On Monday, TheBlaze brought you the story of an unnamed veteran who stood up and gave a rousing defense of the First and Second Amendments during a Chicago-area forum on gun control.
“The problem with this country right now is, ‘it’s us and it’s f***ing them,’” he declared soon after watching a slideshow equating gun owners with Nazis. “We need to stop this crap.”
And while he was extremely respectful in asking how the professor on the panel would react if his First Amendment rights were in the crosshairs, when the professor reiterated that the Second Amendment should be re-examined for relevancy, the vet retorted: “The threat of tyranny is no less than at the turn of the century in 1900, in 1800, or in 1700.”
Watch the entire video, first posted by Legal Insurrection, below:
The vet sat down to a standing ovation– but afterwords, the question remained: Who was he? What made him speak out, and what does he think of the state of the country? With help from the Winnetka-Glencoe Patch, TheBlaze was able to track him down and ask in an exclusive interview.
The veteran’s name is Kevin Tully, and he left the Air Force a staff sergeant after serving in Desert Storm, 3 tours for Operation Southern Watch, and a tour in Panama.
Tully emphasized throughout the interview that America has become too divided: a nation of Republicans vs. Democrats, pro-life vs. pro choice, us vs. them. On a more basic level, many don’t even identify as American– they’re Italian-American, African-American, Asian-American, etc.
“I’m not a liberal, I’m not a conservative, I’m not a Republican, I’m not a Democrat. I’m an American — I believe in the Constitution, I believe in our country,” he said.
But that doesn’t mean he’s pleased with the actions of those on the left or right.
“I’d had enough,” he said simply, describing why he stood up at the conference.
Though the majority of Second Amendment supporters there were “well-mannered,” a small group of “ignorant” individuals had grown unruly and actually booed the professor off the floor. While the “hubris” of the various speakers was difficult to stomach (they were apparently talking to the pro-gun group like they were “five-year-olds”), Tully wanted to hear the professor out.
But after Professor Goodman simply repeated that the Second Amendment may no longer be “relevant,” Tully reacted:
“Having no concept that– tyranny doesn’t exist, or the threat of tyranny doesn’t exist, or the word doesn’t even exist– you’re living in a utopian society…He had no grasp of the concept of why the Second Amendment is in the Constitution at all. It’s not to go hunting, it’s not to own a firearm, it’s to give the people the power to keep tyranny at bay.
[Tyranny is] not a wolf that dies. It’s a wolf that breeds, and it may not always be in your backyard, but it’s always looming on the horizon. It’s always looming on the horizon, and that’s why the Founding Fathers wrote it the way they did. And the guy had no grasp that without the Second Amendment, they would soon come after his First Amendment rights.”
When asked where he sees the latest push for gun control going, Tully freely admits that he’s not a “history professor,” but he’s taken it upon himself to study history.
“Throughout history, any king or emperor that wanted to oppress the people– with whatever their views were, their new laws or taxes– the very first thing they did was they went around and rounded up everybody’s weapons,” he cautioned. “It didn’t matter if it was clubs or all the way up to firearms…That’s where it goes.”
That doesn’t mean that tyranny is knocking on the front door, but that it’s a dangerous game to assume it will never re-emerge as a threat.
When asked why he thinks many Americans no longer feel the need to arm themselves against any threat foreign or domestic, Tully speculated that it might be because we haven’t faced an existential threat since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
“I remember feeling like, wow, we don’t have any enemies now,” he recalled. And if you or a loved one hasn’t served in combat, your perception of today’s threats is likely to be completely sheltered.
Not only that, he added, but think about how much your life revolves around food and television. “Our school systems don’t teach history anymore,” he noted, and then many people go on to spend spend years if not decades absorbed far more in television and entertainment than reality.
“Bread and circuses,” he said, repeating the line of the ancient Roman poet Juvenal in describing how the Roman Empire slowly collapsed.
But Tully continued, that obviously needn’t be the case. What surprised him most about the viral video from the gun panel– which has been watched roughly 60,000 times since being uploaded on Jan. 22– was how many people lauded him for standing up and speaking out.
“I think for myself– I look different things up and formulate an opinion after I’ve gathered some facts, and everybody in this country has the ability to do that,” he said. “And those that aren’t doing it now– they’re just taking sides of being a liberal or a conservative– they need to stop that. We’re Americans.”
He concluded with a declaration as moving as that in Chicago:
“You’re an American, there’s no reason to hold your voice. We need to stand up, be proud to be Americans, be proud of our heritage, be proud of our flag, proud of our Constitution, and proud of the accomplishments of our country and [individuals]. Speak up, because nobody else is going to. If we’re a nation with a single voice, the world hears us.”

