The NY SAFE Act passed a week ago in New York was deemed some of the strictest of state gun legislation — but it could have been even more so.
New York Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin explained in a Facebook post last week that he was given the “unpatriotic proposals” by a colleague. And while they didn’t make it into the final bill, that was “thanks to us fighting back.”

The accompanying video posted shows McLaughlin, who represents the state’s 107th district, talking about a list of rejected Democratic proposals for the act on the assembly floor and then being told that it is recommended the list not be shared “because it really has the capacity to damped the enthusiasm to compromise.” Watch the clip:
Here’s the list McLaughlin posted that he says he received from a colleague and notes it is not confidential:
- Confiscation of “assault weapons”
- Confiscation [of] ten round clips
- Statewide database for ALL Guns
- Continue to allow pistol permit holder’s information to be replaced to the public
- Label semiautomatic shotguns with more than 5 rounds or pistol grips as “assault weapons”
- Limit the number of rounds in a magazine to 5 and confiscation and forfeiture of banned magazines
- Limit possession to no more than two (2) magazines
- Limit purchase of guns to one gun per person per month
- Require re-licensing of all pistol permit owners
- Require renewal of all pistol permits every five years
- State issued pistol permits
- Micro-stamping of all guns in New York State
- Require licensing of all gun ammo dealers
- Mandatory locking of guns at home
- Fee for licensing, registering weapons

If I lived there I would simply go down to the courthouse a swear a warrant out for each and everyone of them. They’re attempting to violate the 2cd,4th,5th and 10th amendments. I would also files civil suits against each one as they are attacking my civil rights. Fact is the all Americans should file a class action law suit and use the proceeds to build state and local American militias.

Jan. 22, 2013 at 5:47pmDo a search on supreme court and 2nd amendment, you’ll find that laws in NY are already up against Supreme court rulings that such laws infringe… so what somebody has to do is take them to court, and force the local courts to adhere to the constitution of the state and the Federal constitution. This is why they are so hot on creating a national law because lone the states will always be over ridden with any 2nd amendment law by the constitution and previous supreme court rulings.

Those of us in Western New York are swamped by the number of voters down state in the city and have little chance to change the vote by our legislature and governor. But for us here we are the ones that are fighting the good fight while those of you in the “RED STATES” enjoy the fruits of the patriots that bled for your freedoms. Remember the Alamo? Right now in New York, those of us that are fighting the fight to maintain our second amendment freedoms are the point of the spear with this fight. So tell us to stay here, we will to fight for our rights so that they don’t spread to your state, and believe me, you are in their sights. Instead of condemning us for where we live, support us for the fight we are engaged in. There are many patriots in WNY that love this country but are fighting these laws for everyone. So while you sit in your state, safe in the government that supports your rights to keep your firearms, we in WNY will struggle, spend money, write letters, attend rallies, pray and yes probably lose this fight, but fight we will. I don’t know anyone that will register, and with the stroke of a pen, many of us will be FELONS, are you willing to risk state prison for your firearms? The Republican party is dead here. I have met Steve McLaughlin in my 9.12 group here. We vetted him for office and I can state emphatically that he is a good man. The people in this state will be the first in the nation to test the progressive laws against guns. NEVER forget that. We are fighting for our lives up here. There were over 6500 Pro Gun peeps that showed up at four separate rallies in NY State against the new gun laws. We are fighting for our lives here. So have some respect!

Jan. 23, 2013 at 3:52pmI am in Syracuse. First off you need to separate the City from Upstate. Most of Upstate is just as red as Texas is. Maintrifool and Joan K are correct. This State is run by the City progressives (both parties). Upstate has a very different set off values and morals than the cretins in the city. Although there a few true conservatives in the City, it’s not enough to even register a blip on the scope. We are the initial battleground. Instead of leaving us for dead, support us. New York STATE is not lost yet. But we could use some help up here.

Jan. 22, 2013 at 5:35pmSee how easy it is, you simply limit a guns magazine size to something that is not manufactured, and presto – you have made all of these guns illegal. Then when the gun manufactures respond with a legal magazine, you change the limit one bullet lower and you have it again.
Just tell me, who sells a 7 round magazine for a 9mm or a 45? They wanted 5 so all six round revolvers would be over the limit as well.
Incremental banning of our 2nd amendment, one bullet, one gun type at a time.
When Eric Holder and his like stop giving AK-47′s to the gun cartels, MAYBE we could talk about citizens not needing fully automatic weapons…maybe. When the ATF stops storming the wrong house and murdering the wrong family – maybe then. When the government cares enough to actually punish hard core criminals instead of allowing the revolving door justice system – maybe then. Or when our nations answer to normal boys stops being psychotropic life long medication, and the answer to adult mental health stops simply pushing them into homelessness, then maybe. Or better yet, how about we continue to allow law abiding citizens to protect themselves with any means available to the criminal and judicial elements until the second coming of Jesus when we are promised peace by a source actually able to provide it – then, yes I will give up my guns, beating swords into plowshares.

I can only vote on a bill that is on the floor. The rejected proposals were rejected during negotiations which I was not a part of so…..when the bill came to the floor and it did not contain those rejected proposals, how would you like me to vote on them? It’ll be interesting, should something like this pass, what the specific wording of the law would be.
