On Monday, we talked about First Lady Michelle Obama and the eye-roll seen ’round the world after House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) made a joke during an inaugural luncheon:

At the time, we pointed out that the lack of audio in the above video makes it impossible for us to know what was said between President Obama and Speaker Boehner. Therefore, we can’t really know what prompted the First Lady to throw her eyeballs all the way back.

We did, however, quip that the Speaker — a notorious smoker — may have joked with the president about grabbing a cigarette.

And according to one expert, our cheeky analysis may not have been that far off.

Citing a recent report from Inside Edition (yeah, yeah, we know), The Hill explains the leading theory behind the First Lady’s eye-roll. Surprisingly enough, it involves having a smoke:

Larry Wenig, a lip-reading expert, tells “Inside Edition” that his analysis shows the Ohio Republican asked President Obama if he had a cigarette before the Monday luncheon.

While Obama quit smoking in 2010, Boehner still lights up. Obama has called giving up the habit for good “hard.”

According to Wenig, Boehner was referring to Michelle when he quipped to the commander in chief, “Somebody won’t let you do it.”

When asked by ITK [The Hill’s Gossip blog] about the lip-reader’s assertion, Boehner spokesman Michael Steel told The Hill in an email, “That is not true.”

So there you have it. A professional lip reader claims House Speaker Boehner was cracking wise about Obama grabbing a quick smoke after his inaugural speech.

Call off Encyclopedia Brown. We may have solved the mystery.