Glenn Beck has sold out the very people he taught to question everything. We were told to Question God, but I guess Not Obama.
He will not even report on Obama stories, he is talking about gibberish on his radio show. We have lost the person we trusted for breaking news. He has yet to mention troops building in Africa, Muslims taking over in England…and on and on and on….. he is puppet…..and the smart viewers the ones he called idiots last night are moving on. I am spending the rest of the week to show people he has changed, and then I will visit his sites, listen to his radio…no more. I canceled his show last night.

If you are referring to Chris Manfredonia, he was NOT the man in the woods, he was arrested on the side of the school briefly, for trying to “break in” when he heard gun fire and was trying to get to his daughter. Maybe YOU should do a little more research before you try and belittle others.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 3:33pmSheepdogconfrontthe wolf, I admire your view, but you are mistaken, illegal gun confiscation has occurred in this country many times and no doubt will again. The latest occurence that comes to my mind is what happened in New Orleans after Katrina. The National Guard forcefully entered homes that were not even affected by the storm and used force at gunpoint to confiscate arms from the inhabitants. Surely you were aware of that, if not, check it out on Google. In one case an elderly woman who legally possesed a pistol was forcibly abd brutally assaulted when her pistol was confiscated. Most people who had their legal arms confiscated have never gotten them back, no receipts were ussued because the Guard was “too busy”. Think about it, because it certainly could happen again despite your personal feelings.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 4:16pm@ ZORRO, But you see, the VAST majority of AMERICA is not enlightening themselves because people like you say: “Man, I’m not here to waste my time on you. Stop being an idiot!” The VAST majority of AMERICA is being “enlightened” by the talking heads who are doing what basically amounts to your job (and my job) on a MASSIVE SCALE. And AMERICA is gobbling it up. No one thinks for themselves anymore, they just listen to talking heads like Beck, O’reilly, Hannity, Limbaugh, etc. And on the liberal side you have the same thing.
People such as yourself have a task, a patriotic duty, to talk hard to people and show them how they are wrong, or provide a quick link and THEN smack them in the face with unkind words. But just knocking them down and calling them stupid solves nothing, and makes you out to be the idiot that you are. Tell me, me something, we read about “where is the chair from the RNC convention today?” or “Glenn’s wife lost their wedding ring in the toilet!” when those articles should read something like: “Who was the man running from police in the woods and where is he today?” – yet, we NEVER see reporting like that on the Blaze. All we see is “feel good filler” and regurgitated from the mainstream articles.
I too have found myself slipping away from Glenn and the Crony Company’s daily crap. I have downgraded my account and if I don’t see him doing anything but mumbling sweet nothing into the mic, then I will just move on as many have.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 9:25pmMr. Tully has gotten to THE foundational problem present in our country today. The fundamental issue of “us vs. them” or “with us or against us”. Ideological rigidity, based in part on a hyper-focus on individualism, is tearing down this nation. First of all, we are ALL a part of American society. None of us are an island unto ourselves. Adam Smith understood this concept 300 years ago. Why can’t we? Secondly, one only has to look at these message boards to see the evidence of this. Otherwise likeminded individuals, anonymously arguing over the minute details of inconsequential topics. Many on these message boards will claim that the current administration is waging “class warfare” with the “rich vs. poor” narrative yet completely miss the fact that Beck (and other talking heads) are using the exact same type of rhetoric to attack unions. Specifically, these pundits promote the idea that union members get pay and benefits not given to non-union workers. This is done to create a sense of envy and unfairness. Instead of thinking critically about the situation, listeners adopt the rhetoric of the speaker and perpetuate the meme.
By the way, (I know it’s off topic) “right to work” is the quintessential example of freeloading. I would think that conservative-minded people would be against this, but it is cheered loudly in these circles. Non-union members receive the same pay, benefits, and protections provided by the unions without paying a dime for th

