WASHINGTON (AP) — Thousands of pro-life demonstrators marched through Washington to the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday to protest the landmark decision that legalized abortion.

The annual event took on added significance for many in the crowd since it coincided with the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that created a constitutional right to abortion in some circumstances. The demonstrators, carrying signs with messages such as “Defend Life” and “Defund Planned Parenthood,” shouted chants including “Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Roe v. Wade has got to go.” They packed the National Mall and surrounding streets for the March of Life.

“I just felt this 40th year marked a huge anniversary for the law,” said one demonstrator, Pam Tino, 52, of Easton, Mass, who also participated several years ago. “Forty is a very important year in the Bible as well, in terms of years in the desert. And I just felt like maybe this year that was going to be something miraculous that might happen. We might see something going forward with the cause.”

With the re-election of President Barack Obama, she added, “we just have our walking papers. Now we just feel like we have to keep the battle up.”

The large turnout reflected the ongoing relevance of the abortion debate four decades after the decision.

It remains a divisive issue with no dramatic shift in viewpoint on either side; a new Pew Research Center poll finds 63 percent of U.S. adults opposed to overturning Roe, compared to 60 percent in 1992. Earlier this week, abortion opponents marked the anniversary with workshops, prayers and calls for more limits on abortion rights. And even as Obama this week reaffirmed his commitment to “reproductive freedom,” state legislatures continue to consider varied restrictions on a woman’s ability to receive an abortion.

Among the speakers at Friday’s rally was Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator and staunch abortion opponent who last year unsuccessfully sought the Republican presidential nomination. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) also spoke at the event.

Santorum recalled the love and support the country showed for his young daughter, Bella, who was born with a serious genetic condition and whose illness led him to take some time off from the campaign trail. He cited his daughter’s life – “she is joyful, she is sweet, she is all about love” – as a reason to discourage abortion even in instances when women are told that it would be “better” for their unborn children to have one.

“We all know that death is never better – never better. Really what it’s about is saying is it would be easier for us, not better for her,” he said. “And I’m here to tell you … Bella is better for us and we are better because of Bella.”

He said the anti-abortion cause was made up of people who every day advocate for their position outside abortion clinics and at crisis pregnancy centers.

“This movement is not a bunch of moralizers standing on their mountaintop preaching what is right,” Santorum said.

One demonstrator, Mark Fedarko, 44, of Cleveland, said he regularly stands outside of abortion clinics in hopes of discouraging women from going inside.

“There’s God’s law and man’s law,” he said. But I follow God’s law first. Like it says right here, thou shall not kill. That’s the end of the story. We need to protect these children.”

If this gov wants to give individual women the right to terminate life for any reason, I demand to keep my right to own any gun I want for any reason. My ownership of a defense weapon will most likely NOT end in termination of a life. Abortion kills 100% of the time.

America needs to empower it’s young girls to take pride in themselves and focus on their education and careers. It also needs to teach young men that sex does not make you a man. Being a good provider and head of the family makes you a man. Also we need to shut down Hollywood. Our society encourages distructive social behavior without being held accountable. I was happy to see not only young women in the march photos but young men as well. Our country needs more of this types of young people to get the message out. Self control is a good thing.

63% are not pro-abortion – 63% do not want to see abortion made illegal. There is a difference. There are a lot of people in the middle ground that believe that it should be legal with strict limits. It’s funny how Leftists support strict limits on Gun Control but when it comes to abortion you can feel free to do it right up until the due date. It’s a sick, sick world.

If for no other reason, God will judge this nation on killing life he created. We are saying we know better than God, who should live and who should die and we will pay a heavy price for this act of murder on innocent life. Those who accept this and let it happen are as guilty as the ones doing it. Look what is happening to our nation when we have such greed, corruption and killing innocent babies.

@Rationalman- I was under the impression that most “adoption centers” are locally funded, or funded by private, or religious organizations. If I am correct in that assumption then the funding comes from caring individuals- or caring voters at a local level, not from under the jackboot of the Federal IRS.

RationalMan-you are not rational. As for the murder thing, the state of Texas and several others allow the charge of double murder when a pregnant woman is murdered-one count for the mother, one for the fetus. This throws a wrench into the whole works doesn’t it. Additionally, your viewpoint that those who are anti-abortion need to adopt all those they don’t want killed-ridiculous and typical. Your posts show your ignorance as well as your intolerance. Again typical-and sad.

@ratpoisonman The Declaration of Independence does not say, “All men are equal”. The Declaration specifically says, “All men are created equal”. Did you get that? “created”. A fetus in the womb is alive, and is being created. That child in the womb was endowed with Life, not to be destroyed, but to be brought forth into the world. Life is a blessing, not a curse. Shout with joy! A new human being, (innocent, precious, and wonderful), is being formed within the bowels of her mother. Have you have no heart?

There are plenty of people ready and willing to adopt every single aborted child in this country (including probably all the thousands of heartbroken couples who are now forbidden from adopting children from Russia.) I’m a pro-life agnostic who is convinced that if we don’t fight to maintain and strengthen the laws and ethics that were based on the Judeo-Christian ethic and embedded in the Constitution that our entire way of life and this glorious experiment called Democracy will crumble.

