Woman Arrested While Refusing Smart Meter Installation on Her Property Tells Us Her Story

(Image: CBS screenshot)
Jennifer Stahl has been a strong advocate against the smart meter program in Naperville, Ill., for the last two years. The issue came to a head Wednesday afternoon when she was arrested while refusing to let the utility workers install the controversial device.
“I was protecting my property,” Stahl said in an interview with TheBlaze Thursday afternoon. “I felt my emotion was like a momma bear protecting her babies.”
Stahl was at a friend’s house when she received the call from her husband that the utility workers had arrived. She was home within 15 minutes and saw they were at a neighbor’s house. Her neighbors were not home, but they had signs stating they did not permit the new meter to be installed.
Stahl said she waited on her porch for the workers to arrive at her house. When they did, she refused them access to her backyard through her locked gate. The police — including the police supervisor, a sergeant — were called. Stahl said the sergeant explained the workers had authorization to access the meter, but Stahl stood her ground saying she didn’t approve it. The sergeant continued to try and convince Stahl to comply and said if she didn’t, he’d arrest her.
“The city has always had and maintains the right to access our equipment, and today we were simply exercising that right,” City Manager Doug Kreiger told the Chicago Tribune, which reported Wednesday’s events.
The lock on Stahl’s fence was cut, and when Stahl wouldn’t step away from the meter, she was lead away by an officer, cuffed and waited for a marked squad car to arrive to take her to the department. When asked why she was being arrested, she was told it was for interfering with a police officer.
The local CBS channel has footage of the arrest:
Did she ever think it would come to this?
“It occurred to me,” Stahl said, explaining that she previously had considered how far she would go to maintain her stance.
“I didn’t put my name on a federal lawsuit” to stand down now, Stahl continued.
The group Naperville Smart Meter Awareness has filed a lawsuit, for which there are currently motions to dismiss as well as to grant temporary restraining orders for residents refusing the meters.

(Photo: Naperville Smart Meter Awareness/Facebook)
Tom Glass, a member of the Naperville Smart Meter Awareness group, told TheBlaze Thursday he felt the fact that the city is arresting residents for refusing is “completely frightening in this day in age.”
“The city is still sending around people to read these [smart] meters … they don’t work,” Glass continued.
Stahl was one of two women arrested while smart meters were being installed on their property without permission Wednesday. Malia “Kim” Bendis was the second who received two misdemeanors for attempted eavesdropping and resisting a police officer, according to the Tribune.
This video posted to YouTube shows Bendis protesting the removal of her analog meter for installation of a smart meter:
Stahl estimated at the rate the city is going installing smart meters that they’ll be complete with 100 percent compliance by the end of the week. The Tribune reported 57,000 homes (99 percent) have them so far.
“It’s not acceptable that the city can choose for me on my behalf to install this meter that I don’t think is appropriate for myself,” Stahl said. “I choose to keep my analog meter because of all the issues. I can’t believe the city is not providing an alternative option.”
An alternative option of sorts is provided by the city. However, it still requires residents to receive a new meter. According to a Q&A document about the Naperville Smart Grid Initiative, homeowners are able to choose between participating in the smart grid program with a standard, wireless meter. Or they can opt out and will still receive what is being called a “non-standard” smart meter, which has the wireless card removed.
To receive a “non-standard” smart meter costs an initial, one-time fee of $68.35 (this is the cost difference between the two meters) and a monthly fee of $24.75 for manual reading of the meter. The Q&A emphasized that no existing analog meters will be retained by customers and that the new non-wireless, non-standard smart meters installed for residents opting out of the program requires new equipment and special training for workers to learn how to read them.
“Therefore, there is an incremental cost for this service,” the Q&A explains.
The controversy over smart meters has been seen in cities around the nation. Some have concerns about the type of data the smart meters will allow to be collected (and how that data will be used). Others worry about the health risks associated with transmitter in the smart meter, including headaches, insomnia, tinnitus and DNA breakdown.
Here’s video of a third Naperville mother emotionally refusing the smart meter Wednesday fearing her daughter’s health:
As for Stahl, she said when she arrived home later, the smart meter was installed.
“I choose to rise above. I’m not going to worry about what I’m going to do [about the meter] at this point. I’m going to focus on my energy into mobilizing the people of Naperville and around the country … to do something to take a stand as well,” Stahl said.
Editor’s note: This story has been updated to include information about the option for customers wishing to opt out of the smart meter program.

