Do You Know the Fascinating and Troubling Story About the Woman Behind the Roe v. Wade Case?
Today marks the 40th anniversary since the Supreme Court ruled on the controversial Roe vs. Wade case. The result, of course, was legalized abortion across the United States of America and a seemingly never-ending debate surrounding theology, public policy and women’s rights.
While many people are well aware of the general themes surrounding the legal battle, the background of the woman at the center of it all, Jane Roe (real name: Norma McCorvey), may be somewhat unknown to most Americans. Her story is a fascinating one, as the plaintiff-turned-activist quickly became the catalyst — and face — of legalized abortion, later renouncing her role to become one of the nation’s most outspoken pro-life advocates. And even if you might have known that, there’s plenty of other fascinating details you may not.
McCorvey, who went by the pseudonym ”Jane Roe” for the purposes of her role in a legal battle that set off decades of furor, has gone through some fascinating evolutions over the past four decades (in case you’re wondering, “Wade” was Henry Wade, Dallas County’s District attorney who was attempting to uphold Texas law). Contrary to what one might expect from the woman who once fervently challenged abortion regulations, McCorvey, in her later years, has expressed sadness about the Roe vs. Wade verdict. In 1997, about the ruling’s anniversary, she told the outlet that it made her “very sad.”
As was documented in a past CNN interview, McCorvey, who was only 21 when her case made it to the nation’s high court, didn’t have an easy life. Interestingly, while she fought for abortion rights, McCorvey never actually had the procedure. At the time that Roe vs. Wade was heard, she was on her third pregnancy (the case wasn’t decided until two years after her child was born). She ended up giving birth to a baby girl, who was subsequently given up for adoption. In addition, her first child was raised by her mother and her second was cared for by the father.
According to her book, “I Am Roe: My Life, Roe v. Wade, and Freedom of Choice,” McCorvey described suffering many abuses in her early life. Among them, she was a ninth-grade dropout, she was abused emotionally and physically as a child, she was married at 16 and subsequently beaten by her husband and she was raped. Additionally, McCorvey experimented with individuals of both sexes and also used drugs and alcohol in her younger years (at least one interview seems to indicate that she used these substances until later in her life). In a past media interview the advocate also described herself as a “street kid” and “a rebel” during her teen years.
A 1994 New York Times profile, outlining McCorvey’s more than two-decade romance with a woman named Connie Gonzalez, provides a more complex depiction of McCorvey’s early life, delving into some fascinating details surrounding her background:
Her grandmother was a prostitute and fortuneteller. Her father was a television repairman, her mother an alcoholic. Part Cajun, part Cherokee Indian, and raised as a Jehovah’s Witness, Norma Leah Nelson was 10 when she took money from the gas station where she worked to run away from home. After that, her education came from reform schools until the ninth grade. By the time she was 15, she had been sexually assaulted by a nun and a male relative of her mother’s. At 16, she married an itinerant steel worker, Woody McCorvey, who, she says, beat her. She left him and returned to her mother’s house in Dallas with plans to raise her unborn child alone.
But after her daughter, Melissa, was born and Ms. McCorvey confided in her mother that her sexual preference was for women, she says, her mother kidnapped Melissa, banished Ms. McCorvey from the house and raised her granddaughter herself. Ms. McCorvey writes that when she was drunk, her mother tricked her into signing adoption papers, giving away custody.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that her book — and her identity — were known to the American public. Once she released her name and officially emerged from the cloak of protection that “Jane Roe” had afforded her, McCorvey apparently worked in clinics that provided abortions and became a public speaker (she also cleaned homes, among other jobs). A Seattle Times article from 1994 provides a recap of how she came forward, while also providing some additional details about McCorvey’s life, including her sexuality:
First – shaking, sick to her stomach and fortified by vodka and Valium – she told a Dallas television reporter she was Jane Roe of Roe vs. Wade, the anonymous pregnant plaintiff whose case led to the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States.
Next, she admitted she had lied about that pregnancy in the hope it would help her get an abortion: It was a casual affair that made her pregnant, not rape as she told her Roe lawyers.
And, little by little, through occasional interviews, sporadic speaking engagements and a 1989 television movie, she revealed that before she gave birth to the Roe baby and gave her to adoptive parents, she had given birth to two other children (one adopted, she believes, by its father; the other adopted by McCorvey’s mother). Slowly, she began speaking of her long-term lesbian relationship, her job cleaning houses, the joys of being a grandmother herself.
For more than 20 years, McCorvey worked for the pro-choice movement, continuing along the same path that had led to her 1973 victory, as CNN documents. But in 1995, her situation changed. At the time, she was working at a clinic in Dallas, Texas, when a pro-life group called Operation Rescue moved in next door. At the time, McCorvey was extremely pro-choice, voicing her disdain for the group and continuing to dig her heels in on the abortion issue. But after striking up a relationship with one of the evangelical faith leaders working for the organization, her outlook began to change.
After meeting The Rev. Phillip Benham, national director for Operation Rescue, she converted to Christianity — a startling evolution, considering her background and the battle she had engaged in over abortion rights. Following her change-of-heart, she was baptized on national television, wrote another book about her faith experience (“Won By Love”) and began working for the pro-life movement.

