George Tunis is a CEO of Hardwire LLC, a successful American manufacturing company that makes high-tech protection for America’s military. Tunis likes to say that his company is “a bunch of engineers who invent things… the passion of our company is inventing life-saving things.”
In December, George and his young son were watching the horrific details of the Sandy Hook Elementary School murders on television and when he saw the fear in his son’s eyes, his engineering brain kicked in. He said to his son, “We can fix this. We have to do something.”
Less than a month later, Tunis and his company unveiled a product that he hopes will never have to be used – bulletproof dry erase boards and clipboards for teachers.

These very lightweight, bulletproof whiteboards can be used by teachers and students as protection from a shooter.
The boards work just like the typical erasable whiteboards found in schools and offices around the world, except they’re bulletproof (even at close range), easily removed from walls and light enough to be carried as a shield against bullets. The Maryland-based defense contractor has only recently started selling these boards to schools. Based on the initial reaction, demand will likely be very strong.

Tunis said that clipboard and the riot shields also used by police departments, were part of Hardwire’s diversification program. But they also provided some of the inspiration for the dry erase boards the company’s now offering to schools.

According to Tunis, last summer he decided to make a small, bulletproof board that would slide into his son’s backpack…”just in case.” Little did he know that this idea would soon be something parents all across the country would be looking to add to the backpacks of their children.
The bulletproof whiteboards for teachers come in two different sizes, 18in x 20in and a smaller clipboard sized model that is 12 inches by 8 1/2 inches. They are about five times more expensive than standard dry erase boards, but they do have a definite advantage — they can stop multiple bullets fired at close range.
The company’s video demonstrates:
Hardwire’s CEO wants these boards to be seen as teaching tools that can also empower educators. Their appearance is non-threatening and therefore, not a distraction. However, should a situation arise, the dry erase boards are instantly available as shields against virtually every firearm a bad guy could bring into a school. The company outfitted a local school in Maryland with 90 of the bulletproof boards.
“Imagine 90 teachers walking with a wall of bulletproof boards,” Tunis said. “If you’re a bad guy, your plan just got changed.”
Watch him explain more about how the product came about, below:
- 18 inches x 20 inches in size.
- Blends well with classroom – no psychological impact on students.
- Perfect for highly interactive teaching.
- Easy-to-hold handles for portability.
- Weighs less than four pounds.
- Covers the head and torso.
- Provides protection to National Institute of Justice standards.
- Absorbs multiple clips of ammunition without ricochet or injury.
Tunis is hoping that other companies will follow its example and step up to donate these boards to schools. They have started a program that will encourage companies to “adopt” schools and outfit them with the bulletproof whiteboards.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 9:51amAbsolutely AWESOME.
The only thing I can think of that would be better is making their backpack insert a whiteboard as well so that the student can put in in the backpack and take it out and have it at their desk while at school. Protection to and from school and during and whenever the child is wearing the backpack during off school hours like camping, hiking, or just around town as some do.
Already emailed the company about the idea..an 18×13 backpack insert ballistic whiteboard. I would buy them in a heartbeat, even if my district decides to let me conceal carry, I would still get these for my children and myself.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 6:35pmHere’s an idea. Since having a handle behind a shield makes it much easier to use (25 years doing medieval reenacting so I do speak from experience here.) Why not mount the whiteboard to a frame with a holster for an ASP baton of something similar attached to the back. Personally, I’d prefer a handgun, but some people are squeamish about guns. Then the teacher could have a handle on the back to be able to better control the shield with one hand, and at least a functional weapon that they could strike the assailant with in the other. I know a number of teachers in the Phoenix area that would eat most firearm equipped attackers alive with such a set up.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 9:17amIt is better than thin air which is all teachers have now. I agree that teachers, who so choose, should be trained and armed. The is white board can offer a higher degree of protection for the teacher who is unarmed. It also provides protection for the teacher who is armed and acts.
This is probably not sufficient on it’s own but it is American innovation at work.

I hate to say this, but you don’t need a gun to murder elementary school children.
All is needed is your hands.
If this is in the hands of a trained and armed person it is somewhat effective.
Not for children.