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 5:31pmFirst you should know that these “Smart” Meters give them the power to turn off whatever they want, when they want. They also have been known to make people sick, or act differently. Secondly a smart lawyer will get her off, as long as the neighbors back her. Third, you will notice how the installation men showed up when no one was home. Time to get a really angry junk yard dog, and put up a notice not to enter. Fourth, i have heard that even after installation, you can pay to have a someone else install the original, or similar back on. Not sure if that is legal or not. But just what i’ve heard. JENNIFER STAHL IS MY KIND OF AMERICAN! IF YOU DON’T STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS, YOU DON’T DESERVE THEM!

Of course we fought it, and it was “fixed” without explanation. Convinced they were messing with us. Unite good people. The Smart Meter is just a tiny part of what Progressives/socialists/communists have in store to control every aspect of our lives. Most people have no idea what the Smart Meter is capable of. Total control of your energy usage, individual denial of power. It is in no way benign. Never, ever relinquish control of your lives to others, it will not turn out well.

Instead let them put the meter on your property. Say nothing. Then go buy 200,000 volt stun gun.
When the stun gun is placed at the meter’s metallic base and triggered it takes about 2 seconds to turn an expensive smart meter into a pile of non-functional junk. After the meter mysteriously shorts out every month, they will go back to the old meter. If they do an investigation…consider your activities good training in subterfuge.

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 8:47pmI am a meter-tech for an electrical co-op and i suspect these particular meters are called AMR’s. Automatic Meter Reader. They are not the so-called ” smart meters ” that eco-geeks want us all to have. I am in Ohio and should not speak for Illinois but smart meters require smart houses also, no matter what state your in. No one can turn off your A\C, your appliances or anything else in your home without your home, with all its myriad of breakers and switches, being compatible to your meter. The option is there to cut your whole power but that option is quite expensive and extremely impractical. ( per unit costs ) If it is an AMR, these meters have an approximate failure rate of 5% per month causing folk like myself to go out and read them the old-fashioned way. When people ask, I merely tell them that technology isn’t all its cracked up to be.

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 10:09pm@DeskJockey: History shows that civil disobedience does work if there is some spine behind it. In fact it works almost too well. The danger isn’t that it won’t work, but that the movement escalates into open warfare and total rebellion. If the media and the majority of the people are NOT behind your actions, in fact actively oppose what you’re doing, then being a martyr is not only useless, it’s self destructive.

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 10:13pmI installed these meters and I’m also an electrician. Deuk nailed it. Everyone needs to calm down and realize this is just technology saving time and money. These meters do not give the utility the ability to control ANYTHING inside your house. They also don’t give the utility any more information than they previously had. Remember that the whole purpose of a meter is to measure the amount of electricity you have used so they already know your usage. This is the only thing both meters do. The only difference is one has the ability to be read remotely and one doesn’t. Also remember that this is the utilities meter and you are using the utilities power. You are choosing to use their service and when you do you are subject to their terms. These meters are, as deuk stated, AMR meters that can be remotely read by a truck that can simply drive down the road once a month instead of a meter reader getting out at every house and reading them manually. Driving down a road at 35 mph logging meter readings straight into a laptop reduces many expenses for the utility which will not need to be passed down to us, the consumer. Man hours and a smaller fleet of vehicles are the biggest. Listen I’m as conservative as one can get but you are utilizing a service from a provider. If the provider wishes to change the meter in which they calculate your usage your only option is to go along with it or switch to an alternative means of power. I see no reason as of now to be concern

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 10:45pmYour missing the point Naggs. It doesn’t matter if it’s a simple time/money saving tool, or the ultimate expression of power. It was HER! property. For whatever reason, bad, good, or indifferent she decided she didn’t want a smart meter. It was her decision as a property owner.
The proper and right response by the Utility company would have been to tell her that if she didn’t get the “smart” meter, then their company wouldn’t supply her power, no exceptions. It’s their company and they have rights as well. Then the ball is back in her court, and she can make a decision.
The WRONG! AND CONSTITUTIONALLY ILLEGAL THING TO DO! would be to invade her property over her lawful protests, destroy her backyard lock, and when she wouldn’t get out of their way, ON HER PROPERTY!! have the police ARREST her. I know this is minor to some of you, but to me…these are the incidents that flare up into violent rebellion. Utter disregard for her rights as a citizen and property owner, by a police force that has NO RESPECT for the citizenry. So Valiant, what are you suggesting a person do when the City comes to install one of these smart meters at their house? Can you be a little more clear about that? In your totally macho view, as a real man with big cojones, what are you going to do when the City tries to put one these on YOUR house? Whatcha going to do? Take a stand for Freedom? And, in the meantime, what do you recommend others do?
Your city already monitors your electrical usage (duh, that how they bill you) and the city can already cut off your electricity, although I’d like to hear a single example of that happening. Unless you didn’t pay your bill. Hate to tell you this, but your cell phone use is monitored real time, as well as your internet use. While your at it take a stand against those things too just to be consistent.
Somebody said these smart meters cause people to “act differently” or “make them sick.” I can see from the posts here that even reading about these meters can make people “act differently.”

