Obama Hits Violence in Football: ‘If I Had a Son’ I’m Not Sure If I Would ‘Let Him Play’
WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — Football’s first fan isn’t sure he’d let his son play the game, in light of the impact it takes on its players. It is the violence inherent in the sport that he explicitly targets as problematic and a potential barrier to allowing a son partake (pending he actually had one).
“I’m a big football fan, but I have to tell you, if I had a son, I’d have to think long and hard before I let him play football,” President Barack Obama tells The New Republic.

President Barack Obama tries to wave away a fly buzzing around his head as he speaks in the State Dining Room of the White House in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013 (Photo Credit: AP)
“And I think that those of us who love the sport are going to have to wrestle with the fact that it will probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence,” Obama said. “In some cases, that may make it a little bit less exciting, but it will be a whole lot better for the players, and those of us who are fans maybe won’t have to examine our consciences quite as much.”
In an interview in the magazine’s Feb. 11 issue, Obama said he worries more about college players than he does about those in the NFL.
“The NFL players have a union, they’re grown men, they can make some of these decisions on their own, and most of them are well-compensated for the violence they do to their bodies,” Obama said. “You read some of these stories about college players who undergo some of these same problems with concussions and so forth and then have nothing to fall back on. That’s something that I’d like to see the NCAA think about.”

Posted on January 27, 2013 at 2:58pmThe only flags in the NFL should be penalty flags. The more “protection” rules the more sissy ball it becomes. I love football but it is going soft. As for Obama not surprising in the least.

Posted on January 27, 2013 at 2:08pmThe caption at the top says it all:’ if I had a son, I’m not sure I would let him play…’
just a continuation of the king/subject relationship @ the same time promoting hypocrisy.
‘Dad, I want to be a punter, not a guard, a lineman, kick returner etc’ No junior, too dangerous.’ Hey son, theres a game on, the Skins are playing the Pack.’ Here you have Junior emulating his father’s enthusiasm, and he is nipped in the bud. ‘I DO NOT WANT you to play!’ says the sire.
So by a lateral line of thinking, the king says to his other children, you and I, ‘I do not think you should have those guns….I want you to have national health insurance…I want you to see the absolute credibility of global warming…I want to appoint czars, czarinas, I want to legislate, adjudicate, execute, and appoint whosoever I will, because good children obey the mighty father.’
Back to football. Obama is a big fan because of how the game is played….NOW…..even though he will say otherwise. If he saw enough of the hurt, he should watch ping pong. where the worst that could happen is a good sweat. But Mr Obama, no one cares what you think about football.

Posted on January 27, 2013 at 2:02pmThis is nothing more than a signal to all the (dark) forces on the left that football needs to be toned down. O thinks the game needs more participants and less competitors. If necessary, government WILL get involved. It has already begun. The NFL is considering replacing the kickoff with just placing the ball (gently) on the 20 yard line.

Posted on January 27, 2013 at 2:01pmMany ex-NFL players are shooting themselves in the chest? Seau, one to two other copy cats? That is not many. Why did we not hear about this crap when players wore leather helmets? These ex-NFL football players have been concussed many times over, but to say that is why Seau shot himself is a cop out. Seau shot himself because he was lauded from the time he was in high school, throughout college, and into a lengthy professional career. His persona could not stand him not being “the man” any longer. His personal life was falling apart, and he just couldn’t enter life as an ex-NFL football player. He let football define who he was.

Posted on January 27, 2013 at 2:00pmYou have to remember that the President didn’t say anything about regulations, governement forcing changes etc.
He said: that knowing the dangers he would have to think long and hard about whether he would let his son play football.
He said: that he doesn’t have a problem with NFL players getting injured because they are grown men and are well compensated with good pay and insurance if they get an injury.
He said: that college players don’t have anything to fall back on if they become disabled.
There’s nothing unreasonable about any of the above. He’s not suggesting (yet), that the government needs to step in and rule football.

Posted on January 27, 2013 at 2:23pmWhat do you expect when you have men dressed up in suits of armor just like Medieval times. Only the suits are made of high impact plastic rather than steel. Of course they are going to hit as hard as they can, because they think they are invincible. Put that on top of the fact that you have so many players that are show offs. They love to grandstand and taunt the other team. They got their “ice” while “clubbin” when they aren’t on the field playing. You have a bunch of players that are just one step below prisoners. Most are just thugs and act like thugs off the field. This shouldn’t be any surprise.