Jan. 24, 2013 at 11:53pmI disagree with one of his points.
The military man himself proclaimed that there is a threat to Americans, it is called tyranny. Tyranny exists when a group, a philosophy, a party, an organization, a movement etc.. pushes to take away what (guns) defends us from it.
So to NOT call at thief in the night, a thief in the night is to ignore the disease. Treating a symptom instead of the disease just kills us slower. The greatest threat to the United States Constitution is not “Americans” it is people that believe the constitution is not pertinent today, ie liberals.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 9:40amThis started when the military complex banned soldiers from using the non issued PMAGS in theater. The military has no way of keeping these mags from soldiers at demob, and they are in fact more reliable that the issue mags. SOCOM uses them, but the average infantryman cannot. This is when the signs were there they were waiting to do something about our rights as normal americans. Do not let them. It is not about protecting children, it is about controlling our society. People have given up their security to live in the city. They think we are all nuts to live in the small rural west, but we have more security than them. We do not have the rampant crime, because of less targets. Many have not grown up around firearms, they are city dwellers, and they want to legislate from this viewpoint. Would you like to face a charging cougar while up in the mountains cutting wood for the winter with only seven rounds. How about a hungry grizzly bear while doing the same. Things are different in the city than in the woods, but yet they are the ones who vote in a mess like we have. When they come to our part of the world to vacation, they want us to keep them from being mauled by wild animals with our firearms. Things are different, but they will not get it! Criminals will be the only ones with arms, they do not care about the law!!!!

Local commands do encourage it, but at the top (i.e. the guys who never go out on mission), they removed it from the authorized list of equipment. I am just saying this was a sign of this fight currently going on. I have never seen Jones except on the last Piers Morgan thing, but I am just saying it was a sign. I don’t believe many government conspiracy theories because I have yet to see a private or public bureaucratic entity operate with enough competence to pull something like that off. It also plays nicely into the 9-11 truth individuals theories that 9-11 was an inside job so to give reason for the invasion of Afghanistan.

You know the Bible, brother: “Can two walk together unless they are agreed?” (Amos 3:3) For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? (2 Cor. 6:14)
Americans who voted for Barack chose to follow a worker of iniquity. The consequences of that choice are plain. They have become like him.
Tully’s exhortation is irrelevant because it does not apply to our current spiritual or socio-political context. In fact, it is dangerous because like many dismayed patriots, he refuses to acknowledge that the chasm is unbreachable.
We either face reality or we are doomed. Sadly, we may already have lost the battle as a country, since we chose rhetoric rather than actions and we did not cut off the snake’s head.

1) COMPROMISE – I know this is a dirty word to some, but it is imperative especially now when our Country is evenly divided, politically speaking.
2) STOP DEMONIZING THOSE WHO HAVE DIFFERENT IDEAS ABOUT WHAT IS BEST FOR THIS COUNTRY – We all do it and no party/political persuasion has all the answers, and we will not ever come together as a nation until it stops.
3) RESPECT EACH OTHER – Everyone in this great nation brings value to to the life we live here. Respect the differences in all of us. That doesn’t mean you have to accept those differences in your own lives, but you do need to respect those differences in the lives of your fellow citizens.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 9:18am“Though the majority of Second Amendment supporters there were “well-mannered,” a small group of “ignorant” individuals had grown unruly and actually booed the professor off the floor. ”
Oh, my goodness! You mean they ACTUALLY booed the brilliant professor? Oh, how horrible.
Now…..esteemed “journalist”……pray tell why you deem it “ignorant” to boo the out-of-touch whacko who identifies as a “professor?”
Such action is the only thing these leftist geeks really respect. It’s the only thing that gets their attention. He loves it when they’re quiet. To him that means his perverted ideas are unopposed.
I would have liked to see them stand up and get right in his face. Sitting there and listening to him tell them how ignorant they are is the tactic of fools. Especially coming from someone who is totally without any kind of real intelligence or wisdom.
It’s insulting to this group’s intelligence to make the claims he does. The ones voicing their disapproval should have been joined by the others, and all of them together should have made it painfully plain to the “professor” he would be better qualified working at the car wash. He’s neither qualified nor intelligent enough…..nor wise enough…. to offer an opinion on the matter.
Remember when the people shouted their disapproval at the town hall meetings before the conservatives inundated Congress? Well, the leftist geeks are still smarting over that.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 10:00amRead the story again Independent. It wasn’t the “esteemed journalast” that called the rude people ignorant; it was Sgt. Tulley. Just because the left acts like spoiled children; shouting, throwing tantrums, interrupting someone with a different point of view….does not mean that we should act the same way. Truth and logic win out over lies and propoganda every time. Sgt. Tulley clearly schooled the “professor”. Sgt Tulley won the debate. Truth prevailed.