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 11:36pmI have one of these meters and I actually enjoy reading the reports on line to see where my power is used. I specifically signed a contract with the Power Company stating that they do NOT have the authority to reduce my power at any time only turn it off for lack of payment to them.
You do have an option to get rid of the smart meter: tell the power company to come pick up their meter and turn off their power. You can generate your own power in many ways. Neighborhoods can create their own power companies, with their own generator facilities. You can purchase a natural gas powered generator to power your home, or if in more rural areas, run more powerful generators.

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 11:38pmRanger, I agree with you that I do not like someone getting arrested on their own property. The problem is, when you agree to electrical service you also agree to give the utility the legal right to access your property to maintain or upgrade their equipment. Technology has come out to make their system more efficient so they went to upgrade their system which they have a legal right to do. Remember that every month they come around to read the meter. They utilized their right to have access to this meter every month.
Instead of being arrested she should have allowed them to install the new meter without getting herself arrested. Then she could have called the utility and asked that they remove the meter immediately even if it results in the loss of her power. They would have come back out, removed the meter and left her powerless without the meter.
I just think we are acting like liberals on this issue. We are demanding that a company supply us with something. That’s not the way it works, you do not get to decide what kind of meter the utility uses to measure your electrical usage. If you don’t want to grant access to the utility that’s fine. Don’t order their service.
In the end she signed the agreement and then she didn’t want to abide by it.
We all knew this technology was coming. Just think how much money is spent sending a meter reader to every house in the country every single month. I wouldn’t want to see the bill that comes with doing t

Negative. The power companies response to “I don’t want your smart meter”… isn’t to cut locks and have people arrested on their own property.”
The response is this: “Mam, if you don’t want the smart meter we can’t supply you with power. If she still says no, then turn her meter off and call in to have power cut. End of Story. The company’s rights to monitor power in a cost saving way is preserved.
The right’s of the property owner is preserved. Everyone’s happy.
And the little story above isn’t just what should have happened. It’s what the CONSTITUTION says should happen. If it were me, the police and the power company would have paid for this and paid the price for years to come. And if someone were to put a sign or meter in my yard AGAINST my wishes, I would warn them not too once. If they persisted and called the police, I wouldn’t say another word. I would be the soul of cooperation, and I wouldn’t go to jail.
But over the next few months both the power company and the police would rue that day. They wouldn’t know why bad things kept happening to them. They wouldn’t know why their budgets were busted, but pay they would. And yes, I would get away with it.

“The city has always had and maintains the right to access our equipment” so the city owns those meters? I thought the electric company owned the meters. That’s new to me that the city owns the electric company. I thought the electric company was either a private/public company or coop.
What’s more about this whole meter scam is if you wanted to put your own generator on your house to make your own electricity, the city would tell you “oh no, you HAVE to buy your electricity from company X.” The US used to be all about individualism, but now it’s about corporatism. Big corporatism. The government will actually make laws that forces you to be a consumer and forces you to buy your utilities from some corporation. It’s called corruption. Places like New Zealand and Australia actually encourage their citizens to be self sufficient with rainwater collectors, solar power collectors, wind generators. Not in the US. You have that stuff that takes you “off the grid” and you get labeled a terrorist. They will force you to be dependent on some big corporation. Corruption, plain and simple.