As CNN noted 15 years ago when it completed its profile on McCorvey, her conversion and subsequent emergence as a pro-life leader has widely been viewed as a positive for those who oppose abortion. Pro-choice advocates, including the lawyers who once represented her, have obviously been less-than-impressed by her decision to join their opposition. The differences between McCorvey’s then-and-now are shocking.
While in 1994, before her conversion, McCorvey said that she would have had an abortion “in a heartbeat” had the procedure been legal in 1969, her tune changed just a few years later when she said that the pregnancy was already too far along for her to have gone through with it.
Contrary to past interviews before her conversion during which McCorvey seemed to have no regrets about being the woman at the center of the infamous abortion case, her comments over the past 15 years have painted a different picture of her experience. A web site called EndRoe.org explains her role in the Supreme Court Case that came to starkly divide Americans:
[McCorvey] describes herself as having been relatively ignorant of the facts of her own case, and claims that her attorneys simply used her for their own predetermined ends. They “were looking for somebody, anybody, to use to further their own agenda. I was their most willing dupe.” She had indeed become pregnant with her third child and sought to end her pregnancy, but she was not aware of all the implications of abortion or even what the term itself meant. “‘Abortion’, to me, meant ‘going back’ to the condition of not being pregnant.” She did not fully realize that this process would end a human life. She says that her attorney Sarah Weddington, rather than correcting her misconceptions, deliberately confused the issue: “For their part, my lawyers lied to me about the nature of abortion. Weddington convinced me, ‘It’s just a piece of tissue. You just missed your period.’” Another problem was that Norma claimed that her pregnancy was the result of a gang-rape, in order to present a more sympathetic picture. As she has since admitted, this was totally untrue.
Norma states that her actual involvement in the case was minimal. She signed the initial affidavit without even reading it, and “was never invited into court. I never testified. I was never present before any court on any level, and I was never at any hearing on my case . . . I found out about the decision from the newspaper just like the rest of the country.”
TheBlaze reached out to Weddington to discuss the case and the allegations that McCorvey has waged against her, but she declined to comment (she has enjoyed widespread success, though, as a result of the case). The plaintiff and her legal representatives have drifted apart over the years, particularly following the activist’s political change-of-heart on the issue of abortion.
Diverting from Weddington and her former pro-choice compatriots, McCorvey has been heavily-active in pro-life activities since concerting to Christianity. She launched an organization called “Roe No More” in 1997, although it appears that the initiative is no longer in operation (a phone number listed on its web site has been disconnected).
In addition to numerous appearances, speeches and commentaries, McCorvey also attempted to take legal action against the Roe vs. Wade verdict. In 2004, a court struck down her attempt to have the case overturned. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, Louisiana, dismissed the case after McCorvey claimed that abortions cause long-term emotional damage to the women who have them. And in 2009, the activist was arrested for interrupting Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor‘s nomination hearing.
Of late, McCorvey, now 65, has seemingly left the public eye, but in Oct. 2012, she emerged to record a controversial video aimed at President Barack Obama’s abortion record. In the clip, she encouraged viewers not to vote for the president and said that he “murders babies.” She was paid $1,000 for the spot:
In a recent Vanity Fair article, a plethora of details about McCorvey were released — not all of them favorable — as the outlet attempts to recap the woman’s complex life. Among other tidbits, Gonzalez, her former lover, is quoted as calling the Roe plaintiff a “phony” and her own mother discusses the difficulties she encountered in raising McCorvey. Her daughter, too, has less-than-favorable words for her mother.
TheBlaze reached out to Fr. Frank Pavone, a Catholic leader who has worked closely with McCorvey to learn more about her character, her current status and how he believes the Roe vs. Wade case has impact the woman’s life. Today, Pavone claims that McCorvey is living in Texas and is attempting to “step away from the limelight and take care of herself.” As for those who have criticized the woman who brought legalized abortion upon America, the priest had only favorable words for her.
Pavone knows McCorvey’s character well, as he is one of her spiritual advisers and he received her into the Catholic Church in 1998, following her earlier conversion into the evangelical Christian faith.
“She had a sincere conversion, just as many Americans do every day and many former abortion clinic workers have had. I have never known Norma to be greedy,” Pavone wrote in an e-mail to TheBlaze. “She did serve the pro-life movement full-time, and as hundreds of Americans do, she drew a legitimate salary for that employment. However, I have been side by side with her in many projects and activities in which Norma gave of her time and effort without either seeking or receiving a penny.”
No matter where one stands on McCorvey, one thing is clear: The historical figure who was the centerpiece of one of America’s most contentious Supreme Court cases has a complex past and, subsequently, is an individual who is viewed with a diversity of opinion by people on both sides of the aisle.