OK so its too dangerous to give staff firearms and firearms training but we are going to teach them to walk directly into rifle fire holding a white board?
I think you would have a hard time getting our best trained, most disciplined military units to do that…
How about this; instead of instruct people to act like sheep, why don’t we teach them to resist, and fight back when attacked?
This doesn’t necessarily mean firearms; We need staff and teachers to adopt the mentality that they will not allow themselves to become victims; and teach them that they should resist by any means available.
Obviously firearms are the best tool for stopping an aggressor, but ordinary classroom items; staplers, pencils, iPads etc could be used as a weapon by a person who is determined to survive.
I know some might consider that “crazy talk” but the Ghandi method doesn’t seem to be working out to well…

Jan. 24, 2013 at 10:31amThey don’t teach children to defend themselves in school anymore. I know from experience as a police officer that when there is a school fight now. They punish both children and where I worked signed charges against both for fighting. Lesson taught there is no you are not allowed to defend yourself. It used to be the one that started it all was the one that got in trouble because they were the aggressor. Now the one defending themselves also gets hung out to dry. Sad it is.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 9:13amWhile this would be a help, nothing will replace a couple of Deputies or Police personell in the school. they can be backed up with several HIGHLY SCREENED AND TRAINED teachers or janitorial personell an backup. The last resort could be the whiteboards. Stored in a compartment attached to each desk and having students practice with them just as they do with fire and tornado drills. that way, the use of them would become second nature to the kids.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 8:29amImagine a 3 foot tall kid holding that armor plate….. A 5 foot tall shooter will shoot the kid from above and the armor plate will not be useful. Also, like someone els mentioned, a little kid will fly backwards when the bulet from a handgun will hit that armor plate. Having personal shield for every kid…… Aren’t the schools “gun free zones”?????? So why have Hesse shields? Because criminals ont care about any laws you might pass. Laws don’t defer criminals, fear does. Hire of duty police officers to work at schools and let them carry concealed. Let the criminals know that they will be shot if they are trying to kill inocent kids in schools. When the first one try something and turns into Swiss cheese, show that video on national TV every day and then they will think about. Folks, being nice sounds really good but it doesn’t work in real life. The word is full of bad people. They are among us. Like it or not.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 8:03amHigh v rifle rounds or ktw rounds might still be a problem, and to have one per student I bet a school could spend less reinforcing the doors AND purchasing a defensive ar. Unless thee is a ready escape route, this would not offer durable protection.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 8:00amHate to be critical, but the stomach through groin area is no protected. One bullet into that region would probably put the teacher on the ground. These murders for the most part go after student. Dead bolt locks on all classroom doors would be more effective. As in many schools here in Texas, resident campus cops would be a great help. But as long as schools are gun free zones, students will be open to these murders. A teacher crouched down with a .45 semiautomatic 14 round pistol aiming at the classroom door would be deterrent enough. Unfortunately now, only until the police arrive and after an unacceptable long period to organize the troop entry, much carnage will have already been done. But government doesn’t see ordinary people as being intelligent enough to do anything right, that is unless that have become part of the government itself.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 7:59amIs this better than nothing ? Yes. But putting an 18 x 20 “shield” between yourself and an AR-15 or any other Gun is not much.
How about stopping someone from getting in our Schools in the first place !! This is like taking away a Drunks Alcohol AFTER they drive a Truck through a crowd of People.
And how about the cost ? I doubt these are cheap. I think it’s much better to employ someone to guard our Schools than to spend money on this. And how about doing a better job of taking care of the mentally ill in America in the first place.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 7:33amSo called “bulletproof” items are not all equal (neither is ammunition, but I digress). There are many types of “bulletproof” items, and they’re offered at different levels of protection (called types).
If this board weighs under 4 pounds, it probably doesn’t offer Type III protection (meaning it WILL NOT stop a rifle round). If you were attacked by a guy with one of those big black evil assault rifles (yes, that’s sarcasm), all this board would do is ensure the shooter doesn’t get blood splattered on him as the round goes through the board and you. It probably would stop SOME types of pistol rounds. Because the article doesn’t identify the type of protection, it’s hard to say.
The article says this item “Provides protection to National Institute of Justice standards”. Sounds awesome! Now identify what type, please.
We really don’t have to search for alternative solutions, the solution is right in front of our face (what happened to common sense?). TRAIN, CERTIFY and ARM TEACHERS (not all, but a percentage)!

Jan. 24, 2013 at 7:27amI don’t see how these would do any good. The police use them, but as the photo shows, they have a gun they use in conjunction. Besides, a teacher holding one doesn’t exactly protect the children.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 9:16amPlease, it’s only in Hollywood where the impact of a bullet knocks someone backwards through the air. The bullet going forward has the same force as the recoil force on the shooter (check with Newton on this), concentrated on a smaller area of the bullet nose obviously, but no more total force was magically generated in flight.
Did you see the whiteboard in the video at the times of bullet impact? Certainly not a sledge hammer blow that would knock an adult off his feet. Take a look at combat footage, like the D-Day landings, men just fell in the tracks after being hit by large caliber, high power rounds.
Unfortunately, what I see is a teacher, hysterical, huddling in the corner holding up the whiteboard as a shooter advances and does whatever he wants in regard to target selection.
Passivity is the government approved defense these days… can’t we all just get along?
