‘Umm. Ooops.’: The Top 5 Answers to Hillary Clinton’s Benghazi Question of ‘What Difference…Does It Make?’
When Secretary of State Hillary Clinton faced down Sen. Ron Johnson and asked exasperatedly, “What difference at this point does it make” why the attacks in Benghazi happened, she must have known it would spur controversy.
Even if she didn’t, it has. Specifically, a whole host of right-leaning commentators have leaped at the chance to answer Clinton’s entirely rhetorical question. Below are the 5 best responses from those commentators.
#5. Redstate blogger Moe Lane
“It matters because – contra Hillary Clinton’s tacit attitude, and frankly, contra Barack Obama’s tacit attitude, too – the US government exists for the benefit of its citizens, and it is responsive to the desires and opinions of its citizens. Not the other way around. When one of our people gets killed, the government has no right to hide the reason, despite how personally or professionally embarrassing that the reason might be. And it is especially important that American voters be told what is actually happening, because – and this will be a shock to the Democratic party, I’m sure – American foreign policy is ultimately supposed to be reflective of the will of the American electorate.”
#4. Columnist Debra J. Saunders
“There’s a big difference between a 9/11 attack that stems from a protest, some guys out for a walk, and a concerted terrorist attack on an American mission. If it was just a protest or guys out for a walk, the U.S. response and efforts to prevent a repeat must be very different than the reaction to a planned, armed attack to kill an American ambassador and staff. If it’s a protest or a rogue attack, routine security changes must occur. If it was a planned terrorist attack — and I think we know it was — Washington has to re-think its assumptions.”
#3. Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin
“It doesn’t matter if the administration lied? Umm. Ooops. That will make the anti-Hillary ads if she runs in 2016. The New Media and conservative Republicans pounced. But more important has been Clinton’s acknowledgement as to how dangerous and widespread al-Qaeda is in Northern Africa. This is directly contrary to the Obama-Hagel meme that we have decimated al-Qaeda and really don’t need that big military any more. Clinton in essence just told the president his idea that we have ‘peace in our time’ is crazy talk. Perhaps Clinton should be brought in as a witness in the Chuck Hagel secretary of defense hearings. By the Republicans.”
#2. National Review’s Eliana Johnson
”Clinton’s dismissal of the impetus behind the attack also stands in stark contrast to nearly everything senior officials of the Obama administration said publicly about it in the days that followed, including both the president and Clinton herself — that is, when the administration was blaming the attack on a YouTube video. In opening remarks for a strategic dialogue with Morocco — video below — which occurred four days after the Benghazi attack, Clinton said, ‘There is no justification, none at all, for responding to this video with violence. We condemn the violence that has resulted in the strongest terms.’ The idea that the cause of the attack should now take a backseat to other concerns seems all too convenient. “
#1. Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey
“Well, gosh, I can think of a few reasons why it matters. First, it mattered enough for the Obama administration to send Susan Rice to five different Sunday talk shows to insist that the sacking was a spontaneous demonstration of anger over a months-old YouTube video, while saying that there was ‘no evidence’ that it was a terrorist attack.[...] It also matters because Barack Obama at the time had been bragging about crippling al-Qaeda while on the campaign trail.[...] There’s also the matter of Barack Obama’s intervention in Libya and his undeclared war against Moammar Qaddafi.”

Posted on January 23, 2013 at 7:30pmThe questions remain: Why was the ambassador in Benghazi in the first place; why was he meeting with the Turkish Pro-Counsel? The president gave the order to stand-down! Generals are fired or quit. Pertinent questions are not being asked and stonewalling is the SOP for even the soft questions. Is there a protocol that when personnel are questioned by congress that they are provided with those questions beforehand? Hillary seemed to reference pages in her notes readily as she responded.

