Vermont Gun Range Bans Police Officers From Facility Over Proposed City-Wide Ban on Semi-Automatic Rifles
A Vermont gun range has banned the Burlington Police Department from using its facility after City Council voted to advance a proposed ban on semi-automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines. And given the fact that such facilities are limited in the area, the move could impact when and where officers can go target shooting.
Officials with the Lamoille Valley Fish and Game Club told Fox News that it is hard for the facility to support the city, which includes police officers, due to the attempted gun grab by City Council.
“We have members in Burlington as well as members of our club that are going to be passing through Burlington and this would directly affect them and we felt that a prejudicial vote like that was going to be non-supportive of our club and being non-supportive of our club makes it very difficult to support Burlington City,” the club’s chairman Bob Boivin said.
“It is a constitutional issue. I mean, it’s not just a Second Amendment constitutional issue; but it’s also a constitutional issue for Vermont. We have laws that have the state governing our gun controls in this area and they’re looking to supersede those,” he added.
Responding to the gun range ban, the Burlington Police Department said in a statement: “It is unfortunate that this important and much-needed community dialogue regarding gun control currently under way in the City of Burlington and across the nation has resulted in this action.”
Burlington City Councilman defended the proposed assault rifle ban, saying in the absence of federal legislation or state law, the city feels the measures are needed “to protect our citizens.”
In addition to the introduced city ordinance being unconstitutional, Bovin says city-by-city gun laws would create problems for gun owners.
“If you’re going to a shoot, say in one end of Vermont to the other, you have to check the laws for every town in between, and you will pass through a half a dozen different towns, and that makes it almost impossible for someone to stay as a legal gun owner, and that’s what we’re concerned about,” he explained.
“The Burlington City Council’s proposal to ban certain assault weapons is far from being implemented. City voters would get a say in 2014. Then the measure would require approval by the Vermont legislature. Finally, if it does become law, it’s likely to face a constitutional challenge from gun-rights advocates,” Fox News reports.

Assault weapons weren’t even used in any crimes in their area, yet the dorks on the council say it will make their city safer to ban them. How utterly stupid to claim something like that. Like everything else about these pitiful morons they engage in following the lemmings over a cliff, because it sounds good to do so.
People who are nutty and jump up to support goofy trends have a collective mental disorder described in France as a “shared madness,” which means what they engage in or support makes no sense.
The people involved in the Manson murders and the people who drank the kool aid in Jonestown all had a “shared madness.”

They told me that most police are not really in touch with what they might have to do when they strap on a gun and go to work. He said most do not like to think that they might have to shoot someone and if they do the legal system might get them. So he says to them Gun Control just makes their job easier.

I’ll answer that…I will agree with your friend on a couple of accounts and disagree on others: Most line cops outside of the big cities are vehemently against gun control of any type. A some big city cops feel the same way, but others see firearms as a tool and have no other interest in their use beyond work and don’t care for them otherwise. Others are active in training outside work, are on specialty units and/or are competitive enough to spend additional range time to get the “distinguished expert” shooting badge. SWAT guys are expected to maintain a 90% proficiency level on our agency, and a lot of line officers set that as a goal. A lot of the attitude depends on the culture within the agency. If they have a high speed firearms cadre, the troops generally have a positive attitude toward shooting/training. If all they care about is getting everyone through the periodical quals, that will be recognized by the troops and some will just go through the motions.
We are a medium sized municipal department in a fairly liberal western state. 2/3 of the cops are hunters and recreational shooters, the other third are not “gun folks” but I can say without reservation that 99% of the department is pro 2nd amendment. In a recent meeting we agreed we would have no part of any confiscation. We made that clear to our admin. So far our local Sheriff’s Dept. has not made that commitment. RLTW

OK, who let the basement door open again?
You are picking and choosing what words to follow within the 2nd Amendment Encinom. The whole amendment states that “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
Furthermore – the Supreme Court (who upheld the Affordable Care Act – which you agreed with) ruled in 2007, when it struck down Washington DCs ban on handguns, that “The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.”
So SCOTUS set the precedent in 2007 with it’s opinion as such. Your argument is over.

