Dems Reintroduce ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban (and List Shows It’s Not Just Rifles): ‘Purpose Is to Dry Up the Supply of These Weapons Over Time’

Congressional Democrats are reintroducing legislation to ban assault weapons but the measure faces long odds in the GOP-controlled House of Representatives.

The measure being unveiled Thursday is authored by Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, who wrote the original assault weapons ban. That law expired in 2004 when Congress refused to renew it. There’s much disagreement about the effectiveness of the original assault weapons ban.

“The purpose is to dry up the supply of these weapons over time,” Feinstein said on Capitol Hill Thursday, flanked by several “assault” weapons. “Therefore there is no sunset on this bill.”

Feinstein’s sweeping legislation includes a ban on weapons with any “one military characteristic,” and bans the “import, export, manufacture, sale and transfer of hundreds of semi-automatic rifles, handguns and some shotguns,” Townhall’s Katie Pavlich reports.

In other words, the ban doesn’t just cover the “scary” AR-15 and AK-47 semi-automatic rifles. Here’s the list of more than 150 guns that would be banned under Feinstein’s plan. Freelance journalist Jonathan Krohn told TheBlaze that the list was handed out at Thursday’s announcement on Capitol Hill, which he was covering. It looks even more sweeping on paper.

Watch Feinstein’s Thursday announcement via the Washington Free Beacon:

The National Rifle Association promptly responded to Democrats’ proposed gun ban on Thursday and called on Congress to “reject” Sen. Feinstein’s bill. The NRA released the following statement:

Senator Feinstein has been trying to ban guns from law-abiding citizens for decades. It’s disappointing but not surprising that she is once again focused on curtailing the Constitution instead of prosecuting criminals or fixing our broken mental health system. The American people know gun bans do not work and we are confident Congress will reject Senator Feinstein’s wrong-headed approach.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) released his own statement in response to Feinstein’s gun ban proposal on Thursday afternoon:

Washington politicians shouldn’t be taking advantage of recent tragedy to try to push an aggressive gun control agenda. Real assault weapons—machine guns—are already functionally illegal, and they have been since 1934. This proposal would have done nothing to prevent the terrible murders in Newtown, but it would limit the constitutional liberties of law-abiding citizens. And gun control doesn’t work – the empirical data overwhelmingly demonstrate that strict gun-control laws consistently produce more crime and more murders.

The Second Amendment exists to ensure that law-abiding Americans can protect their homes and families, and I look forward to helping lead the fight to defeat this bill and to protect our constitutional right to keep and bear arms.

An assault weapons ban is among the measures supported by President Barack Obama, who unveiled a package of gun safety proposals last week. But because of concerns among moderate Democrats it’s seen as a heavy lift in Congress, with measures such as beefed-up background checks more likely to pass.

At the heart of the debate, President Barack Obama and Democrats are claiming that banning so-called “assault weapons” will make Americans more safe.

The truth is much more complicated. The use of handguns in gun-related homicides is roughly 70 to 80 percent in most states, 24/7 Wall St. notes. Meanwhile, the use of rifles is under 5 percent, and use of shotguns about 5 percent. Knives are nearly always used in more murders than rifles or shotguns, according to FBI data.

24/7 Wall St.’s Douglas A. McIntyre suggests the federal government should make more of an effort to gather data on gun violence from local authorities in order to take meaningful action.

“The problem that the lack of data causes is about how to determine which guns might or might not be regulated more carefully,” he writes.

I listened to the entire 6 minutes. My ears are bleeding as we speak. She talked about weapons that are designed to be “shot from the hip.” WTH? Did she watch Rambo right before she came over? Woman is absolutely nuts. And she said that since the assault weapons ban was lifted in 2004 there have been 350 people killed by “assault weapons”. I thought that number was from 2011. If it really is only 350 in 8 years then she is smoking peyotee. She said we should be outraged at that many people dying. Really? Nevermind the countless other methods that people are murdered by that far exceed 350. Rot in hell Senator Feinstein!

