Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-Calif.) proposed ban on so-called “assault weapons” would fail to pass the Democrat-controlled Senate if were brought to a vote today, according to an analysis from Bloomberg.
“At least six of the chamber’s 55 Democrats have recently expressed skepticism or outright opposition to a ban,” Bloomberg notes, citing its review of recent lawmaker statements and interviews.
“That means Democrats don’t have a simple 51-vote majority to pass the measure, let alone the 60 votes needed to break a Republican filibuster to bring it to a floor vote,” the report states.
Flanked by rifles and survivors of recent shootings, Feinstein outlined her proposed gun control measures at a press conference in Washington Thursday.
“No weapon is taken from anyone,” Feinstein said. “The purpose is to dry up the supply of these weapons over time.”
“Getting this bill signed into law will be an uphill battle, and I recognize that — but it’s a battle worth having,” she added. “We must balance the desire of a few to own military-style assault weapons with the growing threat to lives across America.”
“The five Democratic senators from traditionally pro-gun states who’ve recently expressed skepticism about the bill are Max Baucus and Jon Tester of Montana, Mark Begich of Alaska, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin of West Virginia,” Bloomberg notes.
“Independent Senator Angus King of Maine, who is caucusing with Democrats, also said he opposes a ban,” the report adds.
Also, despite having supported similar legislation in 2004, it seems unlikely that Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) would back Feinstein’s proposed ban.

Jan. 25, 2013 at 4:10pmActually of course, the vast majority of Americans, both Republicans and Democrats support these gun control measures:
http://www.businessinsider.com/obama-gun-control-gallup-poll-assault-weapons-magazines-newtown-ct-2013-1
For example, 91% of Americans support criminal background checks before any gun purchase. That’s a good example of the game the NRA is playing. They talk about “enforcing existing laws,” such as felons and murders and terrorist shouldn’t buy guns, but they are against measures that make this possible, such as closing the gun show loophole.
Unfortunately, the Republicans aren’t responsive to We the People. They are only responsive to the money men who get the elected, such as the NRA.

Jan. 25, 2013 at 5:35pmMeteors, you may be right on those couple issues sure, and if Feinstein had brought forth a bill with just those things in it it would pass. Unfortunately you willfully leave out the fact that the assault weapon/large capacity magazine ban has traditionally been seen unfavorable by Americans and is falling in popularity as we speak as the shock of the tragedy fades. It’s sitting at pretty close to a 50/50 issue right now. You Dems could have gotten some concessions had you been reasonable and compromised a bit but you guys decided to go for the throat and push an even stricter version of the assault weapons ban from Clinton. I contend you guys KNEW it wouldn’t pass in the House but you care more about scoring political points next time there’s a shooting than you do about compromise and “getting things done.” Lastly, your fake posturing is way way too transparent to be taken seriously.

Jan. 25, 2013 at 7:15pmI received this from the Florida dem senator:
Thank you for contacting me about policy proposals that seek to reduce gun violence in the wake of the tragedy in Newtown.
I am a hunter and have always owned guns, and I support the Second Amendment.
But assault weapons such as AK 47s are intended for killing, not hunting.
Solutions for reducing gun violence must address many areas, from protecting law enforcement and keeping weapons out of the hands of criminals, to school safety, access to mental health services, and confronting a culture that sometimes glorifies violence.
I support reinstating the assault weapons ban and restoring the 10-round limit for ammunition magazines. And, I support universal background checks so that we can know if person buying a weapon has a criminal record.
I appreciate hearing your views on this very important issue, and I will keep them in mind. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future.
Sincerely,
Bill Nelson

Jan. 26, 2013 at 1:29amGhostOfJefferson says, “The freedom to trade your own property with whom you wish without government interference is not a “loophole”. You don’t get to redefine the language any longer, Meteors.”
Actually Ghost, “gun show loophole” is the terminology used in the discussion of gun control. Don’t blame me! Those words aren’t my invention (perhaps you should Google “gun show loophole”).
And the word “loophole” is the exact word to describe the gun sales we’re discussing: a “loophole” is a way of “evading compliance.with a law because of an omission or ambiguity.” Sorry, that’s the right word, and the law in question is federal law that makes it illegal to sell firearms to a felon or fugitive or domestic abuser.
I know that you really aren’t worried about the definition of the word “loophole.” And correct me if I’m wrong, but you believe there are no Constitutional restrictions on the 2nd Amendment. You believe that anyone should have access to armor piercing “cop killer” bullets or bullets that explode on impact, like the one Reagan and Brady were shot with. You believe a person should be able to walk into gun show, buy $1000 worth of guns, and then walk into the parking lot and sell those guns to felons, crazies and terrorists “without government interference.” All in the name of the Constitution. Am I wrong?
Sorry Ghost, most people don’t share your paranoid siege mentality. Alex Jones fan?

I’m pretty sure, as many liberals here have argued, that the laws, courts and Constitution are in ave to protect the minority from the majority.
There is wisdom in the fact that the Constitution is difficult to amend; it provides protection from the whims of emotion.
When presented the facts in a calm, non-emotional setting, reason always wins.
The reason this administration has to hurry up and ‘pass it so we can see what’s in it’ is because their arguments are based on emotion – any delay would allow reason to slip in.
Scrutiny is an enemy of this administration.

Jan. 25, 2013 at 2:41pm…and Angus King is no ‘Independent’. He’s a dyed-in-the-wool obamabot. He may go on the record as non-supportive of the swinestein bill, but he’s got something in mind that smells different and still stinks.
