Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-Calif.) proposed ban on so-called “assault weapons” would fail to pass the Democrat-controlled Senate if were brought to a vote today, according to an analysis from Bloomberg.
“At least six of the chamber’s 55 Democrats have recently expressed skepticism or outright opposition to a ban,” Bloomberg notes, citing its review of recent lawmaker statements and interviews.
“That means Democrats don’t have a simple 51-vote majority to pass the measure, let alone the 60 votes needed to break a Republican filibuster to bring it to a floor vote,” the report states.
Flanked by rifles and survivors of recent shootings, Feinstein outlined her proposed gun control measures at a press conference in Washington Thursday.
“No weapon is taken from anyone,” Feinstein said. “The purpose is to dry up the supply of these weapons over time.”
“Getting this bill signed into law will be an uphill battle, and I recognize that — but it’s a battle worth having,” she added. “We must balance the desire of a few to own military-style assault weapons with the growing threat to lives across America.”
“The five Democratic senators from traditionally pro-gun states who’ve recently expressed skepticism about the bill are Max Baucus and Jon Tester of Montana, Mark Begich of Alaska, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin of West Virginia,” Bloomberg notes.
“Independent Senator Angus King of Maine, who is caucusing with Democrats, also said he opposes a ban,” the report adds.
Also, despite having supported similar legislation in 2004, it seems unlikely that Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) would back Feinstein’s proposed ban.

Jan. 26, 2013 at 10:09amProgressive liberals are mainly afraid of guns for two reasons. They don’t have the mental capacity to safely have one in their position, i.e., they are concerned if engaged in an spirited discussion they would pull it to persuade the debate to their liking, they don’t have self control only the power of politics. They also know “We The People” still have the power, means, and right to defend ourselves.

Jan. 26, 2013 at 1:53amThis legislation is designed to disarm Americans over time. History has taught us many times what happens to the people in a country when they are disarmed.

Yeah, but my kids can’t inherit those guns when I die, and they’re worth a lot of money… so you’re stealing from my kids. How charitable of you!
Further, I’m sick of hearing how people support this or that “common sense” proposal. There are 0 common sense proposals from these people.
The “Gun Show Loophole” should be called “The Private Sale Loophole”. No FFL dealer at a gun show will sell you a gun without a Form 4473 being filled out and a NICS check run. NOT ONE.
What liberals conveniently forget or don’t know is that no person can use NICS without being an “enrolled FFL” dealer. I can’t just call up NICS and ask about Joe S. and his metal/criminal history.
The FBI doesn’t want to deal with every citizen privately selling a gun, nor the crank calls they would get. Local police can run a check for you, but it’s not national. It’s entirely possible to run a local check on a purchaser and have them come up squeaky clean when they’ve been convicted of something or mentally adjudicated in another state.
Common sense would be proposing a second NICS like system for private sales, but no one has done that.

Jan. 25, 2013 at 10:39pmExactly! Republicans Do Not filibuster this bill in the Senate. Let it come up for a vote so all Dems will have to cast their vote and be on the record on whether they support the 2nd Amendment. At least 5-6 will be ejected from Congress next election if they vote for the Feinkenstein’s bill, this will give the Republicans control of Congress. Harry Reid does not want this bill to come up for a vote !

Jan. 25, 2013 at 8:54pmOnce again sendthemeteors shows his/her ignorance. There is NO gun show loophole. When you buy a gun from a gun show dealer they do a background check. You may find someone in the parking lot selling a gun to another individual which today is completely legal. Sales between private individuals is still legal today. Inside the show only licensed dealers are selling firearms and a background check is run on everyone buying a firearm.
Wake your sendthemeteor azz up and quit using MSNBC talking points.

Jan. 25, 2013 at 6:35pmRemember, Reid said he’s going to change rules this month, as I recall specifically the filibuster rule.
I hope Republicans remember that and put the changed rule into massive effect once they get the Senate again.

Jan. 25, 2013 at 5:08pmDon’t fall into the little word trap gun-grabbers use of calling guns “weapons”. A gun is only a weapon if used to protect or threaten someone. A gun then is no more a weapon than a carving knife or a car or a baseball bat.