Theses meters that were going to be installed were not just the type that can be read from the road to make it easy and cheaper. These were smart meters that send your info frequently ( several times an hour?) and is bounced over the whole neighborhood’s houses till it reaches the company. Very invasive as to your real time usage. We opted out and have to pay an additional $ 12/mo to keep the old meter. I live in the communist state of Maine, so don’t think all people who oppose this are right wingers. This is something many on the left here opposed too. 2 types of meters – we are talking the NON smart meter here – at least the story appears to be.
The smart meter is a whole other animal, and as mentioned, you have to buy appliances to MATCH to use it. Just wait – they will be the only thing available in stores in a few more years – like low flush toilets.
But TILL then,
PHYSICAL damage to the meters – smashed or tiny drilled holes – will result in the cost of a new one being added to your next bill – if they even continue to ALLOW you power at all.
not the best choice.
And pouring water on/near 240 volts is something you may want to think TWICE about…
And ANY damage that results in the meter not working properly may result in immediate power loss at the same time. I suggest April and May when you are least likely to need Heat/A/C.
It may be a WHILE before you have it back – or your TV/microwave/etc.
Uncurable Wound has it right.
Large magnets – Neodymium are the strongest – would be best if this is really an issue to you.
Also old school tape degaussers – now a bit hard to find but still available – are also VERY good at erasing magnetic disks and jacking up electrical signals – yet safe to use.
But again, be prepared for NO POWER if you are successful – and plan ahead.
I’m more concerned about the SMART meter personally.
But until I have no options other than a $3000 Smart Refrigerator, I’m not gonna fret about it.

Posted on January 25, 2013 at 9:31amCorrect, it gives them/someone the power to turn off appliances at their discretion. The way it is being sold to the public would have us believe it is for balancing out the power grid so as to avoid peak usage, brown outs and the like.
However there was another poster from Ohio who is a utility worker and he is correct in saying in order for the Smart Meters to work Smart Houses are required. I shouldn’t say work…in order for their capabilities to be fully utilized they would have to be installed on Smart Houses. However, I don’t think the lack of Smart Houses prevents the Installation of Smart Meters. Not too sure about that part though. It would be interesting to see or find out when companies are going to start making Smart Appliances and “only” providing those to consumers?

Posted on January 25, 2013 at 10:44amI think the main point is being missed.
It doesn’t matter whether the smart meter is a great way for the utility company to do their jobs remotely, and save you money….or if they are the next harbinger of government control. That is for you, a free American to decide. If you own your property it is for you to decide what goes into it, and what stays out. It is for you to decide who is allowed on your property, and who isn’t.
Those of you spouting about right-of-ways by utility companies built into your property agreements are also missing the point.
The woman didn’t want a smart meter on her property.
The proper response by the utility company would have been to tell her that without the smart meter the untility company would not provide her power.
The woman could then decide.
The above is a constitutionally fair situation. What actually occured was unconstitutional. Some of you need to understand that. Constitutional property rights override, and exceed any federal, state, or county mandates. Just because no one has the money to challenge it all the way to the supreme court doesn’t mean that it isn’t true.
Whether she is right or wrong about the smart meter is not important. What happened was evil, and she needs to be avenged. The local police and the utility company need to be taught a lesson. And that’s a fact.

Posted on January 25, 2013 at 10:52am@Sillyfreshness – The point is that we don’t HAVE a choice of what company to get power from. Here in our city in Illinois we have one choice, so not really a choice is it? Our garbage company? – we can’t pick them either. The city bids it out and decides. This last time our city contract was up city hall sent out a letter to all the residents to “ask” which company to use. They included in this a request from our usual garbage service worker a plea to continue with him, because we all like him so much and he’s nice, does a good job and we don’t really want to have to get used to another driver right? That was their official notification…oh did i forget to mention their bid was the highest by quite a bit, but yup, that’s the company the picked. I can’t stand Illinois.

Posted on January 25, 2013 at 10:57amHere are a few ideas. Research this on the internet.
(1) Attacking a smart meter’s memory-through hardware – If a smart meter hasn’t been built with protective features, inserting a needle on each side of the device’s memory chip can do the trick. The needle intercepts the electrical signals in the memory chip. From these signals, a device’s programming can be determined. If security features are in place, it is still possible to obtain the data through customized tools.
2) Using a digital radio – The two-way radio chip in a smart meter allows the device to be read remotely and receive commands over the network. A hacker, who has cracked the meter’s programming, can use security codes from the software in the chip to get on the network and issue commands.
3) Accessing the meter – Another method of hacking the smart meter is through a wireless device. Using a software radio programmed to mimic a variety of communication devices, a hacker can listen in on wireless communications in the network and guess over time how to communicate with the meter. Another method is to steal a meter and reverse-engineer it; although inexpensive, the process would require a good knowledge of integrated circuits.