Abortion is the law of the land due to a drunen, drug-addicted lying lesbian who would get on her back

Posted on January 23, 2013 at 1:33pmActually, Mama, as I understand it, the Congress could end abortion simply by defining when life begins. Since the (presumed) supreme court acknowledged that their collective wisdom could not identify when life begins, they allowed (legal) abortion. They asked Congress to clarify the ‘question’. I pray that Congress will shortly take up that question and answer it.

The anonymous pig had to force its way to the trough. The MOST COMMONLY held opinion now
is that it was a mistake for SCOTUS to accept this case in the first place as it should have remained
a State issue to be decided “By The People”.
http://www.gale.cengage.com/free_resources/whm/trials/roe.htm
“Norma McCorvey became pregnant in the summer of 1969. The 21-year-old woman’s marriage had failed, and her mother and stepfather were raising her five-year-old daughter. McCorvey did not want to continue her pregnancy. Since Texas law prohibited abortion except to save a woman’s life, McCorvey began to look for someone willing to perform one illegally.
Although she was not successful in that search, she did meet Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee, two attorneys interested in changing the abortion laws. McCorvey agreed to become plaintiff “Jane Roe” in a test case.”
TRUTH:
The consequences of irresponsibility SHOULD be failure and hardship. People seem to really enjoy the screwing part, but want to shirk the responsibility of the resulting pregnancy that occurs.

Not exactly–the result was legalized abortion within the FIRST trimester; the second and third trimester can be regulated in ascending order of strictness even under Roe v. Wade (hence why Bush was able to pass an outright ban on third trimester abortions).

Do you know what you just said?
Why would we have to pass a law delineating what is clearly immoral? But if we don’t pass a law then at some future point let’s say 150 or 200 years, some wag will that was not the framer’s intend to outlaw that, because they never wrote a law to cover it.
And the only reason that they did not was because it was understood to be wrong. Who think it much less do it.
And it is clearly immoral. A baby at the 3rd trimester has DNA, feels pain & has a functioning brain which is even then processing information & integrating.

“Why would we have to pass a law delineating what is clearly immoral?”
Because laws and morality are never the exact same thing? Morality is incredibly personal; what is “moral” for one person is not moral for another. Divorce and remarriage are immoral (by biblical standards), but they are legal. Adultery is immoral but legal (in most places). You can get drunk, and it’s legal; but if you can smoke peyote (a traditional part of many Native American cultures) it’s illegal.
If you’re wed morality and legality in your mind, you need to divorce the two. They’re distant cousins, not a married couple.

No, the reasons they did not include anything about abortion in the Constitution are (1) They didn’t KNOW about abortion–nothing at all comparable was technologically possible in 1787; and (2) They didn’t have the TIME to go through, consider, and develop a thoughtful response to EVERY specific eventuality that MIGHT confront Americans into perpetuity–and they REALIZED this and PURPOSEFULLY left some things, many things even, open-ended.