That said, I feel for the LEO’s..I’m sure not all of them are for gun control. The range, by doing this, is punishing men that need to practice to keep themselves safe on the job. I have a lot of friends that are LEO’s and prison guards..they are required to do a lot of training to be certified. They do not believe in ANY kind of gun control. They wish more citizens would arm themselves responsibly…that is what truly would make their jobs easier. Didn’t quite go that way, but it was the Clinton admin that did give us the Brady Bill I & II. That didn’t last either. My one and only true point and suggestion to you is to take a logical view and understanding of what is really going on around us. I’m not saying to stick your head in the sand and hope that all goes well. Pay attention, stay in touch with those you trust, and do what is necessary. But, as I have said, some of the things, and I REPEAT, “SOME” OF THE THINGS you put out frames yourself as a bit of a crackpot. Yes the government is buying up ammo and guns. At a much larger rate than ever seen before. I agree with you. But compared to civilians in the past three years, it is just a drop in the bucket. And firearms aren’t “one use and discard” items (read: consumables.) So it isn’t like people are just using them up and replacing them. They are out there. They will ALWAYS be out there (short of outright confiscation which would lead to revolution/civil war.)
Eventually, you will see people who believe in the constitution leaving the states that don’t and moving to states where they are in company with like minded people. Eventually the US will become fully blue state/red state … with only the moderate uncaring people living in either. I don’t think I have to express how very unstable and dangerous a situation like that in America can be (as history has proven in our civil war.)

Posted on January 28, 2013 at 8:37pmI don’t like the ‘modern sporting rifles’ or similar approach either. That is being politically correct. It grew out of the 1994 ban, where manufacturers had to put the word “sporting” or “sporter” in the names of their rifles. And afterwards unto today as well, where “sporting” is the most common adjective you find in the firearms and ammo business. If it doesn’t say sporter or sporting or hunting, it won’t be imported or sold. It’s too much kissing the arses of the idiots who try to push the 2nd A. as being only for hunters and sportsmen. They hope for the good old “..if you say something long enough and officially enough, it will become the perceived truth, even if it is a total lie.” I’m sick of it.

and did u ever notice those who are ‘armed’ do not make a federal case against they who want to go armless?? There could be equal attacks on the citizens who DO NOT own/carry/ etc, yet, this half of the tale is always left out. We leave these people alone, they have every right to go armless, now leave me alone for exercising MY rights….

Those idiots couldn’t think their way out of a wet paper sack yet they’re writing laws and regulations on the federal state and local level infringing on our right to own firearms. You might say well they’re just saying you can’t have a high capacity magazine. The U.S constitution says congress doesn’t have the authority to write ANY laws infringing on our right to bear arms.

Posted on January 28, 2013 at 8:58pmWell, hasn’t that happened to Colorado?
20 + years ago I did some work for a lady who moved from Colorado to NJ. She told me then that so many had moved from Ca. to Colorado because the overall climate (business/regulations) in Ca. was so bad. Now, we see that Colo. is a Blue state.
Vermont? My wife and I used to vacation there in the late 70′s and early 80′s. Haven’t been there in 20 years. It is pretty, but their politics are way too far left for me. We’ll take our money elsewhere.
I haven’t checked, but I’d guess the violent crime as related to guns is low in Vt. I’d also guess that crime is low due to the demographics. I’ll check the stat’s later. I’m off to watch “Pickers”.

Posted on January 28, 2013 at 7:30pmGood precedent. Also in the light of the Illegal use of power by Eric Holder to strongarm banks to deny loans to gun manufacturers, I think all gun manufacturers should refuse to sell firearms to government agencies. Notice that holder did not try to deny loans to Colt, which is a Government supplier. The manufacturers have plenty of demand from citizenry, they don’t need the government orders. The profit margin is likely much higher on civilian sales. It would be hilarious if their 7000 unit PDW order was cancelled due to their actions against the industry. It is now full scale economic and warfare. And it was initiated by their side. Deny them Material support in any fashion.

