Gossip Site Suggests Britney Spears’ ‘Revealing Outfit’ Too Sexy for Church — Agree? Plus, What Do You Think About Worship Attire in General?

Pop star Britney Spears (left) (Photo Credit: Omg! Yahoo!)
It’s not uncommon for the faithful to debate key elements of the church-going experience. TheBlaze already explored the never-ending battle over the style of music in American churches (while some people like old-school hymns, others prefer contemporary worship music), but what about attire?
Clothing, like music, can be a controversial subject, as some congregations prefer suits and ties for pastors and parishioners, alike, while others would rather see more comfortable outfits — jeans, t-shirts and even sweatshirts. The argument that those in the former category pose is that people should look their best to honor the God they are worshipping. Those in the latter group contend that clothing is merely an outer fixture — one that has little to nothing to do with praise and salvation.
Of course, the debate is more detailed — and that’s especially true for women. For example, it’s more than just formal versus informal: women are also constantly the center of debates about skirt length and shirt tightness when in the pews.
And it seems the controversy extends beyond the church community. On Tuesday, Yahoo’s celebrity gossip site omg! published a piece detailing Britney Spears’ outfit choice for a Sunday church visit. Under a headline that reads, “Britney Spears Wore–What?!–to Church?,” omg! wonders if the popular pop singer, 31, and her attire were too racy for a church service at Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village, Calif. (You can see her clothing in the above image.)
The outlet describes her “revealing outfit” as consisting of “a super-short skirt and sky-high heels.” Rather than being suited for church, the ensamble, according to omg!, is more tailored to “a night on the town.” Watch the video report describing the outfit, below:
While you may care little about Spears, the real issue here is church attire. Based on what you saw in the clip, was the pop singer’s outfit appropriate for church — or something that women simply shouldn’t be wearing inside of a house of worship? Or, was it fine and nothing out of the ordinary? Also, what are your overall views about the types of clothes that should be worn in church? Do you support formal or informal wear?

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 11:28amIn Luke 8, Jesus didn’t care that the mad man of the country of the Gadarenes was naked – He delivered and healed him anyway. And in Matthew 23, Jesus, referring to the garments of the Scribes and Pharisees, called them hypocrites, fools and the blind, yet He never spoke a harsh word to tax collectors or prostitutes. It’s HIS Church. Do you think He cares? What business is it of ours? We can’t change them — He can. We can only chase them away with our gossiping and judging.

And his ministry was only for Jews not gentiles, gentiles were brought in after the resurrection . Read Pauls teachings , and you might understand why covering the body is a good thing .

If we unknowingly cause another to stumble, it is the responsibility of another brother to let us know ous actions are questionable. Where in the bible does it say anything that says we cannot make judgement on what others do? The only thing the bible warns against, is making the judgement of wether another is to advance to heaven. Bottom line is, she should quietly be informed that her attire may cause a man to have to struggle with keeping his eyes were they belong.

Did BS come before the Father of Heaven and Earth and the King of Kings showing them the highest respect with her apparel? Would she appear before the rulers of this world taking better care of what she wore? There are many scriptures which speak to the appropriate dress and character for both women and men.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 4:26pm@TGAYLE: with respect, I would like to point out a couple of things:
1. In Luke 8:27, it says the man had been naked a while and was possessed by demons. The implication is that at one point he did wear clothes. Later in 8:35, it speaks of the man being clothed and in his right mind. Would it not be logical to conclude that Jesus did not address the matter of clothes because the man himself knew the need for them?
2. In Matthew 23, the Pharisees are called hypocrites for enlarging their garments as a way to promote self and be prideful. Certainly there is a lesson in there not to wear clothes in an effort to show off (which also agrees with 1 Timothy 2:9). Can we not look here and conclude that Jesus was in fact warning to beware of how you dress in general when it lifts up self above others? Is not a skimpy outfit a way of doing just that? Does not 1 Corinthians 4:6 warn about lifting up self above others?