In 1965, in the USA, TWO HUNDRED women died per thousand abortions. Today there are twenty abortions per thousand women.
So: Prior to Roe.v.Wade, one in five abortions resulted in the death of the woman. That means, today, the anti-abortion group (Right to Lifers) are lobbying to annually KILL four of every thousand women in the 15-44 age group.
The shame of Roe.v.Wade is that there are people who openly lobby to murder 4-in-1000 women … and nobody in the media is calling them on it. For this group, calling them selves proponents of The Right-to-life, the reality is, the want the Right-to-Murder to become law.
If they support life, what are they doing to support the babies that are born? Are they providing them with medical care? Covering the cost of the pregnancy? Providing education, or anything that supports the living and ensures a fruitful growth to a productive adulthood?
!!!!!! NO !!!!!!
What they want is dead women, and sickly, illiterate children..

I am a huge proponent of fixing the adoption system and promoting adoption over abortion, I have had family members who waited YEARS for a child through adoption only in the end having to go to another country and adopt three children from one family because our system is that broken.

Posted on January 22, 2013 at 5:32pmDr. Bernard Nathanson disputed the statistics on how many abortions were performed and how many women died. It is also important to note “that The chemical structure of penicillin was determined by Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin in 1945.[28] Penicillin has since become the most widely used antibiotic to date, and is still used for many Gram-positive bacterial infections.”(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). So, penicillin did not come into wide usage until years later. As far as your gibberish that Pro-life people want women dead and children sickly, nothing could be further from the truth. That fact is supported by the many post-abortive women who are “Silent no more” at the March for Life Rally. Posted on January 22, 2013 at 5:54pmIf I remember correctly, while your facts are technically correct, the dip in maternal deaths as a result of abortion also conveniently parallel the onset of the widespread use of antibiotics. It’s been a long time since I’ve thought through this point, but again, if I remember correctly, the reported numbers of abortion related hospital treatments or maternal deaths the year before and the year after Roe v Wade would lead someone to either think that a) there were many fewer abortions happening illegally pre-Roe than were used in the arguments in court, or b) post-Roe abortions were just as deadly. The most common perception of the data is that Pre-Roe, abortions were not done with hangers in back alleys, but more likely, done by the same doctors who later did it legally after hours and paid off the books.

Posted on January 22, 2013 at 5:55pmFirst off, since you seem to be so concerned about women’s health. Why don’t you start advocating for the medical staff in these abortion mills to at least be licensed health care providers. Most of these abortion mills are run like third world medical units. Very little (if any) sterilization of instruments. I pray in front of an abortion mill every Saturday morning & I can assure you that the doctor/butcher there would pretty much let his patient’s die outside in the cold before calling for an ambulance if the woman started hemorrhaging because having an ambulance come to his office would “look bad” for his business! As far as who takes care of all these unwanted babies, there are millions of couples who would love to adopt them!.

Posted on January 22, 2013 at 6:00pmYour words are moronic. No one wants dead women except the people who abort baby women. The thing is that when there is a law most people follow it. So if it were against the law then there is an easy way to avoid dying from it and that is to not do it. In the past women were looked down on for getting pregnant before marriage, but that is not the way of the world anymore. Sickly illiterate children… Um I think not. We have a nation full of illiterate children and we have legal abortion. We have a bunch of people who no longer take responsibility for themselves and this includes have sex with many people without being married. Abortion has only made it so that they don’t have to take responsibility for what they do. There are pregnancy centers all over this country that try to help women so you know nothing. Most of all people need to take responsibility for themselves. It is not my job to help a woman that goes out and has sex and gets pregnant and then keeps on doing the same thing over and over. I had a friend who fostered kids and the mothers would just keep getting pregnant. People should learn their lessons and wake up and grow up. Then again I think the average I.Q. is hovering just above 70 these days. All you have to do is look at the trolls who come on here to know that.

Posted on January 22, 2013 at 7:28pmYou seem to be missing some major points. Specifically, you failed to mention that Roe v. Wade does nothing to make abortions safer or less life threatening. On top of that, you have implied that without Roe v. Wade abortion would be entirely illegal (which it wasn’t even before the decision) and that overturning it would make all abortions illegal (which is nothing short of an outright lie). You didn’t even bother to compare statistics from states with different approaches to the abortion issue or even to compare the number of deaths before with the number from a few years later.
Then again, of course, you clearly aren’t the kind to actually do your own research, are you? After all, all you did was quote from an article published today. At least you could put some effort into your arguments.

