Nations Biggest Sports and Outdoor Show Postponed Indefinitely Following Massive Boycott Over New Policy Banning Semi Automatic Rifles

The largest sports and outdoor show in the United States has been postponed indefinitely following severe backlash over a recently enacted policy banning the display and sale of “modern sporting rifles,” or semi-automatic rifles. The Harrisburg Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show was originally scheduled for Feb. 2-10 in Harrisburg, Pa.

To put it into perspective how quickly gun owners pushed back, consider that the new policy was implemented on Monday and just five days later, on Friday, the show was postponed indefinitely amid the outcry.

Reed Exhibitions, the British-based organizer of the event, has not showed any sign of backing down on its ban of “modern sporting rifles.” Chet Burchett, president of Reed Exhibitions for the Americas, released the following statement:

“Our original decision not to include certain products in the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show this year was made in order to preserve the event’s historical focus on the hunting and fishing traditions enjoyed by American families. In the current climate, we felt that the presence of MSRs [modern sporting rifles] would distract from the theme of hunting and fishing, disrupting the broader experience of our guests.

It is unfortunate that in the current emotionally charged atmosphere this celebratory event has become overshadowed by a decision that directly affected a small percentage of more than 1,000 exhibits showcasing products and services for those interested in hunting and fishing. ESS has long been proud to participate in the preservation and promotion of hunting and fishing traditions, and we hope that as the national debate clarifies, we will have an opportunity to consider rescheduling the event when the time is right to focus on the themes it celebrates.”

The decision to ban legal rifles prompted boycotts by several companies, celebrities, conservation groups, outdoor media and outfitters including Cabela’s, Rough Country Outfitters, Ruger Firearms, Rough Country Outfitters, Ruger Firearms, International Bowhunting Organization, IScope, J & M Traditions, Katahdin’s Shadow Outfitters, Keystone Country Store, Major League Bowhunter, Masterpiece Outdoors, Inc. and hundreds more, Townhall’s Katie Pavlich reports.

“It’s a shame that it had to come to this and we feel sorry for everyone that has been affected by it,” Pat Ronsenberry, manager of Keystone Country Store, told TheBlaze. “I think Reed [Exhibitions] made a big business mistake on their behalf and everyone is kind of suffering from it.”

Rosenberry said the backlash stems from the wide support for the Second Amendment as it is written in the Constitution. One of the unintended consequences, she explained, is several vendors who aren’t even involved with the gun industry are being hurt by the decision.

Joe Staudt, owner of Staudt’s Gun Shop based in Harrisburg, Pa., told TheBlaze that the organizer’s decision was “very troubling” and it only “enables people to attack the Second Amendment.”

“My initial reaction when they decided to ban these rifles was obviously the fact that these weapons are perfectly legal,” he said. “A lot of states will allow people to hunt with a semi-automatic rifle so this term ‘assault weapon’ doesn’t really apply.”

Staudt said his company’s Facebook page was flooded with angry customers urging them to boycott the Harrisburg Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show. He added that he couldn’t in good conscience support the show without feeling like he was supporting their flawed policy.

The National Rifle Association, a huge sponsor of the show, also released a statement Tuesday and announced it would be withdrawing from the show due to Reed Exhibitions’ ban on “modern sporting rifles.”

“Due to Reed Exhibitions’ refusal to reconsider their decision to ban Modern Sporting Rifles from the February 2-10 Eastern Sports Show in Harrisburg, PA, the National Rifle Association has decided to withdraw from the show. We had called on Reed Exhibitions to reconsider their decision; unfortunately they have steadfastly refused to do so. As a result, the NRA will not be participating in the upcoming show in Harrisburg or in any other shows hosted by Reed Exhibitions that maintain this policy. We are disappointed that Reed Exhibitions has ignored the concerns expressed by attendees, the outdoor industry and the NRA in not reconsidering their position to ban the display of Modern Sporting Rifles.”

