Parents of children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School appeared before a subcommittee of the Connecticut Legislature on Monday to speak about gun control. While some used the platform to promote stricter firearms legislation, at least one parent became passionate, claiming that there are more than enough laws on the books, that current regulations simply need to be enforced and that the nation needs to embrace personal responsibility.
Mark Mattioli, whose six-year-old son James perished inside of the school, testified that a plethora of new gun laws isn’t the answer and that, instead, personal responsibility, accountability and civility are the best path forward. He made his comments as intense debate surrounding gun control and the causal factors behind the shooting continue to be at the forefront of public discussion.
The grieving father, who ended up receiving a standing ovation, said that he believes in “simple, few gun laws” and that there are already “more than enough on the books.” Mattioli contends that “the problem is not gun laws” and that these regulations simply need to be enforced.
“How do we expect to have any impact on a society and say, ‘We’re going to pass a law. Hey this is inexcusable. We can’t allow any more of this. Let’s pass a law that will change the course of the future’ when we don’t enforce the laws that we have on the books — the most important laws?,” he asked.
Mattioli also addressed mental health, a key issue that has often fallen second to gun control in discussions surrounding the Sandy Hook shooting.
“I think there’s much more promise for a solution in identifying, researching and creating solutions along the lines of mental health issues — I think there’s a lot of work that can be done there,” he said. ”I believe the solution may not be as easy to implement as I might hope, but it’s a simple concept. We need civility across our nation.”
At one point Mattioli got so emotional during the the testimony that he had to move onto a new topic. He eventually went on to say that “we need common decency to prevail,” dismissing calls for greater gun control. Mattioli gave the specific example of Chicago, a city with tough gun laws, but one that continues to experience intense violence. He noted that gun laws did not protect the hundreds of people who died in that city last year.

Jan. 28, 2013 at 11:27pmOn this day of the ARC it can be asked is your belief in the Constitution of the United States of America the same as America’s Founding We The People??? If so, your are a Constitutional Republican and you should be proud of yourself …you are We The People!!!
There is a difference between Constitutional Republicans and the treasonous republicans for which We Constitutionally minded Constitutional We The People most certainly must invoke charges of being a genuine threat and also betrayer to their very own Constitutionally sworn oaths to be a servant to and guardian to the U.S. Constitution and We The People!!!
Constitutional Republicans must acknowledge that We The People’s tax paid government employees most certainly are behaving like out of control childlike traitors to the Constitution of the United States of America and We The People!!!
We The People…We Need To Talk!

How many school incidences involving some one on PCP would it take before we made the connection.

Jan. 28, 2013 at 9:49pmWe would be 100% better off if we would just STOP LISTENING to the left!
But nooooo – we react like Pavlov’s dog every time one of them opens their pie hole.
I wish the GOP would just grow a backbone and say “STFU” to 99% of the Democrat’s silly proposals.
Next time Diane Feinstein says something – Just LAUGH and walk away.

Jan. 28, 2013 at 9:15pmHe’s right, what good do more laws do? They’re just more laws for criminals to break. Oh yeah, that’s the idea. More laws broken, the more they can justify hiring, and indoctrinating more law enfarcement members. That’s the game people. Who do you think the so called peace loving left are going to use to take your guns? That’s right kids, cops with GUNS!!! And if you don’t think they will fire on civilians, just ask the Branch Davidians, or Randy Weavers Kid. OH, that’s right, they were killed by law enfarcement, OFFICIALS!!!

Jan. 28, 2013 at 8:59pmMr Maittioli is absolutely correct! Kids now (especially inner city) have no parental guidance. Liberals breed that with their “free thinking” and “kids have rights” crap. I’m not a fan of reality TV but I did watch a few wife swaps and they would take families from the opposite spectrum often one would be die hard liberals, the other strict conservatives. It never failed, the conservative family children were well spoken and polite. The liberal family children were big mouthed, know it all, in your face, whining brats! No amount of TV editing can either change the fact that they had ZERO parental guidance.

Jan. 28, 2013 at 8:49pmThe second Amendment – Right to Bear Arms; “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” No where does it call for registration, back ground checks, or licensing. Why do so many people think that disregarding the 2nd Amendment is the responsible thing to do, but oppose back ground checks and registration for voting?

Jan. 28, 2013 at 8:45pmCommon courtesy is the foundation of gun control, even if you don’t own a weapon? Mental health begins with common courtesy, not billions of money poured into tests developed by university scientists to determine who is mentally “healthy”, who have political power such as those gained during the era of Nazi Germany?
If you are not locked up in a mental hospital, you have the right to bear arms? As a common courtesy, you leave them alone if you are feeling sick but know you will get better soon? Right now, the only people who are mentally healthy enough to bear arms is a Sen. from California who introduced legislation to “dry up the supply of guns”?
Mental health diagnosis are hypothesis, and it takes time to evaluate and treat real from imagined conditions, and while the mental health industry does have limited success, they also have catastrophic failures that they don’t want to talk about?
In other words, the majority of the country will always be mentally healthy enough to bear arms, else the legal rights would never been enacted, and that should not be the loop hole for liberals to deny civil rights? Why should politcians determine who is mentally healthy enough to bear arms?
The real problem here was that there was a gun free zone, that the person knew he could take adantage of, creation of those zones creates mental images that push otherwise stable mental people over the edge?

Jan. 28, 2013 at 8:37pmIt’s good to finally see a rational response to this from someone directly involved. Criminals dont obey laws. Thats why they are criminals. Lanza was breaking the law. GEE imagine that.

Jan. 28, 2013 at 7:55pmYou can’t regulate civility. Regulations are a written expression of how law should be carried out, not how you must live your life. In a free society you can’t force someone to smile, or be happy, or to be polite. If you try, it’s no longer living in a free society.

Jan. 28, 2013 at 7:30pmMr. Mattioli is absolutely right. I can hear my late parents and grandparents saying the exact same thing in my memories so long ago. Our rogue Communist divider in chief, his mentors (Bill Ayres, Frank Marshal Davis et al) and disciples have worked hard over the years to dumb down and break down common sense, Christian and American values in their zealous quest for Communist domination of the American people. Mr. Mattioli has just punched a big hole in Obama, Biden, Clinton, Bloomberg, Morgan and others in the extreme left movement of their goal to disarm Americans in order to “fundamentally” control us — hardcore tyranny. However, the pattern is clear, these sinister politicians will not stop at mere verbal resistance and we can expect more Sandy Hooks with greater numbers until they reach their blood thirsty goal. Where will it be? malls, TSA security check points, city centers? Who knows. . .We have to keep and bear arms to stay free and they need to disarm us to take our freedom away. Simple and sinister. We cannot give up our failsafe no matter what they stage, say or do. We cannot depend on the mid-term elections or the Presidential elections in 2016, they will lie, cheat and steal it. The right /left representation no longer exist. The time to apply all of our political pressure is today.

Jan. 28, 2013 at 7:07pmThis is amazing to me. After having a close family member struggle with mental health issues all throughout life while being treated by mental health professionals I know first hand what it is like. As someone that knows the individual better than any doctor could ever know them, family members are totally shut out because of “patient confidentiality.” Although very important there has to be some sort of compromise. We need to be able to be fully involved with patient care and be able to communicate with the professionals when something is not right. Very often the medications do not work and can make things much worse but we have no avenue in which to have a change made in order to get back to reality. It’s one endless, horrible struggle for someone you love. Believe me, there are millions or folks out there that are desperate just to be allowed to help those they love and no longer have to scream silently for change.