@ratpoisonman Not only are most of your comments incoherent but also reprehensible, ignorant and ridiculous.

No human has complete ownership over his body, nor can you claim a human body to be property. If you attempt to commit suicide and the Government determines you are a danger to yourself, the police has the power to take you into protective custody. You are then transported to a mental health facility to receive a mandatory evaluation. Life is a gift from God, and all innocent life must be protected and cherished. You did not grant life to yourself, nor did your mother actually form you in her womb. She carried you, nurtured and protected you while you were being created in her womb. You, nor her, had any say in what image or likeness you were born. All your genetic information was predetermined a long time ago. There’s nothing you could do to change it, modify it, or alter it. It is not yours. You did not create the human race. You did not create yourself. You do not own yourself. Every soul belongs to our Creator. You’re accountable to a higher power. You don’t have the power to lay down your life and to take it back again. You don’t own your soul or your body, neither can any man can claim your soul or your body. A mother can not claim the body of her child in the womb as her property or her body.

As for the rest of your gibberish, I recommend the following:

Interesting that this is the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. The number 40 is significant in the Bible. It generally represents a time of suffering or trial as in the Israelites wandering in the desert for 40 years because of their disobedience to God. The rains fell during the time of Noah for 40 days and 40 nights. Satan tempted Jesus for 40 days in the wilderness. I pray that this year will bring about the end of 40 years of slaughtering innocent babies. We must be on our knees before God repenting of this terrible evil and praying that Roe v. Wade will be overturned.

The United States marks 40 years of legalized abortion in all fifty states at any time for any reason throughout pregnancy on January 22nd, the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. Since that time, there have been approximately 55,772,015 abortions that have destroyed the lives of unborn children right here in America. Based on data from both the Centers for Disease Control and the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute, a former Planned Parenthood research arm. There are more than 3,300 abortions daily and 137 abortions per hour every hour in the United States. Translated another way, an abortion is done about every 30 seconds in the United States. .. That’s Infanticide!

Americans are in no position to criticize the Nazi genocide. Our abortion clinics have murdered far more people than the Nazi’s ever did.

You really haven’t thought this out have you? What if you were one of the 55million? I bet you’d change your mind.

With very rare exception, pro-abortion people are the most self-centered pukes I’ve ever known. Your rhetoric pretty well proves it.

I saw it noted somewhere today the number of young people and teenagers who participate in these protests. That is VERY HEARTENING to me!

Of COURSE they are righteously indignant! Every child since 1973 EVERY ONE of the was born with a big sign on their back that says:

    “I AM DISPENSIBLE!!!”

Jason Howerton, as author of this article, do you intentionally show a bias against this cause by referring to them as “anti-abortion” rather than “pro-life?” Do you refer to those with the opposite view as “pro-abortion” or as “anti-life?” If you use the prefix “pro” for the one, if you are unbiased, you should use the same prefix for the other. Pro-life and pro-abortion. If anti-abortion, then anti-life.

It’s interesting that President Obama surrounded himself with children as props to promote his gun restriction executive orders. His reasoning was that 20 Kindergarten aged children dying was evidence enough to sidestep the 2nd Amendment. Yet 20 pre-Kindergarten aged children are killed every 8 minutes in America through the grisly process of abortion.
As with all pro abortion advocates, I find it difficult to believe that they ever truly have the best interest of children in mind.

I have asked many pro choice liberals if it would be considered murder if we decided to abort babies through any trimester either with hand guns saws or hammers? Posing this interesting question most get irate and tell me I am insensible…. Than I give them the analogy of a murderer, killing a pregnant woman. When that person is charged on murder it’s on two accounts, the mothers life and the child’s life in any given trimester of her pregnancy. The same is for abortion. Abortion at any stage in the womb = MURDER

May God bless all of these people. Abortion should never have been legalized in the first place. It is an evil act that not only destroys a child but can destroy the woman who has one when/if she later realizes what she has done.
If you have had an abortion or been the male that impregnated and encouraged your partner to have one you can be forgiven if you just repent and ask God for forgiveness.

Every year on the TV news they barely mention this march and they only show photos or video facing the front of the line so you have no idea how many attended. Not like on this site where you could see there were people as far as the eye could see (taken from above).
I always feel guilty because there’s a reason I can’t go or I don’t think far enough in advance to arrange to go. My son went one year, though, when he was in college.

    LDS: Liberal Derangement Syndrome.

Putting violent criminals to death to clean up the gene pool is abhorent.
Murdering unborn children in the worship of their deity, Gaia, is perfectly acceptable.

Defense of said life, unborn, innocent life is viewed as madness. Defense of an adult against a violent criminal by a weapon powerful enough to succeed, is viewed the same way.

Leftists are broken. Driven mad by their hatred for themselves, their innate distrust of others, their fervent belief there are far too many humans on the planet and your life isn’t worth saving. But theirs is, if they have enough money or the right connections. “Gun control” is for you, not for them. For liberals, abortion on-demand – but paid for by someone else – is a sacrament, found in the emanations and penumbra of the expectation of a right to privacy in the Constitution; the 2d Amendment explicitly states this right will not be infringed.

    Madness. Evil. Your “choice.”