Reed had initially refused to refund the fees to exhibitors, but changed their decision after the show was shut down, Townhall reports.

“Refunds will be provided for all fees paid to date (January 24, 2013) to Reed Exhibitions for the 2013 Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show. We will detail the refund process on our web site and in an additional email by January 31, 2013,” Reed Exhibitions reportedly wrote in an email to exhibitors Thursday.

In an effort to recoup any money and effort lost as a result of the show’s cancellation, Tom McConnell of MyNorthEastOutdoors.com will hold a “virtual show” for vendors on Feb. 2-10.

“This now will allow the vendors to sell their products online through this common market place, without the fret of having to make up huge monetary losses due to REED Exhibitions stance on weapons bans at the show,” he wrote in a statement.

“We will launch the Virtual Sports Show on Feb 2nd and run through Feb 10th, 2013.  Only vendors who have boycotted the show will be permitted to have products on the website during this time.”

    This is an example of their overreaching. The left are exposed now and Americans are seeing them in all their wolfish glory. I keep believing there must be a line in the sand somewhere for average Americans. I think we may have found it. I thought there had been an awakening in 09 and 10
    I pray this is really it. How the Republic survives the next 4 years is beyond my ability to see, at least as a 50 state Republic.

      Why do you need to walk around with a semi-automatic? Hunting with one of those things is as much of a non-sport as NASCAR is (amazing how they push on the pedal like that!)

      A government that can shoot a missile from outerspace and hit a fly right in the a** isn’t going to be scared of your AR-55′s – this whole “counter government” power reason for the 2nd amendment is such BS.

When will your type understand that us hunters are doing a service with our semi autos to protect wildlife habitat, eliminate animals that will wipe out deer and elk herds in very little time. You want to introduce wolves that wipe out cattle farms, deer herds, elk and even bison. Hunters do more for conservation then you and your liberal Wacko friends can even comprehend.

      I saw on the news all the “dangerous” things they want to ban. Like the cosmetic stuff of the AR-15. Not that it has anything to do with how it functions with regard to being semi-automatic or fully automatic. If I didn’t know better I’d think they were simply ignorant…but they know taking little by little will add up to something big.

      You do understand what semi-automatic means right? It means when I squeeze the trigger it will fire once, then I have to let go of the trigger, squeeze again to fire another round. Fully automatic means as long as I have ammo and as long as the trigger is held down the gun will keep firing.

      It’s not BS, it’s a fact. That’s the whole purpose of it. Maybe they won’t, but having weapons is better than not having weapons.

      I have a gun, and I never just walk around with it. It is for home defense. Criminals kill people anywhere they desire, thus concealed carry is legal for those that pass all the required checks. It is not complicated. Criminals kill people, but some people don’t want to be killed.

      Since the dawn of time gobs of governments have killed their own innocent citizens. It happened 2 days ago, 1 day ago, today, tomorrow, 2 days from now… I highly recommend you study history and such. Enlightenment is good. The vast, vast, vast majority of Americans don’t want a revolution. The 2nd amendment does help deter our government from reaching too far. The bill of rights is meant to protect us FROM the gooberment. Savvy? Also, u r welcome.

      @freedomlover… It’s not a need. It’s a right. It’s isn’t up for debate. Whether the soldier at the console pushes the button to launch that missile from the drone, helicopter or satellite is dependent on if he understands that we stand for the rights that have saved the planet from tyranny for 200 years. Will he launch on those of us standing up for his rights as well as those of his fellow Americans. It isn’t about defeating them with bullets and bloodshed anymore. It’s about preserving the idea that Americans have inalienable right fought and died for by our father, grandfathers and so on. I like to shoot. I am very good. That doesn’t mean that I want an American in my sights. It means that I had the freedom to do something that I love with the weapons and tools that I enjoy. I sought the freedom to pursue happiness. I am very tired of hearing what we “don’t need.” In America, if you want it and it “Neither breaks your leg nor picks your pocket,” then I have the right to pursue it.