Beyond this, the idea in scripture is that if you are born again, you are a new creature; not a “Sunday go ta meet’n” creature. How you dress everyday may be a reflection on who you really are. But if wearing a suit and tie is the sign of a true believer, then I guess organised crime leaders, politicians, CEOs, used car salesmen… are showing themselves to be “good Christians”.
“Clothes make the man” is a catchy phrase but not very deep. When we stand before God, He is not going to remind us of how we dressed; He will wellcome those who yeilded to HIs calling according to the work of Jesus Christ; The Word of God.
Paul said, “if eating meat, causes my brother to stumble, I won’t eat meat.” He said this in reference to how we are to express Christian love. How much more then, should a woman, who profeces to know Christ, be carefull about causing a brother to stumble by wearing revealing clothing?
And if she is ignorant as to how her choice of clothing may affect a man, let a more mature believing woman set her straight in love.

There is much to be said for avoiding giving others undue distraction in Church and practicing modesty. It isn’t that much of a sacrifice to do so as a mark of respect for God and others for the relatively short time one is in church.

If a person really accepts Jesus Christ as their Savior, then it isn’t about “them” anymore…it is about Jesus and one’s life should reflect the change. If that’s a concern, then maybe she shouldn’t be there because she’s famous and eye’s will stray to get a good look at the star. In any event she’s going to be a distraction. What’s the purpose of going to church, being distracted or focusing on the primary reason for being there which is to worship. This is not to say that all distractions should be ignored. Common sense should prevail. If someone shows up screaming and yelling to disturb, they probably should be ejected. Obvious behavior is good indicator of a person’s motives.

My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.
For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?
If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

When you are quoting scripture please provide the context. The passage you quoted is referring to how certain churches might be inclined to lavish praises on the rich person while scoffing at the poor person. The cloths in this text are metaphor and not the relevant context. Gold rings are used metaphorically for materialism of a rich person and the rags being what is typically identified with poor people. This passage has nothing to do with style of cloths. There are many passages that do deal with humble dress for women but this is not one of them.

First of all, space limits through contextual comment.
I had rather the Bible speak than me.
In context James is speaking …to the 12 tribes scattered abroad…of attitude toward distraction from worshiping God. The purpose of attending Church is to worship God.
James tells them to not be distracted from worship by wealth or poverty or anything else that can be recalled from Jewish synagogue days. God does not recognize either from a worshiper. God reserves His mercy and compassion to himself. I speak of wealth and poverty. Romans 9:15 quoted from from Exodus 33:19.
By the same advice he is telling those attending don’t be a distraction to those worshiping.
The Blaze article is about B. Spears being a distraction by her reveling clothing. It is not about the clothing, it is about the distraction.
Secondly i agree with you that there are other places that discuss modesty not only of dress but of lifestyle as well. This particular advice by James is given …to the 12 tribes scattered abroad… that have accepted Christ as their savior and are still working out their tumultuous lives while at the same time be established as churches and attending a worship service together. Some of these same difficulties yet exist in churches today. If they are not then why is there a discussion about B. Spears and how she looks attending church.
Thank-you for taking the time for comment – I do appreciate it.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 11:20amFor unsaved people to be put under a dress code is a turn off. Her going to a worldly church in the first place, she will probably never hear the truth so that transformation cannot take place anyhow. If an unsaved woman dressed like a harlot walks into an assembly of true believers that are gathered together in the might and power of the Lord Jeshua, the conviction of God would come upon their heart. They can be saved and just the transformation transforms what they wear without having to be told. “If any man be in Christ, old things pass away and all things become new”.
The problem with Brittan Spears attention organized religion, well, it is the harlot system in the first place and her harlot attire matches the spirituality of both of them.

Did the Early Church (after his resurrection) have a dress code?
Is there anything in the Word that Demands, or Requires a specific type of attire to obtain salvation, to ‘keep’ one’s salvation, or to be able to worship God in the presence of others? Is there a pre-requisite for being able to hear the Word or to learn?
Does one need to put on ‘perfection’ on the outside even tho the inside doesn’t match? – doesn’t this promote hypocrisy?
Show me the Scripture. plain and simple.

