Another Democratic Politician Goes After Conservative Media: The Idea of ‘Out of Control’ Spending Is a Fox Thing

Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu: Discretionary Spending Not Out of Control, Despite What You Hear on Fox News

Over the weekend, President Barack Obama targeted conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh and Fox News as the source of disharmony in Washington. Now, Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) appears to be following the president’s lead, if not taking it a step further.

In a fiery speech on the Senate floor, the senator declared:

“I am not going to keep cutting the discretionary budget, which by the way is not out of control, despite what you hear on Fox News. It’s mandatory spending that is rising rapidly, because the greatest generation that gave us the greatest nation the world has ever heard is dying and they need hospice care, they need Social Security, and they need hospitals. And if they want to cut them go right ahead, I’m going to be a little more gentle.

It’s unclear why Landrieu thinks Fox News limits itself to discussions on discretionary spending– when the issue comes up, normally “spending” in general is the topic.

Commentators are already beginning to weigh in on Landrieu’s statement.

Robert Laurie wrote on former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain’s website:

We’ll set aside the fact that we just passed a massive, unpopular, [health care] law which was supposed to lower the cost of all those things.

In 2009, non-military discretionary spending skyrocketed thanks to the Obama stimulus package. It’s since settled back down but, in 2013, it will still be roughly 10% higher than it was before he took office. It’s true that mandatory spending is increasing six times faster than discretionary. However, at a time when the nation is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, no cuts should ever be taken off the table.

Despite what Landrieu believes, it doesn’t matter that mandatory spending is “rising rapidly” and that discretionary is rising somewhat less rapidly. We’re broke. We should be decreasing the size and scope of government across the board. Not protecting our discretionary sacred cows.

Meanwhile, an article on the left-leaning Daily Kos applauds Senator Landrieu for “calling out Fox News’ propaganda.”

  Yes, apparently government doesn’t have a spending problem, it’s not obvious, we just owe someone 16 trillion that we can’t pay back. The government borrows 64 cents for every dollar they spend. I want to force these politicians to spend their own money the same way they spend ours. Lets see how long they last. It’s government officials like this pig that doesn’t think about what they are doing, because it’s not their own money. I really hate this country. It is no longer worth living here. This may still be the greatest country on earth, but it’s dying at the speed of light.

  I didn’t vote for any of the times she has run…and why does any (d) always immediately upon hearing of spending cuts start talking about cuts to SS & Medicare…Didn’t the greatest generation pay into that Ponzi Scheme their whole lives? I think where we need to cut spending is on the folks that just take and do NOT ever put anything into the system, i.e. politicians and other blood suckers…and they can call me a dam *******, I don’t care…the (d) way is always attack the other folks, while they are pointing their fingers at everyone else in the room, someone should put a mirror right in front of her…

  The The revenues/income, debt & deficit are what they are. Spinning the #s won’t matter in the long run, not for a single houslehold or for a large aggregate of households.
  
  Sooner or later people come looking for their money be they businesses, relatives or other nations.
  
  Other nations can be quite harsh when they collect their money. They have been known to send their militaries to take over countries.

  That’s because they are going after the 1st Amendment now. I think they have figured out that they can’t take out the 2nd Amendment until they destroy the 1st. Every American should be questioning a media that agrees with everything an/ANY administration does and they should listen even more closely to a media outlet that is constantly criticized by an administration.

As far as the Fox programming, I too sometimes get annoyed with the libs on the shows but I like hearing what they say because we need to hear them. Lets see. Lets do some basic math. Last year we brought in roughly 4 Trillion dollars in “revenues.” Last year we believe (because there was no budget passed we cant be exactly sure) we spent around 5.7 trillion dollars. Apparently I missed something in school and now 5.7 is SMALLER than 4. Hey Ms Landoh how about ya pull out a calculator and try to figure out if 4 is bigger than 5.7 or 5.7 is bigger than 4. Here is a hint the correct answer will not wind up with one of these signs on it -

To be expected. Keep in mind that their Hive Leader was just lashing out against Fox recently, so the orders have officially come down to start the public demonization. There’s things wrong with Fox, but it’s not the base organization that Left proclaims. Now that Obama has given the go-ahead to declare war on them, expect more and more of these kinds of “stories” from here on out.

If it is not out of control then why is more debt made to pay bills, just simply does not make sense at all. Fox got it right, this senator is just another deceiving political aristrocat who thinks she can do whatever she likes. There is no excuse for justifying poor management.