      Armed citizens in this country amount to about 200 million people. If you believe the government’s combined military, police and national guard can contain such an overwhelming force in an area 1500 miles deep and 3000 miles wide I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn I can sell you at a bargain price…..especially since the police and military will be breaking along partisan lines just as the citizenry will be doing.

      As a proud Pennsylvanian and hunter, I would like to remind the Blaze readers that PA boasts the most licensed hunters in the US. Although numbers are down to around 650,000, (due to lack of game) the PA hunting ranks numbered over 1 million ten years ago. This fact spans the political framework of the Commonwealth. As an Independent, I enjoy the company of Democrats, Republicans and Union members in the field, sharing in a rich tradition that many Pennsylvanians have experienced since their youth. During our youth, all Pennsylvania hunters shared the rite of passage of passing the PA Game Commission’s “Hunter Safety Course” followed by the second rite of passage,… the purchase of your first gun, something I did at age 12. That gun and ammo hung on the wall in my shared bedroom on a gun rack which I made in wood shop the same year. I still have the same gun and gun rack, but am blessed with many stories to share regarding the firearm. In PA, hunting is a venerated sport, a shared history with a population that understands the laws surrounding the sport and the responsibility that is required to be part of the “game”. The PA Game Commission has a slogan which is used everywhere we see their logo. “: S.P.O.R.T. Sportsman Policing Our Ranks Together.”

      The boycott actually began with a small gun shop in central PA, TROP Gun Shop, which has participated in the Outdoor show for the past 58 years. Kudos to the owners who have a long history helping sportsman, supporting gun rights and hunting groups for many years. Their gun shop has recently trended to tactical weapons and was forced to boycott because there would be nothing for them to sell or provide instructional information. The tide then changed and many more shops followed. The big guys like Bass Pro and Cabella’s followed suit. This is a great example of Americans standing up for their unalienable rights. Vendors and participants joined together to boycott the show after the awful decision made by the organizers. Criticize and poke fun of us as you like, but in PA we stand in the fire of truth. Truth be told, the Reed group is a liberal backed organization (Progressive Insurance website) that is living off the laurels of citizens who are not criminals and abide current gun laws. They are wolves in disguise, traitors.
      We in PA cherish our right to “Cling to our Bibles and our guns” as we were so eloquently defined by the current POTUS. We understand the right to bear arms and the responsibility that goes with that right. We are forever going to cherish our rich heritage of hunting and firearm ownership. The people do have a voice and exercised our rights. We stood together! Let’s keep standing up together for our sport and our Second Amendment!

      You don’t just “walk around” with an AR-15 (NOT 55). Why do you think they can’t be used for hunting? Have you ever shot one? I have, several times. The bullets only come out as fast as you can pull the trigger, just like other guns. It’s not a machine-gun type weapon like so many people think.

But, for what it is worth, atleast for me, someone who wants to be left alone, this means there are lines in the sand that I can not and will not allow to be crossed.       Let me give you some numbers so you can think twice about wanting to limit what people choose to hunt with.
      From February 2013 Missouri Conservationist page 6 titled “Firearms Deer Harvest Report”
      “Missouri has more than 511,000 deer hunters, who spend about $690 million in the state each year on related activities. This has an overall economic impact of &1.1 billion in Missouri each year and supports almost 12,000 jobs.”

      And you want to limit what people choose to hunt with. Hunting is conservation. Attack hunting and you are attacking real conservation.

      Our 2nd Amendment rights and other rights have been certainly disappearing fast. I certainly pity the younger generation and what they have to look forward to. The last 20 years or so has been an eye-opener.

      I was looking around today to see how I could participate in any small way. I did find this site, http://www.save1791.com that seems to have the right idea.

      I used to go to the UK a lot on business. Even out in the middle of no where are cameras that record your every move. Lets all hope that the direction we are taking can be reversed.