Posted on January 28, 2013 at 7:53pmCIVILWARCOMETH, If you can come up with seditious info to go with the helicopter in flight, please give some of this a rest. Starting back in the ’70s when I was first in the Army we were all over the place in Army helicopters too. In fact, it was nothing unusual through the time I retired during the last Clinton Administration. Damned if we ever did anything other than “our” missions, training missions, to something as crazy as actual transportation. Even during the Clinton era black helicopter scares. Yeah, our helicopters were and still are such a super dark shade of green (almost what the Germans refer to as schwarzgruen) that in the air they often do look black.
But, as I mentioned, if you come up with some truly supportive information I’ll gladly read it. And, please don’t give me any bull about the UN. Believe me, most of the troops on support assignment to the UN can’t poop then successfully wipe their asses afterwards. Well, except for the Canadians, who by the way have one of the smallest armed forces in the First World. Notice that I said “armed forces” and not Army? While they have Army, Naval, and Air Forces, they are one element because they are so small with certain MOSs that can be assigned to any of the force structures as necessary. Great guys and I have trained with them before. Very professional, but collectively not enough force to make a gnat fart on a world wide level. What I am saying is they are the best I have seen regarding UN troops.

Posted on January 28, 2013 at 8:09pmRJJ……Just a few years ago I’d never believe it was possible. There is a recent chain of events that are in fact worrisome. The progs have there masiah in office, they can taste blood in the water. To assume it could never happen here is a really bad assumption. How are we different……..all the elements are in place, our society has never been so dumbed down. Why wouldn’t the powers that be make a move? What exactly is there to hold them back, our military is exhausted from 11 years of war, our country is in a slide, and I believe its being artificially held up till the right time. Where did all the trillions go from Tarp and Stim and QE1-infinity. I respect your posts but to dismiss the possibility is not a good idea.

Posted on January 28, 2013 at 8:55pmSTELEX, CIVILWARCOMETH, Okay, I’ve been retired for not quite 17 years yet, but I am still in touch with many still active duty military personnel. Furthermore, my adult son is in touch with a good number of his friends who are also still active duty while some have recently gotten out, but that is more because of the lifting of DADT. Of those we know, collectively they know hundreds if not a thousand or more active duty who will refuse to take up arms against American civilians. Many I would expect to take up arms against any superior who attempted to order them to do such. Granted, these people can be weeded out, but it would take close to an another complete generation or more. Yeah, there are some in the military, various LE elements, and yeah, I used to be a cop too, as well as certain other recently armed government types are willing to do anything they are told. Well, as far as I am concerned, they can face the next version of the Nurnberg Trials (That is the correct spelling) should they try anything against us.
As for the next few years anyway, and I am not somebody with his head in the sand by any means. In ’94 I was going through the massive shot records update to go to fly into Entebbe, then move to Rwanda but the mission was scrubbed after the neutered UN stood by and watched the Hutu/Tutsi massacre. Half a million killed and the UN could do nothing against those armed with clubs and machetes. My suggestion in continued.

Don’t fall for anybody who says we are being invaded by the UN. My son’s former Boy Scout troop could stop them with slingshots. I’ve seen them in action. Or, rather inaction. So, please don’t be offended by what I am about to say, but CIVILWARCOMETH, you in particular, please tone down the crackpot attitude at least a few notches. As I said yesterday or Saturday, I do read your comments, and often agree with many. But, not all. When you have some proof put it out there for us all to see. Otherwise you are feeding the trolls. Again, allow me to reiterate that I do have my finger on the pulse of what is going on in this country. I have retired, and former Army buds all over the country and we share our concerns often. But, all is nowhere near lost yet. There are far more people on our side than you might think. I just wish they had gotten off their asses and voted. The Ron Johnson voters helped 0bama as much as Perot helped Clinton in ’92, and again in ’96. But please, we have more than enough of a Chicken Little Brigade with the global whining crowd. Get your facts together and put them out here in a well put together and clear manner and if things are truly going to hell in the proverbial hand basket, you can count on many of us a minutemen.