Posted on January 23, 2013 at 7:20pmWhat difference does it make? Hilliary is an incredibly brilliant woman. She asked a profoundly great question. She’s absolutely right. It made no difference at all. Not now and not at the time. That’s the question that should have been asked to Obama when they excused the actions of the terrorists by blaming the video. She’s right. Think about it. What difference did it make on why our embassy was attacked and why our people were killed.
Yet instead of a response to the action or ordering a counter attack to try to rescue our people, they acted liked alqueada’s mouth piece and condemned a video over and over again, for almost 2 weeks on various news programs. Hilliary is right but she asked the question too late. They essentially justified the attack by blaming the video over and over again. The real question now is why did they spend so much time trying to justify the action of the terrorists? Why did it matter? Were they saying that some how the attack was justified because a private citizen posted a video on youtube?
It seemed to matter a great deal to the administration then. Why I wonder?

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 11:21pmIn the months prior to the 9/11 Benghazi attack, Hillary was partying it up royal instead of being a professional Secretary of State. She got lax. Hillary lived and breathed on power. She got lazy. Hillary partied and left the dirty work to her staff.
Also, in the months prior to the 9/11 Benghazi attack, Obama was golfing and vacationing and campaigning for 2nd term. And he also got lax and lazy. Visits to the “View”…hob-nobbing with Hollywood…etc.
Then the enemy does what it always does: rub salt into the wound….another day of 9/11. In my opinion: both the President and Sec. of State began blaming someone else, anyone…
It’s called “redirect the attention to something/someone else”. But the very vain, egotistical, prideful people don’t realize that we’re not that dumb. We know the truth. And you will get away with it.
But God does not forget. And neither do we. REMEMBER BENGHAZI !!

if you honestly expect to include in your ‘possibles’ a group out walking around as cause, you may be trying to prove you are inept and unable to think critically, but that does not absolve you and the administration of guilt in at least the later deaths of the last two Americans…
go out to an army training base, madam secretary… watch how a morter is deployed and utilized. it is a Crew Served Weapon… even if you have one laying around at the house, you cannot just use it because you feel like blowing up the safeway down the street. it’s presence is clear proof of an organized attack, and your choosing to ignore that renders you incompetent to serve as secretary (or president), or demonstrates you are LYING to hide a larger underlying truth that would be damaging to you or the Administration.

That said, here’s another answer that should make at least the top 10 list…
If it mattered that an Administration lied to the American people about a minor break-in in which no damage was done and no lives were lost but a law was boken, why does it not matter this time, when damage *was* done, lives *were* lost, laws *were* (arguably) broken …but you’re the one in the hot seat?

Posted on January 23, 2013 at 4:47pmWell, I can think of at least 4 good reasons, Tyrone Woods, Glen Doherty, Sean Smith, and Ambassador Chris Stevens are why it matters. This administration left them in a war zone with no support. They let them die, just as surely as they pulled the trigger themselves. Then they BLATANTLY lied to the American people and the world. And Mrs. Clinton has the audacity to say “What difference… does it make now?”. It definitely makes a difference to the families; they have a right to know why their loved ones perished. We failed them. Obviously, the lives of those killed were all expendable to this administration. And undoubtably, so are the lives of every other American. There is no room for compassion, empathy, understanding, or common sense within a narcissistic entity. These people just don’t care. They are all treasonous. There is NO excuse. May God Bless the USA! We need Him now more than ever.

Posted on January 23, 2013 at 4:41pmWhile the “difference” of whether the Benghazi attack was due to a protest or terror attack would not change the outcome for the ambassador and the three other Americans who died in Benghazi, it does matter whether the rest of us can believe the prepared and coordinated explanations our government leaders provide following such tragic events. If you can’t tell us the truth for security reasons, tell us that. Don’t insult us by spinning a tale of a video protest and then using our tax dollars for a PR campaign in the middle east to denounce the video and its now imprisoned maker. Truth matters! In addition, it is very disturbing that the administration seems to have trouble properly accessing the difference between terror and protest. With the help of the media, they are quick to insinuate that seniors at a Tea Party rally as potential terrorists, yet cannot bring themselves to call out the real terrorists. So, yeah, it makes a difference–both from a trust standpoint and a security concern.