      @Freedomlover_US Yes actually a government that has those tactical abilities is very scared of a public that can revolt in the millions with powerful rifles. There is so much cost involved with the tactical systems that it is not practical to fight a large war that way. If a Tyrannical government were to take over the US a partisan revolt would be the only hope to prevent the mass executions typically involved in those type of regimes. The fear is that such a government would release a non lethal viral weapon that would effectively disable any defense of freedom from the totalitarian government.
      Yes in the end it would take more than a rifle to repel invaders from the United States.

      @whywonder. fyi. China city refers to the empty cities that have been built in China. There are whole towns constructed for speculation with no one living in them. I lived in Shanghai on the outskirts and watched them build an entire town for 80000 people in a year. It stayed empty for 4 years and may still be empty as we moved houses.

      While I agree with your statement, ultimately, this is the result of a government that has long exceeded it’s authorized limits. When the congress and president can pass laws, regulations or pronouncements that benefit individuals, groups, companies or anything that provides them with support and funds, it encourages companies to act in this manner or be crushed by those that do. What we are really seeing is Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged happening in the real world. Companies MUST play the game and use lobbyist and political connections. Failing to do so means their competitors will regulate, tax and ban them out of existence, with a little help from congress or the whitehouse.

      Right up until today, having a virtual show was the best idea going for the vendors boycotting. The show is a very large show and there could not possibly be a venue large enough to house all the vendors that boycotted. The current building complex is booked at least until June of this year so the virtual show was a very good idea. Many of the local vendors that boycotted are offering discounts to people who shop at their stores if they have a receipt tickets purchased. I would urge everyone around the country to find the list of vendors that boycotted and let them know you stand with them. Many of the vendors are nationwide companies, and many of them also sell online. We know we must all stand together or we will surely all hang seperatly.

      The Harrisburg Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show is the largest in the US, not your run-of-the-mill local gun show. I commend Tom McConnell’s taking the initiative to offer an alternative for those dissatisfied with the management’s ill thought out rules. The logistics involved in sponsoring a gun show of national status are almost overwhelming.       Gyro, I think you miss understood. I live in PA and have gone to this shw for over 20 years and I helped call vendors about what the show did and letting them know about the boycott. This website was created by a great group of people who wanted to give the vendors who had decided to boycott the show in support of the Second Amendment a place to sell their goods to recoup money they were giving up. You have to understand when this movement was started to boycott the show, many of the vendors had already paid thousands of dollars (some close to $20,000) for their booths; money at the time Reed was refusing to refund but vendors still chose to boycott many of whom didn’t even sell guns. Many are small businesses that this one show is a huge source of income. This was a huge accomplishment and I ask that you check out the site an support those business; they had the courage to take a stand even when it was going to cost them a lot of money. I am not a vendor and only got involved because I am tired of our righs being stepped on, we all really can make a difference so get involved. Also Reed said in their Statement that it “was a small number affected” well right before they announced postponing there was 350 who dropped out and was rapidly growing.

    Maybe the NRA should host their own exhibition. To heck with Reed Exhibitions. I am glad all those vendors boycotted the show. Good for them.

      the 142nd National Rifle Association annual meetings & exhibits will be held in Houston May 2-5 2013 at the George R.Brown Convention Center. Every gun and ammunition maker will be there.

    American gun owners didn’t like a company, especially british, telling us what guns we can and can’t sell there when they were perfectly legal. Any business that would have broke the boycott would have lost money in the long run for being seen as ‘pro-ban’.

      10 days, 1200 to 1400 vendors and outfitters, from as far as Africa, Alaska and South America.
      Used to draw 1 million attendees. = number of licensed hunters in PA!

      The fly, and particularly swarms of them, are associated with the devil and/or demonic possession. Look it up. The fly will prosper in areas of evil and demon associates. I am flabbergasted at the amount of flies that land on Obama. This is no coincidence people. They have the best pest control equipment that money can buy, yet the devil creatures get though to the pres. Bing devil, demons and flies. Know what you are up against.