Prior to Roe v. Wade, there were states that allowed abortion and I would bet that in those states, the death rate was much lower. However, in states that did not allow abortion, there were 3rd rate physicians who performed them – usually in a storefront clinic. There are still 3rd rate physicians performing a lot of procedures, only they’ve found a more lucrative situation – they round up anyone in the ghetto who has a Medicaid card, bring them into their office for a few minutes, then bill Medicaid for thousands of dollars. Most don’t get caught, because government auditors are too overwhelmed with prying into the books of small businesses and can’t find the time to reduce fraudulent billings to government.
As for “voting for illiterate children,” that has been a growing problem thanks to the various welfare programs available. Think about it, Shrek, we pay women who are incapable of taking care of themselves to have children! These women are, by and large, illiterate, slovenly addicts – and we foot the bill for their lifestyle. Every child they bear gives them a raise – and there really is nothing that forces them to actually care for the child. I’ve known welfare queens who use the formula they get compliments of WIC to cut the cocaine the baby daddy sells out of the government-subsidized apartment they share. So tell me, who is really voting for “dead women and illiterate, sickly children”?

Posted on January 22, 2013 at 4:39pmHi there, friends and foes. My thoughts as both a recovering alcoholic and a nurse: in both these primary areas in my life I have run across numerous women who have had abortions, and men who have had a child aborted (myself in that group). In the women/abortion groups, I find it very rare that a woman is proud of having had an abortion; rather, it is often the self-recrimination that is a trigger for drinking/drug abuse, psychological traumas of various forms (depression, suicide attempts, PTSD); additionally, in the male group, I find a profound sense of loss rather than relief, which seems to be what most folks would expect the “baby-daddy” to experience. Speaking for myself, I have counseled my sons with these issues in mind. Everyone involved is affected, and the ones who claim no psychological are either lying or sociopaths. My 2 cents.

Posted on January 22, 2013 at 4:30pmI would think that Roe vs. Wade could be revisited just on the basis that the arguments used were completely exaggerated or false! Tell me if I’m completely off on this thinking but I also thought that since Obamacare was passed based on the commerce claus, the reason they needed fewer votes, and it is unconstitutional as regulating commerce but legal as a tax then it should have to pass through congress as a tax! Why is this not the case? Voted through under the commerce clause illegal as such, made into a tax but does not have to pass as such!

Reduce the amount of the developmentally challenged, the black population, and others who didn’t fit her Utopian ideal. Posted on January 22, 2013 at 4:07pmThe goal was to take down the relatively rich middle class, and transfer it’s power to DC through the voting booth, that’s always the Dem’s strategy. You now have a welfare class that’s never worked and was born after Roe. Before Roe, doctors had to send their patients to DC for abortions. They could get one if they told a ‘shrink’ they’d kill themselves.
It’s not surprising the courts wouldn’t hear her lawsuit, since they already crammed the unconstitutional law down our throats. They aren’t going to give up the power they stole.

Posted on January 22, 2013 at 4:13pmI forgot to add, that the current push for **** rights is a natural extension of this. They have to convince white, middle class kids that they are queer, before they are child-bearing age. This accomplishes two goals. Suppresses the white vote, which isn’t as favorable to leftists, and enlarges their demographic, which they have been killing off through abortion.
Abortion can singlehandedly explain why this country has become so polarized. Those voters in the middle were killed off!

Posted on January 22, 2013 at 3:14pmWhat a garbage story. It completely (perhaps intentionally) misrepresents the whole Roe v. Wade decision.
First, the court doesn’t rule that something is “legal” it rules as to whether a challenged law is in conflict with established law, usually the Constitution at the Supreme Court level. In fact, the famously misrepresented ruling STRUCK DOWN a Texas state law that sought to make abortion ILLEGAL.
The Texas law was struck down because it was so restrictive and so draconian that not even a medical professional could order an abortion to save the mother’s life. The doctor had NO say in it, the law was absolute. 24 other states that had very similar laws either removed them or decided not to enforce them. Any state could write an anti-abortion law today, and if they took cognizance of what the Supreme Court ruled against, that law might well survive appeals.
Interestingly enough, the court was NOT able to tie their decision to ANYTHING in the Constitution as they always try to do. The Constitution doesn’t address reproductive rights or options in any way. That is why there is such a huge fight over Supreme Court nominees as legal experts on both sides of the law understand that the only thing stopping new anti-abortion laws is the public’s political pressure on their legislatures.