First you should know is that you have been lied too and have been made a fool of.
Smart meters provide live current information about your power usage. In the past this was done once a month when the guy went to read your meter. With this live up to date info you can log into you local utility company and view how much electricity you are using on a daily basis.
A smart meter can not turn off power to any device in your home. The only way to turn off power is to go and manually turn off the breaker, light switch or unplug an item from the wall. A smart meter can be wired or wireless. No more dangerous then your wireless network, phone or cell phone. Except a smart meter is located on the outside of your home.

Who cares if Smart Meters are good, bad, or indifferent? The only question is; do you personally want one?
If so, then there is no conflict.
If you own your property and don’t want a smart meter, (for whatever reason, fair or foul), then you should be able to tell the utility company to take a hike. The company may turn off your power which is their right, but that’s your choice. It’s your property, your life.
When the utility company or the police walk over you, your property, and your life, then what they are doing is unconstitutional. And they should be punished for this. If the state refuses to give justice, then it is your right and duty as an American to insure that Justice is done.

It is not a question of personal choice. The only choice you have is such a matter is to refuse electrical power to your home. While you’re at it, might as well disconnect the water. Sure she may have to get her power cut off, sure you think anyone that isn’t as enlighted as you about smart meters, and the world in general, is a right winged Cromagnum, conspiracy theorist, but at least she CAN choose. IT”S HER PROPERTY.
But you see that didn’t occur here. The State chose for her. They walked all over her rights as a citizen of this nation, and as a property owner. Regardless of Utility right of ways and other such municipal garbage, what they did is unconstitutional. It was wrong. If the State refuses to address this injustice, then the Utility company and the police will need to be taught this in a painful way.

They are no different from a cordless or cellular phone in yours or your neighbors house. The power company could always read your meter whenever they wanted, that’s how you get your power bill. They can also turn your power off at the street or the pole whenever they want, they don’t need to pull your meter. A smart meter just lets them be cheap and not pay for a meter reader. But I do agree if you don’t want a smart meter on your home you should be able to opt out by paying a small fee to have someone come out to read your meter. Likewise if you do get a smart meter installed you should get a small credit for the money you are saving them by not having to send a meter reader out.

Posted on January 25, 2013 at 1:48pmI have some serious search and seizure issues with the cops arresting this woman. First, this seems to be a civil issue between Stahl and the power company/city. She has a right to be secure in her person and property. She especially exercised this constitutional right both physically (chaining the gate/no trespassing signs) and verbally (refusing them access to her property). A law enforcement officer cannot force a citizen to give up their rights…especially to another private citizen. Now, if the power company/town had a court order specifically naming her in the suit, that may be another story. Even then, it would be a civil court order, one which a law enforcement officer could not enforce with a criminal arrest.
Personally, I believe this officer violated her fourth amendment rights. This as a trumped up charge of resisting a police officer. An officer cannot arrest someone, for refusing not to give up their rights. If I was this guy’s Lt. his lack of knowledge regarding search and seizure would be reflected in his eval.
Not only will she get off, but she probably has a decent law suit for the violation of her rights. IMHO.

They also allow your meter to be read without workers having to come on your property. They allow the power to be turned on and off remotely instead of a worker showing up. This gives much faster service when you are moving and lowers the cost.
If I were you, I would worry more about Obama trying to bankrupt 40% or the current power supply produced by coal and at the same time attempting to move automotive power to the electric grid instead of the gas pump. This only adds up to 1 thing, “skyrocketing energy costs”. Think about it.

Alright, I’ll play…if a municipality makes such a code/rule then it’s unconstitutional. It might not have been challenged but if it were challenged it would eventually be deemed unconstitutional.
Now I realize that most people want electricity in their homes, and burning oil lamps for light is dangerous, but the issue is not about who is smarter, or more enlightened regarding their living habits.
The issue is about freedom of choice, and whether its an electric company, local police, or municipal codes telling me and you that (in this case) you don’t have that freedom of choice; well they’re wrong. It’s just that simple. The Constitution trumps your local mayor. Just because the battle hasn’t been fought in a court of law yet, doesn’t make it right.
As for me, I’m not going to jail or be a martyr for the state. I’ll handle these type of injustices in my own (more effective) way.

