Female Star on ABC’s ‘Bachelor’ Stuns Many By Refusing to Kiss Date So as Not to Offend Muslim Family

Selma Alameri Refuses to Kiss Sean Lowe on ABCs the Bachelor Because of Her Muslim Family

It was a stunning moment, especially for a television program that prides itself on touting romantic interactions between cast members. On ABC’s “The Bachelor” last night, Selma Alameri, one of the show’s many female dating contestants, refused to kiss her co-star, Sean Lowe.

Typically, bachelors can be seen getting overtly affectionate with their cast-mates, but this was the exact opposite of what Alameri was willing to allow.

“I can’t kiss you,” she told him, citing her mother’s strict “culture” as her main reason for the refusal.

“So, my mom — she’s very strict in her culture,” she told Lowe. “We’re not even allowed to date, basically — not that we’re not allowed to date. Obviously we’re allowed to date…In our culture we sort of keep it secret from everyone.”

The reality show contestant said that, while she wanted to kiss her co-star, she generally keeps her relationships “hush, hush.” Alameri also said that putting any romance on display would be “a big deal” for her mother. For those who didn’t know her background, the situation likely seemed odd. However, “Bachelor” host Chris Harrison recently explained what was at the root of Alameri’s refusal to lock lips with Lowe during an interview with Entertainment Weekly (emphasis added):

Selma is jetted off to Joshua Tree National Park for some rock climbing, and then dines under the stars at what ABC describes as a “hipster-chic trailer park.” But there’s more to this date: “Selma is Iraqi. She was born Muslim. I don’t believe she is now, but her family is, and they’re very strict and very conservative,” Harrison says. “While she doesn’t necessarily have the same beliefs as her family, she definitely respects her family and their wishes. Just being on the show, as you’ll see, is a huge deal for her. To date out loud is not custom, obviously. When you cross the physicality of the show — emotions and kissing and where it goes — they have to deal with that. She has to explain to Sean what’s going on. And Sean, it’s very interesting because he’s a very Christian man and wears his emotions and religion on his sleeve. It’s why I love this show: It’s such a great social study, these two religions coming together and having to deal with this situation. People always say, ‘I wish you guys would do more real-life stuff.’ This is very real life.”

Despite her coy nature on the television show, critics have pointed to what they see as inconsistencies in Alameri’s reasoning. Examiner’s Mandy Robinson claims that, while Alameri wouldn’t kiss Lowe for fear of offending her family, she has been willing, in the past, to “model half naked.”

“Selma works as a model and there is a video out there of her half naked doing her job,” Robinson wrote, calling the contestant’s willingness to disrobe “a bit shocking” considering her refusal to give a kiss.

Update: The controversial “half-naked” modeling video mentioned in Robinson’s article has now been removed by the YouTube user who initially posted it. Prior to being taken down, we reviewed the clip and it did, indeed, reveal quite a bit of skin.

  GETYOURCOUNTRYBACK….she’s on the show to promote her “career” (whatever that is in her eyes). She’s not there to date anyone or find a husband or whatever other idiocy the show wants to offer. She’s there to be seen and (in her eyes) hopefully scouted for a bigger gig than what she’s got now. She’s seen the show, she knows there’s a lot of making out on camera and the show encourages intimate encounters and “drama” which the editors tweak for whatever angle they want to portray to the somnambulistic audience that watches this tripe. She didn’t go into this with no idea of what is aired on this and other shows like it. I’ll bet every cent to my name that she couldn’t give a d@mn whether this clownshoes that all these women are pretending to fall in love with, wants her or not. She’s not there for a date or a husband. She’s there to promote herself…notice “Selma has a modelling career”?

Okay, so if she won’t do what the point of the whole show is to do (hook-up with a member of the opposite sex), then WHY was she cast on the show?? Is this more P.C. non-sense?? Giving Muslims a “fair shake”??

I respect the she values family enough to be firm, but seriously, muslim culture would NOT like her being on this show to begin with…. So since she has already committed a capitol offense in the muslim world (and probably earned herself and her family a nice little fatwa for it) where is the harm in kissing a guy..???

I mean, if this show was shot in a muslim country, he would have been raping her half-way through the date anyway, and then blacking her eye as a farewell gift…

  I do not know why it is that in this country we are expected to respect some our house back door satanic religion like Islam. Who cares what Muslim families think? The last time I looked, the name in this country was United States of America, not the US of Islam. The sooner that the population of this country gets their heads removed from their rectums and realizes that diversity is nothing more than politically correct BS the sooner we will get back on the right track and be able to hold our into high in the rest of the world because we will not be out there following suit with every other crappy little country who wants to give these people credence.

  I’ve never watched enough of this show to really know what goes on because it seems ultra fake. However, if he is such a good Christian, why is HE on it???? Real Christians would not be doing what is going on – or advertised to be going on – on this show anyway.

  She’s trying to win by making the choice to kick her off the show seem like it has a “racial” motivation.
  
  If she gets kicked off, the guy will be seen as a complete jerk for doing so, maybe even prompting other women to leave in protest. It was a very smart move on her part, playing on the stupidity of the teenage girls that watch this show.

I don’t get it… you can’t kiss because it would offend your mother… but you also can’t date, because that would offend your mother? And yet… you’re on national television, on a show ABOUT dating. So much for keeping it “hush-hush.” I think your mother is going to find out, kissing or not.

While I can respect her modest stance, I’m not sure if lying to your family is moral either.

  Aye, it makes no sense. I strongly suspect it’s a “PR” play for Islam. I mean the girl does not dress immodestly at all (bless her heart, as I don’t mind at all), she clearly doesn’t follow any of the other tenants of Islam and for all intents and purposes appears to be a ‘worldly modern woman’, so the “my mom’s culture” falls flat. I mean ok, if it’s her mom’s culture, she’s clearly differentiating between her mom and herself culture wise, which begs the question of what her point was to begin with.
  
  She’s either Muslim, or she isn’t. If her mother isn’t offended by her worldly uncovered hotness, I doubt she’d be offended any more so than by a kiss.

Could it be their holy book states muslims are not to associate with non-muslims. I hope he’s ready to convert to being a muslim and adhering to sharia law. He’d be such a stud in a foot long beard, garb on head, and praying 5 times day. Some how I doubt he will.

  Not to cut your mocking short, but I was raised in a very similar way by my Christian family. Treat women with respect, don’t get into frivolous relationships, no sex until marriage, etc. My sisters never dated in high school, and as far as I know never kissed a man until they were in their late teens.
  
  You find a similar line of cultural values in strict Evangelical/Quiverfull/home-schooling circles these days. Dating is discouraged; girls are taught about “Purity Culture,” and that even feeling attracted to someone else is cheating on your future spouse and giving away pieces of your heart. Nevermind not kissing; even -thinking- about the opposite sex in a romantic fashion is shunned.
  
  There’s a spectrum of respect; this woman is apparently abiding by her mothers’ wishes, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. At the far end you get the crazies, and this woman doesn’t seem to be there at least.
