Singer James Taylor on Gun Control: ‘We Need to Make Some Sacrifice[s] to Our Freedoms…to Safeguard Our Children’

Singer James Taylor Says Americans May Need to Sacrifice Gun Freedom to Protect Children | Obama

Singer James Taylor showered accolades upon President Barack Obama on Monday, calling the president the ultimate public servant and proclaiming that Americans “are very fortunate to have Barack Obama as our leader.”

While these comments are expected from a celebrity who unabashedly supported the president throughout his first and second campaigns, Taylor’s proclamations about gun control may trouble some Second Amendment enthusiasts.

During an interview with The Daily Caller yesterday, the singer said that Americans may need to sacrifice some of their liberties in order to protect society from gun violence. When asked to comment about whether he agrees with Obama’s recent executive orders targeting firearms and aimed at stemming violent crime, Taylor made an intriguing proclamation about sacrificing freedom. Before sharing his views, though, he did note that he does not know, in great detail, the contents of the president’s most recent executive orders.

“I think the nation is very divided on gun control, but I think the majority of us feel strongly — even the majority of gun owners feel strongly — that we need to make some sacrifice[s] to our freedoms, if that’s the way to put it,” he said. “We need to make some sacrifices to what we might want to have, in order to safeguard our children.”

As for the Founding Fathers, Taylor believes that, while they wanted Americans to have the right to arm themselves, there are limits to the Second Amendment’s reach.

“I think there’s a limit to how much — I think the founding fathers wanted us to be able to arm ourselves, but I don’t think that they would have agreed that we should have the capacity to do the damage that we do have,” the singer continued. “And we just can’t afford it.”

Mr. Taylor,
When you have given all of you freedoms over to the GOVERNMENT and they take total control do you really think that they will be concerned with how they can protect you or will it be more like what they can get from you?
If I recall, we fought a war against a King to gain our freedoms and now you would install another King to take back what we fought for. Shame on you.

How about some celebrities leading by example and say I want America to be safer and take a hack saw to their own guns, along with their armed body guards. Since it’s the guns killing kids and not the crazy people. Why would they want to be surrounded by them?

Heard a segment on NPR, that Lefty propaganda tool, this morning about a group of high school kids at the inauguration. They all sounded exactly the same : every sentence ended in a word with a raised inflection. Every sentence sounded like a question. Everyone sounded the same. Like Valley girls. Even the males. Like parrots, Like robots. And this, America, is the Media-raised, brainless, “collective,” new America: the perfect tools for Big Brother Media Government who is now in possession of their brains and their souls… sickening and frightening…

James Taylor’s “sacrifice” will cost us MILLIONS of children. How can Americans be this foolish? People like that don’t deserve freedom. By sacrificing their freedom for a false security, they will end up losing BOTH!

Laws restrict the actions of people who obey laws.
The problems we have had with gun violence all involve people who were breaking the law.
How will a new law help with that?

Has anyone asked him that question?

If someone was arrested for armed robbery, and when released he is told that the legislature has now passed a law that it is illegal to use guns with barrels longer than 6 inches in the commission of robberies – does he care?

Law abiding citizens by definition are not criminals. Murder and assault are by definition crimes. Criminals are by definition breaking the law. How does passing a new law change criminal behavior?

If someone is a responsible, law abiding citizen then why should we care what is in his gun safe any more than we care exactly what he and his wife do in the privacy of their bedroom? We care what criminals do with guns, because it could hurt us. Why does anyone care what non-criminals do with guns, since they are NOT hurting us?

Im from Carolina.Please dont send him back here. He was not from here, his atheist dad taught college at the liberal UNC for awhile. They were rich yankees from Boston that summered in Marthas Vineyard, and he is NOT a Tarheel, nor a southerner. Although I love his music, hearing it now disgusts me. I wish entertainers did jsut that…entertained. Playing political hack just kills the entertainment part.