But the reality is that we should look at it from a state’s rights perspective. Roe v Wade took away the ability of a state to make abortion illegal. That is unconstitutional – no matter what your position on abortion is….

Posted on January 22, 2013 at 3:23pmREALLY? I say: It’s NOT A CHOICE — it’s a BABY.
There is no other side. Abortion = Killing a BABY. There are a zillion ways not to become pregnant and there is no excuse (except rape/incest) and even then, it’s still a BABY. MURDER is wrong. there is no other POV. MURDERING AN INNOCENT CHILD is really wrong. NO other POV.
Being Pregnant when you don’t want to be, don’t plan to be is not fun but the alternative involves killing a Baby. Instead of saying it’s “OUR RIGHT TO OUR BODY” we ought to be saying that its a real, live Baby and what may seem like the worst thing that has ever happened to us can become the best thing if we Trust God. We didn’t give ourselves life — GOD DID. We don’t “own life” like car, GOD owns it. We probably won some type of Heavenly Lotto to be here to learn and grow.
We can’t have it both ways. I say it’s a BABY. I say it’s LIFE. I say if you find yourself in this situation for any reason that murder is wrong. I also say that Planned Parenthood is nothing more than a money-making abortion mill regardless of their so-called non-profit status…someone is making billions.
What a tortured life this ROE person had, but God uses each of us for His purposes to teach and learn from. IT IS NOT A CHOICE…
IT
IS
A
BABY
This is one of those facts of life that no committee or “wishing” can change. Time for us to GROW UP.

Posted on January 22, 2013 at 4:22pmTwo options we can fight for….
1. Allow the states to decide their abortion policy and you will see 30+ states outlaw abortion within 1 year. Abortion laws will be crafted by each state and the best abortion laws will quickly become apparent. If you live in a pro-abortion state, you can move to a different state that suits you better.
2. Make it a federal issue and abortion will be legal in all 50 states for the next 10 years. If by some chance you are able to swing the supreme court, it might become illegal, but the court will eventually swing back and make abortion legal in every state again.
Now, which option do you think is more in line with the principles of the founders and our Constitution? Which option has a higher likelihood of achieving your desired result? The answer to both questions is option #1

Remember that the word” fetus” is Latin for little one or offspring. Now look at the Preamble of the Constitutiuon. In it, we are assured that one of the purposes of the Constitution is to secure the blessings of liberty to “ourselves and our posterity”. Those fetuses are our posterity, howbeit unborn. The Constitution protects them, too, SINCE THEY ARE OUR POSTERITY!
Remember that there is no right greater than that of life. Without life, there is nothing.

hey man, i honestly want to agree with you, but the other people are right… the constitution DOES and should’ve always protected life. You can call it a fetus or whatever term you want, but what makes that small being any less alive than you? What makes the lil one less alive than a already-born baby? They are both completely helpless and they both have their own individual heart beat and set of dna. Is a seedling not alive either? It’s just got a leafy tumor We have to understand that what was thought to be true back 40 years ago has since been utterly proven false… It’s obviously a helpless, defenseless little life form that has every right to having a place in this world as you or I. When you say that term, you know what it reminds me of? A term given to slaves so the people start to look down on them as if they aren’t people, as if they’re property. Just before you start trying to make sense of it scientifically, just remember what all they told us back in the day. it’s like a fingernail… like a tumor… just a clump of tissue… a burden… then comes the widely accepted term “fetus”. I mean CMON people, do we need another bill of rights to once again affirm each and every human being their self-evident unalienable rights?

She lives in the narrow, dark little world that can result from the lack of higher education and being stuck at home with only a small number of people in her world. Emotions like empathy and sympathy are foreign to Patty, and you can forget about expecting her to have the intellect to understand the complexities of issues like abortion.