Scripture does note to dress modestly and there are notes of what priest should wear specifically in the temple in certain occasions.
Jesus preached to all, approached those in poverty as well the hierarchy. I believe that it is best to show respect in a house of worship but one should never dissuade another from attending because of their dress. Any time a person is pursuing the Gods word, the last thing you want to do is take them away from that direction, they should always feel welcome when doing so. More over, it should be in the heart of a congregation to help those that want to do so.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 11:12amI dress to express my respect for my congregants. When I assist at the Lord’s Table I wear a tie.
I always wear a jacket or sweater that covers my IWB pistol. When we celebrated The Baptism of Our Lord recently, I reaffirmed my faith in Baptism while armed.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 12:01pmYour show of respect for our Lord is appreciated. We tried to teach our children that the way we present ourselves is important every day in every way, so, why would it not be important to present only our best to our Lord? He does not judge, he accepted the widow’s alms and welcomed prostitutes and criminals, but even they did their best to present themselves to Him at their best, even if it wasn’t at the highth of fashion and designed by elitists for only the elite. How much your attire cost has nothing to do with how you present yourself. That you are wearing your best, are well groomed and coming with an attitude of worship and thankfulness is the important thing. Again, thank you for showing such respect in this day and age of such judgemental fools.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 11:10amWay too short!
It’s tough enough trying to keep your eyes and mind from wandering when outside of church, I shouldn’t have to struggle with it IN church. I’m Christian and I admit that my weakest point is that I get angered too easily and that’s something I struggle to work on every day. Watching what is happening to our country makes it much tougher.
But, I see young girls in my church dress the same way as Brittany in this photo and I sometimes wander if I am in church or at the mall. It just seems to me that elders and pastors are more concerned these days with attendance numbers than they are about guidelines for moral ethics within the church.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 11:29amI agree with most everything you said, but I don’t blame the elders and pastors. It’s a parent’s responsibility to teach their children how to dress and act in public. Most of the problems this country faces can be traced back to poor or non existent parenting.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 11:32amCouldn’t agree more. However I don’t understand why your so angry with the country’s ways? If your born again you were bought with a price and therefore a citizen of the New Jerusalem! Your bible tells you that there will be a one world system both politcal n religious and nothing will change GOD’S plan. As far as America goes the majority of citizens in this country has been turned over to a reprobate mind! GOD SPEED!

Look, this girl is very troubled. She doesn’t need church, she needs God. Going to church, does not make her religious anymore than going to McDonalds makes you a hamburger. Her behavior is disgusting, and would not be allowed in my church. When you are about to stand before the KING of kings, please be appropriately attired.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 11:05amMeh, come as you are…but the Pastor could have a one on one talk with the young lady about modesty and such. In a polite respectful way without judging…of course. You don’t want to turn them away cause they are seekers…and such a person coming to know God would be very powerful for others…got it?

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 5:10pmSometimes it takes a person a while to realize which things need to change in their lives, and which don’t. You give a person time to develop in their relationship with their Creator, and hope they’re inspired to tone it down a little. But otherwise, she’s there, isn’t she? Be glad for her.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 11:02amAccording to the results of these polls, it’s apparent that there is no fear or respect for God in this country.
If the Queen of England invited you to dinner at Buckingham palace, would you wear jeans and a T-Shirt? Probably not. So if it’s not good enough for a foreign monarch, why should it be good enough for the Creator of the Universe and the One who died to save you? (Unless it’s all you can afford. But since most of welfare recipients have flat-screens and smart phones, I think they could go to thrift store and by some cheap church clothes).

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 12:35pmActually Ryd, they return their annual stiped granted to them by Parliament, with interest, every year without fail. They actually bring in a lot more money than they are provided, that goes directly to Britain (well, to the U.K. in any case). I used to be sour on the royals until I investigated their costs and benefits objectively. Far from being on welfare, they are excellent PR spokesmen and great national “investments”.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 11:01amOh my. That girl can wear any ol’ thing she wants, I’ve always thought that she was beautiful, and that she got a lot of heat and derision because she was one of “us” from flyover country. They still mock her and use her, and I hope some day she snaps out of the media coma and goes back to her Louisiana roots.
Quite a fetching beauty no matter what, and woman shaped even (unlike a lot of “women” who are shaped like 15 year old boys).

This is what you must know:
When you use quotes around the word girls, it serves to advise the reader that you mean something other than what the word actually means. But here’s the rub, they really are girls, if we are to believe the point you are so ham-handedly trying to make. And so the quotes actually do more to reveal what may be your true predilection, as so adroitly identified by the aforementioned oogling.
In any case, three things are abundantly clear:
1 – You’re suffering from severe gender confusion (and the attendant guilt).
2 – Writing is not your friend.
3 – No-reading is not your friend either.
It is so.