The hacker community claims they can hack in and these meters have all sorts of “surveillance” capabilities. Posted on January 25, 2013 at 6:31pmSo let me understand, these “Smart” meters are supposed to track usage and allow people to save money by using energy at off peak times. Something electric companies have been trying to get people to do for years and failing because people want electric when they want electric. They have been deployed worldwide and found to not save any money, in fact they do the opposite, the cost millions to install and there are no energy savings to the customers just extra costs on their bill
Why does this all strike me like every other “Green – read Red” energy project that has been going on for the last decade? This is all about more control and spending our hard earned dollars on someone’s dream of alternative energy. We’ve wasted Billions on solar and wind energy which are not cost effective ways to generate electric and now we are spending money on smart meters will remote kill switches.
These remote kill switches couldn’t be abused by say someone who decides that anyone on a certain list shouldn’t receive power any more. Nope, that’s just crazy talk this is all just so that someone doesn’t need to come to your house to disconnect your electric if you don’t pay your bill or move.
WOW! I have zero problem with remote meter reading so my meter reads are actual each month but these Smart Meters are for the birds. Just the cost alone should be enough to tell you they make NO sense!

A person’s footprint should not matter if they are paying their bills. A person might use more electricity but less gas. It should be no one’s business.
I was following a development of stirling engines being used for solar power. The concept was being developed by ideal labs in California. Their concept was to make an 6′ by 8′ array of stirling engines to power a house. I think form the specs 2 arrays would be needed.

(Am new to this electronic computer posting stuff)Just another good reason to pack up and head to the country side off grid. This isn’t always possible or easy financially so in that case go off grid in town!! have a natural gas generator system installed(if gas is available) or if you can, do a whole house solar system for about $25,000 and sell the excess electric to THEM. let them pay us for once. I have thought about just having a 12 volt system run for lighting and the refrigerator and try to do solar hot water but haven’t got that part figured out totally yet. Of course if you don’t pay your smart meter, what happens? Yep. they come shut you off. Buy a lot of candles and some ice coolers.I guess if enough people just didn’t pay their electric bill they would have to come get their intrusive meters.Second thought, it doesn’t seem that they would care. Nice world we live in today. If all else fails yell RACISM. Seems to work for the progressives

You’re doing the typical thing that most uninformed people do … ridiculing the messenger. The jury is still out on possible harmful effects of smart meters. Since they emit an RF frequency there is a possibility of a cancerous emission in some instances, depending upon where the smart meter is installed and how close someone is to it, as well as the length of time spent near it. They laughed and ridiculed those that were talking about possible brain cancer to smart-phone cell phone usage as well for years, and now know that people who keep that phone close to their heads for long periods of time ARE at an increased risk for cancer. Do not ridicule what you obviously do not know for certain.
While the risk may be small, it’s still a risk, thus a person should be able to opt out if they so choose without that opting out being an expensive proposition. There is no reason a homeowner cannot keep their old meter and self-read it, sending that reading in monthly so the utility only has to read it, say, 2 times per year. The $25.00 additional meter reading fee per month is ridiculous and just a way to ‘encourage’ people to allow the meter on their home.

In Canada, no Prime Minister has been elected except those who came up the corporate (Power Company) Ladder. These companies take in so much money it’s staggering. NOW they have let a few people (good ol’ boys of Chicago now) have patents on the plugs that THEY put in your outlets to control your amount of electricity; They are behind this whole Carbon Footprint B.S….In other words, they have finally learned how to TAX US FOR THE VERY AIR WE BREATHE.

There have been numerous studies on cell phones & living near power lines.
I actually tried to live next to a power line. It meant that in a neighborhood I was considering on living in that I would have not neighbor out back. It just gives you a feeling of space & privacy. Well that ideal was nixed by the more highly educated spouse.
Personally for cellphones I would minimize the small exposure by using blue tooth or plugging in a head set especially for children. For children they have shown an increased risk of non-malignant lymphomas near the ear.
People including scientists have questioned having so many wireless devices & being in a “soup” of man made electromagnetic radiation.

Posted on January 27, 2013 at 9:45amOk, a few points here. Number 1. Yes smart meters allow them to turn off your power. If you don’t pay your bill, they can flip a switch and off it goes. As opposed to spending the expense to come to your house and turn of the power manually. (What I’m saying is pay your bill.) Number 2. You are no more likely to have a reaction to the wireless on this than on your cordless phone (or cell phone for that matter.) Anybody who tells you otherwise is an idiot. 3.The only information these meters convey is address, and usage. I personally will welcome the worker who comes to my door to install it. And thank him when he is done. I applaud this womans will, however misguided. But any of you who think these meters are in some way infringing on your rights, or perhaps “spying” on you, are paranoid and delusional. Read a science book for god’s sake.