You mean in the movies? Not anymore. Hollyweird has decided to push LGBT rights down our collective throat.
Seriously, do yourself a favor and slap yourself until you’re wide awake. Truth prevails only where the guns and blood of the just prevail. Not many places anymore. Reagan warned that the last bastion of freedom had to be (actively) protected. We have failed to do so, because we thought America was like a good ol’ movie.

CAN YOU? WHY are you STILL hesitating?
ARE there any “Virtuous Men” left in the Republic?

He’s also debunked the ridiculous idea that planes didn’t ACTUALLY fly into the towers in NYC. He does us rational and intelligent humans a service when he does so. Why? Because we DID land on the moon, terrorists DID knock down the towers with planes and yes, children WERE murdered by a crazy in CT. None of which means that guns, spaceships or air planes should be banned. Stick to the FACTS and you will advance your cause much further.

Why should he “pipe down”? Because you say so? So you can speak but he cannot? You have no more right to voice your opinion than he does. If the govt and the MSM did not flat out lie and cover up there would not be any conspiracy theories. You reap what you sow. When the govt make everything top secret and treat the people like bugs, they deserve the suspicion they get. How long does it take to do an investigation and tell the folks what happened? I also venture to say that you would not say that to his face.

We can work together (as long as you agree with everything I say). We welcome conservatives to the table (as long as they cross the aisle & vote with our platform). Unfortunately moving to the middle to try to negotiate with someone who will not budge is an exercise in frustration or haven’t you noticed what has gone on in congress the last few years? Yes we must stand and use our voice to dissent when needed, but I’m not holding out much hope for the divisive rhetoric of some others to stop. Tyranny is re-emerging & if we are coddling the wolf we may get eaten.

Jan. 24, 2013 at 8:34amI do have the utmost respect for this man. He did step forward and try to debate this professor while others were getting unruly. But, to come to their defense at least a little, they did not act like a union gathering, and nothing was damaged, torn down, and nobody was injured. That being said, the professor had his agenda and while he let this vet speak, he appeared to do so only to appease the crowd. Once the vet spoke the professor proceeded with his “lesson to the children” ignoring anything that the vet said. It was certainly no debate, but a well put together lesson plan designed to teach the ignorant masses. Again, had the professor run afoul at a left wing union gathering in the same manner he would not just have been shouted down, he would have had his ass thoroughly kicked.

Korea) ORIENTED DEMOCRATS are incapable of thinking. There are a few RINOS thrown in with that group also. This is not to say that all Democrats abide by the mantra, there are a few who think for themselves and can see the looming despotism which could rear its ugly head. If your Democratic Representative or Senator is one of the select few, call, e-mail or write him/her and thank them for their courage.

The way they take us by force is to disarm us first and then take us by force. The 2nd Amendment protects us from this exactly.

The Second Amendment protects us from nothing! It just words on a piece of paper. To make it mean something, there has to be sufficient people with the balls to do the protecting. We are to uphold and defend the Constitution, not the other way around.
