WASHINGTON (AP) — Senior defense officials say Pentagon chief Leon Panetta is removing the military’s ban on women serving in combat, opening hundreds of thousands of front-line positions and potentially elite commando jobs after more than a decade at war.

The groundbreaking move recommended by the Joint Chiefs of Staff overturns a 1994 rule prohibiting women from being assigned to smaller ground combat units. Panetta’s decision gives the military services until January 2016 to seek special exceptions if they believe any positions must remain closed to women.

A senior military official says the services will develop plans for allowing women to seek the combat positions. Some jobs may open as soon as this year. Assessments for others, such as special operations forces, including Navy SEALS and the Army’s Delta Force, may take longer.

The official said the military chiefs must report back to Panetta with their initial implementation plans by May 15. The announcement on Panetta’s decision is not expected until Thursday, so the official spoke on condition of anonymity.

Panetta’s move expands the Pentagon’s action nearly a year ago to open about 14,500 combat positions to women, nearly all of them in the Army. This decision could open more than 230,000 jobs, many in Army and Marine infantry units, to women.

In recent years the necessities of war propelled women into jobs as medics, military police and intelligence officers that were sometimes attached – but not formally assigned – to units on the front lines.

Women comprise 14 percent of the 1.4 million active military personnel.

  For all you women that enjoyed a special place in the hearts and minds of men, I’m sorry. For the rest of you, I guess you have brought on yourselves what you deserve. There used to be a consideration for women that we would take the hard, ugly, horrible jobs on ourselves, and save women from the horrors of war. But then, many so called women don’t want us to consider them a thing of beauty, better than ourselves, and worthy of our adoration. Again, you get what you deserve.

  I predict that the end of this will be less women in the military. Women, like doctors, who enlist in order to pay for their medical school will now not enlist for fear that this will lead to an insistence on combat. I mean what is their end game? Women’s choice??   So the outgoing secretary of defense declared today that the ban on women serving in combat has been lifted.
  
  This same day, an air force general declared that from 2011 to 2012, they have seen a 30% increases in sexual assaults and rapes.
  
  This year, the Army fired more brigade commanders, than at any time in US Army History. The majority of them were relieved for morality issues.
  
  Go figure, we drop DADT, and instead of calling it a moral issues, the leaders called it a leadership and respect issue. Sorry dudes, my moral compass does not change direction because of the results of an election. My ethics, morality, and knowledge of right and wrong are tied to the Bible, not to the opinions of Madonna, Obama, or Oprah. What was wrong twenty years ago, is wrong now.
  
  The modern day military is so beat down and castrated from the laws of political correctness, not a one of them can step up to the mic, and unleash truth.
  
  When we placed women much further to the front that ever before, and mixed them in with the combat units, we saw this rise in sexual assaults never seen before, but none of these educated so called “leaders” can seem to figure out why.
  
  Morality has been traded for popularity. Officers are now more worried about the thoughts of Jon Stewart, than the words of John Adams. Women get their cake and eat it too. They won’t ever be drafted for combat, it will always be voluntary. They love to fall back on the weaker sex routine when it is to their benefit. Constant commercials about women victims of domestic violence at the hands of evil men. You know a man has to be arrested at every call now to the police for hitting on a weak woman. Yet they are man enough to go to combat, the most masculine thing we do as humans. Of course, they won’t be expected to carry their weight, they never are, always different standards. It doesn’t matter anyway. Modern feminism has neutered the American male. They don’t dare stand up to women. Men have been pushed by the courts completely out of the American family. We are a nation of feminists, neutered men and homosexuals. We will never win another war anyway, we are too weak in the minds. Women don’t get strong in a society, men just get weak by comparison. Our enemies from male cultures will eventually destroy us, I guarantee it.

  I originally thought I had read in the goals for the CPUSA recorded in Jan 1963 congressional record that a goal was “feminization” of the culture and military”, but apparently this was added afterward. Nonetheless it’s clearly intended to contribute to the downfall of our society.

After Basic Training, I went through the U.S. Army Airborne School (as an 11 Bravo w/ Ranger contract): the women ran (were put) in front to keep the pace slow so as not to be left behind.

This move will WEAKEN our military. Isn’t that the point?

And for you idiot LIBERALS (sorry for being redundant), the Joint Chiefs is about as POLITICAL as you can get—hello, can you spell COLIN POWELL?

  A friend of mine really wanted to be a fireman. He volunteered for a long time but the fire department kept hiring women with less experience. He related to me that one time he was partnered with a woman to work as a team to fight a fire. He ended up dragging the hose up the hill by himself because she was doubled over puking after a few minutes in the heat. I’m all for letting women do work for which they are suited. If they can pull their own weight and keep up with their co-workers, then great; Equal pay for equal work. But getting a job because of your gender–no!

The only reason they are doing this is because many progs thinks woman are being discriminated against. Combat vets advance in rank faster than support troops. This is the real reason. Great thinking. The general reason women are excluded from combat in most societies isn’t that they’re “inferior” or “weak”, it’s that if you lose a large percentage of women in battle you lose the ability for the society to perpetuate after the war. You only need one man to impregnate ten women, but one woman can only get pregnant by one man. The math says, if you wipe out a bulk of your breeding aged women (which is the general age of folks in the military) in actions that involve a draft of all able bodies, such as, say, WWI (where entire cities of men across the West vanished in battle), then you have nobody reproducing to numbers sufficient to keep your society viable even if you do win the war.

Some places you have to have women doing this (Israel comes to mind) due to being sheerly outnumbered. We don’t have that constraint, so there’s no reason for this at all here.

Bad move. But hey, Progressives are all about wiping out Western civilization.

Opening up combat positions to women is reverse discrimination to men.
Reasons: Women cannot pack as much gear.
Women have more hygiene problems which takes them out of service.
Women get pregnant which takes them out of service for six weeks; men don’t get six
weeks maternity leave.
I could probably think of more reasons why this is a stupid idea. I am a female veteran; I should know.

  My son is a Marine Infantryman. He just did a year in Afghanistan. He is 6’2″ 220lbs, works out 3 hours a day. He broke his ankle climbing off an MRAP. He said the vehicles are so big he had to jump for the bottom rung of the ladder to climb on. Their armor weighs 60 lbs. Their packs weigh 80 lbs, not including water, weapon, and ammo. They have to be able to carry a wounded soldier off the field. The strongest woman could not do what the weakest Marine can do in the field. Not to mention the social fracturing of the unit that contains a woman. This is just another progressive step on the road to destroying our military.

  I agree, I am a female veteran and just retired from the Army. I don’t think the military will get alot of female volunteers to go to combat. There was a poll taken about it. Most of the young females want marriage and children and that physical stress on their bodies will tear down. A Marine Cpt went thru that and now she cannot have children.

  Well… we still have mandatory selective service registration for males over the age of 18. It’s time the ladies had to fill out the card as well. If you’re a male and you fail to do it, you can’t get gov’t tuition loans etc. The girls shouldn’t skate on that by any means. If we are going to do this, we should go with the Israeli model, at least as far as signing up is concerned. Although, a draft might leave us with a better more enlightened class of citizen in the long run.

He seen a 98lb woman kick the crap out of two or three 300lb men so he told his wife; hay hunny, we can put thes women in combat units.