I am sure the libs are recording all these commits and laughing at us.”
You say you are “on the left.” In your comment, you called this woman an idiot. Be careful what you say about others – especially in writing when you can’t spell. Spell-check helps with a lot of things, but not with words that sound alike but are spelled differently, like aloud and allowed or commits and comments. This woman had already told the company she didn’t want the meter installed. The company didn’t try to work anything out with her after she started a conversation with them in advance of the installation. Their response to her was to force their way onto her property, police in hand, and install a device she had already told them she didn’t want. That’s not service, that’s forcible compliance. What happened to “the customer is always right?” Her commitment to her property rights speaks volumes over your lack of spelling skills. You could learn a few things from her.

From what I read what happened was thug tactics and wrongful prosecution.. I would lawyer up, make it a national issue and get others to join the fight to stop the implementation of these intrusive devices…

The companies are offering free installation and panels, and all the owner has to do is pay the solar company the lower energy usage fees. They get them ‘free’ because of some gobblement grant. Now I don’t know the stipulations regarding accepting these panels, but i feel you don’t really own them, because nothing is free. The utility company “leases” the equipment to you from the meter box all the way to the power plant. They don’t need to have control of your meter base, if they want your power off they can just shut the whole block down. They want to avoid that because of people with medical equipment in their homes. Re”volt”(get it?) all you want, if they want you in the dark, they can put you there.

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 10:43pmJOE, take a breath my man, we have much larger battles than this one. The only thing this meter does is allow the utility to read your meter without coming on your property. Isn’t that a good thing for property rights. Instead of them having to pull in every ones driveway, get out and manually log in everyone’s meter reading they drive down the road and all the readings are logged straight into a lap top. I am an electrician and I have also installed these meters. They do not control anything in your house.
You don’t have a “right” to use their service. If you don’t want their electric they will be glad to take their meter off your house. Then you can put whatever meter you want in your meter socket but I can assure you it won’t make the lights turn on because the utility’s service lines will no longer be connected at your weather head.
It would be like telling the cable company that you don’t want a cable modem in your house or you don’t want to use their cable box. They would tell you that you have to use one of their boxes or your service will not work. In the end the ball is in your court. You cant make the supplier change their service. You either take it or leave it. Your options are to play buy their terms or utilize an alternative means to provide your house with power.
I’m as conservative as they get. I just don’t understand how a meter that can be read remotely is causing this much controversy.

3.> Unfortunately, in many if not most areas, zoning and other ordinances require a connection to the electrical grid regardless of actual need, or face having the property condemned.
4.> Even in cases where a homeowner generates all their own power, in many areas the government still requires a connection to the electrical grid (where they typically outline a plan to buy your excess generation for some set rate-per-kWh). I’ve heard but not confirmed that some areas *require* you to sell excess power generated under such scenarios, and forbid storing it.
5.> Also heard but not confirmed – Some areas where smartmeters are being rolled out requires the homeowner to allow the smartmeter to control ALL the power to their home, INCLUDING power generated by the homeowner, so that they can decide to route the power you generate to someone else while you freeze/roast and go without AC for appliances, PCs, TVs, etc, if they so decide that is what they want to do.
6.> Not sure about Ranger’s plan to stun-gun these meters. They were, after all, designed to withstand being on the grid during a lightning storm. God’s TASER is bigger than any of ours. :-)

‘Except a smart meter is located on the outside of your home.’
Actually, for those of us with older homes, the smart meter will be located IN our home.
And frankly, although you’re showing great ignorance here, you’re not the only one. I’d suggest that truly open-minded people do what Beck advises and do their own research about smart meters. You can start here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JNFr_j6kdI
It would also behoove posters here to learn the actual facts about what’s going on in Naperville:
1. There’s a lawsuit pending against the city for illegally holding closed meetings when decisions were made in connection with the meters.
2. The meters in question ARE smart meters.
3. The installation of the meters in Naperville, as in so many places, is the result of crony capitalism. The meters are a cornerstone of Agenda 21 (again, do your own research to get the facts on Agenda 21), a stealth attempt to implement cap-and-trade so that the Lefties don’t have to deal with that pesky Congress or those uncooperative American citizens.
4. There are many rational reasons to oppose Smart Metersw, including health and safety risks, the possibility of hacking, the fact that the meters are essentially warrantless wiretaps, etc. etc.
5. We’re already on the road to mandatory Smart Houses– try getting a home thermostat that’s not chipped.

