this debate,” he continued, “we actually have conservative thinkers talking about Ronald Reagan being a RINO, a Republican-in-name-only, because he supported an assault weapons ban. They keep pushing themselves closer and closer to the cliff. And I just got to say one other really important point, ’cause I’ve made a mistake over the past month, talking about how Republicans have also won a majority in the House. As this article I was referencing mentioned, we actually got a minority of votes nationwide in House races. It was just gerrymandering from 2010 that gave us the majority.”
Watch Scarborough’s remarks below, courtesy of Mediaite:
Scarborough is correct about Republicans winning a minority of nationwide votes. However, his usage of the phrase “gerrymandering,” which implies something untoward in dividing districts a certain way, is sure to raise some hackles.

Jan. 20, 2013 at 9:34pmGet ready for the next wave of immigrants.
China has experts floating the idea of land for what we owe them. Many have talked about this for years but it looks to be be forthcoming, especially with the current administration. They also want not only land but businesses they put up, and current businesses already in this country they can buy. Then they want to bring their own people here to work the land and businesses. Mass immigration with the inclusion of their families and through the new laws being enacted, the immigration of uncles, aunts, in-laws etc.
Fun and game time for many of you and your kids. Yea! Obama and his cohorts

Jan. 20, 2013 at 8:38pmIsn’t rolling over and giving in to Obama on every issue, kind of defining the direction the republican party is headed for? Nothing that the republicans are doing today have anything to do with any kind of conservative movement.
Joe just needs to look at the latest headlines to realize his wishes have already come true. He likes to bring up the issue of gun control, but so far I haven’t heard a peep from any of the leaders of the republican party, for all anyone knows they support Obama on the disarmament of the American people.

Jan. 20, 2013 at 8:35pmWhy is there such an effort to tell the Republican party exactly what to believe what to say and how to act…
I don’t see the same coordinated effort on the left? Does anyone else? I mean they put Bush Sr. in our face, then Collin Powell, McCain, and now Gov Christie all as role models of what good Repbulicans are suppose to support.. Now Joe wants to purge some of us who are out of line with the Establishment’s thinking..
Interesting. Why can’t we pick our own leader without being told we have to support a ban on guns, amnesty and all these freaking insane Wars??? lol
Why doesn’t anyone want to purge those on the left? I go to work pay taxes, don’t cheat anyone, maintain a surplus, don’t go into debt but I’m just not good enough for our Establishment?? Sort of confusing it”s like they only want one party..

Jan. 20, 2013 at 8:04pmThe problem with the last two republican presidential canidates is that they were both liberal until they started running for president. Both McCain and Romney tried transforming themselves from their liberal past but couldn’t do it. I didn’t see all this doom and gloom talk from the dems when they lost in 2000,2002, and 2004. Jan. 21, 2013 at 7:28amNot Exactly.
It is constitutional to redistrict for POLITICAL reasons, just not for racial reasons. It has been luck that the GOP sweeps over many states after each census & the GOP legislatures there can redistrict – usually having to overcome federal judges (& the DOJ). It is the tendency of both parties to “endanger” the districts they do not “have” & to solidify districts which they barely won.
Both parties do it.

But thanks to the American electoral process, votes are not treated equally across the U.S.–some votes are granted more federal representation than others. The electoral college accomplishes this, this assignment of equal voting power on the basis of arbitrary political boundaries in the Senate does this, and the practice of single-member district plurality elections for the House does this (and opens up the potential for gerrymandering, though ALL these undemocratic effects are still manifested with or without gerrymandering). Whether or not gerrymandering takes place, American political and electoral institutions are DEEPLY flawed, to the point of threatening the very principle of eqal representation of the Peoples’ interests that is necessary to legitimately claim the status of “democracy” for oneself.

Jan. 20, 2013 at 7:20pmAll that you say is true. Bear in mind, however, that the people who wrote the Constitution had absolutely no intention of creating a “democratic” polity. The Senate and the Electoral College were actually intended to prevent the US from becoming one.

Jan. 20, 2013 at 7:30pmGerrymandering does indeed exist and if anyone doubts it, I encourage you to look it up in GLENN BECK’S BOOK, “common sense”. If we had listened to the founders, we would have one representative for every 30,000 people – which would be hard to gerrymander. Instead, we currently have one representative for every 700,000 people.

Jan. 20, 2013 at 11:19pmApportioning electoral votes by congressional district can be done on a state basis without requiring a constitutional amendment. If it’s done in enough states, it could guarantee a Republican electoral vote victory in every presidential even if the Democrats get more popular votes. We should all encourage our state legislatures to begin acting on this now so it is in place before the 2016 election.

Joe should realize that perhaps the GOP has the House because its election is closest to the people. Because a Constitutional Amendment 100 years ago made Senators elected the WRONG way (i.e., just like the House), their election became “nationalized” & not as beholden to the state legislature (which used to “elect” Senators). This is a deep flaw & probably will never be remedied. The modern age of the internet should enable government (at higher levels) to be skeletonized & laws/rules distributed as close as possible to the people affected. That will probably not be remedied in the foreseeable future as we are increasing the socialist state by hordes of federal workers.
