Obama Hits Violence in Football: ‘If I Had a Son’ I’m Not Sure If I Would ‘Let Him Play’
WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — Football’s first fan isn’t sure he’d let his son play the game, in light of the impact it takes on its players. It is the violence inherent in the sport that he explicitly targets as problematic and a potential barrier to allowing a son partake (pending he actually had one).
“I’m a big football fan, but I have to tell you, if I had a son, I’d have to think long and hard before I let him play football,” President Barack Obama tells The New Republic.

President Barack Obama tries to wave away a fly buzzing around his head as he speaks in the State Dining Room of the White House in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013 (Photo Credit: AP)
“And I think that those of us who love the sport are going to have to wrestle with the fact that it will probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence,” Obama said. “In some cases, that may make it a little bit less exciting, but it will be a whole lot better for the players, and those of us who are fans maybe won’t have to examine our consciences quite as much.”
In an interview in the magazine’s Feb. 11 issue, Obama said he worries more about college players than he does about those in the NFL.
“The NFL players have a union, they’re grown men, they can make some of these decisions on their own, and most of them are well-compensated for the violence they do to their bodies,” Obama said. “You read some of these stories about college players who undergo some of these same problems with concussions and so forth and then have nothing to fall back on. That’s something that I’d like to see the NCAA think about.”

Posted on January 27, 2013 at 5:02pmFirst thanks for clarifying that photo. I thought, given the halos etc., that he was blessing the crowd beneath the window….
But if Obama did have a son, he would have sent him to Havana or Venezuela or China to be indoctrinated.

Posted on January 27, 2013 at 4:20pmLet me see if I’ve got this straight? Obama wouldn’t let his non-existent son (to the best of our public knowledge) play football but Putting real American women into combat (which theoretically could include his REAL daughters) is OKAY? –I just want to make sure my mind is not the one that is ~~t~w~i~s~t~e~d~~!!!

Posted on January 27, 2013 at 3:36pm“If College level players get hurt, they have nothing to fall back on”. Not so – at least for another six month. The College players have their free ride Degrees to continue on with. After all, they ARE going to COLLEGE to get a Degree, and ‘most’ realize they are not going to fall within the single digit percentage that actually go on to become NFL “stars”. I say ‘most’ – because you know who I’m talking about. Aside from that, all College players (depending on level) get a huge scholarship (even in a Community College) and many get a full free ride. NOW – I say “six months” because Obama’s even going to make scholarships meaningless when he signs to forgive all College loans from “X” time to “X” time. This will give “everyone” (again, you know who I mean) the free ride to be what ever they dream of being, PLUS takes away all the reason for High School ages to push themselves in to being a better person by working toward a scholarship. It also boosts the “plain little fat boy” into not being bullied by the football team and cheerleaders. Nice “utopian concept” that WON’T work. I (uh..I mean) no ‘cool’ kid is going to stop popping the ‘nerds’ on the head with their class ring. Trying to ‘level the field’ will only make it worse.
Level playing field for all – Everyone gets a chance at bat – Everyone gets a ribbon for participation. Oh…and everyone gets a wholesome bean sprout pita during the “health break”. NERDS!

Posted on January 27, 2013 at 3:32pmexcellent question,,
it is a “modern liberal” publication recently purchased by facebook cofounder Chris Hughes
Hughes was the coordinator of online organizing for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign on My.BarackObama.com, the campaign’s online social networking website. He was the subject of an April 2009 cover story in Fast Company magazine under the headline, “The Kid Who Made Obama President; How Facebook Cofounder Chris Hughes Unleashed Barack’s Base – and Changed Politics and Marketing Forever.”
Hughes is openly gay and in 2009 attended President Barack Obama’s first state dinner with his then boyfriend Sean Eldridge, Political Director of Freedom to Marry.
Ex-Obama Aide Buys The New Republic
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/03/09/former-obama-aide-and-facebook-pioneer-buys-the-new-republic.html
“The not-so-good news is that Hughes worked for the Obama campaign. Does that mean the venerated liberal magazine will turn into a pro-Obama vehicle?
In its heyday, The New Republic was a left-leaning magazine that challenged some of the tenets of Democratic liberalism and included more conservative voices. (Indeed, our own Andrew Sullivan edited the magazine during the ’90s.) It faced a problem under owner Marty Peretz during the 2000 campaign, because Peretz was so close to Al Gore. But Peretz has been at odds with the Democratic establishment on some issues, especially in foreign policy.”

Posted on January 28, 2013 at 6:50amWell, Obama does not have a son and he needs to let parents that do have sons make their own decisions. I didn’t play football but it was because my mother and father said no, not the government.
If they were both still alive, this is probably the only thing in the universe they and Obama would agree on.