Sure, you could disconnect from the grid but unless you can prove you have electricity going to your property how long do you think it would be before the government would show up saying that you’re neglecting your kids by not providing them a safe living space? I guess if she put up solar panels and a windmill or ran her power off a generator 24/7, then she could make the case that she doesn’t need an electrical connection. But my guess is that there are laws/regulations about the “safety” of a property and whether it’s deemed “livable” by the powers that be and if so, can child protective services be far behind?
They want to install them here and the power company keeps helpfully telling me that I’m “eligible” to receive one. No thank you. I am not interested in the giving the government the power to turn off my power or monitor the settings in my home. I pay for my power and monitor my own usage, thank you very much. I don’t need a government nanny. I heard recently the alternative is that I will have to pay a fee for them to send someone out to manually read my meter.

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 7:16pmWhy the arrest? Perhaps because she signed onto a lawsuit & they want to make an example of her?
Seems to me if the control freaks want to turn off power they can just cut the grid & everybody is off anyway they don’t need some cutoff in your backyard. Not having the smart meter is not going to stop the coming control over who gets power & who doesn’t it just makes it a little easier for the poor people who have to work for the power company.

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 5:31pmEh, depends on how you finance it. It’d be like installing good siding. The Westinghouse model puts out 235w/h per panel. The average house uses 1.89kw or 1890 watts per day. So you’d need just over 8 panels. Westinghouse has them for 4pack from Lowes for $3100. So about 7 grand all said and done, unless you have professional installation. It is a major home improvement project, and not like buying a personal generator for when the ice knocks out the power lines. I don’t have solar panels, but if I ever get ahead of my bills I might consider installing them to be energy independent.

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 5:45pmDisregarding your naive estimation of initial costs, what is payback time? Remember that the average cost of electricity is 8¢ kWh^-1. What you pay in your bill includes the delivery infrastructure costs. Trust me, it is a boondoggle.

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 10:47pmYou can’t afford the solar panels if you want to use electricity like you do ON THE GRID. If you change your usage habbits.. then the panels become affordable and do-able. Install LED lighting, 25 inch LED tv instead of 55 inch saves 75% usage. Summertime you sleep in the cool basement..now you don’t need airconditioner! … etc etc brings down your usage until you only need a few solar panels and a wind generator. It can be done but it just takes a few changes in lifestyle.

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 11:14pmalso don’t forget that those panels are about as durable as an egg…if you’re anywhere with snow/ice in winter haha good luck…
also remember that they’re output drops in half after approximately 2 years outside…now you have the storage and distribution problem–converting DC to AC is inefficient and expensive…batteries are EXTREMELY expensive and last only a few years due to constant charge/drain/recharge cycles (think a cell phone battery!)
Supposed ‘green energy’ is a farce; the technology for simple, effective off-grid electricity is a dream…it doesn’t exist and the Power Conglomerates KNOW IT!

If you want freedom, you gotta go somewhere else. As for what freedom looks like, or where to find it, I wouldn’t know as I’ve never seen it. I just know that this ain’t freedom and I don’t remember it ever going away so I must have never had it.

Police and military are going to start having to make some decisions in the field…much like the German army did when the SS followed them through Poland. Sgt, I hope you feel good about this. I suspect it will be thrown out or a fine of some sort will be imposed.

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 4:59pmDepends on the deed. If there is not a stated easement in the deed, then they require a Warrant to enter the property uninvited. Then again, this is Amerika, and to assume you have rights is treading on thin ice.

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 7:13pmYou can get a complete solar set-up for between $10-30,000.
“what do you do at night?”
It is called a battery. You have a bank of batteries as part of the system along with an inverter. My father had his house rigged.
If you don’t waste energy, you can get by with a lesser system.
Also, you could run off propane, you can get everything from the “Lehman’s” catalog. They supply the Amish with propane powered fridges, lights, etc…

Posted on January 24, 2013 at 5:19pmNo if you look at the paper work when you first got service it states that they have every right to access the meter. The meter belongs to the power company and not you. I agree they handled it wrong. The should of given the woman a choice. You allow us to change the meter or we are terminating your service and need to collect our meter.

Posted on January 25, 2013 at 9:00amLowerclass, your reasoning skills need to be re-evaluated. Mr166 is actually the sound response.
That the police arrested this woman, should indicate to everyone, your property is an abstract. It’s not really yours, your renting it through taxes.
The proper outcome should have been the power company disconnecting service to the property. Then the home owner could complain all she wanted.
This absolutely shows that the police are not interested in following the law, but to follow their power leaders to keep their jobs. It certainly should cause each and every person to reflect on how far they would be violated by the government, before they actually did anything, and what that anything might be.