Not to mention the fact that most of those 350 “people” killed were gang-banging punks. Hell, we are better off without them anyway. But, we all know facts do not mean squat to a commie pinko Illuminati.

This has nothing to do with saving children. Commonsense doesnt tie together this new bill with with saving the lives of children. If your attention span doesnt go past the kardashians and snooki you might believe this bill was meant to save lives. It is for something along the lines of long term progressive control.

Who in the hell is even discussing these gun bans with the libbies? There are no discissions or debates necessary.

‘… the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

For those on the left who have comprehension problems….this means there is no debate, there are no discussions, there are no back-door deals or legislation, there are no executive orders that can over-ride the 2nd amendment.

Believe me it is a very frustrating experience being a conservative in California. Our senators are two of the worst. Our governor screwed up California the first time and the people put him there again to finish the job. Our ballots are full of screwball ideas that often pass. My wife and I go vote and when we see the results of the elections we’re stunned. And now, people like Feinstein want to export the madness to the rest of the states. I’m sorry folks but you might as well go into mourning now because it looks like America is on the critical list.

Question. Are those LE lined up behind her under orders to be there or did they volunteer? I assuming they either go along with this or are corrupted beyond redemption or both. I’m also assuming they are from the NE which would explain a lot. Our son is a PO in a major SW city. They have already discussed possible confiscation orders from their pure, political command staff. The rank & file Will Not Comply! They will not carry out any unlawful order and will obey their oath to the Constitution. The local Sheriffs (maybe the most powerful and influential LE around here) have also publicly stated their refusal to comply. This will not go well as the Marxists smell blood and overreach.

      M14,
We must all take careful note of the faces and names of the goons on that stage and elsewhere when they appear. All patriots must become aware of all strategic targets in advance. That includes personnel and property/equipment. Defending the constitution for our kids will not be pretty. Being forced to kill others is the most awful thing a man can imagine. It is not fun. It is not a game. But, if it must be done, then so be it.

@Tommy. Yep. There are 2 schools of thought. One 1 hand, why should we be afraid of speaking out? Why should we allow the regime to dictate what we say in public? Screw them. On the other hand, opsec. If you really think something very bad is ahead, keep a low profile. Stay off their radar screen as much as possible. IF that’s even possible anymore. If action is ahead, winning THAT, is more important than spouting off here. But then again, here I am spouting off here. LOL. Any type of regulation on arms is unconstitutional. Constitutionally I am ALLOWED to own whatever arms I can afford, that includes a tank, a missile launcher, an F18, whatever. Now, being ABLE to buy one is another matter but I am ALLOWED to by the constitution.

Not only won’t I comply, I will openly defy this. The nice thing is, it really has no chance whatsoever. Though if the GOP caves, they are signing something much bigger than their ejection from officer, they would in fact be signaling the beginning of a civil war. Thousands and thousands of armed (locked and loaded even) individuals showed up at the state capitols across the nation this last Saturday with “Come take it!” flags and signs. That kind of anger and showing up locked and loaded at capitol buildings NEVER turns out well for oppressors throughout history.

You ready for this, progressives? Your arrogance blinds you, and you’ve underestimated your foe. This is a fight you cannot win, and God only knows what horror lay in store for you after you lose. You may wish to step back from your echo chambers and reconsider, while you still can.

Okay all you “gunners” out there. We don’t want to hear your conspiracy theories about how they are going to come take your guns. They just are going to require you to register them so when you are seen with one you can be checked to make sure you had it before the ban. Really now nothing to see here at all. No government run by a communist regime has ever taken guns from the citizens. That is all a big conspiracy. You are all just a bunch of “gunners”.

Moron history has shown time and time again that the government taking away guns turns into a dictatorship. This is a start in taking them away, if you register your gun that means they know you have a gun and will come to try to take it away. You kid yourself if you think they won’t.

Building a bigger and meaner Frankenstein.
There is a larger reason than they admit for wanting to ban these weapons. If she pulls this off again with a new law, they will set their sites on all handguns next. Simply because more murders are committed with handguns now anyway. She knows that if she can get this one into law, it will be even easier for the next gun grab. Besides, its all for the children.