Posted on January 28, 2013 at 9:21pmRJJ, I hope your right. Sincerely. And if you are then no worries. But there is a new vibe and if your paying attention you can’t say you don’t feel it. The vibe I feel is the powerful feel that they have what they want and are ready to use it. I trust my instincts, and they tell me that something wicked this way comes. The markets don’t match reality. The politicians seem more vapid than ever, but its more than that. We have an out of control gov, controling the message through the media, half the population believes government is looking out for them. A good liar knows when to strike, before the lie comes back on them. The elite are about to strike, because more and more people are waking up. If I’m wrong all is good, if I’m write you’ll see a stock market crash, the dollar spiral down and society will fall apart. Call me paranoid, but again I trust my guts and I don’t trust anything about this administration, media or anyone in the UN. They have an agenda and the will have to move before to many start to understand. And I promise …… if we are still chatting here in 2016. I will apologize and send you a couple pounds of lobster.

Posted on January 28, 2013 at 9:37pmSTELEX, I still recommend to always remain vigilant with eyes and ears open at all times. We do have a president who does not respect or plan to follow the tenants of our Constitution. He studies and taught the Constitution for one reason, to find out how he can skirt it to get away with implementing his agenda. I do take pleasure with his boo hoo sessions with the press when somebody manages to head him off at the pass. But yes, by all means, we have to pay attention to every little thing this man does and says, as well as read between the lines.
I agree with everything you just said. I agree with you that this man will try to do anything to crash this country and the remainder of the left will continue to kiss his ass through the demise. Yeah, we are so evil. Funny, while I was in other countries in my day, I heard the exact opposite by those on the outside looking in. And, I have driven to Paris and through France a number of times. It is generally their elite class who hates America the most. Actually, gave me the impression that is was more envy than hate.
Lobsters! The last time I was in Providence, RI after a tour in Germany my Dad took me to his favorite seafood restaurant and my happy ass sat there and stuffed down two. Boiled and baked. Used to get decent lobster when I lived in Florida, but it is hard to come by here in Alabama. Rubber Lobster (Red Lobster) is the closest then we have. But, I love southern food too, so all is not lost on me.

Used to do a lot of riot training in the early days too. So, please tell me, just what subversive activity did we pull on the nation then? Also, I said that you basically do sound like a crackpot. You can do better, and have proven so in other posts. I listened to that NC police officer. I also heard similar things while in the service during the Carter administration, and a lot more again during the Clinton Administration. Nothing and I say again NOTHING of the kind ever happened. Not saying to stop paying attention. That would be the best way to just give up. But kid, I’ve already been there and done that a few times already. Have you? You sound to be just very new at this. The only thing that I will claim to be right about at the moment is to remain vigilant, pay attention, be prepared and never give up. Also, don’t focus too much attention upon yourself.
I do recall the gun hysteria going on in ’93. Although the reporting is more wide spread than then, it was there indeed. It still took Clinton a full Democrat trifecta to pull off both of the Brady bills. The Dems lost both the House and Senate shortly afterwards. There are already Democrat law makers who are visibly trembling in their boots over this go around. There is no doubt that 0bama wants to disarm the country entirely regardless what he says. There was no long gun used at Sandy Hook IAW the FBI investigative team put out the day after that dufus medical examiner lied. But, the media is in lock step with that story. They are ignoring the most used weapon in these murders to go after the so called assault weapons first. If they succeed they know they can then say the murders are only increasing with the use of sidearms. Now, turn those in next. Its for the children. Let your senators and congressmen know how you feel, and get friends and relatives to do the same thing. You’ll never convince the likes of our ENCINOM or WANG_DANG_DOODLE, so don’t waste your time. Go to those next on your list.