There is no reason to believe that any action that the President or Secretary of State could have taken would have saved the lives of any of those four people. At a time when many of our embassies were under attack, in all cases but this one by unruly mobs of civilians, ordering a counterattack could have aggravated the situation in a way that would have led to the death of many more than four people.

A lie to the American people – who employ the government – is a lie. It doesn’t matter if the lie is intended to cover up a criminal act, such as breaking and entering or something that “simply” resulted in the death of four people. Yeah, a lie is a lie, but people are allowed to lie when they aren’t under oath. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to vote for them, but there’s really nothing else anybody can do about it, so it’s pretty much a waste of time to have some big investigation just to determine if somebody did something that they are allowed to do.

Posted on January 23, 2013 at 4:20pmTalk about 5 right wing straw man arguments.
The question the aptly named Mr. Johnson was asking was why State did not question the embassy evacuees immediately after the attack and communicate (via Ms. Rice) that attacks were the result of protests. To which Mr. Clinton replied that the FBI was already questioning the embassy evacuees and State did not want to interfere. State now acknowledges that attackers were terrorist’s militants and not protesters.
So what difference does it make at this time since we know the initial story was wrong?
State was trying to get information in real time without access to the people who were actually there.

Everyone knows the first draft is either always incomplete or entirely wrong.
It doesn’t matter, most people here think that the POTUS and State are inherently evil and their first instinct was to concoct a cover up.
But why would you do that if the cover-up inevitably falls apart in a matter of weeks and the election was two months away. The only way a cover up would even be possible woulbe be if State was able control the flow of information, but this happened in a chaotic environment in a foreign country which is basically just slightly above a failed state.

Posted on January 23, 2013 at 6:31pmThe president was still blaming the video almost two weeks later. You’re right, there may indeed be some initial confusion for a day or two but not two weeks. The reason it matters is either they were seeking to cover up something that would have looked bad on the eve of an election or they are just utterly incompetent and were willing to jump the gun and blame the video and a spontaneous demonstration without having “all the facts.” Neither of them look good. Nixon was impeached (well technically he resigned) for lying about a far less serious incident than this.

Posted on January 23, 2013 at 9:01pmHate to break it to you , but the video did play a role in the attacks, yes it’s true there was no protest and it was an organize terror attached, but the video did contribute.
Sept. 13: NY Times: “Turmoil Over Contentious Video Spreads.” The New York Times reported on September 13 that “deadly outrage in the Arab world over an American-made video insulting Islam’s founder” had “spread to at least half a dozen places across the Middle East,” including Iran, Yemen, Tunisia, Sudan and Pakistan. The article also reported that “at least five Yemenis were killed” when hundreds of protesters stormed the American Embassy in Sana, Yemen
An October 15 New York Times article reported that the people who attacked the U.S. compound in Benghazi said that the anti-Muslim film prompted the attack. Furthermore, Libyans “who witnessed the assault and know the attacks” also said the video was the catalyst for the attack.
Google Blocked Access To Inflammatory Video In Egypt And Libya; Government Authorities Blocked The Video In Singapore And Iran. The New York Times reported on September 13 that Google, the owner of YouTube, had blocked access to the anti-Muslim video in Egypt and Libya, and Agence France-Presse reported on September 20 that Google had blocked access to the video in Singapore. CNN later reported that government officials in Iran had blocked access to the video, while the Associated Press reported officials in Turkey planned to do so.

Posted on January 23, 2013 at 4:18pmI’d like to know why it was weeks before the FBI was permitted to even enter the compound to conduct their investigation and then once they did, they were there only for one day…in that morning and out by sundown. Maybe because, like the Vince Foster investigation, evidence had to be disposed of first and the outcome already determined for them before they even put foot to soil…the rest was window dressing.

Posted on January 23, 2013 at 4:20pmJohn Galt…..Billions die…….What makes you think you’re not a useful idiot? You have some kind of ‘time machine’ or what? You are in the middle of it all, just like everyone else…..There are a lot of people who see what’s going on….what have you got to say? What are you doing or planning…..I think you are displaying a greater ignorance of the truth than your “useful Idiots”. Arrogance, in the face of disaster……
